I pretty tired of hearing about them from just about every outdoor or KETO channel. Pretty thorough marketing blitz. So, no, haven’t used them. I use another brand.
hey Justin, Ive always enjoyed your channel but have 2 big questions for you in regards to your video- how did you legally camp on the glacier within the National Park, and two- why did you say there are polar bears in the area? Grizzly and black bears yes- but not polar bears.
I have used LMNT recently. I did the Black Forest Trail in Pennsylvania (45 mi trail regarded as the hardest in PA) and it was the first trail that I used LMNT. Honestly, I was put off by the flavor at first because I didn't expect the saltiness of it and I only put it in 16 oz of water (it is recommended to put a pack in 33 oz if I am not mistaken). But, after that initial bottle, I followed the directions and the saltiness was not bad at all. I will say that I think it helped me maintain my energy because I was sweating quite a bit on that trip due to the constant ascents and descents and replacing my electrolytes was needed. At camp on the second night I made some coffee and mixed the chocolate salt flavor in with the coffee and it tasted great. Once I use the supply of LMNT I have now, I do plan on buying some more (probably will stick with citrus salt, orange salt, raspberry salt, and chocolate salt).
Pretty much never trying them now that they're being rammed down my throat by every outdoor channel.
I used it, the unflavored one specifically. On a wildland fire fighting assignment and was very pleased with it.
Appreciate your honesty. It seems that the outdoor/backpacking industry is in a race to pump out the latest and greatest expensive gear while allowing users with deep pockets to do the R&D.
That was certainly the case with MSR & Tents that weren't seam sealed.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
It’s amazing how far you’re willing to go or do for these tests. The prices of these equipments are way over my means but it’s great to know what’s created to maintain a hike safely in the wildest parts of the world. Thank you Justin!👍🏻🙂
Remember that in a lot of places the ground temperature can actually warmer than the air temperature because it can hold heat from beneath. On a glacier you'd get none of that so it is probably quite different than other conditions on regular ground.
Great work Justin thanks for the review
I could not be more excited for the Moonlite Elite! Such a great design with an awesome weight. I'm definitely willing to shell out some money for a setup like that
I bought regular moonlite, atleast it is supposed to be bit sturdier and it has a mesh seat. Both meaningfull for me, but that weight.
Elite certainly doesn't look bad but I don't think I can just shell money like that in a foreseeable future.
I can wait few years for a good deal or just be happy with what I have.
Excited your digging your Arc Haul. Been loving my Arc Blast for years. My latest adjustment has been from hip belts to Zpacks FUPA. So much easier to access stuff, although adds some awkwardness to putting your pack on.
“They are pointy and have a screw edge on them” best review of a product I’ve ever heard.
There's a reason they call me "justin the super reviewer"
You guys both put your reviews out at pretty much the same time. Coincidence? I think not!
EXACTLY the gear I been looking at...for someday! THANKS!!!!
If you were cold on a 8.5R value with outside temps above freezing I would think that something is wrong.
My sentiments. Temp just above freezing isn't anything as cold as below Zero, (Fahrenheit)
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
On a slab of deep freeze ice. You’ll never get warm.
@@billpetersen298 you will if you do the right things. After several years of artic warfare it is no problem.
Agreed. He may have done something out of the norm he isn’t aware of.
@@AR9ifywhat can be done ?
Definitely interesting results Justin. I'm glad you really test gear rather than just review it. I jumped on the S2S Etherlight XT extreme after a few youtubers put up initial reviews. I wish I'd waited until people had actually had a winter on them because they're not quite as warm as the R value suggests. They do best inflated until they have no give but then the comfort of the 4" thickness is all but gone. I think I'll try the new Xtherm NXT eventually. I live near the rockies in Alberta too so I know how cold it can get even in summer.
The wapta traverse is gnarly! Loved the vid; interested in Nemo’s response.
@justinoutdoors I love how you and Steven come at testing the same things in such different ways. And your joint podcast appearance was great. Great video
Steven is a great guy and has a great brain for testing! We sometimes swap thoughts and ideas for how and why certain gear is performing certain ways. It's great to have a resource like him!
@@JustinOutdoorsI bet he appreciates you just as much for the same reasons!😊
Great video! I can’t wait for winter!
Glad to see that the X mid set up well on such un even ground!!
Thrilled to see the improvements to the valve system. I'd like to know more about their response to your warmth issue. I'd love to know how this compares in the same conditions to the newer XTherm NXT. I like my current Nemo Insulated pad and would be willing to upgrade, but only if it is truly warmer than the Thermarest XTherm.
I raised the same question, Nemo Extreme vs XTherm NXT.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
Super helpful video, Justin. I just got back from 3 days, 2 nights, in K-Country. Oddly, I had two nights of terrible sleep. While I thought my XTherm was overinflated, after watching your video, I know for a fact I was dehydrated. I already use earplugs and pull my toque down over my eyes. Thanks, pal.
