Fantastic video. Thanks for the extended focus on the windscreens. Many reviewers spend so little time discussing the aerodynamics of a motorcycle, but it is so important for an enjoyable, comfortable ride.
Bought my 1st Yamaha on 2nd Oct 1982. XJ900. Was most likely the best 1/4 fearing/screen Yamaha ever made. No buffeting at all. I did 200km/h+ on it many many times. Never an issue. There was vibration but understandably so at that speed.
One of the first things I did to my '21 Tracer 9GT is to install a four terminal fuse block under the passenger seat that is fed by a diode protected relay switched by the lower accessory port. #30 12V input on the relay is fed from a 20A fused lead from the (+) battery terminal. This allows for easy application of 12V accessories such as heated gear, loud horn, heated seat, etc.
I keep meaning to add a headlight switch. I hate that modern motorcycles mandate headlight is on whenever key is on. When/If the battery eventually is near the end just having the lights off might make the difference beween starting and failing to start. Or there could be situations like in a campground where you dont want to disturb anyone with uneeded running lights ....just would like to have the same option I have with my 4 wheel vehicles to turn the dam lights OFF if I want to
Another excellent and informative video 👍 As an overview, I’ve had my Tracer 9 GT since September 21; where it replaced my previous generation 2018 900 GT. I use mine exclusively for daily commuting around the M25 and through central London, and for long distance touring; typically down to my parents place in Andalusia. I have other bikes for both track riding and the summer street. With regards MODs: I didn’t do much to my 2018 other than a heated comfort seat, MRA Screen Spoiler, Pyramid hand-guard extenders, a 3d Printed SatNav mount (which I think you may have covered in a previous video), a Yamaha Tank Bag and a USB Socket. As the new GT is such a design departure from the last generation the only bits I could move across were the MRA Screen Spoiler and 3d Printed SatNav mount. The rest I sold on the secondhand market. The changes I have found most useful are: 1. The heated comfort seat - I do love a bit of warmth and find the Yamaha comfort seat perfect for my backside. I managed my pre-covid annual 26-hour 1500 mile rides to Andalusia no problem and have no reason to think the same set up on the newer GT will be any less comfortable. I love how it integrates onto the dash too. The previous version had a separate switch that changed colour based on temperature setting. These colours were practically impossible to see in daylight. 2. An MRA Spoiler on a stock screen. I’m 182 cm (6’) and whilst this isn’t perfect it’s certainly good enough for me. Any screen that offers protection will come at the price of having that annoying area of low-pressure behind it. My naked bikes clearly don’t suffer this issue, but I’m willing to compromise for a little protection from the elements. At typical road speeds I find my set up fine. 3. I fitted the Yamaha USB socket on my GT. It’s ‘fine’ but the mounting bracket is rather flimsy and due to this I tend to need both hands to plug/unplug my cable, whilst holding the bracket steady. 4. An SW-Motech ADV Aluminium Topbox and mount. I’m not a fan of the plastic back boxes (aesthetically) so opted for this. I can easily get my work kit and a change of clothes in here. As you mentioned, the panniers are fine for touring, but not ideal on a busy commute, so they rarely get used. That said, I love the lock system and the shape is about as good as they can be, short of a more useful/functional aluminium rectangular design. 5. A large Yamaha tank bag. I do like the new design and the magnetic bit is great, but I was a bit frustrated that my previous bags and lock-ring (which were perfectly serviceable) weren’t compatible. 6. I have fitted Pyramid hand-guard extenders this winter. I didn’t think I’d actually need them, as the T9 GT has larger stock guards than the 2018, but due to my ‘girl sized hands’ (size 7) I find the fingers of thick winter gloves so long, they’re almost dangerous, so tend to wear thinner types. This means the added wind protection is a must to maximise the effectiveness of those heated grips. I just need to try a few on and find the perfect set. One note on Pyramids hand-guard extenders. The website clearly states that no modification to the bike is required, but this is false. The kit provides plastic clips, for which the instructions state a 4mm hole has to be drilled into your OEM guards. Now, I didn’t mind doing this, but it’s one to bear in mind, as the Pyramid extenders really do need this to be undertaken, or they’ll just flap about. On a general note: like you, I have a puncture repair kit and two disc locks under the rear seat, as there’s some really good useable space here. I don’t have fender extenders and I’m not sure they’d do much for me. My bike is absolutely disgusting now after winter; having been liberally ACF’d (with regular top-ups) it will get its spring wash in a few weeks. I find my bikes come up beautifully when I do this, but they do look rough over winter. My top tip here is that my bike store is temperature and humidity controlled and remains below 50% humidity at all times. Any moisture from the day is removed quickly and I’ve never suffered rust on any components. It’s worth looking into, should it be feasible with both storage location and energy budget. The dehumidifier itself is circa £120 and I get around 18-months from them before they pack up (they have a hard life!). I think that’s about it for now. Thanks again for your videos on this bike and all the others, Ed 👍
Great comments Ed, given me some more to think about. I am also looking at fitting the Yamaha USB socket (to that flimsy mount!). I think there is an aux cable to connect it to behind the left front fairing (left when viewing bike from rear). Having looked at the fairing, I cant quite see how it comes off - any tips?
