Swapping the Nib on a Jinhao 51A: Non-hooded Version

  • I recently reviewed the non-hooded version of the Jinhao 51a. A viewer requested a video showing how to swap out the nib on this pen. This is a standard #5 size nib and I show how easy it is to remove the Jinhao nib and replace it with a generic, or in this case, a Delike #5 nib from a Delike New Moon 3. The Jinhao 992 has an identical nib to this one and I've found that the nibs for the Moonman M2 also fit perfectly.

    The Jinhao 51a is probably the pen with the highest quality to price ratio.

    Loved this video. I have a few pens that give me fits and swapping out the nibs might be the solution to their problems. Thank you Doug!

      @@MrAndrew1953 All of the standard Penbbs fine nibs are mini-fude or Waverly. Some vintage Sheaffer nibs are Waverly and Pilot has a custom Waverly nib that was or is available. Here is an article on the nib style vintagepensblog.blogspot.com/2013/11/what-is-waverley-nib.html

    I'd like to put a stub nib on this pen, but I just don't know where to look. I thought of Goulet, but don't really want to order from the US, I'm in the UK.

      Take a look for some #5 size stub nibs from Bobby on Etsy (ChinesePen) and on eBay (office_supplies_pen).

    Huh ... Just got my 51A in Ebony today. I didn't know there was a collar that unscrewed from the grip.. Thought it was the same as my Number 6 nib X450's.
    I hope I didn't need to wash the inside of the collar, like the feed and nib to get rid of any oil or manufacturing crud that may have beed present.
    Question: Do the Zebra G Flex Nibs need to be resized to fit on a Number 5 feed? I know they do to fit a Number 6 feed.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A #6 size nib will only fit a #6 size feed.

    • @stevehuffman7453
      @stevehuffman7453 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@InkquiringMinds That's not what I asked.
      No matter. I guess I'll find out when I get some G nibs to fit to my Jinhao X450's if they need fitted to the 51A's number 5 feed.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stevehuffman7453 Sorry if I was unclear. The Zebra G nibs are dip pen nibs and are roughly #6 size. You can adjust them to fit some #6 size feeds; like on the Jinhao x450. I sincerely doubt you could fit a Zebra G dip pen nib on a Jinhao 51A open-style nibbed fountain pen.

    Hello doug. Kindly suggest me a nib upgade for my jinhao x450/750. Recieved them today. Didnt liked the M nib on them. Preferably an international seller.I like fine nibs. Thanks.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The x450/x750 will accept almost every #6 size nib there is. I would suggest you try Goulet Pens #6 steel nib (they are made by Jowo). A less expensive option, if you like character in your writing, is to try the Kaigelu Long Blade or Long Knife nibs. They are inexpensive and I love the line variation from the architect nib.

    Hey Doug,
    I hope all is well!
    The TWISBI 580 seems promising. But I'd like if you suggest 3 other pens for me to compare ( it's okay for me to get a pen & swap the nip I trust your knowledge )
    Much appreciated!

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, Mitch. If it is a demonstrator, piston filler you are looking for to compare with the TWSBI 580, I'd recommend you look at the Penbbs 309. They are around $30 on Etsy, but you can get them quicker in the US (and pay a bit more for them) at Goldspot Pens. Another terrific pen which is now available as a piston filler as well as a vacuum filler is the Wing Sung 699 (look at esybuy on Etsy for Wing Sung 699 piston filler). There is also the Wing Sung 3008 but it is a super-cheap and flimsy version of the 580. Even though they are only a couple of bucks I don't think they are worth it. Another piston filler people seem to like is the Wing Sung 698. It has a smaller #5 nib which is spotty quality. The Wing Sung 699 is a much better bang for your buck IMO.
