The triple engine Yamaha is a gem. Loved my XSR900, it was the comfort that made me sell it after 4 years. I think the new Suzuki GSX-S 1000GT looks a good bet. Hoping to get a test ride later this month. Good review, cheers.
I've got a Tracer 9 GT in this colour and i love it , i do agree about the screen though , it is a bit noisy , but other than that i love it , the TFT screens are a bit of a marmite thing but i don't spend all my time staring at them , Good review Andy
This bike is in the top group of bikes I'd consider if I ever replaced my trusty old Versys 650. The more I've read about engine design, the more I think the inline 3-cyl is the optimum compromise for a bike. Oh, and those headlights are a hell of a surprise; I assumed those were the optional driving lights. I could do without the instrument cluster looking like a scuba divers face.
I sold my versys 650 and i got this 9 gt. I have to say that it was a serious upgrade. You will not beleive guys how much different it could be a 900 from a 650 motorcycle. By the way, i loved my versys. It was a great and honest motorcycle
@@sakis231000 I have a 2009 Versys 650 which I use for trips with the wife, commuting and in the city. I found a great deal on a 2020 Tracer 900GT, but when I found out about it's 167kg load limit I decided against it. I visited the dealership to see the 2021 Tracer 9 GT. I liked the bike (except the dash) and its lower seat height. Test ride is not available though and I am afraid to make the switch.
@@mifili64 i had the 2009 versys too. The green one. I really believe that there is nothing to regret. If you can buy the 9gt and not the 2020 tracer , it would be great. The new one has serious upgrades.
It’s a great platform, for sure. They’ve just made some really odd choices in the finishing off and those choices have put me off completely! Maybe the next generation will be more my cup of tea?! 🤣
Tall guy bike problems, 6'5" here and it's always a problem, buffeting. My GS is the first one with frontal area that works reasonably ok for me with an aftermarket slightly broader windscreen on it.
Same here, GS is the only bike that fits and even that can sometimes feel a bit cramped in the leg department. I've put Wunderlich Vario Ergo 3D on top of the oem screen and it's great, I can ride pretty fast with the visor open. Side buffeting is still an issue though.
So even the mighty GS needs some extra work to be almost good enough for tall people!? Guess i just need to strengthen my neck muscles, get some heated clothing and stick to nakeds!! 🤣
I honestly don't know how you do it on that Honda?! Years of playing basketball have destroyed my freakishly long legs, hips and back, of all the bikes that I tried the GS is the most forgiving and I susspect GSA would be even better, haven't had a chance to ride one yet...
Cheers John. That’s what i always try to do. No point glossing over the negatives and having people hate me when their purchase didn’t match up to what i said!!

Hey Andy, the noisy screen is largely dependent on which helmet you wear and what your head positioning is ... hence you being a tall rider must increase Noise for you significantly. It's cool that you are a big rider testing this bike and giving fellow Giants a heads-up. But ideally you don't spent this much time talking about this issue (which a lot of 6.0 and 5 10 people won't even notice). #justsaying #feedback Thanks for your Review. Quiet quick and pointy otherwise.
Totally agree. I’m certainly outside of the bracket of ‚average rider‘ so naturally things will be a bit noisier for me. Unless i reach completely over the screen, then it’s quiet again!!
Weird isn’t it. I don’t understand their logic. An adjustable seat that works the opposite to how it should, is worse than no adjustable seat in my opinion!
The windscreen wouldn't worry me much as I've always had to add a wing or change the screen out entirely on all my bikes except BTW R12RT. Same for the seat. Ergonomics is key to comfort, comfort is a large part of awareness on long haul. The yamie engine seems good enough. Good review Andy.👍 thanks for sharing your prospective.
Totally agree with the ergonomics. It’s amazing aswell that small changes can make massive difference to comfort. Having this seat take the full available length abs adjust directly up and would probably have resulted in one of these bikes in my garage. Shame for Yamaha!
Good man Andy, an honest review. I bought my 2016 Mt-09 Tracer shortly after watching your review back in the day. Yes, I'm modded the seat, changed the screen and added a few bits and bobs and also a little something to help the fueling. Is it perfect, no ... would I changed it ... no way, love it ... I'll send you a pic of my seat, it may change your mind good Sir ... Greetings by the way from Ireland ... SB.
@@AndyManCam Andy, you could be riding an old CG125 and still enjoy it as you throw it around those mountainy back roads you keep finding, with snow, and buses, and Porsches, and blonde Ferrari drivers ... Keep up the good work Mr. Andrew.
Windshields have been a challenge for me too. It took 3 times trying after market windshields on my 2009 BMW F650GS (twin) but finally got it dialed in.
I have a 2018 Tracer, no issues with throttle response(now it has learned how to deal with E10) Screen is a pita as it produces noise & buffeting, but they're not that expensive to swap for another. Mine was supposed to have cruise(according to the blurb on advert)but if it has it, dunno where it's been hidden :P Arthritis means I'd prefer it to have cruise, but instead I just don't ride whenever the joints are complaining. I try & avoid the wet n cold too, but living in NW England with 2 types of weather (wet n cold or warm & wet)that's not easy.
I own a 2017 model, don't like the looks of the new one much it doesn't look very robust, yes they all have the same niggles but are worth sorting if you're keeping it, it's that engine 0 - 100 its bonkers....I love it !! 👍👍👍👍
Looks like a nice bike. I just traded in my 2003 bmw R1150rs for a 2006 Yamaha fz6n and I am loving it so much smoother than the bmw and way lighter as I have a bad shoulder from an accident a few years ago.
It is a really nice machine. But not a hit for my tastes & needs. There’s a lot to be said for lightness and smoothness! I was also thinking i could happily have something a bit lighter and less powerful. Who needs 150+ Bhp anyway!