@@roybailey4529 Hi Roy, I can’t put pictures on here, but essentially you (looking from the front - and this is from memory I’m afraid!): 1. Remove the hex bolt above the RH LED headlight. 2. Remove the press clips on the rear side of the fairing; adjacent to the front of the radiator. 3. Under the bars you’ll see the side Yamaha badge. Follow this down to the top of the side fairing and gently, but firmly pull. This is a rubber interference fit and will pop out. 4. Lift the fairing up and pull to disengage the bottom clip (it’s worth having a look at the rear of the bottom part of the fairing to familiarise yourself with the fixing here, as it would be easy to break if you didn’t guide it out of the retaining slot. 5. Install the USB charger into the flimsy shroud (this is a pain to do and is just a matter or perseverance I’m afraid!). 6. Locate the grey male two-pin accessory plug. I seem to remember this has a female blanking cap fitted. As you’re looking at the loom coming up past the corner of the radiator, it splits off and the plug is here (probably taped up). Remove the tape and blanking cap and plug your white USB plug into it. 7. Tidy up the cable so as not to snag anywhere and you’re done. This is as accurate as I can make it from memory, so I’m hoping it’ll help. Any problems do give me a shout 👍
I've owned my Tracer 9 GT since June of 2021 and have put a little under 8,000 miles on it. For me, the stock seat was uncomfortable. I tried an airhawk cushion similar to the one you showed but it didn't work for me. I live in the US and wound up sending the stock and passenger seat to Russell Cycle Works in California. It was around $700 but worth it since they significantly improved the comfort of the original seat. I also replaced the stock windshield with Yamaha's touring version but needed to add a clip on by Puig. Given the seating position and the aerodynamics of the bike there is still wind noise although fortunately no buffeting. With the changes I made I'm very happy with the bike. I appreciate your reviews concerning this motorcycle.
Mind if i ask Barry, when you pull away in 1st, do you get any "rattle/shake" from the bike? Mine is brand new and is doing this. Also clutch engagement, were you ever bothered by it being so far out? Even when i adjust it to Yamaha spec the engagement point seems VERY small and lends to a very inaccurate feeling.
@@Surpriseify I don't experience any "rattle/shake" when pulling away in 1st, but I have the D-mode set at 2. I agree with you about the point of clutch engagement. It took me a little bit to get used to it.
Not a Tracer owner but think crash bars would be an essential (not that I like to test them!) and possibly a Scottoiler. Years of riding a shafty has spoilt me.
Key point on that SW Motech tank ring for people coming from a different bike to the Tracer 9 GT. I've upgraded from a 2017 Fz09 to the Tracer and I can't use the existing tank ring from the Fz09, even though it fits the filler ring. The Tracer requires the double ring because the additional height is needed to clear the plastic guard on the front of the tank.
