"Maamme" - National Anthem of Finland [Finnish and Swedish]

- The anthem's lyrics were taken from a poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a Swedish-speaking poet, called “Vårt land” (Our Land). The song was first sung in 1848 by a student group and became popular in Scandinavia and many of his patriotic poems, including Vårt land were used by promoters of Finnish nationalism. The poem was translated into Finnish some decades later, after Vårt land was well established as a national song, by Paavo Eemil Kajander and became the anthem before 1917 independence.

I just mentioned Swedish for the sake of accuracy and exhaustivity, as Finland is lucky enough to be a bilingual country (even multilingual if you count Lappish and Carelian). I am aware that many Finnish-speakers are very resentful towards the Swedish language but, honestly, it's not only part of their history and identity, it's also a cultural enrichment to be part of a multilingual nation. @Alec Hinshaw they came from the same tribes in what is now european side of russia's border with its asian side, then either tribe went their own ways. i believe the finnic tribes came from the european side and hungarians came from the asian side

Think it is time to make an important distinction. Finlandssvenskar, Swedish-Finns, are Finns who speak finlandssvenska, which is Finland's version of Swedish. Using the Swedish flag is not entirely correct, as there is another flag for finlandssvenskar which is yellow and red. Finlandssvenska has evolved enough to be distinct from Sweden's swedish, both in melody, words we use and in some cases grammar. It is influenced by Finnish, Russian and various dialects in Finland.

@@mrman9977 You're right, Finland would most likely only directly annex some parts of Swedish Lapland. The island of Gotland would also be good for military use. Stockholm would be heavily monitored and occupied by Finnish soldiers.
The rest would probably be turned into a satellite state and policies implemented to suppress resistance.

It's a bit strange to put swedish flag over Finland when the swedish language part starts.
Yes, swedish is Finland's second official language. But swedish speaking finns are just as finns as finnish speaking finns. They are not swedes.
Think about the Belgian anthem for example. It can be sung in French, Dutch or German. But are French or Dutch flags flown during Belgian anthem? No.
Nothing against Sweden of course, we share a long common history under one country and the relations are great.

By the way, the Finns fought mainly with young former collective farmers (the USSR army was still conscripted in the region), who were recently either students or peasants, there was no one to teach them at all, because as you know, many officers of the Russian Empire were either killed or removed from their posts, or expelled from the country, there was essentially no one to train soldiers. Simply put, at first it was real cannon fodder. Until the officers were threatened that either they equip the soldiers better and begin to move at least somehow, or they themselves will fight for the entire army.