Fully agree even tho my bmw was 93bhp and 280kg and the fz6 is I think 98bhp and 186kg. But to me the difference is faired to naked so much nice and I am now a 43 year old kid with a massive permanent grin on my face. Hope you do find the right bike for you.
I’m usually straight on the tube when a new video of yours comes out Andy, this time I’ve tried to hold off as long as possible … the reason why is that after your previous review I bought one of these (the 2017 version). No regrets it’s an amazing bike. Didn’t want to watch this review and think I need to change … thankfully although the bike looks good there’s not enough for me to think yes I need that bike 😃. Another great review mate, thankfully you haven’t costed me thousands this time 😂
Haha! Glad to hear you saved some money this time! Same here. I was ready to talk prices after the test ride… that is before i took the test ride! The dealer said the solution was for me to buy it, the comfort seat and then have it customised. Nice one centurion! 🥸
Told you on the live chat Andy XR all day long from the Honda get yerself on TLRs for a spin. Had a 20 plate T9GT gave up after 1200 miles now on the darkside riding the 1250 GS best move of the last three bikes owned.
I had a quick test ride on one of these, couldn’t agree more re the screen buffering and I’m a short arse. I was very impressed with the QS though, found it as smooth as silk and also thought the bike was very light, surprised how heavy it is in the spec
I knew it, as soon as I saw that you testriding something you plan to get something new. To be honest, I would lying if I say that I like the looks of the new Tracer especially the cockpit. The cockpit looks like naked bikes cockpit with an oversized windscreen. I would strongly suggest you to wait for the Honda NT 1100, to me that is the best looking bike from Japan. The current Versys 1000 is a close second. It will be interesting to see what you will choose in the end. In any case, I wish you good luck to find a bike which fits you mate :)
Sadly I’ll not be buying another Honda. I love my bike to ride, but the quality of finish and customer service has left me rather disappointed. Never the less, I’ll be sticking with the CB1000R for the foreseeable future 👍🏻
@@AndyManCam Well, it is rare to hear that someone has an issue with the fit and finish of a Honda. To be fair, I would choose the Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE, if I would have that amount of money. I really like that NT 1100, but an inline 4 engine is just more my cup of tea. The Versys 1000 would be even more of an attractive option with a bit more power, not sure why Kawasaki don't use the Ninja 1000 SX map
Yes absolutely, it looks like a great balance of everything. Sadly test rides are very difficult and stressful to arrange in Germany. None of the manufacturers want anything to do with me and the dealerships want to make the test rides as short as possible.
I like my tracer 900gt (2020) alot more. Suspension isnt as good and the quickshifter only goes up (not down) but everything else i like more on the previous model including looks. The windshields on tracer have always been bad..
Not hard to believe. I love the look of the old model too but REALLY like the tech grey new one. I really wanted to love it, but it’s just not a Winner for me.
Cheers Robert. I think that the fact that i want to avoid the GS is enough reason for me not to have to try very hard to avoid it! Ultimately i really dislike the look and they’re far too expensive for me!
The Gold Wing is the same. I hated them until I test rode one (while waiting for the Versys I had gone to ride to be returned from an extended test ride)...I bought the Wing....
Hi Andy, i own the 2016 Tracer 900 and hated the screen and could only go two ways, higher or lower and went for the lower and have a low smoked black sport screen on it now and its great, yes im in the wind but like that a lot having come from the 2008 CB1000R. I have never had any problems with the throttle response on mine (i think i have a lucky example). The seating position is way better when de bars are positioned more to the front, for me its perfect (but took a few rides to get used to after the CB1000R), went all the way to the Alps and back from here in holland and i must say i never had any aches or pains. I think your length has a lot to do with it and maybe a bigger bike would work better (the 1250 GS?). Thanks for the review, gonna do a test ride on the Tracer 9 GT once as that will most probably be my next bike, but then again you never know :)
Totally understand the screen thing mate. I still prefer being in the wind and have given up the idea of anything with a screen. The GS seems like an anti-bike to me. So many Screens, sub-screens and screenlets to cut out ALL the wind. Tank Range that nobody in ‚normal‘ life needs. Front suspension that removes cornering feel and more luggage than most SUV‘s. With all that, I’d sooner drive the car!
Nice one. Perhaps the extra large screen is a special anti Covid measure? I quite like it. I think that engine in a Tenere frame would float a lot of boats for people. She said anything that improves my ride smoothness gets the nod from her. Tick. I expect to see a lot of these on the road. Happy travels
Haha! Maybe! Totally agree on the MT/Teneré cross. That would be perfect for me! Like an Africa twin but less boring and with a more enjoyable engine! 😃
Haha! Thankfully there was nobody (which would have been nice to know before i left 😏 typical german customer service!). Thanks very much though Pat. Glad the honest reviews have their place amongst the infomercials!!
Regarding the seat and the windscreen... Yamaha offers the touring screen and comfort (or comfort&heated) seat as option from an accessory catalog. Which may solve annoying buffeting. Also there is like at least 3 other brands offering various screens in sizes and colors. And is not expensive, like 130€. What is quite annoying for me. For some reason there is no indication of remaining range. For a touring bike I think is essential to know how long I can continue until next petrol station . The only indication is a flashing last fuel tank segment which indicates last 3 liters remaining in the fuel tank, which is roughly 60km until stop. Also lack of any phone mirroring feature in brand new bike is facepalm. The new Honda NT1100 is less advanced and powerful but Apple CarPlay as standard is way to go in 2021.
Thats what the dealer said to me. But the fact that I should spend 15,000€ on a bike and then immediately spend another 400€ because Yamaha purposely put rubbish components on their bike so that they could squeeze a bit more profit out, offends me greatly! The stock seat should be the comfort seat! And the screen that comes from the factory would do it’s job. Otherwise it’s just needless plastic pollution. The lack of a range indicator doesn’t bother me so much though I’ve never had one and i mostly manage to know how far i can still go. Phone mirroring is also a non-issue for me. I now tend to ignore my phone completely while I’m riding. I don’t need to know what’s going on in the world until i stop for a break!
