Nice to see Dylan mention WATA and how they have clearly been manipulating the retro game market.
Or else it's just good ol' fashioned money laundering.
With the Ace Attorney song in the background to boot 😄
All americans do ...😂
@@jasonblalock4429how do they launder money through graded games?
@@BlusViews To summarize how that worked: Heritage Auctions had relations with top brass at WATA games and would sell off the videogame catalogue of Heritage Auctions at vastly inflated prices.
Heritage Auctions has a history of manipulating markets of various collection hobbies.
the pac attack transition was masterful.
God, Dylan's rant about retro collecting is such a mood. I swear, a lot of these resellers are colluding or something behind the scenes...
You're not wrong. Heritage Auctions has manipulated markets of many collection hobbies.
I remember RLM busted open an obvious racket re: grading vhs tapes
I doubt there's outright "secret meetings" of collusion, but more like the resellers are seeing how much some people have been ripped off and they all collectively went "damn, it's that easy to make millions with these?"
Just look at the history of Wata and who started it… crazy rabbit hole.
They are. Grading is a scam
Love seeing Dylan also call out WATA on their bullshit. Love you
Guys.
For the record, I personally enjoy Editor Dylan's takes and commentary. I loved that bit of investigative journalism at the end.
Lunch break, pay day and “Now in the 90’s”. The perfect trifecta!
The perfect trifecta indeed
And a last action hero reference! Damn
@@domomorales2655 yeah
Now I need just to get a job and something to eat!
Give me ur pay chex
Editor Dylan is doing the Lord’s work and I’m here for it! 😅🎉🎉😂
That segue to the Pack-attack way ingenious and hilarious! I'm genuinely impressed.
The sealed games market could easily have a rather big problem in a few years when some of those unused game carts have their batteries die and erode and start leaking on the boards and making the cart inside that box completely destroyed and worthless.
Dylan is 100% on point with the market manipulation of retro video games prices. I stop collecting because of that. I simply can't in my eyes pay those stupid prices. Yes F**K Resellers!!! Sadly if you mention that in those horrible facebook group like Game Boy Collectors, people get mad at you and those mental case admins bans you...
That happened shortly after I was starting to collect too. Very glad he mentioned that load of shit.
@@LegacyOfKain339that’s a load of crap because ALL games are affected as the loose ones get jacked-up alongside them
@@LegacyOfKain339why are you trying so hard to defend it?
Just leave it be. No one is gonna listen to you.
Because they have to protect their racket.
I remember getting Super Empire Strikes Back for Christmas in 1993! Beating that game on Jedi difficulty is still one of my proudest gaming achievements
You didnt mention the best upgrade from Super Star Wars, a password system so you dont have to play the entire game in one sitting.
The lack of a password feature and the fact that you can't actually "run & gun" makes the first game hard to go back to. Still love it though, it's just THAT good.
@@HylianFox3yes. The first game is the only one I had a physical copy for and it’s the only one I’ve beaten. I have super empire in the box and just as I did back in the day (early 2010s lol tho if I grew up with Star Wars I’m old enough to have owned these as a kid) I want up giving up around the time I get off of Hoth. They both are super fun. I think I did use U Can Beat Video Games walk thru for part of the second one
Stimpy's Invention on the Genesis is surprisingly good! It's short and doesn't break new ground, but it plays well and it's pretty humorous!
The pac-attack segway got me to genuinely laugh out loud. Holy crap Dylan, you're a fantastic writer.
Happy Friday everyone!
The cartoon for _Crash Dummies_ was a single 22 minute pilot episode. It never got picked up to become a series, though the episode did air on Fox and was included on a VHS tape that came with one of the toys, Ted. Interestingly, it was an all CGI cartoon, one of the first, and if it had gone to series it probably would have predated _Reboot_ as the first all CGI cartoon series.
Another great episode of editor Dylan with his master repertoire of retro rants
Damn, Dylan gets more based with every episode.
Ren and Stimpy was a trip. My folks allowed me to watch it on Nickelodeon as a child.