Almost the first mod I make to any bike is a decent horn. In my case it's usually a Denali Sound Bomb. If it's a chain driven bike, such as the Tracer, then I'll also fit an oiler. I've been using Scottoilers for at least 30 years and see no reason to change. Crash bars are also an essential.
Nice! I appreciate the overview, though I don't own a Tracer - just watching for fun. Why don't manufacturers make fenders that fend off the crap? Has it been determined that the majority of owners prefer the look of the abbreviated fenders? Similarly, why don't they make the instrument faces out of more scratch resistant material (Gorilla glass or something)? Do they put the screens through wind tunnel testing? Is turbulence just unavoidable with this genre of bike due to riding position and distance from the screen?
All excellent questions... to which I have no answer! But, I am going to try to find out. A lot of it, while it appears small amounts, will be down to cost. Cheers, John
@MadChalet They do their research and unfortunately a good looking bike sells in the showroom over some practicalities. £20.00 fix though for fender extender, but you still get crap all over the bike, and great point about shock sox retaining moisture. What would you do you do to your instrument panel to scratch it, but gorilla glass is a great idea. Perhaps they can coat my visor with it ! A high screen distant from the rider will always create turbulence, and a lot is also caused by wind hitting legs and deflecting upwards, though it’s rarely mentioned. I found a huge or no screen at all worked best. Despite its faults, it’s a very fun and capable bike to ride.
The answer to the Sat Nav mount (for me) came from Printed Parts on eBay. It fits simply over the screen adjustment handle above the dash. The screen is still adjustable, and you don't have to look down to see what is going on. And if you would like someone to complain about the standard Yamaha seat, give me a call. That thing is a criminal offence :-)
That's a clever solution. Just found it here www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-Tracer-900-GT-2018-2019-2020-2021-Tracer-9-High-Level-Mount-Sat-Nav-GPS-/203076846886?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0 I guess it's printed from PETG or something other than PLA, which could soften in the heat. Cheers for the MRA review - I've linked it in the written article too, which will update on Monday. All the best John
@@bennettsbikesocial I'm the guy that makes these mounts and run the printed parts eBay shop. They are made from ABS plastic, as described in the eBay listing. The same stuff as motorcycle body panels. It's very strong and does not deform in heat. I was surprised to see you recommending the OEM Yamaha GPS mount. In my opinion it's dangerous and is exactly why I designed the 3d printed mount in the first place. Even mainstream Yamaha dealers agree and have started recommending my product over theirs!
@Steven Downer actually, I didn't recommend the standard mount due to the way it blocks the key - did you see that section in the video? Ah... just found the mention of ABS at the bottom in the small print - might be worth making that more prominent as printing ABS is of course more of a challenge, so some might be left wondering what you'd used.
@@bennettsbikesocial apologies, but as the video title is listed as "best upgrades", and the Yamaha mount is listed in the description links, was a bit misleading to me.
@Steven Downer I listed pretty much everything mentioned to keep it fair, but mention a few products that I wouldn't recommend. The first I heard of your solution was in a comment here, and I made a point of finding it and linking it (and the second time it came up). I was going to add it in the written article as something people might want to consider. If I'd known about it before shooting this, I'd have included it.
I installed the pyramid rear hugger without removing the original hugger(which avoided the suspension sensor removal) just used a dremel with flexible extension and a drill bit. then a piece of scrap aluminium to ensure i didn't drill the tyre. Easy 10 min job to fix using plastic rivets and no messing with suspension sensor.
@@bennettsbikesocial yes def pyramid and if you go to the instructions on their site you can find a picture with the plastic rivets in the fitting instructions
I'm 6'1" and find the standard screen fine. It's considerably better than the Tracer 7 at least. I will get an Ermax low screen for the summer just because I like a bit of breeze
As soon as I got my Yamaha, I went to the local key cutters and got a replacement which is a little bit stronger. They were able to clone the chip from the original key all for about £50. I have the front and rear "Fenda Extender" and think they do a good job I also have the SW Motech PRO tank bag system on two of my bikes and it's really useful and easy to fit. A great mod!