@@AndyManCam Fully understand I am on the same page. Point of my comments is the bike is otherwise great and instead avoid and buy something else just for small design errors there is a quite cheap and quick solution to solve mentioned problems. I have the suspicion the windscreen is exactly the same one from the Tracer 900 to cut the cost. Anyway there is no "perfect" bike on the market always something what I don't like. This one is close as possible to have comfortable sport touring bike in my eyes for okayish money. The rest is not so advanced, significantly more expensive or more heavier.
That's the way I went and absolutely LOVE it! Tank is *just* large enough to tour with...looks like a new MT10 coming out next year...could be THE ONE... ;) :D
The tank IS small, but it’s not so small it’s impossible. As Matt said, it’s definitely tourable. Obviously the Honda still had 3-4 litres of fuel by the time the MT-10 had to fill up…. 😜
The engine is a cracker. The seat, screen and instrument cluster, not so much. Beggars belief how and why, Yamaha can get them so wrong. They offer a touring screen and comfort seat as optional extras, which to me says, "The stock ones are crap, but for an additional outlay, these can be improved". And just whack a full size colour TFT screen an the thing. I'm in the market for this style of bike but Yamaha won't be getting my money for this bike. Great review as always.
I totally agree. They should have either put the display from the MT-10 on there, or just a single one like the MT-09. With the seat and screen, i‘m also with you. They’re purposely made it rubbish so they can make money on Upgrades. Shameful.
Ridden the Triumph Tiger 900 and really didn’t like it at all. Doesn’t look that youthful from the front. The mirror started flapping around mid test ride. Didn’t feel very premium for the price point. I’m looking at the Tracers, Versys and V-Stroms now
Andy, have you tested the Kawasaki z900rs, should be comfortable for taller riders and has nice retro look and a good engine with a very good midband power
I actually didn’t. I was heartset on the single sided swingarm and wide tank of the Honda. In hindsight maybe a test of the Kwak would have been prudent! Luckily the ending of the CB doesn’t ever leave me wanting, so that’s good at least!
You mentioned the Tiger - will there be a video for that too, or will we hear your thoughts on that (vs Tracer GT?) Perhaps another series for bike options? Sorry that the thou isn't quite working out.
Sadly not! The test ride was a disaster! 25 minutes of city traffic, 10 minutes of straight country road and then 25 minutes of city traffic back! 😱 It’s the entire reason why there aren’t more test ride vids on my channel! 😂
Supremely frustrating! And i explained this to the dealer, he told me that it was my fault because i went the wrong way. And that was that. If I hadn’t asked about the possibility of a longer test ride, he’d have left the situation at that!! But when i DID ask, he suggested i could hire the bike for a weekend for 500€!!! ‚Great‘ service gets ‚greater‘!!!
As a fellow tall person I ride a naked bike, Screens unless they are huge barn doors just don't work on any bike that I like. I tested the previous model of this bike as a possible replacement to my 2016 MT10. Just haven't found anything I enjoy riding more than the 10. That dash set up on the Tracer just looks like Squidward from Sponge bob square pants!
I know right! What were they thinking! Totally agree on the screen thing. I guess i just needed to remind myself!! 😂 Back to the Honda. All is forgiven!
The early gen tracer has eccentric bar risers, so if you spun them around 180° you could move the bars forward or backward, not by much, around 20mm i think, so i wonder if the new one has the same system to compensate for change in seat position?
It does. I mentioned it in the video somewhere. But still doesn’t make sense to raise the seat forward and drop it backwards. It should give you the option of more room in both directions instead of the weird compromise that this bike provides. A near miss for me!
@@AndyManCamOh i must of missed that bit (watching at work 😁). Yeah as you said, they seem to have it backwards, the low postion should be more forward and vice versa 🤦♂️
Maybe. It’s not a bottomless money pit that I’m going to get into though! I think it’s cemented my thinking that naked bikes are still the best Allround fit for me.
@@AndyManCam I’ve got a SDGT with a tiny little screen that provides just enough protection from the wind blast without the buffeting. I tried a bigger screen but it just caused more wind noise
Occupational hazard! 😅 Though TBH I’ve now got a 1090 Adventure, so I’m back on the hunting for a good screen bandwagon. Sadly no solutions yet although the smallest seems to be the best so far.
Try the Z1000SX. Slightly biased here as I own one but, I’ve tried many sports tourers and the Z1000 gives me the fizz over the rest. Amazing in the twisties and a legend while filtering. Kind on the botty too. It does everything very well indeed.
@@AndyManCam Go and try one anyway. You might have just been dehydrated?! I’m 6”2, and bike size has been an issue for me also. My Wanda, has been the only bike I’ve ever owned, that I can ride all day without feeling completely shagged out at the end of it. I’ll stop banging on about it now. Hope you find a worthy steed soon.
I think it’ll be a while before I’ll get that chance. They’re the only dealer and that’s the only tester. There was nothing wrong with it, it worked. But compared to the slickness of this yamaha one, it was clunky.
I noticed you had the Beeline Moto connected to the bike and would like to know your thoughts on it, is it worth the money and does it perform well enough to be a good replacement for a Garmin or TomTom?
It’s expensive for what it is and you have to be VERY precise with your waypoints. Otherwise i love it! Battery lasts forever and it means i spend less time looking at a map on screen and more time actually reading the road ahead. 👍🏻👍🏻
@@AndyManCam “very precise with the waypoints” would drive me crazy, I use a lot of imported routes and like to just jump on and ride, so that could be a bit too frustrating for me I think. And of course the price is very high for such a simple device, being able to charge and ride a few days and the size is what made me interested in it. Let’s hope they do something about the price then maybe it would then convince me to trying it out. For now I will leave it for what it is as my TomTom is still up to job.
