Thats what thr ev10 lineup is for. Quick photos, quick videos and compact for capturing candid moments on vacations. I prefer not to use my smartphone because the battery gets drain quickly so using a dedicated camera like an ev10 works best
@@simoz78 That would be nice. I mean you can do that in post, but yeah, one more step not needed and go straight to your media platform. Especially since you can import your LUT etc.
Big Gerald, did I miss the section on stabilisation? The lack of IBIS and only cropped digital stabilisation are big negatives, surely? Also, a better comparison when talking about price is the A6700, which is much cheaper than the FX30 but has 4K 120p, an EVF and IBIS. I think that it's $400 more than this camera but what you get for it seem worth it.
Still overheats, but this camera is aimed at vlogging and content creating. I’d say the A6700 is probably the best value camera with the most features. I’d personally get an FX30 with an A6700 for stills and AI features and the fan is so important for reliability.
As an owner of two zve-10 I can really champion this form factor/model variant. Nowadays, I use them for streaming, although they have been used to film various corporate projects with no hesitation. Realistically, the mark 1 is still great, warts and all. If I was being asked to recommend a camera to someone I wouldn't hesitate in mentioning this for most users, as most people over imagine their use of cameras.
Glad I switched my main cam to the A6700 back in December. It’s worth the extra $400, and at the same time you get a better hybrid camera with the A6700. And as much as I’ve seen things about that camera overheating, I’ve never actually been able to get it to overheat. The A6700 is a better buy.
I filmed a guy doing glass blowing in a room full of insanely hot furnaces with my a6700. It took about 30 minutes of on and off before it overheated, and then only needed maybe 5 minutes (10 max, but I don't think it went that long) of cool down before I was able to use it again.
the wisdom imparted in the final thoughts. it should be a staple of every reviewer and consumer. The endless discussions we have outside of that, produce nothing but a waste of time. Respect.
I'm so glad you still do these reviews in this style. While I appreciate your other video content I was really worried this format was going away. I know it's a lot of work, but we sure love it.
For stabilisation it can be used with a gimbal and for overheating during long recording it can be used with a fan which definitely won't cost the £800 difference between zve10 ii and fx30
I own the original ZV-E10, and it's still a solid camera that I have used to film hours upon hours of A roll, B roll, and behind the scenes content for my college course (film student). I also have it plugged into a camlink and mounted on my desk when I'm on discord calls, outputting 4K25 S-Log2 for hours on end, in a room that depending on the time of year and how long my PC's been running can vary from 17C to 27C. Not once has this thing ever overheated in its almost 2 years of continuous use. I've also got an FX30, not used as much cause I got it later on, but when I have used it, admittedly not in massively taxing conditions yet, the cooling system worked, and that camera has not overheated for me either. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the ZV-E10 II is a disappointment.
Thanks a lot for the extended overheating review. Would be great if you could come up with a chart comparing different camera systems according to sensor size that you have tested over the years :D
Since being under the sun has such a huge impact on overheating and recording times, I'm wondering if the white colored version will perform better! It would be great if you could do all the same testing with both versions and see if the results vary. Thanks.
so its a "worse 6700" Sony: Lets put a 2h battery on it. - Overheats in 11 min. Remember that the overheating times is with the camera on. if you start /stop recording and just record 10 sec clips, but the camera stays on between, it will still overheat in those 15-60min.
Love the detailed review as always Gerald. In my opinion: the fact that it has No mechanical shutter, No IBIS and it is +$400, the A6700 is a better buy for this price range ($1000-$1500) I think the Mark I version for $600 is still a better choice for someone who is looking for a budget hybrid camera (for photos and vlogging) and if you need quality slow motion, save and get the A6700.
It's actually in the shipping (should be here in few hours). Turned out here in Poland it's $1050 (no VAT), so not that bad. And if it won't overheat in "the studio" I might buy second one. Sure I would prefer FX6, but budget is the main limiting factor :D Let's see if it looks professional enough with matte box :D
would be interested in the overheating comparison with the a6700 as mine overheats in a 25C indoor (4K/24) setup in just 35-40 minutes (with USB-power attached, battery door opened). I have to use the ulanzi cooler attached to it to have an unlimited runtime. It looks like this ZV-E10II does better.
