    The exact Chinese wording is “大道" meaning principal, The word came from a sentence of Laozi Tao Te Ching “大道至簡", It told us the reason or principal of being simple and minimalistic in life. That’s why the pen look and design become.

      I don't know Chinese, but from reading the kanji, I arrive at the following meaning: "The great road 大道 (of/is) simplicity 至簡. Maybe we could render it as "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" - a quote attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.

      @aumshanti2514 it's got holes in the end. You could seal it with a drop of hot glue, and the thing would probably hold 10-15ml say. But I haven't tried yet. Luckily, I didn't start with ink, I filled it with water, and it slowly drains out the end.

    If you look at the name of the pen in sinograms, "大道" (dà dào) means "avenue" (see also "The road to a better future").
    It would appear to be dà dāo which corresponds to the blade.
    Chinese has a huge number of words that are pronounced in almost the same way, so relying solely on the transliteration is not enough to get a correct translation.

    When I test a pen or ink, I usually write quotes from famous people, Edgar Allan Poe is my favorite one. One of her best quotes is “Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.” I have a notebook just for this. Great review, I usually order one medium and one fine, times two, why times two? One for me, one for my wife so she stays away from my pen collection 😂😂😂

    I have looked the term "dadao" and asked my East Asian history professor. It seems that it is used in two ways (not unusual). It can be a reference to the "the Great Way" of Eastern philosophy. Or, it can refer to a "big sword." I think that it's a combination of both uses. Daoism (pronounced taoism) is a major (big) philosophy in East Asia, and literally, dàdāo translates to "big dao" with "dao" meaning sword. And there is no mistake about it, the Jinhao 9019 is a major/big sword/philosophy...the pen is mightier than the sword! 😃

    Hi James! Thanks for this nice review. The correct meaning for "Dadao" is "main street", "big road" or "broad road". For this reason, the term "Avenue" was used in the first review post from East Asia on a well-known American fountain pen website. I also have confirmation from contacts specialized in fountain pens in China. The name of the fountain pen is not Jinhao 9019 but Jinhao DADAO nr. 9019 as exactly engraved on the cap ring. I understand that it is the first time that Jinhao uses a word to name one of its models. All denominations have a precise meaning, nothing is random. For this denomination it is possible to find a mysterious link to the X159, as I had already pointed out to Chris, the first western reviewer of the fountain pen. If you take the translucent model you can appreciate the stabilizing lugs in the body for the converter, which I think is the first to be screwed into fountain pens. We are facing a new and surprising engineering in the world of fountain pens!

  • @mikewhitmer5108
    @mikewhitmer5108 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I was hoping it was going to be better than the x159. Maybe it's I haven't used it as much, but I like the feel of the x159 better. I really like the 9019 huge ink capacity, and I may get used to it as I work with it. I like it and would recommend it as one of the better Jinhao offerings.
    UPDATE: on 2nd thought, I'm finding it much smoother than the x159. And the fine nib is really a fine. I still like the 159, but I think I may end off using the 9019. And the huge converter is VERY NICE!!

"Beautiful, liberty, Lighthouse," are my words of choice. Brian Goulet really hates "Community" and I really don't blame him.

    I looked up this model on Taobao, and the stores are all listing it as the 9019 大道 / dàdào, which means avenue or boulevard, i.e., a very wide, multi-lane road in a city, but it could also mean "the great Dao", as in daoism, or the Japanese puppet government in Shanghai during the Sino-Japanese War (I think we can rule out that last one, LOL). The Chinese broadsword would be 大刀 / dàdāo ("big knife"), so it's not that.

    The Dadao is a traditional Chinese sword. A short, chopping weapon, it is designed to be used with both hands. It had a long association with law enforcement and the maintenance of public order, most frequently being seen in the hands of police or militia personnel or indeed official executioners.

    I bought one of these pens for myself for my birthday a month ago, and so far, I love it. It's a little long and fat for carrying in a shirt pocket, but it feels great in my hand, the nib is shockingly smooth and responsive (especially considering I got the XF nib), and it holds a ton of ink. This pen is a fantastic value for the money, and outperforms Cross, Sheaffer, and Parker pens I have that were 5 times the price...