Bro you should have over 250k subs by now. TH-cam is disrespecting this awesome channel!! Big love for all that you do man. You rule!!
I feel advection becomes more of an issue with large thickness airpads. This is something the ASTM standard doesn't quite nail I feel. I have experience with various editions of the Thermorests, some with mylar, some without; but all with the triangular matrix (which does control the movement of air in decent way). I've also had experience with the S2S Etherlight Insulated. At 1C in my backyard, I agree that despite the S2S R3.2 (or so rating), I felt cold, even compared to my non-mylar Thermorest. I felt warmest on the Xlite NXT.
While high R values suggest better use for cold ground/air situations (based on ASTM testing), without some way to control the sideways movement of air within the pad (especially in large volume pads like the S2S Etherlight and perhaps the Nemo as you've described), any air in the pad that you do warm up underneath you will just end up advecting and mixing with cold air in contact with the any part of the pad that is not in contact with your body (i.e, sides, any part of the surface outside of your body imprint [or sleeping bag if you use a mummy]). This problem is exacerbated by every single movement you make on the pad.
I think this is where the Thermorest pads (with the triangular matrix) have nailed this issue and have consistently garnered praise for best real-world use warmth-to-weight ratio. Not perfect, but still consistently at/near the top and remains the "standard" to what others measure themselves to.
OTOH, can it be argued that there's a limit to what size a pad is acceptable if the goal is preserving body heat? Maybe you don't want a pad that's too much larger than, say, your mummy sleeping bag in order to minimize advective heat loss? A non-issue if you use a quilt.
Air movement within the pad is the biggest contributor to the "feels like" perceptive temperature rating. R-Value isn't everything
@@alexk1486About 6 years ago I picked up a returned Exped DownMat 9 LW for less than half MSRP, I used it once at about 10-15F in conjunction with a NEMO Sonic 0F and was chilly. Definitely more chilly than its R=7.8 (IIRC) rating should have left me feeling. I think Justin reviewed or tested one and said his thought was the down doesn’t evenly distribute. I’ve used my 2022 Xtherm down to around -10F with a FF Eider -10F bag (w/6oz overfill) and was actually uncomfortably warm. It’s not an apples-to-apples comparison, the Exped was used on a wood bunk in a cabin near the summit of Mt Chocorua NH while the XTherm was used in a tent with a Reflectix full floor liner that I made. Maybe I’ll bring both out for a 2-nighter this winter.
The ASTM standard should probably change so the hot plate on top is only about as wide as the typical persons body contact area with the pad. From videos I’ve watched, it looks like right now the hot and cold plates are both the full width of a pad. You do get some convective heat loss out the long end of the pad, but not the sides.
Yes a wider bathtub for 2 people, the industry and hikers are moving to 25 inch wide sleeping pads such a good thing.
Trying my first LMNT today - I really like it and I’m fussy 😅
Did this hike with a scramble up the Onion last year. Sad to see the glacier has retreated a large amount when I compare it with last year. Great video as always Justin!
Love these kind of reviews but damn what a tease. I WANT IT ALL AND I WANT IT ALL NOW! 😂
Super excited for the new Nemo Elite Moonlite chair to come out. I have two versions of the Helinox Zero and Highback but I still fill like I'm sliding out of them, and the sitting area of the chairs seem to be cut short to save weight. Am I the only person who is expecting this issue? I've also been heavily reliant on my Klymit Motion 60 pack due to the comfort of Air Frame. I suffer a lot of vertebra damage and the frame really has been an enjoyment for me. I'm curious about trying the Arc Haul and seeing if I'll get the same or better results while carrying 18-28 pounds max.
Thought my standard Tensor slept cold too. Picked up the new 25” wide NeoAir and it’s comfortable enough and warm. Especially for its light weight. And the new one is much quieter and a bit thicker too.
I bought the Nemo Tensor Insulated a few years ago. I also slept cold compared to the Thermarest Neo Air. So I sold it to my friend. I was excited about this Tensor Extreme but perhaps maybe not as much now.
Great test! Thank you very much.
Re: smell and bears. Mylar bags (usually PET film with aluminum foil sandwiched in between) make the best smell reducing bags btw. This is because aluminum is impermeable to gases (unlike most plastics). If the material can't diffuse gas through it, then it won't allow smell to diffuse through either. I spent awhile researching vacuums, vacuum systems, and vacuum insulation panels for a project (made my own vacuum insulated cooler). Vacuum insulation panels (VIP's for short) are essentially mylar bags (though I think nylon and polyethylene combos are used instead of PET) with a core, spacing material in it like fumed silica. Getters are put inside and then the huge majority of the air is sucked out (minus some stray stray gas molecules here and there) and then it is sealed/welded closed while under de-pressure.
Some VIP's are rated to be effective, high insulators for up to 50 years. Most of that is due to the aluminum foil that is sandwiched inside the plastic films. The aluminum really slows down gaseous exchange. Not many materials can stand up to a medium to high vacuum without either 1. offgassing, or 2. allowing some gaseous diffusion. Aluminum does neither. VIP insulation doesn't last longer, simply because the aluminum is sandwiched between plastic films and so there is always some small amount of plastic material that is exposed to the ambient conditions, rather than pure aluminum. That small amount of exposed plastic does allow some gas diffusion and offgassing to happen (which is why industry also puts getters in there, to absorb these).