Thanks for the thorough review for the overheating test! This mark II cuts the IBIS, the heat dissipation in exchanging the extreme lightweight body, which is ridiculous. Without effective IBIS, the gimbal contributes a significant in weight, defeat the purposes of holistic lightweight 😅
Wish you would have done 1080p overheating tests comparing HDMI and USB. The notoriously fragile/loose HDMI connector from Gen 1 era (ZV and A6XXX) has caused plenty headaches. But if there are no overheating issues at 1080p/60, then this is the perfect camera upgrade for streamers (most platforms only go up to 1080p)
This looks like a great feature set and the image looked good, but the handheld clips not so. As a vlogging camera I'd expect that to be buttery smooth. Thanks for the excellent review, especially the overheating breakdown.
Just saw another youtuber's video and they had no overheating issues. Makes me wonder if there's a drastic variability between models. Definitely feels like one will need an aftermarket fan for the zve10 ii though.
The first version was like one of the worst cameras Sony ever made. All the reviews footage I saw from it was Jello'd out of control and it looked horrible. This thing is actually usable as long as you don't need to record for more than an hour at a time.
idk how fast this sensor is but pretty sure its not fast enough to be a 100% replacement of mechanical shutter. also you cant expect ibis on an entry level APS-C camera but i agree that there shouldn’t be a price jump. its still gonna sell like hot cakes cause there is a blind following of sony by the youtubers.
Hm. This is the first zve10 ii review that says it overheats. Other reviewers said it lasted 3+ hours until they got bored and quite. Never overheated. Hmmm. It very rarely hits as low as 88° here. Sounds like the camera was not designed for outdoor use? We got as cold as 103° at 2:00am a few days ago. I appreciate the more honest review with a fair comparison. I think I'll hold onto my ZV-E10 for a while longer (it's barely a month old).
Hi Gerald, can you heat test cameras using dummy batteries to keep the battery heat away from the camera? There are dummy batteries available for just about any camera, so this is a legitimate way for any camera to extend recording times before overheating.
Overheating can be solved via the dummy (or firmware I guess), so no biggie for me as I rig my current ZV-1 mk1 anyway. For the price tho it's an insane upgrade and great offering that will help me with my content tremendously (my current A7 III is too bulky and not as feature-rich in video). Good job, Sony. And thank you for finding out quirks with this camera, Gerald!
so turn a small camera into a big camera with external power, great! also, would still have to prove that the dummy battery actually solved the problem. for pro shoots, overheating is 100% no no and would never risk the embarrassment.
I am considering purchasing this ZV-E10 M2 camera and would like to know if it is suitable for still photography or just good for video only? Thank you 🙏 so much
interestingly, when you know exactly your use case - I would argue that you are using the equipment professionally and thus you can spend more (unless you have to buy, say, 10 or 100 of these cameras and then every penny counts). Otherwise, if you are just using your camera for fun - it is no fun when it stops working. I'm shooting k-pop cover dance performances, they are usually (99%) are done in public and about 50% happen at 2-4 PM My a7 iv stopped working after second take (it was +31C I think) at 4k60p, had to switch to 30p Not sure what I wanted to say, but I'd say I really respect Gerald for being so thorough. I've seen other reviews and yes, at 23C it runs forever, but come on, billions of people live in places where 21C is considered cold, lol
Thanks Gerald. Quick question, I recorded video on a ZV E1, but FCP couldn't recognize the video. I have to go back and see if it was a H.265 codec, I'm finding the Sony operating/file system a lot more challenging than Canon. Off hand, can't remember if you are an Adobe guy, so maybe you haven't run into this issue.
Did you by chance test how this would work as a webcam in terms of overheating Gerald? Ie: usb power, no recording and output either through usb or HDMI in 1080 and 4k?
Nice Gerald, always trusting your insights, especially around the ZV-E10 ;) Can you confirm the Sony ZV-E10II has the function auto ISO/Min SS? The original ZV-E10 didn't have this for some reason. Thanks!
Now that there are some used units, I saw one at B&H for 899 with a kit lens. I’m looking at this as a B cam for my FX30. The cheapest S Log 3 10 bit Sony camera with the same battery is doing it for me.
