it is appreciated, the problem is lack of documentation/performance data for japanese fighters. This is why sturmovik devs switched from pacific to normandy
@@truenetgmx there are some extant TAIC reports about japanese aircraft and the zero got analyzed to death but I agree - i'll never know the true roll rate of a kate or val for instance
its rare for a game to acuratly portray just how much flak the pilots went through that day, have to admit the devs did an excellent job on this. hard to believe on the actual day a US pilot scored hits on 2 carriers in seperate attacks and 1 cruiser in his dive bomber (Norman J. “Dusty” Kleiss) all the while facing odds like this. Nice mission Taff, nice flying too. sadly american pilots who survived and were picked up by the japanese were brutally murdered in retribution.
Yeah, I recall reading how down US pilots were taken prisoner by Japanese naval personnel, only to be beaten and eventually killed. I also recall hearing about a downed Japanese pilot being hauled aboard a USN ship, then killed with a wrench by some vengeful American sailor.
@@tearthemhindpartsup yea, there's gun cam footage of a A26 straffing a life raft full of japanese troops from a recently torpedoed troop carrier, has the narrator saying "dont worry they wont miss on the next pass" or something similar.
@@rufuszell Yeah, I've seen that newsreel. The footage shows one Australian Beaufighter lighting up enemy life boats with cannon and mg, and the pilot "literally" thumbing his nose at them afterwards.
@@tearthemhindpartsup Yea the IJN/IJA did themselves no favours with their horrific treatment of POW's, which meant that most allied forces would not even hesitate to do whatever it took to kill as many Japanese as they could.
Right, just update the graphics and charge say $20-$30 I'd pick one up. This sim is so good, our squad flew countless incredible mission with the Zuti mod and other upgrades by the various camps.
@stablegun314 forget about the newer il2 game. There is a new game called combat pilot which is headed by Jason Williams who was the lead on current il2. And it's starting with pacific theater.
Dear God. All those Devastators taking off at the beginning really look like they're just skimming the water. Barely lifting off under their own power. Just proof of how obsolescent they really were.
That was a fun watch! Some comments on effects, from the perspective of an inveterate effects tweaker. 😉 The water ring for larger disturbances disappears too suddenly, instead of fading away. The light calibre flak bursts have the flash lasting far too long, more resembling fuel burns, with an upward motion like convection. In reality these flashes lasted a small fraction of a second. Actually, the heavy flak flashes last too long as well. The flak illumination is too intense, in that it lights up the surface even in daytime. In my own implementation I have the intensity toned down, scaled in intensity as the Sun elevation (during twilight), and active only when the Sun is below the horizon. There are other issues I'll pass over in this brief missive. 😉 Cheers! Glenn
There’s a real hole in the current gen sim market for Pacific theater campaigns that somebody really needs to fill. A map set in The Slot would be a great start, considering you had aircraft of both navy and land based air forces in the area. Also would offer both land based strike missions as well as anti-ship mission variety.
Fun fact: That torpedo you're carrying was never tested because of how expensive they were. To complicate matters pilots had to fly low and slow leaving them open to aa fire and fighter attacks. Only 1 in 10 torpedos were successful. The engineers response to this news was pilot error.
Another fun fact: It took the engineers until late 1942 to admit it was their fault, and it wasn't until 1944 that the torpedoes were improved in any substantial way
Actually they did test them but only twice 1 worked, 1 didn’t, check out unauthorized history of the pacific war on TH-cam and their American torpedo problems episode.
Would love to see more of this Taff. There's some wonderful mods you can get for IL-2 1946 to generally improve it a little bit, certainly the visuals! Still an amazing flight sim to this day and one we desperately need remade with more modern visuals and mechanics. Still just about the best flight sim for encapsulating the sheer scale of WW2.
I still use IL2-1946, no other sim has the PTO; no other sim has a so good AI (not only enemy but above all wingmen AI: they do follow your orders and come back if you ask them during or after a dogfight, they do not go away forever at the first enemy bullet like in other sims). This video is great ! Thank you to Taff ! It shows how wonderful is this sim now with all new improvements by modders! I have to add that in the video it is not used Reshade, which greatly improve gfx (Taff you should use it)! Another great add (not in this video) is the modded flyby sound (tiger flyby sound mod is much more better that the default !) Taff, I really hope this is the first of a series of video with this great sim
Remember, many Americans died after bailing out over water because the parachute harness were too complicated to remove when under stress, like being pulled under water by a water-filled parachute canopy. The British harnesses could come off with a single punch to a center mounted release button.
So I don’t know if The Battle of Samar is a scenario in the game, but if it is that’d be a good one to do, because that’s the most bonkers, against all odds engagement of the war. By the end, The aircraft from the escort carriers ran out of all munitions and had to make mock bombing/torpedo attacks and even fake strafing runs against a huge Japanese task force. Seriously huge, they sent the Yamato.
It may be an old game, but I still think it's one of the best, especially the campaign mode. Really immersive, with the advantage swinging from side to side. Plus, it's cheap, and you don't have to keep purchasing extra modules. Sure, it doesn't look anything special, but then, if you're watching the sunlight reflecting of spent brass from your guns instead of thinking about how to manage your energy in a massive furball, then you'll be shot down before you can say; "Ahhhhh..... Pretty...." Another great video Mr Taff!
Great Game, played it for many years!!! Now i played Warthunder on SeriesX, for me a direct and "quickversion" of great Online Dogfighting und Bombruns for free. With really cool fighterspirit. I love all the Fighters& Tanks with the cool Cockits and all the stuff about every vehicle...But IL-2 1946 i never delete on my Laptop👍
Yes a slot campaign as mentioned in other comments here would be perfect, you'd have ground based and carrier based aircraft, carrier groups, bombardment groups, landing operations.
Devastator was equal with its contemporaries(not obsolete). Try torpedo bombing the same target with IJN B5N 'Kate" or RN Fairy Swordfish 'String bag'. The torpedo mounting profile is more streamlined than the previous 2 aircraft since it is seated in the fuselage; not hanging from it. Although being replaced by the Avenger, TBF's performance at Midway(admittedly for the first time) was worse. Outside of that, great cinematics.
Nice job on this Taff. Did you torpedo detonate? I can’t get mine to blow up using mission editor. How did you select the plane you were in? Key command for that? Where can I find this download to play? Thanks again. I 17th the motion for pacific carrier career. Maybe Solomon Islands………….
Nice flying were you able to shake that last bomb and hit the carrier on that last run? I am re-installing all the IL2 products from Steam today and looking forward to playing again
I'm using a X52 HOTAS, but any joystick will be a great benefit for and Il-2 game, always preferable if you can get one with a stick twist for the rudder controls
Also how did you manage to Use the Plane Devastator that can carry torpedoes because for some reason on the quick battle maker it won't let me play as a torpedo bomber but only the dive bombers? How's that?
IL-2 Great Battles is fine, but I still gravitate to 1946 as the best WWII flight sim. Similar to how I enjoy Silent Hunter 3 the most in sub sims. What is it with games that they lose their charm with every sequel?
very nice mission and well made emergency landing. IS there any kind of achievement or medals or rewards if u save the pilots during a campaign/mission ? this would be cool
Very cool but there is NO WAY the Japanese carriers and their escorts put up that much AA fire. The Japanese doctrine was to use their fighter CAP to neutralize incoming torpedo and dive bombers, not their weak Type 96, and type 2 and 4 small caliber AA guns. They simply didn't have the capabilities to put up that much of an AA screen, and never did.
I will never be upset to see IL2 1946 pacific content. Such an underappreciated theater for modern flight sims.
