  • Never heard of a "Bobby Handmade Nib"? Then you will want to check it out. It is a great writing pen, inexpensive, and a welcome addition to your fountain pen collection/stash/hoard/accumulation.
    You can find the pen and the "Bobby Nibs" to swap here: ebay.us/hw0Ia5

    Thanks for the reference. I gifted one of my Bobby Nib 51a's to a local pastor, a lefty who uses fountain pens. The nib works well for him. My original has always been inked & used & brings a smile to my face each time. Glad you like yours.

      I just got my 51a. The Bobby nib came separately. Exchanging the nibs was surprisingly easy. I did test the nib and it is a smooth writer. I usually turn the nib while writing and noticed the nib has a sweet spot. I will have to adjust how I hold this pen.

    I agree the nib is exceptional. I have the same pen you demonstrated, and like way the cap goes with silver-black body.

    The Blue/Red Jinhao 51a is a "Dreamland" 51a. Bobby is selling them with his nib on Etsy. I bought one for the sum of $8.50. :-)

    Great review. I ordered one in the blue green. Should not of done that but for the price it is looks terrific.
    Speaking of Birmingham Pens, you are correct Nick is developing his own inks in house. Can't wait to to see the great colors. I myself like his Bloomfield Fire Engine Red, Andy Warhol Purple ,Rodman Gun Gunpowder Tea and Allegheny Arsenal Gunpowder Black.

    I remember the view of my mother towards neologisms: they are last ditch words for the inarticulate. Arguably correct, but if you don't speak Street you won't be heard or understood. "Cool" forever. Those Bobby nibs are very cool in fact and I am happy to see that classic writing is still a viable market so we can expect more good things.

    I bought one of these after watching Chrisrap52’s review. I agree, it’s a very nice writer, never lets me down. I also have a dark purple ink, a mix of Waterman Tender Purple and Intense Black, that way I can make it just the way I want it. I also like to use Krishna Sea and Storm as a another very pretty dark purple.

    It's still up so I got one! I have had problems with some Jinhao in the past where they would have pretty significant leakage after cracking near the nib... I'm thinking this type of pen will not do that.

    One might think that showing a side-by-side comparison of the stock & Bobby's nibs, and their outputs, would've been in order.

    You can buy the handmade nib separately and take out the nib from parker 51 clones and put the hobby nib in. As long as it is a 18.5 mm compatible pen. Hero 616 works as well as the wing sung 601 and 618 I believe

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I knew it fit the 618, but I hadn't thought about the Hero 616.

    I can't find that ink but Diamine do one called Imperial Purple, so I've just ordered a bottle. I've raved before about the 51A and have finally been able to buy the 51A with a Bobby nib on eBay. Like lighting I bought one each of five different acrylic styles. It will be interesting to feel if this improves on what is already one of my favourite pens at any price point.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Diamine Imperial Purple is a nice purple. I just got through washing it out of a Kaweco Sport that accidentally ended up in the washing machine...oops!

      @@JG3Reviews eek! Well, the other night I cleverly upended a full pen of Lamy Turquoise all over my stupid self by screwing up with a WS 699 vac filler. Top tip: when going to unscrew the blind cap to release ink into the section, unscrew only the cap and not the whole plunger assembly. At least now I can audition to become a member of Blue Man Group....

      @@JG3Reviews The mighty haul of Bobby-nib 51As arrived yesterday, as well as a bottle of Diamine Imperial Purple. I quickly managed to confirm these play very well together. The stock nib on even the cheapest transparent 51As glide like silk, but that slightly upturned Bobby nib glides like rocket powered silk on an ice rink with oil instead of blades. In zero gravity. In a graphite bath. "Smooth" doesn't even come close. Gorgeous thing.

    51As are certainly great value pens and those acrylics look great but unfortunately I am not a fan of the soft friction cap and how it doesn't join flush to the body and I don't really like hooded nibs much either. The nib here looks very similar to the stock one on my PenBBS pen but my pen doesn't get line variation but it does seem to be quite particular about what angle I hold it at and what direction I write from.

    • @manuelsalazar3938
      @manuelsalazar3938 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The version with M nib is not hooded, it has a #5 "normal" nib, I just bought mine from AliExpress. Unfortunately, Jinhao lowered the quality of the pens, now they are full plastic except for the nib and the cap, the previous version had metal threads and a metal ring where the body meets the barrel, shame on Jinhao...

    Can you give tips on how to switch out this pen nibs? I have a bobby nib but the hooded area ... I cannot get it open. Please send help >.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You pull only the nib out, the section is glued. I used needle nosed pliers with a piece of rubber ribbon the keep from damaging the nib and pulled it straight out.

    • @yappytown
      @yappytown ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JG3Reviews I was actually able to open it and replace. There was a teeeny bit of glue but cleaned it all up and I love how it writes! Just really enjoy all my 51s and 51a’s :) thankyou so much for the input though. At this point may not switch another out heh.

      You may have already tried this, but +90% of the time for me, removing the ink and flushing the pen clean fixes it. Sometimes it's dried ink, or a bit of manufacturing debris, etc. Here is good info. www.penchalet.com/pen_faq/why_fountain_pens_skip.html
      Good luck!

    I just ordered this pen. The Bobby nib is coming separately. Hopefully I don't destroy the nib, replacing the original.
    It looks like a beautiful pen. Do you still use it?

      I do, yes. I like to keep Lexington Gray in this one, which I think the nib is well-suited for.