My dad never let me watch it lol ._. But I did have a cassette tape with a bunch of Nickeloden songs and 'Happy Happy joy joy' was on there. It was his favorite lol.
@@Phantomsangel Classic song.
Man, the Super Star Wars series still blows my mind with how good it looks. They really polished the hell out of those games to make them stand out.
Awesome episode. I remember playing Ren & Stimpy back then and it makes sense reviews were bad. I'm also glad to see Editor Dylan point out the corruption of WATA games
>the corruption of WATA games
Is it corruption if the influence was there to start with?
If corporations have pyramidal structures, what's a pyramid scheme?
Super Empire Strikes Back is the game I played the most out of that series. It is also the hardest; there may or may not be a correlation there.
Dylan, I was all prepared to talk up that Pac Attack transition. But then the Last Action Hero section came up, which was just awesome. Keep up the good work man.
They weren't wrong. The entire SSW trilogy was awesome...just unforgivingly hard. Glad they gave us cheats though.only way I was able to see most of the game
I almost finished Super Return of the Jedi but I couldn't get thought the final tunnel escape.
There was cheats!?
@@gamble777888 oh hell yeah. they were a pain to do though. they were long title screen presses. And you knew they worked if you heard the jawa scream I sure as hell didn't get to see later stages based off skill, lol.
@@Invidente7that part literally goes on for over 7+ mins
I loved the infinite thermal detonator code, just mashing the item button while everything dies around you. I do think I beat this and Super Return of the Jedi legitimately though (never owned the first Super Star Wars).
Big round of applause to David!
Sometimes, a bunch of random game cartridges is the perfect gift. When I was... probably in my early teens, my friend gave me a grocery bag of NES games (and maybe a couple of SNES games, too?) for my birthday, and I loved it! A few of them became some of my nostalgic favorites, like Clash at Demon Head, and I THINK Rygar and/or Faxanadu? But I might have gotten those somewhere else.
This was a VERY educational and hilarious lesson in Dylanomics!
The Super Star Wars games were a HUGE deal for me back in the early 90's. I got each game as they released and played them pretty obsessively. ESB is easily the most difficult of them, even to this day. It has the most and longest levels, toughest boss fights and generally the most off-screen spam damage. That said, it might also feel like the most robust game of the series, with the improvements to the controls, the largest variety in stages and all the extra Force powers and abilities. Absolutely an excellent game, just a very challenging one.
Empire strikes back is my favourite Star Wars so I’m glad to see it get a game adaption. Such a classic but so hard
That was a great episode! The Phoenix Wright music during the research was on point, too!
Hey Jared! It was awesome seeing you at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo! I just wish we knew what Editor Dylan looked like so we could meet him, too; my son is a huge fan!
Heh, don't think I didn't see you got your copy of Gauntlet Legends, Dylan! Hyped you were actually able to get it, that game is an absolute blast and the Dreamcast port always looked so damn good. And it was always so fun getting three friends together to tackle that four player mode. Good times that unfortunately make me feel old, haha!
Gear Works is actually a pretty fun game, if frustratingly hard at points. It's not my favorite puzzle game by any means, but there's a lot of critical thinking to getting the gear chain to work. You can't always lean on the preplaced gears to help you solve things- a lot of the time, they'll end up locking your whole chain.
Fantastic episode as usual guys. Now I want to rewatch Last Action Hero.
But how do you say it, Las Action Hero or Last Action Hero ?
I love watching this series.
That wasn't just a rant by Dylan... that was a limit break.
Dylan said: "Challenge accepted" And busted out a synopsis of the Retro Market inflation!
Give this man a drink.
Super Empire Strikes Back was my Christmas present that year. Great memories of playing it Christmas morning.
God I love the Phoenix Wright soundtrack. Thanks, Dylan.
Dylan’s description of a pool game without using the word pool made me laugh!
I see Dylan got his Gauntlet Legends! Great game. Tons of fun.
Kinda feeling the same way Dylan feels about PGA European Tour on N64, wouldn't expect a golf game to be just over $100 loose
This series is pure gold and it keeps getting better
I used to rent the SNES versions of Pac-Attack and Tetris 2 a lot. Fun fact, Pac-Attack is a reskin of an arcade game Namco made called Cosmo Gang the Puzzle with catching aliens instead of eating ghosts. The Super Famicom version still uses Cosmo Gang, but the American and European versions use Pac-Man.
