  • Jinhao 51A
The Jinhao 51 A with a hooded steel EF nib. The pen is a standard issue one which will fit into most hands and is fairly pleasurable to write with. The dimensions are more or less ranged around the mean which makes it ideally suited for the mass market: Length:139mm; Diameter:12mm; Net weight:21g.
The Jinhao 51 A has acrylic body and is fitted with a steel cap with a springy, robust clip. The cap can be posted and for those who prefer a bottom-heavy pen, it offers a good option. The cap is push type; while it comes fitted with a regulation Jinhao screw-type converter. It also takes cartridges.
This is one of those pens that costs little and returns a lot more in terms of functionality - a trait that is almost becoming synonymous with Chinese pens in general and Jinhao pens in particular. I must confess, however, that I had bought this pen on a whim, only because it looked pretty attractive and had caught my fancy.
I have been using it for the last couple of days and have no reason to complain. It writes without a skip or a burp, does not dry out when left unused for fairly long spells (I have tried 3 days) and is a decent worker as a daily carry pen. Students and regular users will find it a handy companion.
Chinese pens seem to arouse the most extreme kinds of passion among fountain pen aficionados. While some swear by them, some hate them for all they are worth. The point that needs to be underscored, however, is simple - these are very good pens in the price brackets in which they are offered and are generally competition slayers. It will not be out of place to point out that Jinhao has not created for itself the kind of global reputation for nothing.

I have reviewed 100s of Chinese pens. This one is a good pen. The turned acrylic of the barrel is very desirable, in PenBBS world called Niango. For the cost of 5.00 USD $ this is a very affordable pen that writes well. Chinese nibs are expanding, many have a long blade (knife) calligraphy nib that is very good. Understand your preference for Indian pens. Many great value pens are made in India and a large variety of nibs. We are fortunate to have a great global source of excellent writing instruments.

Chawm. You brought memories of our school days Wing Sung Hero. I still cherish and write with a Wing Sung. Never tried ZinHao. Thanks.

    This is a good pen.
I also have jinhao 86 fountain pen which is very much similar to this pen.
    It performs well.
But as you said sir, I prefer v’sign pens over jinhao (same reason, we are Indian and we prefer Indian).
    Good video sir.
    Keep it up 👍

Thank you for your review of the Jinhao 51A. I have a couple of these pens and enjoy them. One is kept at work and is used most days. I think the person who asked for a pen with a hooded nib would be happy with the Jinhao.

I have a number of Jinhaos. They write buttery smooth. The grip also suits my hand. It's my favourite gift to kids.

Hello sir, I personally want to request you to make 2 videos:
    1. Best notebooks for fountain pens, I see that you're using a sulekha notebook.
2.How to write beautifully with fountain pens, just like you write with them.

@@inkedhappiness Sir, I am not a grain of sand in front of you. Please don't call me 'chief'. Actually, my Jinhao 911 has an identical section. When I bought it, the feed was not aligned properly with the nib. That's why it is not having a good flow, I guess. But the writing is incredibly smooth though. Unfortunately I couldn't align it as there is no tutorial available on TH-cam for opening the section. That's why I've requested you. Thanks for the response sir! It means a lot!

If you want an inexpensive hooded nib, the Jinhao 911 is a good writer, especially for cheap paper. It looks like a Japanese stainless FP from the 1980s too. Good basic pen. I prefer to know more about Indian pens from your videos though.

    Sir
I have a reservation because Chinese pens are replica's of OEM brands.

  • @tathagata_chakrabarty

Sir, I have another one, Jinhao 911. This writes super smooth as well (within ₹350). Other than that, I have Jinhao X450 and X750 (also under ₹1000). These are not hooded, but I should say, these are two of the smoothest pens I've ever used. However, the only drawback is, these are not as wet as our usual Indian Kanwrite, Click or Beena pens. So you don't get the line variations. That's a drawback for me.

I do not have any pens from India. I have looked at many of these pens from Ranga and others but have yet to buy one.
As with all manufacturers there are a set of nibs that are used for various models. Some are exclusive to a model. One example is the Jinhao X159 which has a #8 steel nib. No other model has this nib.
As for posting the cap onto the barrel, it depends on the weight of the cap and length of the barrel. Some pens are made to be posted as the barrel is short and the weight of the cap actually balances the pen on your hand. As for most of the pens made it is not needed to post the cap.
