I have almost everything you listed, and agree with all of them except the Nylofume. The first times out, I liked it but now...man, it's soooo crunchy and loud, I can't stand that sound. Although, they're cheap as dirt....so maybe put a new one in the pack every other time, that might work for me. I'm right around your base weight as well...with the Dan Durston combo - Kakwa44L and Xmid Pro1P. Good stuff buddy, can't wait to see what you have in store for this winter.. Maybe a Hotsie Hammock outing? Hot Tenting with 2 ppl is doable, if you can split up the weight...and get a UL stove.
$30 for a pot gripper is ridiculous 😂
Saving weight on pot handles vs. carrying an extra piece and looking after it? I prefer to carry less items.
@ Indeed. The weight savings are negligible too.
To each their own! I enjoy my little pot gripper and you'll have to pry it out of my cold starved hands. :P
You do have to admit in todays economy, it is ridiculously expensive. Doesn’t mean it isn’t useful, just more in the want rather than need category for many.
$30 is a couple of beers and a burger with tip. Stop being broke.
I will keep the handles on my Toaks. I use a 3x3 inch scrap piece of leather as my pot handle holder.
Decathlon just opened another store in Toronto. I managed to get there for the grand opening and snagged a down jacket for only $51CAD 🥳 I went looking for a merino tshirt and walked out with a bag full of stuff 😂
Cut the corners round. As things rub against your leukotape, no angles meaning less peeling off your feet 😉
Decathlon's 1st BC store is opening their pop-up store, next week Sat Oct 28 in Metrotown across from MUJI with the regular store opening Spring 2024 next to the Bay
I don't even hike much and I still enjoy these gear videos!
That $30 carbon fiber handle that only saves 9g is awesome 🤣
X-Mid pro 2+ sounds super interesting. Earlier this spring I purchased X-Mid2 Reg version instead of a pro because Pro was advertised as 48 inch wide and reg version as 52 inch. And we use Zenbivy Double Bad 50" as our sleep system, and it just fits inside the 52" floor of our tent. Having said that, we still have no problems with condensation, as it is a double wall tent, so our quilt does not get wet.
Just casually sprinkling the world premier of the X Mid Pro 2+ in there haha. Hoping to get me one on Wednesday! Great video! Hoping to get some of these items for my GDT trip next summer. However, definitely not stuffing a pot handle for a small expensive gripper that is only 6 oz. lighter
Couple good picks here. Definately look into some for the new season of 2024
I've been following you for a few years now and have been very happy with some of your recommendations like the Helix and the OR sun hoodie. Do you prefer the Arc Haul to the Flash 55 now?
Im willing to compromise on most items to shed off the weight except for my sleep system. I tried the ultralight pillows and my sleep grewtly suffered. I guess my heavier pillow is my "luxory" item.
I wondered about the pillow myself. I thought why not carry a waterproof pouch of some sort you can stuff with clothing not in use--especially some of that Merino wool. I've never seen a blow-up style that worked.
Thank you very much for the interesting video.
I often watch videos on your channel.
Very good content! 👍
Much respect to you from Montenegro!
The prices on some of these items is insane!!!
Some are, but some people are willing to pay for something that is going to be comfortable on trail and at camp - especially if they get out on a lot of trips. For someone who backpacks a handful of days a year, expensive gear might not be worth it.
Hi Justin, was wondering where did you find the long handle trekking pole? Really interested in buying one.
I love leukotape as well, except for the adhesive residue it leaves on my socks (liner or wool) which is difficult to remove.
A lil alcohol from my alcohol stove cook kit, does the trick to dissolve the glue. Methyl hydrate. Just be careful as it's poisonous, and easily absorbed into ur skin. And alot cheaper than bioethanol here in 🇨🇦 $14.99 for 3.78L jug = 12¢/30ml burn 2cups water
Awesome video.
Just a small note in terminology, when referring to down fill power, it's "fill power", not "power fill".
Looking forward to your next video, keep it up.
Still one of the best when it comes to gear reviews! Love this kind of content.
Would you mind clarifying the decathalon merino wool pants(404 link for me)? Been meaning to upgrade to wool over the cheap poly I currently use. I'm guessing either the Forclaz Trek 500 Merino Wool Tights or Mountain Trekking Merino Wool Base Layer Tights Leggings - MT900, but unsure which.
Great videos by the way; I quite appreciate your succinct style. They have been invaluable to me in learning this hobby. Cheers!
I’m looking for input on what size Zpacks Arc Haul to buy. How tall are you? How big is your waist?