I was partially impressed. The reason for my grumpiness was more that they ruined what promised to be a GREAT bike, with that rubbish seat, bad screen, ugly screen and poorly thought out/executed dash. So close yet so far!
That was one of the things that really convinced me. On the way to the test ride, two passers by did a full 180 degree rubber neck looking at my bike. On the Tiger 900 and the Tracer 9….. nothing!
Christmas comes early, that’s 2 AndyManCam videos in less than a week👍🏻🔝🎥🎬🆒 #MorePlease P.S.. Mate, you can’t drop a bomb like that at the end🤯 CB1000 getting traded in??? Going sport touring like TLR? Keep us posted pal!
I do what i can mate! Don’t worry about the bomb dropped. That was a few weeks ago and since then I’ve got bar risers, lowered pegs and a new rear shock for the CB. I’ll give it one more chance!
@@AndyManCam Is it the fit of the CB that is your only area concern regarding the bike at this point? I guess the rear shock also, which you are not alone in having an issue with. Just wondering if any other annoyances have crept up over your ownership experience. Considering getting a '21.
Other than the fit, which is only slightly off but makes itself known on longer rides, and the shock, my biggest peeve is the paint. It’s AWFUL!! The oil sump and the front of the engine are down to the metal. Also the generator cover on the right side has serious molding imperfections that I’m fighting with Honda to get fixed.
Hey Andy, if you're thinking about another bike, maybe I could interest you in another retro style bike: The Triumph Speed Twin. And as it happens, I would be able to provide one in Hamburg if you're interested 😄 I did a 2500km Alps Tour last year with it (similar to your tour), and I still like it 😉
It wouldn’t really be fair as my test ride was very inconclusive. 25 minutes of traffic, 10 minutes straight national’s and then 25 minutes traffic back. 🤦🏻♂️ I did find the ergonomics comfy, engine note very boring (none of the bark i remember from Bulldog Gaz’s Tiger). The dash was confusing and cluttered but the windscreen was pretty good. Otherwise i got nothing from it!!
Maybe you should check out the MT-09SP? That one you could tune to your liking more easily whilst having the same peach of an engine. It seems to be more you...
@@AndyManCam, spring is too way off… you’ll forget what the Tracer felt like for a direct comparison. Find a nice day and do it soon. You’ll be giving us lot some good honest feedback in the process. Everyone else seems to like all bikes saying that they’re all good, when in fact, whilst neither bike is bad these days but myself I struggle to find the perfect bike. For instance, I totally relate to what you said about the ergonomics of the Tracer, seat sliding you forward into the tank and handlebars not feeling right. It was the same with the previous generation. Why is that? It doesn’t feel natural to me. For ergonomics nothing beats Honda. All the bikes I tested from the manufacturer seem to feel right from the get go. Even the simple CRF250! Yamahas do make some lovely engines though.
Unfortunately I’m just not going to be able to fit it in. Coupled with the annoyance of making a test ride in Germany! I think I’ll be sticking with the Honda for at least another season. The window of opportunity has opened and closed again!
@@AndyManCam that’s a shame! Would have wished to see what you thought about the new SP. I’ve got the 2018 version which since I’ve converted with LSL bars, the same ones you’ve got has transformed itself into a real weapon. From the chassis changes they did to the new version plus added features like auto blipper, mine has upshift only, cruise control, more fancy electronic aids and modes, it should be a better performer.
Have a 2019: the screen is awful, I am 6ft, so noisy and directs turbulence at my head. Changed to a short sporty screen and it is beetter but still messy. Rode with no screen and thats the best but it doesn't look great. Fab engine though and handles great. Actually everything is good apart from the screen, and maybe the seats not super good but ok for 3 hours
I found the same on my old Versys 650 TBH. No screen was the best, but looked awful! So i had a tiny self chopped down one for a long time. Naked bikes for the win!
The windscreen is tooooo long causing noise and this bike almost killed me while wobbling at 180kmh. Super powerful engine but something bad is with this bike. I think handlebars cause wobbling and rear swingarm is too stiff.
Buffeting is one and only reason why I skipped tracer 9. Sick of tired of searching for windscreen that will resolve problem and I don't want a huge tall windscreen that will impact behavior of the bike in corners etc, buy one regret one, buy second regret second, learned lesson on my cb500x. Got myself mt09 and man, smooth air and chest wind all day instead of buffeting, it's a worst motorcycle experience you can get.
@@AndyManCam i'm 6.2, small deflector on original windscreen and I can smoke while riding;) I can't stand bugs on naked or low screen while touring. Please advice what for versys 650, tracer 9 or Tiger 900, I like the most twisties by it is far away from home and I need get there comfortably:(
Wow and i thought this would be a good bike for us bean poles! Just bought my first "big" bike after passing my full uk and went for something with a bench seat so more movement options.
I’ve just written off one of these! Actually, it was the 2019 model. I don’t think they have improved the looks with this upgrade but I gather they have improved the geometry. The triple engine is widely praised and I loved it, but it did encourage a little too much exuberance from me at times. The screen was the worst part of the old bike and I am also 6”4. Total pants.
That would have to be after dealing with that seat though, which i think is a far more fundamental problem. Would be keen to get a go on the new Suzi. Pity they never invite me to anything!
Comparison to your Honda. Much more useful. Speed/ acceleration is deceiving. Ride with someone who has a Honda like yours, your faster than you think. Throw screen away ! I use a short cut down screen, no panniers, feels lively like a sport bike. On trips (and in winter) I use a Puig Tall screen with deflector, 4 screws and just clip panniers on. 10 minutes. Now it’s a tourer. Kawa sx is more old school but pretty handy.