Awesome video and charts. You put so much work into this. I'm just surprised at how extremely bad the picture quality looked in the short test. I know it's shut on a mediocre kit lens - but still... looks way worse than a modern smartphone.
Thank you, great review into the overheating issues. I might just get the A7iv, it's full frame, it has an EVF, it has IBIS, it has dual memory card slots and I believe the overheating issue is less of a problem, all for $500 more.
For my uses, the overheating tests are not an issue. If you shoot interviews, live stream, or talk for really long times, then the ZV-E10ii may not be for you. But, for the narrative work - and occasional TH-cam video - that I do, I don't see overheating being a problem that I would have to deal with. I already have the FX30, so the ZV-E10ii might be a decent B-cam. Although, to be honest, I am considering switching systems at this time. I came for the review. Stayed for the vortex ending. Thank you!!
Dear Gerald Undone, I appreciate your insightful reviews and deep understanding of camera technology. As a passionate videographer, I’m hoping you could advocate for a push from camera manufacturers to advance their stabilization technology beyond the benchmarks set in 2017. For instance, while the Sony ZV-E10 Mark II offers improved electronic stabilization, it still falls short compared to the in-body image stabilization (IBIS) found in models like the Panasonic GH5 from that era. The current electronic stabilization can be roughly 60-70% less effective than IBIS, which is noticeable in dynamic shooting conditions. As an influential figure in the camera community, you have the ability to persuade not only consumers but also the camera companies to push their hardware and technology further. It would be fantastic to see future cameras integrate more advanced stabilization technologies that significantly surpass the capabilities of those from 2017. Thank you for considering this request and for your continued contributions to the field. Best regards, Pup
I REALLY appreciate the overheating tests. Example: we are currently looking for a camera for our youth group and we are in Texas shooting summer camp. Our direct sunlight is going to be 100F and above in very normal circumstances. Seeing an 11 minute time frame between 70-80F just tells me this thing will cook like an egg in our world 😂 I often see people state “but you won’t see that in normal temperatures” but if you live basically anywhere in the south or along the equator normal temperatures are like an oven. So docs, outdoor weddings, camps, you name it, it’s a daily occurrence to film outside in the summer for some of us. Thanks for including overheating info because for us it’s one of the most critical parts of the camera. Fans create issues as well because of dust and rain, here in TX weather can go from flood to hot summer day in the same day. Literally just had it happen with the hurricane
No mechanical ibis, big crops. I know, intended market but intended market would like to shoot well stabilised footage at 60fps without a 50% crop. You might as well buy the excellent Nikon Z30 and save 40%. Or save up and get the superlative ZVE1 or if you can’t afford that really try to save $400 as others say and get the MUCH better A6700. I feel Sony went behind with this camera. As stated, the Nikon Z30 I’d rather have, and suspect the new Nikon and Canon cameras in the line will really blow this away.
A cheap and easy overheating fix for livestreaming: direct a USB powered "blower" style fan (AC Infinity brand, I think) at the back of the camera body. I can livestream indefinitely on my Gen 1 ZV-E10 at 4K through a Camlink. I would bet money those results would hold for Gen 2.
I’m glad they switched to the larger batteries and gave it much better rolling shutter performance. Honestly though, I’d really just prefer an iPhone 15 over this and save for better mirrorless. Great video as always!
Hi Gerald, could you see if the new fans from smallrig or ulanzi are a viable solution to the overheating problem in the next test where overheating is a problem? Would be interesting to know if this is working.
With the a6500 I noticed the overheating only happens with picture profiles turned on. Fun fact what I used to do is put one of those cooling gel pads on it to get through a wedding ceremony 😅
Hi Mark, this is a great review, Definitely gonna order it. I have a question though. Which Picture Profile would you recommend is the best suited for this camera (as well as ZV-E10 Mark I)? I've been shooting in HLG3 & 2 with the old one....
EV10 mark I is the camera that my workplace use, and while we only shoot 1080p30 on it, the fw50 still drains pretty quickly, we got at most 1 Hour 15 minutes of continues recording. it's nice to see the Mark II uses the bigger and better battery! :D can't wait for E10 mark I to get a huge discount so i can finally buy it for my personal camera LOL
Thank you for this review. This is probably a dumb question (and maybe I missed you mentioning it), but did you do any tests on just the camera operation without recording? Looking at these for secondary cameras for a streaming environment. Is it just in the recording where these cameras are overheating?
