Excellent video. I have never seen anyone else completely disassemble the 51A. This is great for us tinkerers. I love how all the Jinhao nibs write--I use each for different purposes.

Thank you, Chris. A very interesting video. I have grown to like hooded nibs more and more. Mainly because they don't dry up so quickly. The Jinhao 51a is one of my favourite low cost pens. Always reliable.

I didn't think I would, but I'm also growing to appreciate hooded nibs more. Due in no small part to the 51A and Parkers. The two attributes I see quoted the most frequently are less nib drying out, and ability to write faster. The tradeoff is less flex and line variation. When I want a pen to just grab and go, I don't need line variation so the 51A has been my cheap pen of choice. Sometimes I just need a pen that is able to do the pen thing, and the 51A is top of its class for me.

It is not a rambling video by any stretch, Chris! Thank you for this. It is VERY informative. I have a Wing Sung 601A with the Triumph style nib on it coming in the next few days. Never having owned a fountain pen of this style, your videos teach me a lot before I get my hands on them. I can't say enough about these Bobby "mini fude" nibs. I have now swapped out the nibs on my Moonman C1, M600, M600S (2 of them) and my Lingmo Lorelei 019 with the Bobby mini-fude nibs and they are all wonderful. Excellent video.

As far as I am concerned, you can ramble as much as you like; because there is a lot of information and knowledge amongst the ramble. Bit over a year ago you made a video on these pens, at the same time I purchased 4 bents nibs and swapped a couple with my Wing Sung 601 ABS body and Jinhao 51A wooden. So I do have an insight knowledge ONLY about nib swapping, and is now inspired to do the full strip after watching this video; all thanks to you Chris. They were and still are fantastic writing implements. Keep up the good work Chris.

I just received a Wing Sung 6100, and it is the first hooded nib pen I have. I also have a Jinhao 51A that might be arriving this next week, so, once again, an extremely timely video for me, as it randomly popped up in my feed just as I started getting curious about how they could come apart for cleaning. Thanks!

I had such a hard time getting the acrylic 51a's metal piece to unscrew. Boiling water, hair dryer, rubber grips, nothing. Eventually thought "This pen is not worth this much time and effort." After, on a whim I tried to unscrew it with a rubber glove and it came off. Odd. Very happy to hear that Bobby's 601 nibs work on these, as I have some coming. Thanks!

Last night, I took my courage in both hands and soaked the entire sections of two Jinhao 86s in boiling water, the immediately twisted the sections away from the barrels. It worked perfectly, and the plastic was undamaged. To do it, I used a rubber grip on the section and had a thick rubber gardening glove on the other hand. I had to push the nib down on a hard surface to get the nib and feed assembly out, but that went well too.Unfortunately, the next stage in my endeavour was a disaster: These nibs are simply too soft to easily shim-widen the gaps without splaying the tines. A less cack-handed touch may be more successful for others.
Chris: Would you happen to have a direct link for Boby replacement nibs?

Thank you Chris . I have a number of 51A's I prefer the standard nib personally but i do have some hooded examples. Mine have all written flawlessly so far and I've been very impressed . I mostly have the acrylics with one wood finish and also one in a smoke clearish resin . Very interesting to see them taken apart especially the 601 which is as you said a direct clone really of the Parker 51 feed system with the collector ,although I think possibly slightly smaller size collectors on the Parker 51 from memory , please do correct me . I have taken the 601 apart and it is tricky to realign the nib , i didn't have the foresight of using scotch tape , which is a great idea and so after many attempts finally got it back aligned , i've not taken the vacuumatic system out , I am wondering do you use talc to put them back in or do they go in easily enough without ?
I agree on the pump filler it's much , much better than the vacuumatic system.
Great Video Chris, very much appreciate all the work you do to make these videos to educate people regarding these pens. Thank you !

Had someone ask if the 51a could be taken apart. I couldn't get mine with a reasonable amount of force but theirs is broke so they may not mind giving it a bit more elbow grease. I was afraid I'd end up borking the nib in the process. Good to know it can be done if you are determined enough.

It seems harder to get Bobby pens here, at least on eBay. I have a couple of Wing Sung 3010 and Jinhao 996 sold as "Bobby Launched". I do wish I had one of those rubberised grip tools that you showed. I've been servicing some of my Parker 17s and 21s. Removing the hood takes quite some effort on those. I think shellac was used to affix them at assembly which would make sense. Maybe the 51A hoods are also held on the threads with shellac?

I got 2 51 a from Bobby and 2 replacement Bobby nibs. WOW the hood is on tight, probably glued like you said. Besides that nifty rubber piece you have, (I have normal rubber grippers) what else might I try to get hood off? Seems odd to sell replacement nibs for a pen with glued on hood. Kinda hoodwinked. Maybe heat would work?

    • @chrisrap52

Maybe warm water, 110. Soak longer. No one answer. Doug & I have put Bobby tubular nibs in many pens. Bobby sells nibs that can fit some pens, you decide how to use them. You can always buy Bobby's 51A with his nib.

Do you have any tips for disassembling the Jinhao 51a? It's hard to get a good grip on the metal part without slipping, or mangling the threads with my pliers. Any help will be very much appreciated!

I tried to get a new transparent plastic nib apart, and failed. Well failed to get it apart without destroying it. The gray threaded part is defiantly glued in I found after getting it apart. Not sure what the glue is but it wouldn't give up. I ended up cracking the outer part in several places. I kinda wish I would have boiled it, just the threads, first to see if that would have helped. Not sure if I want to get another to try boiling water or get one with a metal ring to try or not.

@@chrisrap52 Thank you. The Jinhao and the Wing Sung are two different stories as the section in theJinhao is glued and in the wing Sung it can more easily be unscrewed. In the latter case, this still is not enough, the nib - it appears - has to be "pulled out". The are frustratingly controversial videos out there dealing with this.