    I'll stick with the X159, which I also ordered with a #8 , which also writes like a or a paintbrush. Dr. Freud would have fun with his sexual symbolisms here with these massive fountain pens. And I thought that the X159 was massive. (Jinhao goes to the next level) This takes me to places I've never been before.

    Pen looks great, love the form factor (enjoyed the x159 too) - my problem and disappointment is that these pens require 2 to 2.5 turns to uncap. I use my pens mostly for quick note taking which makes these pens very cumbersome to use. I'm hoping that eventually they will get them down to 1 turn (TWSBI ECO manages with 3/4 turns).

    I have been hesitating about whether to buy this pen. I find the original Jinhao 159 big and heavy. I find the Jinhao X159 just big. The 9019 seems to be even larger still. Although I have biggish hands I tend to prefer something a bit smaller than those "Jumbo" pens. That said, I don't want to miss out on a good new pen and since the 9019 is inexpensive maybe I should try one. The new converter is the highlight of this design, in my opinion, though it would be nice if Jinhao started making piston filler pens in the future. My X159 has a Fine nib. I really would like to try that no.8 medium nib.

    I am fairly certain it refers to a type of sword, the name Dadao.
    That aside, I just received mine which is the clear demonstrator. I can tell you it is wider than the Wing Sung 630 and by association the Montblanc 149. It may be millimeter shorter than both.
    The converter is something to behold. I think it has the capacity of 1.7 ml which is about 3X the capacity of the regular Jinhao converter. I almost think the pen's dimensions may be to accommodate the converter. I think the length of the turning knob may be to accept a longer shaft for the increased capacity.
    I have yet to ink mine but am looking forward to using it.
    If this has come out earlier, I probably would not have Frankenpen an X159 into an eyedropper. I think you could eyedropper this pen, but why would you?
    I think the pen would accept Parker and Lamy cartridges.
    Great review James.

      @JG3Reviews thanks so much- that's wonderful. I might have to pick one of these up. I hate refilling pens, and the large grip of the x159 I find leads to a very relaxed grip

      @@JG3Reviews just picked one up in F and filled it with Robert Oster Red candy. Might swap the nib to M like my x159 - should be wetter. What great pens!

    Mine required quite a bit of fine tuning the nib and the feed. The nib is a stiff nail despite its larger #8 size. The plastic feels like... cheap plastic, unlike those better quality, thicker plastics with a tad of resilience and plasticity to prevent sudden cracking once you accidentaly drop it... but you get what you pay, so you have to manage the expectation here. Despite the cartridge being a screw type, with motion, it hits the barrel producing a rattling sound. As a writing experience, it takes a while to get used to it because of its larger girth, it feels like writing with a child's big, fat crayon.

    I have had some problems with mine and was wondering if any other pen enthusiasts had experienced similar ones. The first thing I noticed was that the part of the converter that one rotates with one's fingers was wobbly enough to make the pen rattle anytime I touched it at all. I didn't have to move it very far or shake it for that to happen. My "fix" for this was to pull off the ridiculous metal cap that was making the converter so top-heavy. The pen no longer rattles even if I shake it, but this is a good solution only for 9019s in solid colours. Some owners of 9019s in transparent colours might not want to do this, because underneath the metal cap is the same flat-sided Lamy-style rotating knob that Jinhao uses on their standard-size bottle converters. The result is that when the larger 9019 converter is completely filled with ink, the threaded centre rod sticks out of the top of the rotating knob, which some people may consider a bad or messy look for a clear demonstrator pen. Of course the rod won't be visible if you fill the converter only 80 - 85% or so. The other thing that bothered me was that both the X159 and the 9019 have caps that allow the nibs and feeds to dry out, especially if I use my favourite Waterman Serenity Blue ink. For both of my X159s, switching to Namiki Blue Fountain Pen Ink -- the kind that comes in curiously shallow 60 ml bottles inside red boxes -- solved this problem completely. Namiki doesn't market this product as an "infinity" ink, but it certainly seems to work that way inside my X159s. I still have a real fight on my hands, however, getting my 9019 to write for the first time each day. The Namiki ink and flushing out factory residues from the feed and section with a rubber bulb-style ear syringe have helped only a little bit.

      I’ve only had mine inked with Monteverde Sapphire (and constantly since the review) without any dry out. The Sapphire is a pretty wet ink, with more ghosting and bleed-through than is typical for their inks. Maybe that’s been beneficial in this pen? I have a Pilot pen that was finicky about dryness with the first few inks, but a bottle of Pilot Blue-Black solved that.