Point being, is that if you roll it up well, mylar bags will extremely, extremely limit food smell diffusion out into the general environment. Bears, while they have a simply amazing sense of smell, are not magical creatures that break the laws of physics. If a material is good enough to hold a vacuum long term, it is good enough to severely reduce smell-gaseous diffusion (since smell and gas diffusion are intrinsically connected, if you limit/reduce the latter, you reduce the latter). You just have to make sure it is sealed well, for that you want to fold it over itself several times (at least 3) and maybe use a piece of tape or some velcro to keep it closed.
Much better than nylofume bags etc. The "secret sauce" again, being the aluminum foil.
Cheers fellow Justin
Hello Justin, one quick question, please, comparing Moonlite Elite and Helinox Zero - which one is less intrusive for hamstrings? which allows more natural position with legs streching forward?
"Puckered up a bit...." lol Nice video Mr Justin. That looks like an interesting pad.
Nice video, both you and Steve said felt cold ! I am curious what temp i can use my nemo tensor insulated ! By the way your view looked much better than Steve’s freezer 😂
Interested what is your opinion for the Decathlon FH900 jacket, have you tested it enough yet?
I’m using the Exped Down Mat 7 for 3years in winter and felt like sleeping on a radiator already ( R-value 5.9 )
That's promising for the Nemo line. I love my Tensor. I hope it doesn't start to have any problems.
Oooo, looking forward to that Moonlite Elite!
Hi Justin, when will you do a full review of the Moonlight Elite chair please? I’d love to know more, I’ve never carried a backpacking chair before but due to health reasons I’m going to have to and again due to health reasons I need it to be as light as possible. I’d love to know what you think of the elite. I’m in Australia so I can’t buy the REI chair. And I have held off on the Helinox Chair Zero as I think it’s too low to the ground to get up from, from what I’ve seen. Thank you! 🙏
The 'coldness' experience is primarily a result of being on an ice cube. It is all about "Heatflow" (Cold Flow) transfer. The ice is an excellent "conductor' of cold. But you also have to think about the ice as a 'cold sink'. This phenomenon is used in Food Processing industry to quick freeze/chill foods. And part of that is the phase change btu requirement to have the ice go from solid to liquid. As good as a multi-baffle pad is at slowing heat transfer a closed cell foam pad under this pad would have made a world of difference. While we experience this as 'Cold Flow" it is really about the heat flow out of our body. Closed cell Foam is always going to beat baffled air but any kind of strand/fiber fill insulation mat will also beat even baffled air.
Is the durston a legit 4 season tent, or is there something else you'd recommend for winter?
That area is SPECTACULAR! I’ve been to some very scenic places and that is up there with all of them. Jealous!
Picked up the Rei Helix this summer and it's been fantastic. probably.just going to use a switch back i gossamer gear pad for later this season. notice you haven't been wearing the app gear hoodie anymore? Didn't meet your favorite?
Greetings from NorCal, thanks Justin, always appreciate your reviews. I don’t backpack anymore because I am at least as old as your father, maybe older, but I am still an avid daypacker and still using the Osprey Syncro 20 that you recommend a while back. Btw, I would not have gone over the scary boulder, but you are still a youngster so have at that kind of stuff. Slainte (cheers) as my Irish father would say.
I got the exped dura 8 down pad it ridiculous warm and comfortable
Did you try the Uberlite as well? What was the difference?
I’m looking forward to seeing more testing of that sleeping pad. I’m concerned that the flat insulation layers will allow cold to enter the pad from the side.
I am also looking forward to finding out the price of the new chair and pads.
I currently own the Nemo Moonlite that I got on sale for 50% off. My biggest gripe is the fact that it doesn’t have a ground sheet for snow or sand, so I’m looking forward to seeing pricing on the new model.
I've been backpacking for years but haven't wondered into winter/cold weather backpacking just yet. So this comment is a genuine question, not an insult. If the pads been tested to ASTM standard to get that 8.5 R-value would that not remove the concern for cold air coming in from the side?? Or is there more to it than just "it's been tested"??
I want to fish there, lol...oh, and thanks for the review! I got the Therm-a-Rest XTherm NXT...yes, it is crinkly sounding, but I like the 70D on the bottom, and 30D on top...
Tough call, but I got the new X-Therm since it had a MW Mummy (very wide with sparks & plenty of noise). The Nemo certainly looked more comfy, but the mummy shape works nice in my hammocks. The Thermarest is so wide I could almost drop back to the standard Nemo width, but I am glad TR offered the nice, wide mummy pad. I only assume it is as warm as the older X-Therm. Cool sparks & electric lighning strikes when you put away the sleeping bag.
How is the chair compared to Helinox? It looks like the back is a little bit lower than chair zero
Is there any update on this pad and the feedback from Nemo?
I also want to know
I have the same question?