Interesting... why do you think Yamaha made their keys so soft? They clearly know what kind of alloy they're using so it must be intentional... but why? Could it be that lock internals are soft as well and they didn't want a key that is tougher because it could wear out the lock internally?
@@mickeypopa some time ago, on one of my bikes, after about 75,000 miles, the OEM key wouldn't open the fuel cap as it had worn so much. It worked in the ignition. The OEM spare worked just fine. So I think your supposition about soft internals is correct.
You guys did it again! Great video!!! congrats! What I have added to mine is the yamaha touring screen (good enough for me...), the radiator guard that I think it´s a must when driving on the country roads, and also have done the seat with gel inserts that makes a bit more confortable the driving but also elevates the seating position in 3 cms and thats why I have to get the higher screen... Keep the good job and thanks for the reviews!
You do NOT need to remove the fender or the hugger to fit the Pyramid expansions!!!! I have fitted them to three KTMs and my Tracer 9 GT just adding them to the bike. Easy peasy! Surprised you don't mention a Pyramid Fenda Extenda Extra! If you are really touring it is an ABSOLUT MUST for this bike and light years better than the short extends fenda. it also nicely integrates into the bike and does not look cheesy. Best accessory I've installed yet.
I have the tracer 2015 abs version. I have a ram ball mount plate that is mounted under your windscreen, with the tomtom power cable. works a treat. Crash bungs are a a mustm I have them fitted handle bars , wheel bolts, frame, engine guards. inovve power hub one but version two is now available, thjis kit allows you splice into the bikes power cables ones and everything else connects to the power hub, no power goes to devices till the bike has started up.Heated grips, ermax touring wind screen, quadlock universal pro mount with vibration dampner for my mobile. After market Rider and pillion seats, Innovve K2 camera system. and a gps from moni moto. original panner case mount( ugly but fuctional) sw motech pro panniers, when neeter sw-Motech top box mount plate with a top box bag instead of a plastic case.
Great video! As soon as I got my T9GT I immediately went looking for an Eazi-grip dealer in the Netherlands. Since they had delivery times of months, I ordered directly from the UK. Now to find some time to install the screen protectors! Also, still looking for some accessories for my own, like the MRA sport screen, tankpads, side pads for the tank, a side stand extender, and MAYBE a topcase! But your videos have helped me a lot, deciding whether to buy it or not, and finding great extras for it
Just today I got crash bars from Hepco & Becker, they look minimalistic and offer the opportunity to use small crashbar bags, giving you extra space for equipment on long journeys, which is nice. I also have issues with the OEM windscreen (I'm 173cm or 5'8), the turbulence is really really bad on highways even with earplugs... So apart from the crashbars I also got Puig touring windscreen. I'm really excited to try that out since many riders had good reviews on it. I can always ride without a windshield if it doesn't work I guess. Thanks for the update on T9, your reviews actually tipped me over the edge to go and actually buy it. Loving the bike so far except for the windscreen and perhaps the cheap license plate holder (just cosmetics, so...). I actually like the displays unlike many people. Cheers
Thanks for the video. 😀 I love my Tracer 9GT, and I like almost everything about it, understanding no bike is perfect. Windscreens- I have never met one I like, and have fabricated one for the T9GT that is as low possible and still cover the instruments. Unless there are heavy crosswinds, it is pretty silent. Yes, I get more air, but it is clean air. I am probably colder in winter than someone with a tall windscreen, but heated jacket and gloves I am fine and will take that trade-off.
In 2019 I reviewed the Tracer 900 GT. I found that the screen deflected air over my head without issue. The problem I had was that I got whacked on the shoulders by air coming through the cut outs on the side of the screen. After a lot of research into the options for touring bikes in my price bracket, I plumped for the 2021 9 GT, thinking the screen was a small price to pay, but in anticipation of it being a problem ordered an Ermax touring screen before the bike even arrived. I have never ridden the bike with the Ermax screen attached. I have no problem whatsoever with the standard screen. It's nothing like the previous model. I have fitted the Ermax one over winter to see if it changes anything at all, but it may only be aesthetics as it's tinted. We will see. I have no issue with the seat either. I need a rest before my bottom does. And... I like the dash... not bothered about connectivity. I have a helmet that does all that. BUT Since buying the bike in August, I have had some nightmares. 1. Throttle cutting out... First time Yamaha said they wouldn't do anything unless it happened again.... but after the third time, mid overtake, I played merry hell and eventually had the throttle sensor, throttle bodies and injector bank replaced. I haven't done enough miles since to guarantee it is fixed. 2. When adding a radiator guard, one bolt was SO tight that undoing it split the flange on the side of the radiator, costing me £300 for a new one. Irony. 3. When changing the radiator found missing washers and rubber bungs... whether never there or dealer had removed forvsome reason and not replaced, who knows...