To be honest, once back on the Honda afterwards, i realised that the Tracer was a bit breathless in comparison. Ultimately isn’t it more about how it feels than what it actually is? After all, most of the time (on the best rides) we’re out on the road alone!
@@AndyManCam Your right. It’s how it feels that counts. I didn’t realise how fast it was until I rode with my regular guys. You get a more linear power, the 4’s get that lovely woosh, like my CBR 600 does. If you like 4’s, and something a bit more useful, like Tracer, with clip on panniers and a bit of wind protection, the Kawa sx is great. Good riding.
It is strange how sometimes the feeling can be misleading. I was convinced that i rode faster on the FZ1 because i felt smoother and more lazy on the CB1000R. Turns out I’m much quicker on the lazier feeling bike!
Sorry if this has been asked before, could someone tell me what that round thing in the middle of the handlebar is? Looks like a mini-direction pointer... Wouldn't mind having that there instead of my phone. Phone mount isn't letting me reach the key easily which is rather annoying :3
Hi Spiros. It’s a Beeline Moto. Check it out here: www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/533426/#/27945,3255,0 Very cool little gadget that massively minimises navigation. 👍🏻
I think that you'll prefer the MT09 as it doesn't have a screen. Mind you, it's as ugly as hell. Maybe the XSR900 will be the one for you. As it's a retro they might do a flatter seat option for the XSR ( think I'm clutching at straws there ) Speed twin, maybe. They definitely do a flat seat for that ...... but then it's not a triple or a four, but it would be my choice of the naked bikes.( although I like a screen, so might choose the Tracer ) but I'm 6" shorter than you. What about Z900 or Z900RS? There's just, never, a perfect bike. Nice review, Andy. It shows that you haven't been loaned the bike by the manufacturer and feel that you can't give your totally honest opinion on the bits that you don't like.
I think so too. I think this has proven to me that i still prefer naked bikes. At some point I’ll just need to maybe get a bigger naked bike! The XSR looks all wrong to me. The last model had that horrible cheap dash and taillight. This time they’ve lazily plonked the same dash on as the MT-09 (so not at all retro and no styling effort expended) and drive something VERY odd with the rear seat. Looks like the seat my dads old XS400SE had. And that was NOT a stylish bike!! Somebody has definitely fallen asleep at the wheel in the Yamaha styling department.
That wobbling would be an instant no from me F that that's dangerous could start a tank slapper.maybe try an BMW xr1000 my brother has one it's rapid and good for lanky boy's.
It was a bit disconcerting. I’m certain it had nothing to do with the geometry of the bike though. A short / no screen would likely make everything better!
As an owner of a 2015 T9, i can confirm that the stock throttle response is atrocious. However, there is a number of things you can do to dramatically improve it, most of them for free. Without getting into detail, i would say the mods make the throttle response >acceptable
It’s so very much better on this one. Finally it’s not just hype from Yamaha about supposed improvements. It was a really fun bike to ride, but those ergo issues and the screen baffle me. Also i found the engine surprisingly a little breathless compared to my (supposedly) low on torque inline 4! Next!!
@@AndyManCam True that. I went through 3 different windscreens untill i settled for a tiny one in the lowest position so that i just get a clean stream of air instead of all the buffeting at the helmet. The CBR does have more CC and is aparently geared lower than the T9, but i get what you mean. I'm also on the look - as every motorcycle owner ever - currently trying to figure out if i could live with the looks of the new Ducati V2 S.
Quick-shifter, down-blipper, soft, softer, really soft modes, power modes, TFT, anti slide, anti lift, blah blah blah. Methinks I will stick with my 1991 Kawasaki Voyager xii
I hear you mate! I kind of miss the old days of everything being simple and not needing a computer to fix it! I’m always tempted to sell up and get something with a carb and a nasty sounding pipe!
I think that after tales of electrical woe (some firsthand from The Likeable Rider) surrounding the SDR, I’d go for the MT09 SP. Plus it’s considerably cheaper!! 🤣
the engine is a blast, especially with that quickshifter. The ergonomics though, bleah and I'm 176 cm with 82 cm inseem (that 32 "). The seat is canted but the bars kept me straight so I started developing this subtle but noticeable pressure pain in my lower back after an hour or so. For my height the pegs are exactly in the wrong place preventing me to plant the foot properly. I don't have a small ars but the seat was too wide for me, to the point I got cramps in ma hips. The controls are pretty fidly, especially that darn wheel on the right hand. At least the wind shield worked for me :) Seriously, awsome machine, if it would just fit me. Oh and that fancy suspension, works nice on smooth roads and bumpy roads but transitioning, it takes a couple of bumps to "learn". Can be weird, especially on more aggresive turns with hidden bumps. And PLS get rid of that scuba mask of a display. Oh well, back to my trusty V Strom 650 with it's new Ohlins "joints" .
There’s definitely a strong argument for spending money making what you’ve got better, rather than buying into new problems! I’m doing the same. Waiting for a chance to fit my new Wilbers test shock 👍🏻
They’re not my cup of tea either. TBH so much space for the fuel gauge or trip counter seems wasteful to me. It’s a case of adding a tft because they could, and not because it needed it. It’s a side of bike design that i really hate. I have no regrets for buying the CB1000R before the TFT. It’s clean, minimal and has all the info i need to ride my bike!