Dylan going off the rails at Wata and resellers, Oh Hell Yeah.
Dylan made out like a bandit at the con!!! Great video as always guys
@Editor Dylan: I love the deep dives you go in around the price gouging of bad & common games that have no reason to be the price they are.
Please keep this up as we need more people to know about this to hopefully restore some sanity back into this market.
Damn, that transition from that pool game to Pac Attack was smooth as hell.
Great episode as always, absolutely agree with Dylan, Last Action Hero is a great movie and WATA should be called out
An amazing soundtrack
Here for the B.D.E. (Big Dylan Energy) and I am NOT disappointed! That rant was GOLDEN!!!!
Most iconic Ahnold line to me will always be "Who is your daddy and what does he do?"
Back in the early days of internet there was soundboard and the Arnold one was the best. Made so many prank calls as Arnold. Remember pissing off the pizza place with that very question.
1 minute crew assemble!!
🎼 "It's log, it's log; it's big, it's heavy, it's wood. It's log, it's log; it's better than bad, it's good"
nice to see Dylan getting what he wanted: that sweet N64!
Not sure if these comments'll be read, but in case they do - I both love and appreciate that Super Star Wars was brought up and vaguely explained with the Super Empire Strikes Back segment since it wasn't covered last year (I think) before Now in the 90's started as a show, and I hope next year this script trend continues with even games already covered in this or last year's episodes since the little bit of extra context feels amazingly formatted into the show without feeling too repetitive. Could also be handy for newcomers to the channel whom haven't watched the full backlog or been here since the beginning
Thank you, Editor Dylan, for calling out Wata artificially inflating retro game prices and ruining it for all of us!
I never expected an expose on those WATA jerks in a Now in the 90s video. But thank you. What they have done is infuriating.
You said it editor Dylan!
Lo-og Lo-og, It's big it's heavy it's wood.
Lo-og lo-og it's better than bad it's good.
Yes, Stick make clacky ball go in table holes Dylan. XD
Love all your bits.
Super empire strikes back actually came out in june of 93. But as usual another great episode, one of the few I watch every week
This has become a weekly tradition for me; every Friday night I get home from work, cook myself a chicken burger, and sit in my favourite chair to watch Now in the 90s on my TV. Life is good.
A correction--Crash Dummies did NOT have a cartoon *series*--it just had the one episode. It was a TV special.
I wouldn't have minded Jerd explaining Star Wars just to extend runtime 😅 Also, keep up the good work, Dylan. So funny, yet so real 👍🏼
Tetris 2 has an incredible puzzle mode where you have to clear the board with a small number of pieces. Each puzzle has one specific intended solution... some of the later ones are really wild! It was my first experience of that kind of puzzle game and I have been hooked ever since.
That section about Wata and the re-sellers was worth it man, perfectly said! Don't forget Heritage Auctions
Last action hero has aged beautifully. I didn’t get it as a kid but it’s hilarious now
15:36 you are most welcome Jared; thanks for making the videos for every week as well!
Man, Super Empire Strikes Back was probably the most frustrating game that I played in the early 90's. I had to just put my controller down so many times and walk away before I started smashing things. I never beat it.
I sold some games at a garage sale recently, some reseller was trying to rob me blind but I stuck it to him. He REALLY wanted those games. Sucker.
I had the Crash Test Dummies Toys, including the car. They were awesome.
Shoutouts to the cousins! Haha! My cousin surprised me last Christmas with his present, which was every game he still had for the N64 that we used to play as kids. Pretty sure he was cleaning out his house and figured I would get more use out of them since he's been super busy lately... and if anything he's getting more use from the Switch and it's online library. Thanks Cousin!❤
I don't know which was better, Dylan's segue into Pac-Attack and the rant about the price inflation in retro games. Never know what you're gonna get from him in these, keep up the good work.