Where do I get that carrier where you put the bear spray in?
great thank you
Hey gang! I am currently evaluating packs, for my ultralight setup. There are just too many options out there.... Presently I am looking at the Archaul or ULA's Ultra Circuit. Its just the Archaul has had mixed reviews, both about the pack and their customer service. I have heard good things about ULA although they don't seem to get much press. Your thoughts?
What trekking pole are you using in this video? It looks like exactly what I've spent some time searching for!
Question: what clothes would you use to stay warm at 20 F?
Hi Justin. Where is the first aid bag from? Where is the Swedish cloth from?
What’s the best backpack you would recommend over 40l
What is that bear spray holster/bag you have there?
which size bag is exactly is the bag for the helinox???
On the lightweight comfort side, my Tarptent Double Rainbow Li is an awesome shelter. 50” wide, real headroom, can be freestanding, can be double walled, can be crammed into smaller uneven spots. Worth the extra weight to me, but still under 2lbs. However, it is expensive like other 2P DCF tents.
I have the same Tarptent Double Rainbow Li and also like the room and head room.
Another great tent option.
Da breeze
That's a great recommendation for a tent! Comfort is definitely important when it comes to outdoor gear. Speaking of gear, have you heard about the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series? It's a versatile powerhouse with an impressive capacity and fast recharging capabilities. Check it out if you're looking for a reliable backup power source for your outdoor adventures or even for home use. Keep exploring and enjoying the great outdoors!
Hyperlight elevate 22
Durston x mid 1
Nemo tensor
Down vest + the red bag liner from rei= ultimate ultralight pack
What are those trekking poles?
how tall is your back and what size of backpack do you have? Seems like if its too low the load lifters physically cannot do the job properly...
Are the speeping pants really merino wool?
I’ve been using the DreamSleeper for a year but I use a neck gaiter around it so I’m not sleeping on plastic and then I tie shock cord around the inside to attach it to my pad. This allows you to use a pillowcase whereas your method does not.
I just do a little half hitch knot. It's easy to untie one side and add a buff :)
Ok you don’t have a link to the Swedish cloth.
"I have my pink titanium spoon. Because I'm in bear country, this is gonna be especially important to try and fight off any bears that might try and attack me." 😆
😂
Curious why you chose that sleeping pad instead of the thermalite xlite nxt?
More comfortable
If you could unhook the pillow strap, what would your thoughts be on sliding on a buff or something to work as a pillow case?
I only do a half hitch on the knot, so it'd be easy to untie one side and slide a buff on. Great for warmer trips where you might not be wearing a hat.
Ese plumífero de Decathlon lo tengo yo también. El año pasado me costó 49€ en España. 100$ me parece exagerado, la verdad .
Any chance to explore vegan gear in a future video? Specifically, ultralight non-down sleep systems, jackets, non-wool basewear / socks and hats, etc?
Calculated most of the show prices and some guesses. Total of around 3.3k. That's a lot for regular folks. Even is you spread it over multiple trips and compare it to a mid level hotel stay or Airbnb.
It's about what I spent to just go visit my sister for a week on the other side of the country with flights, car rental, hotels, and food. It's a lot of money, but not too bad when spread out over the hundreds of days/nights you'll get out of the gear.
Nobody is out there hiking and camping in the backcountry to save money. As Justin said before, if you do multiple trips a year the added comfort is worth it, but obviously you should get cheaper gear if you only go out for a few days a year
What has your experience been with the Ursack? I've seen people say that it doesn't work very well and actually rips easily. Obviously, it's going to be better than nothing and maybe they didn't use other smell proof bags as well.
Mines never ripped but it isnt an ideal set up. It holds water if wet and the sack is significantly decreased in capacity if you velcro it all the way. Personally, i use it on the bottom of my pack to protect my sleep system incase i fall and a rock rips open the bag.
I haven't had any incidents. Most of the places I backpack, where bears might be a nuisance, have bear lockers or hangs. The best use (for me) for an Ursack is when I am in more remote areas where the bears are not as used to humans and would probably just walk by a properly used Ursack. If you're in an area where bears are used to humans and looking for food, a bear can is probably the answer.
I thought you were moving away from Merino layers. Are you reconsidering or is it a situational decision? I moved away years ago
It is situational for sure. I like it in above freezing conditions for around camp but never as an active layer or during winter (unless it's a small percentage as part of a blend for camp clothing).
Chairs all the way!!