@@AndyManCam The weight just melts away when on the move and as you are tall you will find it easy to get comfy. Loaded up with touring gear nothing else will keep up over mountain passes etc with GS. Just so confidence inspiring and properly sorted….I know ..everyone’s got one …trust me I have had so many bikes over the years trying to avoid the GS but always come back…and the latest is still the best bike around 👍
@@Hemlck The weight doesn't melt away on hard downhill braking entry into a hairpin (or on repeated fast and tight twisties, (though it does admirably well here too!)), you can't beat the laws of physics! (and the ADV EATS front tyres for breakfast due to EVEN MORE weight... ;) ). It's an amazing machine considering the size and weight, but "nothing else will keep up" seems an odd thing to say! :)
Yeah I’m sure they’re great. But they’re SO expensive that i could by my bike, all the touring gear and STILL have enough left over to buy a small car! Plus i think they’re both ugly and that they take away a lot of what makes biking, biking!
@@mattmutane5502 What I said was - loaded up with touring gear nothing will keep up and I stand by that. Once you put hard panniers, a top box and tank bag etc and fill em with gear for a few weeks of camping touring you have the most capable bike over mountain passes and nothing will keep up. Of course many unloaded lightweight bikes are faster on the twisties (but not by much) but loaded up for touring their handling is ruined.
Good lordy NO! Haven’t you learnt anything from The Likeable Riders experience!? Not to mention they’re about 10 grand more expensive than the Honda was!! I’ll be keeping all KTM‘s to a strictly borrowed only relationship status! 😂
@@AndyManCam he must have got a Friday afternoon bike… mines done 8000 trouble free miles in 12 months including a solo trip to Pyrenees and back via Rotterdam i guess you either get a good un or a lemon
Sad but sadly true. I think it’s another sneaky cop out with manufacturers that they just assume owners will take matters into their own hands and buy an aftermarket seat. Same with screens, mirrors, end cans, mudguards….
I did think you would be considering a change and the Tracer9 GT is an awesome bike but your height is the deciding factor and that screen is the weakest link as well as your fat A** Would love you to do a review on the R1250RS or the XR but sure @TheLikeableRider has already given you a taste of that beast. Great review buddy 👍
More considered. I’m sticking with the Honda for now! The BMW‘s are sadly just way out of my budget, so haven’t even considered them. Pointless torturing yourself!
The triple engine Yamaha is a gem. Loved my XSR900, it was the comfort that made me sell it after 4 years. I think the new Suzuki GSX-S 1000GT looks a good bet. Hoping to get a test ride later this month. Good review, cheers.
I agree and think the Suzy looks fantastic and might take a test ride on one next season
The motor is an indisputable champ. The Suzi could well be worth a look at some point. Have to wait and see where the winds take us!
I've got a Tracer 9 GT in this colour and i love it , i do agree about the screen though , it is a bit noisy , but other than that i love it , the TFT screens are a bit of a marmite thing but i don't spend all my time staring at them , Good review Andy
The screens noisy and a bit rubbish for me. Replace it with a taller one with a deflector on on it or a really short one.
Thanks Craig. If it works for you, then it’s a great bike! Enjoy!!
Good honest review, Andy. The dash looks like the visage of the robot in the film 'Short Circuit'.
Cheers Jim. It’s a dash that only a mother could love!!
@@AndyManCam i like this dash...strange so much hate about this in my eyes nice dash..just because its different
Same here, I'm on Versys as well and after testing few bikes tracer was the best
Also 6'5", tried the Tracer 9 GT and did not like it. So i bought the R1250GS and have the Puig touring screen, works perfectly for me.
Finally someone who gives an honest opinion not just the don’t upset the manufacturer bull.
I have also found that even though i'm 6ft 3 the seat in the lower position makes it flatter and therefore more comfortable.
Weird isn’t it. I don’t understand their logic. An adjustable seat that works the opposite to how it should, is worse than no adjustable seat in my opinion!
Always appreciate the tall guy perspective! I sat on it in the local shop, nope too cramped. Great bike if you're under 6'.
Seems it has to be a cruiser, chopper or adventure bike to let us be really comfy!!
I couldn’t live with the that display, and it’s about time you got a new bike! Good luck with the search
I agree. It gets more ridiculous, the more you look at it. And once you’ve seen Squidward, you can never unsee him!!
I have the MRA vario touring screen in smoke colour from HPS, pushes the air cleanly to my helmet.
Glad to hear there’s a solution 👍🏻
Good man Andy, an honest review. I bought my 2016 Mt-09 Tracer shortly after watching your review back in the day. Yes, I'm modded the seat, changed the screen and added a few bits and bobs and also a little something to help the fueling. Is it perfect, no ... would I changed it ... no way, love it ... I'll send you a pic of my seat, it may change your mind good Sir ... Greetings by the way from Ireland ... SB.

Thank you heartily JR. 😍
That’s the most important but mate, that you’re happy with what you’ve got! I’ve decided to stick with CB1000R for that very reason.
I own a 2017 model, don't like the looks of the new one much it doesn't look very robust, yes they all have the same niggles but are worth sorting if you're keeping it, it's that engine 0 - 100 its bonkers....I love it !! 👍👍👍👍
That’s the important Bit mate! Being happy with the bike you’ve got!
The Groucho glasses look of the twin display makes it impossible to take seriously. Eyes, nose and handlebar mustache 🤣
Yep. It’s a real miss from Yamaha, IMHO.
Looking forward to see what new bike you eventually go for. Your mate 'likeable' has set the bar.. Your move Andy 😀
As it stands, I’ve opted to put more effort into improving the CB rather than throwing exponentially more money at a new bike and starting at zero.
That’s the dream isn’t it! Thanks mate. Either that or I’ll just make the one I’ve got better!
The XR does seem like the best balance of all. Way out of my budget though 😳
I had a quick test ride on one of these, couldn’t agree more re the screen buffering and I’m a short arse. I was very impressed with the QS though, found it as smooth as silk and also thought the bike was very light, surprised how heavy it is in the spec
Yeah it’s a good bike, no doubt. Needs work to be great though!