For the difference in money you can get a clip on fan for $60, a Viltrox 27mm f1.2 and a rode wireless mic That's a full 2 lens no overheating setup for the same cost as just the body of the fx30.
Thanks for this. It sounds like an ideal camera for me: I am always working indoors for video (I might also take this camera on holiday, frankly, it looks handy for that, but won't be shooting video clips longer than a minute or two) and really fancy a camera that is small and light, gets a good runtime off the battery, and - obviously - turns in good image performance. I seldom record anything longer than 10 minutes in one shot so in my worst-case scenario can't see overheating being an issue. Horses for courses and all that.
I am considering this as an upgrade on my 12y/o Canon SL1 for street photography and sort videos.I was hoping canon would rev the R10 but that doesn't look to be on the menu for this year. My primary camera is now my phone (I expect this to continue with the iPhone 16) since an iPhone is somewhat more stealthy in crowd environments. Having this as a secondary when I need some flexibility in lens choice or need to use an ND filter this is a goto choice.
The overheating is disappointing to hear. I've got a first generation E10 and have recorded outdoors numerous times at 4k24 with it connected to a power adapter and it records until the SD card is full (about 4 hours or so) without any issues and it's typically 85~90*F outside.
A dummy battery solved my overheating issues on my a6700 at 4k 30 over USB. I wonder if I'd help here too (for streamers). Or a camera cooling fan if portability is desired.
Its crazy how the a6400 and a6600 can do 4k 30fps and not overheat or last way longer than the new cameras. But the new cameras has better NR, DR and more bells and whistles
It’s such a great cam, you get FX30 image for a price of 1000€… awesome! I’m gonna buy it for sure, don’t want the EVF, I’m not a photographer! Ibis is sad, but I use gimbal anyway for smooth image, 10 bit is great and the new screen. Great upgrade from last version which I own aswell, well 3 of them even :p
Thank you for the great video. The overheating tests are very helpful! the ZVE10 II won't work for me in summer as I stream for at least 90min. I guess I will just upgrade to the FX30. Thank you!
Right now. A used A6700 costs 200-300 more than the launch price of this one and gives you mechanical shutter, mechanical is, evf, a weather sealed body and twice the framerates. It’s neat, no doubt, but it doesn’t beat the 6700 for value imo. Especially as you can get deals or buy used.
So it's $998 in US, so will be ~1200€ in EU. Looks like this would be my b-cam for studio. Have to watch other reviews, cause someone forgot to mention stabilization modes :P

Thanks!
Apparently they launched it at 1850 AUD in Australia. Now down a smidge but still a price that makes no sense compared to the 1000 USD in the US.
Hands Down - thee best reviewer. 👍😎
This feels like a good intro to Sony camera system. The last camera I bought was the Canon 6D. Mark 1.
Thank you!!
Exactly my thoughts, I'm almost never rolling for longer than like 3 minutes
Dear Gerald Undone,
I appreciate your insightful reviews and deep understanding of camera technology.
Best regards,
Pup
I REALLY appreciate the overheating tests. Example: we are currently looking for a camera for our youth group and we are in Texas shooting summer camp. Our direct sunlight is going to be 100F and above in very normal circumstances. Seeing an 11 minute time frame between 70-80F just tells me this thing will cook like an egg in our world 😂
I often see people state “but you won’t see that in normal temperatures” but if you live basically anywhere in the south or along the equator normal temperatures are like an oven.
Well your problem isn’t the camera it’s Texas!
@@2424rocket 😂 some problems are worth having
FX30 is your only option.
Is the overheating table testing 4:2:2 10-bit mode? Can you get similar results to mk1 if you use 4:2:0 8-bit in warmer envs?
I like seeing you're back in the workshop environment. Nice!
Interesting camera. I feel like they could have wow'd us a bit more and then blew us away with the ZV-e1 mk2 launch in a few months.
Personally I don't see any issue with the 4k24 times. The issue is the 4k60 recording times. They seem a bit low.