No, thank YOU!
I really have to go to Canada sometime. Beautiful country!
I watch a number of camping channels and yours is the first I've seen to be concerned with polar bears lol wild! Btw Alberta born and now living in Souther Ontario. I've been camping from Ontario to PEI, but getting back to Alberta and hiking amd camping there is the dream. Cheers!
I do wonder about the thermals of sleeping on a glacier vs snow. Snow would insulate with the air pockets and I think ice has roughly 4 times the thermal conductivity of water. It would have been great to see a head to head of the tensor extreme with anXTherm NXT but I suspect one would sleep cold with either pad with those conditions...
I, too, wish he'd compared the Nemo Extreme vs XTherm NXT. Someone will, soon, hopefully. I have the XTherm that I'm satisfied with for the overnight conditions I camp in.
I "like" & am a long time subscriber.

Hi Justin. It would be really great to see a comparison review and recommendation on this pad against the xtherm. It’s the current undisputed king of warm winter pads. Most people considering the nemo will be picking it or the xtherm. Great video as always.
I, like others, am looking forward to a good comparison review of the Nemo Extreme vs XTherm NXT.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
the one issue I have with the xtherm is the noise. I did not think it would bother me but... yep. crinkly crinkly. It's enough to make me consider swapping it out for this one.

@@dancurtis461 hi Dan. Tbh the noise isn’t an issue for me but I know it does annoy a lot of people The xtherm pad excels in weight and warmth but not comfort - especially for side sleepers. If the nemo is as light and warm as the xtherm in real world testing , but more comfortable then I’d make the change…
I hope Dan makes a more budget version of that tent with the new ChallengeTNT fabric
Love the videos Justin! As for polar bears, I think you’re referring to a spoof story where some got relocated to the Canadian Rockies. There’s no polar bears outside of zoos in BC or Alberta.
Would it be warmer in snow ?
The windburner melts snow basically as well as the reactor and weighs less. I’ve used both on wa volcanos and in the alpine to melt snow.
Bro fended off a Grizzly and now wants the smoke from a polar bear 😂😂😂
In June of 1979, I camped at the bottom of Mt. Blanc in France. I had a summer weight sleeping bag with a zipper that didn't work. I froze! The air would come down over the glacier at night and the temperature dropped dramatically. Once I figured out that I needed to cover my head, it was much better. Can you use one of the laser thermometers to show us the difference in temperature between the ground and the top of the pads?
Polar bear? Come on Justin!❤
I bought my MSR Reactor a few years ago for $110. It is now $265. Insanity!
I know what you mean! I had a windburner 1L in 2017, got it as a gift. I checked the price and it was 189 over the years but today it is 259! (CAD pricing).