    I have ordered one from China and should receive it by next week. I think this pen won't let me down just like the X159. According to the introduction on shop web, there's a phrase "大道至簡, 悟者天成". I think Dadao is not meaning Big Road nor Big Sword. It is orginated from an ancient Philosopher Laozi. Dadao means the main or fundamental theroy or order. The phrase is more or less means "The very fundamental order or theroy is simplicity. If you know how to use it, you will gain success". The pen is simple with no fancy things nor gold nib. But... if you know how to use it, write with it, you will success (gain your knowledge) and get all the value from it. I hope my translation or interpretation of Dadao is close to what Jinhao's original thinking.

    A dadao is a type of Chinese sword. It's got a single-edged, curved blade, like a falchion or machete, and a handle about as long as the blade, putting it somewhere between a two-handed sword and a polearm. It's a big sword. Beautiful things

    In Chinese, "大刀" (Dàdāo) literally translates to "big knife" or "broadsword." "大" (dà) means "big" or "large," and "刀" (dāo) means "knife" or "sword." The term "Dadao" is often used to refer to a type of Chinese sword or weapon with a wide blade that was historically used by various Chinese military forces.

    • @dannygarden2292
      @dannygarden2292 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It could also be "大道" (dà dào): This translates to "great way" or "great path," often used in the context of philosophical or profound truths. Without the actual Chinese or proper hànyǔ pīnyīn it is unknowable what Jīnháo meant.

    The name of this Jinhao 9019 - 'Dadao' here means 大道 (The Great Dao). It is clearly written in Chinese on the pen box. 'Da' means big, 'dao' means "The Way" as in the 'dao' in Laozi (Lao Tzu)'s famous book the Daodejing (Tao Te Ching). It has only one meaning here, and definitely does not mean 'big knife'. Pronunciation= da as in (rhymes with ) Darwin or darling, 'dao' as in Darwin or darling with an 'o' ending . This Jinhao 9019 is a great pen worthy of the name Dadao. "The great dao of pens"
    .

    You should make some recommendations for pens to use for taking notes at church. Obviously a posting pen is more ideal. Needs to be usable without a solid writing surface. Things like that. You seem like you'd have some experience with that!

      Good idea. At a class at Baylor held in the 1st Baptist sanctuary a couple years ago I took 4-5 pens to see that I liked, and I found the Platinum Procyon to be the surprise of the bunch. Great writer, cartridges for quick refills on the go, and the cap posts well and comes off in a quick turn.

    Nice review as always.
    Any reliability issues? There are some opinions that the stiff clip could cause stress cracks and break the cap.
    Have you had a chance to compare with ASA Pens (you got Beena from him) Demonstrator or any large ebonite pens?

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't yet compared to ASA Pens, but they should be on my list. I just checked my 9019 a couple days ago for cracking and so far, so good. It's funny you bring that up, because I was getting out of a case and the resistance of the clip is what made me check.

    Hi which one do you enjoyed more between this 9019 or lamy safari?

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      That might depend on the day you ask me. 😆 If I had only one, it would probably be the AL-Star over the plastic Safari (or a Vista, maybe?). But Safari vs 9019 is close, I really like the 9019 I have. The Safari might-might-win by a hair, and that’s down to more practical size and long-term proven durability. Not that I have issues with the Jinhao, it’s just that it’s new and so that’s an unknown.

    Would it be better to buy a pilot metropolitan for 2 dollars more?

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'd say that comes down to these:
      Do you prefer metal or plastic? The Pilot's metal will be more durable. If you're rough on pens, go Pilot.
      Do you prefer thin or thick grips? There's quite a difference there with these two pens, in fact, they are kind of at the two opposite extremes.
      Do you want more ink capacity? The Jinhao is the clear winner in this regard. The Metro's converter is a squeeze type with much less capacity.
      Do you use international cartridges? The Pilot's are proprietary with fewer color choices.

    Da-dao = Big Tao (as in Taoism). It should not be interpreted as big road, as it literally means. It's The Way. Some comments stated that it leads to the future, No. The Way is a state of mind, time has nothing to do with it. It has nothing to do with sword either, although some people like to grind it down to a look-alike Sailor naginata togi nib.