Great review Andy. I love your commentary. 👍😎🇦🇺
Cheers very much Marcus. Thanks for watching!
Hey Andy, do you consider testing the new Suzuki GSX S 1000 GT? Seems like a great mixture of wind protection, nakedness and touring capabilities!
Great review, I tried every bike possible to avoid the gs but once you sit on one that’s it, now on my second they just have the all round edge
I think you should be looking at multistrada V2/V4 or SDR GT
I think I’d need to be looking at robbing a bank first! 🤣 No Chance in the near or distant future that I’ll ever be looking at either of those!
@@AndyManCam that’s what I think about the GS also, the real bike feeling is lost. Head up in the wind is the best feeling there is 😎
100% exactly that!! 💯
Glad I’m not the next bloke waiting to take it out for a ride 😂
Great review though thanks Andy. Nice to get real world opinions without all the faff.
Haha! Thankfully there was nobody (which would have been nice to know before i left 😏 typical german customer service!). Thanks very much though Pat. Glad the honest reviews have their place amongst the infomercials!!
As always brilliant mate
Too kind Martin. Cheers mate. 😊
@@zdenekanyz9870 very true mate. If enough of it works for you, it’s worth getting on board!
Can’t un-see the Groucho Marx dash :) as comments below.
Fancy an MT-10 with touring addons but the tank is ridiculously small.
Very honest review, good man.
Thank you very much George!
I’m looking at the Tracers, Versys and V-Stroms now
Happy shopping mate! My Tiger 900 test ride was was short and pointless that i didn’t really get to see anything!! 😂
I’m also 6’4 and I suffer the same on bikes with screens, my AfricaTwins buffeting has driven me to sell it.
That is serious, but i can totally understand it. I’m about to venture into that world again and hope i can find a workable solution!
@@AndyManCam ahahahah that's outstanding, how frustrating
My 1200 Tenere had killer turbulence for my 6'3". A 22" windscreen fixed that.
Seems it really is a trial and error affair! Though funny that so many people have issues finding even ONE position that works with the stock screen.
The early gen tracer has eccentric bar risers, so if you spun them around 180° you could move the bars forward or backward, not by much, around 20mm i think, so i wonder if the new one has the same system to compensate for change in seat position?
Oh and a shorter sport screen sorted my wind buffeting out.
Madness. Must have been an idea on Friday afternoon, just before hometime!! 🤣
The buffeting from the screen is a major fail. Possibly fixed by adding a spoiler to the top
I’m also very much of the less is more school of thought, when it comes to Screens.
@@AndyManCamwhat about bugs?
Occupational hazard! 😅 Though TBH I’ve now got a 1090 Adventure, so I’m back on the hunting for a good screen bandwagon. Sadly no solutions yet although the smallest seems to be the best so far.

Hope you find a worthy steed soon.

Cheers mate! Yeah those clocks would constantly make me feel like somebody is watching me!
Try another Tiger 900 with quick shifter, the one I was lent while my Tiger 1200 was in for service had an excellent action, up and down.
I think it’ll be a while before I’ll get that chance. They’re the only dealer and that’s the only tester. There was nothing wrong with it, it worked. But compared to the slickness of this yamaha one, it was clunky.
Have you ridden the BMW R1250RT? If you ever do, I'd love to hear your review
I rode the R1200RS and the R1200R and really liked both of them. Tbh i think the R1200R was the start of the naked bike mood!
Good review Andy, not sure of the 2 small clocks though

I'm 5'8 and the buffeting was awful for me too no matter the position of the standard screen.
That’s interesting. What a shame that with all that development power, they can’t figure this out!
You don't sound too impressed. That screen looks awful.
10 settings for heated grips? That seems a bit excessive.
Loving the Rukka gear.
I was partially impressed. The reason for my grumpiness was more that they ruined what promised to be a GREAT bike, with that rubbish seat, bad screen, ugly screen and poorly thought out/executed dash. So close yet so far!
How tall are you? If you are looking for a great and sporty touring bike and your height, the Kawasaki 1000 SX could be an option..
I’m 6‘4“ / 193cm. I do like the idea of the Z1000sx, but sitting on one in the showroom gave me hip cramp! But to crouchy and low for me I’m afraid.

That was one of the things that really convinced me. On the way to the test ride, two passers by did a full 180 degree rubber neck looking at my bike. On the Tiger 900 and the Tracer 9….. nothing!
@@AndyManCam with all the effort you've put into making the bike your own be shame to get rid of it now.
Also very much my thinking. I’ve started, so I’ll finish!
Always quite fancied a Tracer! Screen wise, I never seem to find a screen that doesn't just point messy air at me.
I ended up taking mine off and replacing with a powerbronze mini windscreen. No more buffeting. Im 6'2
I definitely think that it’s better to have a good helmet and stick it in the wind, rather than trying (and mostly failing) to get a big screen.
And as it happens, I would be able to provide one in Hamburg if you're interested 😄 I did a 2500km Alps Tour last year with it (similar to your tour), and I still like it 😉
I actually found the Speed Twin felt even smaller than the Honda. But thanks all the same! 🙏🏻
Beeline! I'll miss your Garmin induced rants.
Haha! Sorry about that! I certainly won’t miss the buggered up routes and power problems!! I’m sure I’ll find something else to lose my rag over! 🤣
Would love to know your thoughts on the Tiger 900 shame about the CB cheers Glenn.
@@AndyManCam cheers .
My pleasure!
Maybe you should check out the MT-09SP? That one you could tune to your liking more easily whilst having the same peach of an engine. It seems to be more you...
I think so. Maybe I’ll try one in the spring.
It’s a baffling situation. Almost like they didn’t even bother Testing it! Still, now that they’ve fixed the fuelling, the core is finally perfect!
I know what you mean. I think i tried 4 different screens on the Versys 650 and never liked any of them! Expensive game!