I might have missed it, but I didn't notice mention of the temp rating for your quilt. Also curious to know the clothing you slept in.

shoulda tested just adding a silver matt on top of the pad. ps. not sure black surface is the way to go, pps. do you think the moisture in the air would have made the sleep cold? 0deg is still very moist? -10 would drop all the moisture from the air?

Super interesting idea! I'm going to look into that!
That's kind of sad that it was a little cold, I've used my xTherm on ice before and it was super cozy.
I, too, have NEVER slept cold when my sleeping bag is on my XTherm.
Will you be doing an update on the Tensor Extreme now that they are available for purchase by the general public?
Nemo sent me a replacement from their production stock and I have been testing that out extensively. Stay tuned for updated over the next month! On December 15, I have a video where I A-B test it with the Xtherm dropping.

I wonder does the mountains get as cold as the midwest -30 to -50 F?
I've skied the Wapta numerous times and skied the Bow-Yoho traverse as well, you will love doing it! The Wapta is less committing than the Bow-Yoho from a navigation and terrain standpoint, so it's a great way to see the area. Highly recommend mid March to mid April for more light, warmer temps and a more stable snowpack.
We were up on the icefields this summer doing some mountaineering and all that bare ice was heartbreaking. The toe of the glacier above the Bow Hut has receded so much, omg.
As for sleeping pads, the first sleeping pad I ever used in the winter without a closed cell foam pad with it was the X-Therm, and I can't say enough about the now-old-standard for winter capable pads. I've used mine below -30C on the Columbia Icefields and along with my WM Puma, was very comfy all night. th-cam.com/video/fRJQN-RjYvg/w-d-xo.html
What Hokas are those?
I have 2 Mammut King Size pump mats that are REAL 8.2 r-value mats. They weigh 1560 grams but are good down to -40C. I have tried them that low in Northern Norway and I slept like a baby. It’s too bad they don’t make them anymore but the ultralight boom killed them. I don’t trust any lightweight pads in extreme conditions.
3 inch thick garbage couch foam has about a rating of 6.0 and it will keep you toasty hot on ground like that, where do they get these 8.5 astm ratings from anyway? Very deceptive in the way that heat is stored and insulated.