"HE'S HAVING A pac attack" golden line
I just watched Last Action Hero for the first time earlier this year and I can confirm it was really fun!
Ren & Stimpy was shown on TV in the evening in my country, and not dubbed, so I always assumed if was a show for more mature audiences. I still can't picture it as a cartoon for kids, lol.
the villain toys from crash dummies were these amazingly detailed junkbots. They are insanely hard to find complete as they also came apart.
OH FUCK! Tetris 2! I have been trying to remember what game this was for years!
This was my dad's favorite video game. I always thought it was a Tetris clone and not actually Tetris.
Returning for Rapid-Fire with editor Dylan every weel. Also an AiC fan? Cool, dude!
Last Action Hero is indeed a good movie. Also, yes, there is some shenanigans around the price of retro games. Karl Jobst did some great videos on it. Long story short: Those prices for Last Action Hero Could very well be a group of "game collectors" ('investors") all buying and selling the game to each other/themselves.
Beating Super Empire Strikes back as a kid was peak school yard bragging rights, games hard AF for no good reason.
R.I.P. Tuon for having that Pac Attack. 😔 🙏
this is becoming my favorite weekly show - please dont stop it when the 90s are "over lol
Thank you Dylan for speaking up for us game collectors. I'm so pissed how so many games are getting way to expensive for their own good. Like clock tower 2.
Dylan was on point with what he said about WATA and other retro markets
The Championship Pool to PacAttack transition was wonderful!🎉
Meanwhile, on Now in the 80s, Intellivision gets a port of Parker Brothers' Empire Strikes Back that had been released on the 2600 the year before.
Assuming next week's ant game is SimAnt, I can name at least one additional ant game: Anthill: Ants Ain't Saints on mobile and Nintendo Switch. Created by the same developers as SteamWorld Dig.
Also there are a bunch of PS1-era games based on the two backyard insect animated movies that came out around the same time, A Bug's Life and Antz.
Every time Dylan points out the bullshit going on in the resell/collector's market for some of these games I just love it.
I love the dynamic between Jared and Dylan, I wish you'd play into it a bit more.
Excellent timing on Welcome. Good pitch and expression, too.
Good detective skills editor Dylan!
Interesting fact about the Last Action Hero game, "Jack Slater", aka Arnie's character wasn't allowed to use guns in the game. That came from Arnie's lawyers himself and as well all know, Jack Slater NEVER used any guns in the Last Action Hero movie...
The Crash Dummies were a stroke of brilliance of the kind you don't see these days. Get parents to put their seat belts on by having their doe-eyed children tell them to. ;)
The absolute insane prices of retro games is the reason why I’ll stick to playing them by “borrowing” them from my “friends”.
I find it a bit weird that the Incredible Crash Dummies game is based on the PSAs, by way of the toy line and the CGI animated TV special, but they didn't have either of the main characters from the PSAs whose names were Vince and Larry, possibly because neither voice actor from the PSA, Jack Burns (Vince) or Lorenzo Music (Larry) were featured in the TV special.
Dylan is on fire this week !
Thank you for pointing out how fucking terrible the whole WATA scam is. I've talked to people who have no idea about game collecting telling me they're sitting on a gold mine because they have a copy of Mario 64 from when they were 12 and read an article where it was severely overpriced. I usually point out to them there were millions of copies made and it's easily available digitally, that the whole story of it selling for insane prices was a set up to artificially inflate the value.
Glad Dylan got that copy of Gauntlet Legends for the Dreamcast.
Dylan - I’m also a fan of Last Action Hero. It’s misunderstood and under-appreciated - a secret masterpiece.
I agree about Arnold! Those were my faves by him at the time too!
Me too Dylan....me too. I loved how other resellers would try to justify it with every excuse in the book. I appreciate it for it shows the divide of resellers who are only in this hobby to profit and enthusiasts who collect and sell duplicates or the like to help fund their hobby
The Incredible Crash Dummies is actually one of 12 games that during its release could be found on EVERY popular North American video game system (NES, SNES, Genesis, Master System, Gameboy, and Game Gear)
Oh, Sim Ant came out next week? That'll be fun, can't wait.
