    Great review! I'm waiting for my 51a to arrive in the mail so watching some reviews to learn more about them. Yours is particularly interesting because I use my fountain pens for drawing too.. for years I only used Rapidographs or Marsmatic pens for drawing, really enjoying sketching with fountain pens now.

      Thanks! The 51a was a huge surprise for me. Best pen value under $10, as far as I’m concerned.
      My father is an architect, and I inherited his rapidograph when he went digital about 20 years ago. I never really got into them, as I wasn’t really comfortable with holding them vertically (as it seems they require). I’ll probably try and clean them up and do a video about them in the future. Thanks for checking me out!

    Yes, I own a peachwood example, although, I have yet to ink it up and enjoy it for a wee sketch or two or three..... Lovely pens many thanks for sharing.

    Hi, Steven. Thanks for the drawing demos with fountain pens! Jinhao 51a is a great pen. How do you do your sketches? Is there a pencil underdrawing that you've done? All good, just curious.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David McGuigan yes, I usually do an underdrawing plus I rough out my ideas and do various thumbnails and compositions. This is usually the most time consuming part of making these videos, because I create a lot of stuff that never makes it into the video.
      Most artists I know use underdrawing, though there are some famous ones (who I don’t know personally) like Kim Jung Gi and Peter Han, who don’t. Maybe someday I’ll have skills like that, but I’ll bet I will always do underdrawing.
      My process involves a lot of prep work, like pencil sketches/value studies/lots of thumbnails. These are invaluable for keeping clients in the loop when I’m doing something I get paid for, but when I’m making something for myself, I find that I’m my own toughest client.
      If people are interested, I might try to include my whole process in a video in the future. Thanks for asking!

    As an artist I appreciate your style of reviews. I'm tempted to get this pen but I was wondering if you'd consider it more of an extra fine or fine? Also, I'm curious as to whether or not the hooded nib gives any advantages? Have you experiencd it preventing the nib from drying out more than the traditional nibs?

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! As for the nib, I would consider it to be somewhat in between a western ef and a Japanese ef. Not as fine as a platinum Preppy or Pilot Kakuno in ef, but not as wide as a Lamy Safari in ef.
      The interesting thing about this pen is that it does pretty consistent reverse writing, and THAT line is pretty much a Japanese ef, though it is a bit dry.
      This is the only hooded nib I currently own, but I do think it kind of keeps the lines really consistent regardless of pressure. It’s much easier to fill and blot off after filling as well. I can’t say much about the nib drying out, as it’s never happened. But I’ve never had a non-hooded nib dry out either. Not before I used up all the ink, that is :)

    I am still pretty new to fountain pens. Got into it first because of art but then I realized I loved writing with one for journaling, etc. But I love my 0.3 gel pens and am searching for a true extra fine fountain pen. Do you prefer this to the Kakuno EF you have reviewed? Or is there another EF you have tried that you feel is a true EF. (In a beginner price range of say, under $50.)

      I’d say the Kakuno is really fine. The jinhao 51a is about the line weight of a Pilot Metropolitain (which is a Pilot fine, compared to this particular Kakuno, which is an extra fine). Still not bad for a fine line, but the Kakuno ef is finer. You have to read the description of the item carefully though, because the Kakuno also comes in fine, which is the same as the Metropolitan.
      Other low cost options are the ones from Platinum. The preppy comes in fine and extra fine. I like the platinum pens because they are a bit dryer than the pilots, so they work consistently, even on cheaper paper. Some people don’t like the aesthetics, but if you don’t mind it (I don’t) you can get a great pen for $5-7 USD. There are also the Prefounte (cleaner look, but still plastic) and the Plasir, which is aluminum. The Plasir and prefounte both come in only fine, but their nibs are totally interchangeable, so you could get a Plasir and a preppy and swap the nibs to get an Plasir in ef, without spending even $25.
      The one thing I would also recommend would be a converter, if you want to add your own bottled ink. Unfortunately, those are sold separately. You could get the whole setup of preppy (ef) and converter for less than $15.
      There are some costs up from with even these bargain pens, but the good news is that they are super sturdy. I have had my preppy for 5+ years and it still works (extra) fine!

    I just ordered 5 units ... I hope it does not happen to me as with the wirsung 3008, of 5 pens in the pack only one worked well ...

      Oh really? I hadn’t had any problems with this pen, so I hope its a good result for you. I also have never had any problems with my Wing Sung 3008... but I think it’s a bit of a grab bag with those cheaper pens... lack of quality control. When they’re good, they’re great! But there are times when that’s not the case.

    I was planning to buy this ...is the material actually wood or just a finish over a metal barrel
    Also is the wood finish durable ?

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s wood all the way through. There is a small metal tube that contains the threads that connect the section to the barrel, but it doesn’t cover the length of the pen.
      I’d say it’s pretty good for the price, but don’t expect to be shocked. For a $10 pen, the quality is not going to be on par with, say, a Conklin All-American or something at a similar price point. I still love and use this pen often though!

    Sir,
    can I write IKSHU 51 A Tiger Wood fountain pen with reverse nib? PLEASE REPLY

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, I’m having some trouble understanding your question. Is it about reverse writing with the nib? Because if so, it is nice and smooth. A finer line, but almost feels like forward writing!