@@JustinOutdoors awesome. Thank you sir.

@@JustinOutdoors sounds like a bit of an unfair test for the tensor, since you lost the heat that it was supposed to help retain for you....?
@@hermeticallysealed My body generated enough heat that it should have been fine with an 8.5 r-value pad. I've A-B tested pads like this before and the pads adapt. I actually just got back from a trip where I tested a pad I got cold on, switched to a warmer pad and then was toasty.
@@JustinOutdoors i get it it's hard to solve for so many variables
Ive heard from a couple of others that the new nemo pad doesn’t feel as warm as it is rated. I wonder what the consensus will be when the pad is finally released.
I, too, will be interested in what others have to say about their sleeping experiences on the Nemo Extreme.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
I'm puzzled as to why you felt cold from the ice coming through the pad with that R value. Decades ago, I slept two nights on a glacier on my original version of the self-inflating Thermarest pad that was only 1.5 inches thick and stayed toasty warm. I don't know what the R value of those old Thermarests was, but I imagine it would be much less than the one quoted for the Nemo pad.
Was it a big orange pad from thermarest? I think I have the same one. Rolls up because it can't fold. I'm a big fan of them I still use it from time to time to car camp.
Can you still use this in the summers, in the Sierras?
The high Sierras are where I frequently overnight & are nearly in my backyard.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
3 months have gone by. When are you going to do another test/review of this pad?
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
I've been testing it the entire time and have comments on it in multiple videos.
could it be you wet the pad by putting it on the ice? Nylon can absorb some water than poly right?
How much of the top surface of the Nemo was exposed to cold air? It's not just the ground you have to worry about. You also have radiative heat loss from the top of the pad.
Exactly, there are a lot of factors I am running through in order to try and isolate what is happening.
Maybe something like a Reflectix pad sleeve with the center cut out to let heat that transfers through the bottom of your bag into the pad. I haven’t been able to find an R-value for Reflectix by itself, only in conjunction with air spaces and building materials. Though the floor liner I made for a tent did allow me to put bare hands and stocking feet on it at around -10F.
I'm curious about this, too. I know I definitely sleep warmer when my quilt drapes over the edges of my pad, rather than be strapped close to my body. It's one of the reasons why I stick to a regular width pad rather than the wide.
What part of the canadian rockies was this? Have a buddy up in calgary and we are trying to find a spot like this to checkout the ice fields. Awesome video, love your content and reviews!

Hi Justin! Have you got any answers from Nemo about the pad?
Do you now when it’s gonna be released?
Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪

really you’re gonna tease us like that with the new Durston 2p+?? 😩😅
Gosh I love hearing the metric system.
justin_indoors, at least the glacier is better scenario than a freezer as mylifeindoors did!
I guess when we don’t have glaciers in Texas…it was worth a shot. But both sounds like the same results
Xmid Pro 2+ floor dimensions and weight? Guessing 54" wide and around 22oz but just confirming.
Tensor sounds disappointing. I wonder if the baffle fabric connections are transferring cold or otherwise limiting insulation ability. Say what you want about Thermarest but they know what they're doing with regards to durability and insulation ratings.
I am not allowed to reveal!
My favorite Pad is still the S2S Etherlight XT . I don’t know why but I never get cold on it and it’s so comfortable and I love the pumpsack that is the stuffsack too .
I get cold on it starting around freezing temps 😢 Otherwise it is the gold standard in comfort IMO
Wow. That MSR Reactor stove is $289 USD!! You weren't joking about it being crazy expensive.
I bought an MSR Whisperlite stove back in the late 60's when they first hit the market. It still works like new. Paid the princely sum of $35.00 for it. A huge improvement over the Sterno Stove I'd been using.

@justinoutdoors what is the name of the hike?