Hi Mark, this is a great review, Definitely gonna order it. I have a question though. Which Picture Profile would you recommend is the best suited for this camera (as well as ZV-E10 Mark I)? I've been shooting in HLG3 & 2 with the old one....
Who is Mark?
i was just looking at the original zv-e10 as a downscale for me so i can focus more on myself, and with the e10II it might be the right one
EV10 mark I is the camera that my workplace use, and while we only shoot 1080p30 on it, the fw50 still drains pretty quickly, we got at most 1 Hour 15 minutes of continues recording. it's nice to see the Mark II uses the bigger and better battery! :D
can't wait for E10 mark I to get a huge discount so i can finally buy it for my personal camera LOL
So if you want better overheat times maybe buy the white one?
Thanks for the video! helped a lot!
How's the ZV-E10ii vs iPhone 15 Pro? considering upgrade now to a real camera for youtube videos.
Great moment to grab a cheap ZV-E10!
Great video Gerald! I still love the OG intro ... lets keep it ;)
Thank you for this review. This is probably a dumb question (and maybe I missed you mentioning it), but did you do any tests on just the camera operation without recording? Looking at these for secondary cameras for a streaming environment. Is it just in the recording where these cameras are overheating?
This makes the Sony A6700 more attractive to be honest..
For the difference in money you can get a clip on fan for $60, a Viltrox 27mm f1.2 and a rode wireless mic
That's a full 2 lens no overheating setup for the same cost as just the body of the fx30.
The fan requires power for long use time and isnt a viable solution for long term use .
Also introduces micro noise
Can you keep it charged with a power bank? For indoor stuff I always do that for the FX30, it saves me from having to buy a bunch of batteries.
Can anyone confirm it has dual base ISO as FX30? Internet has mixed info about that :D
Were all those “overheating while streaming” tests using the HDMI output, or the USB?
I am considering this as an upgrade on my 12y/o Canon SL1 for street photography and sort videos.I was hoping canon would rev the R10 but that doesn't look to be on the menu for this year. My primary camera is now my phone (I expect this to continue with the iPhone 16) since an iPhone is somewhat more stealthy in crowd environments. Having this as a secondary when I need some flexibility in lens choice or need to use an ND filter this is a goto choice.
I wonder how much better the white version handles the sunlight cases?
Instead of that table for the overheating stuff how about a scatter plot ?
The chances of me looking at this camera and you reviewing this 24 hours ago is insane
The overheating is disappointing to hear. I've got a first generation E10 and have recorded outdoors numerous times at 4k24 with it connected to a power adapter and it records until the SD card is full (about 4 hours or so) without any issues and it's typically 85~90*F outside.
Well, with this camera with “exceptional value” you will be able to record up to 11 minutes at 4K60…such a JOKE…
A dummy battery solved my overheating issues on my a6700 at 4k 30 over USB. I wonder if I'd help here too (for streamers). Or a camera cooling fan if portability is desired.
overheat with opened or closed screen?
Did you conduct your test in 8bit or 10bit video recording? Would be of great help if you could clarify that.
Nice review, but another product popped into my mind: DJI pocket 3
For social media where most videos are within the 1 minute mark, this camera is unbeatable.
Great video 😎 can the ZV-E10 II accepts external timecode ?
Thank you for the great video. The overheating tests are very helpful! the ZVE10 II won't work for me in summer as I stream for at least 90min. I guess I will just upgrade to the FX30. Thank you!
The biggest issue people had was overheating. It still overheats. I’ll wait for MKIII lol 😂
Facts
And don't forget that the Sony a6700 has the same dynamic range as a Sony A7R V in crop crop mode
I bought a6700 used for $1075 last year. It'd be even cheaper now.
@frankfeng2701 It jumps up and down on ebay. Funny thing I paid that same price for my a6400 4 years ago. Still uses it too
I just don't think I can adjust to the ergonomics of such a small camera....
Important question, this camera or a6700 and why ? Pls answer 🙏🏻
6700
Great overview! Thanks for going into such detail.
So it's $998 in US, so will be ~1200€ in EU. Looks like this would be my b-cam for studio.
Have to watch other reviews, cause someone forgot to mention stabilization modes :P