If you ever need another pink titanium spoon (which as I understand are no longer sold), you can anodize it yourself with water, baking soda, and some 9-volt batteries (see th-cam.com/video/Y_A53PWmBLo/w-d-xo.html). You'll need a lot of 9-volt batteries, tho, as it takes ~65 volts to get pink.
Absolutely going to anodize my dutchware bling!!
Great video once again Justin! Hey, can you also link that sack you have the helinox chair in please? Thanks! Enjoy your honeymoon! I spent quite a bit of time in that area when I was on active duty. Great choice!
It's from Hilltop Packs. They make custom sacks
How come you didn't indicate the price of the Durston X-mid pro 2+?
It wasn't determined at the time this video was made
hello Justin, I just sold my Duplex, I plan to buy a single-wall tent, I'm hesitating between an Xmid pro 1 or an altaplex, knowing that I hike alone. I hesitate to take an Xmid pro 2 for more comfort. Which model do you think would be the most appropriate? thank you in advance. Sincerely.
hi, can i ask why you sold your duplex in favor of another single wall tent? thx.
Are you still using the Platypus water filter? I ask because I've heard others have had problems with it. Sawyer Squeeze is & has been my water filter choice from the get-go.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada
I do! Same one since release
I actually think that Ultralight and comfort are the same thing. Not different, where they ought to be contrasted. I am very comfortable being ultralight. I am very uncomfortable being comfortable. Does that work? Idk. Just saying
Just wanted to throw in an alternate suggestion for dental. Switching from tabs to toothsoap can save space and weight. 😊
BRO! Who makes that first aid kit bag
Hilltop packs
Spacebear bags
@@JustinOutdoors just ordered 2 for me and my lady, thanks !
Evidently "toque" is Canadian for "knit cap".
Just done a review of my trusty toaks with another brand from Amazon. Spoiler, the toaks isn't as good 😅
Which brand on Amazon. I'd be willing to look at one.

WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY ???
*internet explodes*
I think we need to change the rules a bit. Sub 10lbs if you’re under 6 foot. If you’re over 6 foot you should get + 2 lbs. I mean its just not fair. Our bags and mattresses are longer and wider. Are clothes are much bigger. A lot of stuff is bigger and I wish to appeal the UL rules. Who do I talk to about this…😂
I think it's Darwin?
This is a point often missed a men’s S/M kit is always lighter than a men’s L/XL kit.
Have you tried to chop your ankles to get below 6ft? ;) ;) ;)
CHALLENGE! Where's the pack wizard for this one? I'm skeptical you came in around 10 lbs with all the gear listed in this video. Also, you may want to give a guesstimate for the weight of your phone. Not everyone has the same but it's part of the base weight.
He has a sat phone and a smartwatch. He forgot the smartwatch.
His Enduro 2 smartwatch is listed in his regular video description
Here you go :) www.packwizard.com/s/pRi7ElM
@@JustinOutdoors Cool thanks! Yeah no phone listed, no med kit listed. Add .5 oz for the garmin clip. Any bags to hold gear in? Bug head net. Sunscreen and/or bug spray. Chapstick. Extra towel (besides shammie) for either your hands or wiping down pot. Extra mini bic as a backup for the brs stove. Car key, some cards. Patch kit. Without the ursack or bear spray you're still around 11-12lbs base weight. Besides the price tag it's still a very impressive 3 season load out for colder weather!
"My wife gets upset if I get sunburned" really? Like, wife upset is worse than skin cancer?
Yes…
He said he had drugs arrest him
You know damn well them mayfly sandals aint comfortable.....
9 grams…… seriously?
Did this dude really get excited about saving 9 grams???? Damn I'm trying not to be mean.
I'm sorry but that is a ridiculous price for a rucksack😮
i find your videos hard to listen to, because it sounds like you are reading things and are bored. can you not just talk to us normally without reading things?
Been trying for 4 years
@@JustinOutdoors Few ideas: 1. slow down teleprompter 2. take a Valium 3. just try to make some pause 😂😂😂
Rich man's hobby ?
Add that gear up.
I guess ultralight is, but backpacking can be done on the cheap from Walmart and stuff.
Hardly a rich persons hobby. You are sleeping in the woods for basically free vs a vacation where you are booking a room for every night. Backing trips are cheap in comparison.
@@jakeva9802 Indeed. Also, cheaper items than what is shown by Justin can be used
you point the real, thanks !!! and the worst is that you pay a room in mid season, and you are freezing at night, as they is no heating started. Even in winter lots of hostels cut the heating in middle ogf night @@jakeva9802
companies like this that think you can make extreme price gouges because "it's ultralight" are a fuckin problem
