- "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" German for "Hail to Thee in the Victor's Crown", (literally: "Hail to Thee in the Victor's Wreath") was the Kaiserhymne (imperial anthem) of the German Empire from 1871 to 1918 and royal anthem of Prussia from 1795 to 1918.
Before the foundation of the Empire in 1871, it had been the royal anthem of Prussia since 1795 and remained it after 1871. The melody of the hymn derived from the British anthem "God Save the King". For these reasons, the song failed to become popular within all of Germany. Not only did it fail to win the support of most German nationalists, but it also was never recognized by the southern German states, such as Bavaria or Württemberg. At the near end of World War I, the German Empire was overthrown and "Das Lied der Deutschen" was adopted as the national anthem of its successor, the Weimar Republic.
It is often called the official national anthem of the German Empire. However the German Empire never had an official anthem like the Weimar Republic or the Federal Republic of Germany (Lied der Deutschen). Together with "Die Wacht am Rhein" both songs had the status of unofficial national anthems.

Well, Bismarck, most likely, was the most important and significant (positive) figure in more recent german history.
I wished there was a Bismarck-day or something. Germans really need to get a better grasp of their culture, past and history.

My great grandfather joined into the Austro-Hungarian troops and fought the WW I. After a period, his family came here to south america rebuild their lifes. My grandma was german but sadly i've never talked to her about her life and her father's one. I was a teenage when she passed away but i loved her so much. She was a tough woman. I know all of these things because of my father who told me it. As he, i won't let my family's legacy die. Even though i'm brazilian, there's germanic blood running in my veins.

@@patro734 my great grandfather didn’t fight in WW1 but he was in world war 2 and took part in the invasion of Italy, my grandmother said that her mother(my great grandmother) told her that before he went to Italy he was normal, but afterwards he was a completely different person, almost like he was disturbed by what happened. I don’t know what exactly he did but I’m guessing he was probably bogged down at either Anzio or monte casino if he was a completely different person afterwards because those battles were insane

The song wasn't Nazi at all, but when I sang it for the rehearsal, some of the parents and teachers were concerned that it was"sending the wrong message" and thought that to an audience that didn't know German it would sound a lot like the Nazi anthem. So, the next thing you know, the director is sending me an email the literal night before the production basically telling me that we needed to do a better job introducing the song or I couldn't do it. Long story short, it was a load of b.s. but we did get it resolved and I was able to sing the song.

In my class on WWI, we read a primary source account of Germany’s invasion of Belgium that detailed Germany marching through Brussels. I remember it said that the German soldiers and the cavalry riding through together were more men than he had ever seen in his life, and as they passed they sang this song. If I could ever see any historical event in person that would most certainly be it.

Frater, I am aware of how it "works". I wasn't claiming that he would be emperor of Germany, my point is that we still have Prince and Dukes in Bavaria (from the family that was the King of Bavaria). And I would not want Bavaria to be under a Prussian emperor again, Bavaria lost territory last time around because of Prussian decision. I'm good with Bavaria having a king again, but not to be ruled by Prussians. I'd rather Bavaria go independent than be ruled by Prussia.

Austria is thus a German State, but they didn't join the union, and they were banned from joining anyway. Sorta like if Texas never got annexed by the USA.