@@AndyManCamyou should Have bought just a delflector
I tried that and it didn’t help. The best solution i found with that bike was to take the screen off altogether!
@@AndyManCam i'm 6.2, small deflector on original windscreen and I can smoke while riding;) I can't stand bugs on naked or low screen while touring. Please advice what for versys 650, tracer 9 or Tiger 900, I like the most twisties by it is far away from home and I need get there comfortably:(
I guess my extra 2 inches make all the difference! All the noisy air hits me full at eye level!!
Wow and i thought this would be a good bike for us bean poles! Just bought my first "big" bike after passing my full uk and went for something with a bench seat so more movement options.
I thought so too! The adjustable seat and handlebars seemed to good to be true. Bench seat is probably the cleverest course of action!
Yamaha has always made great bikes. The wind screens always suck, not sure why. 😎👍🍻
Strange phenomenon! They’ve always had pretty rubbish EFI throttle response too. Seems they’re finally fixing one of those constants though! 😜
They look tiny if you are over 6 foot.
That’s a shame! Will you look at the new one to replace or go elsewhere?
hello brother what category you are using uploading your video on youtube please replay
Entertainment. 💃🏻
@@AndyManCam ohk but i am using peoples and blogs right now what you recommend me sir
I have no idea if it really makes any difference!
I'd change the screen for a shorter one Defo. New bike I think Suzuki 1000 GT might be a bit of you👍
That would have to be after dealing with that seat though, which i think is a far more fundamental problem.
Hello, good morning, please, why don't you put it on the videos that I know can be translated into Spanish, greetings from Valencia 🙏 Spain
Haven’t we been over this before?
Sorry if this has been asked before, could someone tell me what that round thing in the middle of the handlebar is? Looks like a mini-direction pointer... Wouldn't mind having that there instead of my phone. Phone mount isn't letting me reach the key easily which is rather annoying :3
Hi Spiros. It’s a Beeline Moto. Check it out here: www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/533426/#/27945,3255,0 Very cool little gadget that massively minimises navigation. 👍🏻
@@AndyManCam awesome! Thank you so much 🥰
My pleasure entirely!
A short / no screen would likely make everything better!
brilliant bike
Brilliant at its core, flawed in its execution. 😏
MT09 SP or SDR 3.0?
I think that after tales of electrical woe (some firsthand from The Likeable Rider) surrounding the SDR, I’d go for the MT09 SP. Plus it’s considerably cheaper!! 🤣
@@AndyManCam SDR - really???!! I guess the MT09-SP is cheaper. Or a 2nd hand Speed Triple RS?
@@alexmorgan3435 Also a very good call.
16:07 - 😄😄 Welcome to my world.
Hahahaha! Not true mate! 😚
Consider a KTM adventure if you will. You’ll have the fun and the mile munching capabilities.
Way too expensive and far too many electrical gadgets (that it seems KTM haven’t perfected yet) for me I’m afraid.
Z1000SX. Eccellente!
Too tight for me I’m afraid!
Try the 2021 MT09SP much better bike……not that I’m bias 😉😀
If I’d had the time, i would have given a go on the same day. Definitely looks a bit more up my street!!
the engine is a blast, especially with that quickshifter.
@@AndyManCam hope you get'em and it'll prove to be a good upgrade.
Fingers crossed!
it's just..... that scubamask that keeps staring at ya
It’s disconcerting isn’t it! The designers clearly don’t watch Spongebob! Or maybe they do and this is a crooked joke! 🤣
I really couldn’t live with the TFT Clocks
They’re not my cup of tea either. TBH so much space for the fuel gauge or trip counter seems wasteful to me. It’s a case of adding a tft because they could, and not because it needed it. It’s a side of bike design that i really hate. I have no regrets for buying the CB1000R before the TFT. It’s clean, minimal and has all the info i need to ride my bike!
Too many settings for me, I prefer my ol' trusty 05 FZ1 lol
There’s a lot to be said about the merits of simple! After all, 100% of the Settings used to be in the throttle hand!
Suzukis new gsx-s1000 gt next then
That thing is seriously good bang for buck i'd be seriously tempted if I didn't have an aprilia penchant.
Yeah it’s definitely worth a look!
If it’s a comfy fast adventure bike your after …sorry to say but the 1250 GS is still the best bike in the world 👍
But they’re just so big and heavy! 😜
Quick note. It has almost 120hp 😉 Just saying
Thanks. The devil is in the details.
Is the naked on the way out. 1000 xr on route. 🤣
Noooo, it was just a mild bump in the road! All good relationships have their rough spells!
Superduke R Andy… it would be rude not to lol
Good lordy NO! Haven’t you learnt anything from The Likeable Riders experience!? Not to mention they’re about 10 grand more expensive than the Honda was!! I’ll be keeping all KTM‘s to a strictly borrowed only relationship status! 😂
@@AndyManCam he must have got a Friday afternoon bike… mines done 8000 trouble free miles in 12 months including a solo trip to Pyrenees and back via Rotterdam i guess you either get a good un or a lemon

Your regular viewers can tell by the tone of your commentary whether you’re enamoured or not… This is a not..😎
I really wanted to love this bike, but sadly didn’t. Nice try but no cigar.
@@AndyManCam …however a Tracer 10, based on the MT10-SP might tickle something that the T9 didn’t! 😎🤣
Yamaha need to hire a professional seat designer. They cannot make seats to save their lives at the moment.
An interesting conundrum where next? Watch this space, you fickle motorcyclist person you!
No fear Ron, I’ve decided that where next is back on to the CB1000R, but with a few new bits and bobs. 👌
Not a good exhaust note. Very high pitch and tiring..
It sounds a lot nicer in real life. At the very least it’s a lot more pleasing than the exhaust note of the Tiger 900.