Thanks so much for the info, and really sorry to hear about the problems... I hope the throttle's sorted out! We've already shot the conclusion video, and did discuss fuelling issues, but I hadn't heard of anything this bad. Was the bike brand new? Just wondering if a previous owner had fitted a rad-guard, then too it off before selling it. All the best, John
@@bennettsbikesocial th-cam.com/video/DcRiYOOxbqU/w-d-xo.html My first proper ride on the 9GT. In spite of the problems which I HOPE are resolved, it is still a superb thing.
Not read all the comments so sorry if this is a repeat, good review BTW, how about tank protectors? also how about doing a wind tunnel with the different screens and some smoke to show the air flow, that would be cool.
The budget didn't stretch to a wind tunnel, but hopefully one day! Personally I never other with tank protectors as I don't tend to scratch the tank with my kit. If I did, I'd then stick a protector over it! Cheers, John
Just demoed a Tracer 9GT yesterday and while the bars were doable, I'd definitely prefer them to be higher. My arms were fairly stretched and straightened out whenever I tried to get more upright. I suppose the idea is to get you in to a very slight (sporty) lean, which when done the bars are perfectly fine. I myself have been spoiled with nice high bars on my 701 Superrmoto and a recently demoed Tuareg 660, both of which allow me to sit completely upright with no lean and still have a nice relaxed reach to the bars. If I end up getting a Tracer, I am absolutely getting risers as I do not like having any kind of lean in my sitting position on my bikes these days. For reference, I am 5'11" or so.
How about a camera for insurance purposes or just to capture any interesting events. You can wire them into the bike and they start recording automatically when the bike is turned on.
Both front fender extender and rear hugger are absolutely worth it. However, one needs to understand that completely eliminating road crap in the rear is IMPOSSIBLE. Ok? Not possible. Alright, now that you accepted this fact you will be grateful for this thing because it reduces the amount of crap so much that you actually don't care about it anymore and you don't feel that have to wash the bike immediately. Believe me, you want this.
Great Fan of the channel. Closely monitor Tracer 9 videos and review. Need help please. Got Tracer 9gt, absolutely love it (6 months, 20K km). Since i'm very short ordered with OEM lowering kit. Expected to get low suspension + shorter kickstand (heard that how BMW do lowering kits), but the kickstand was the with original length. The bike is very upright when on side stand. This is causing me issues, when riding with my wife, it is very hard to open the kickstand as it scrapes the asphalt. Ordered new OEM kickstand and i want it shortened. Question: The OEM lowering kit shortens the seat height with 18mm, how much should i shorten the kickstand?
I haven't tried them, but I do like axillary lights - I have used the Denali D2s on a few bikes and really rate them. If the Yamaha ones are fairly priced, I'd go for it!
I have a Tracer 9 GT & my accessorizing is....almost always looking at Yamaha UK/EU plus UK & European retailers & wondering "Why the hell can't I get THAT over here?" Yes, I live in America, where Yamaha don't seem to realise that they sell the Tracer. Comfort Seat? Sure.....except we don't have any in stock. Have you tried Canada? Top Box? Occasionally....but rarely & don't ask for a mounting plate. USB Port?...."Yamaha US is interested in your feedback & we will respond shortly" (That was 8 months ago.) I very nearly bought a Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro instead. Launched about the same time at the T9GT the list of accessories for the Tiger 900 in the US is very, very comprehensive & they're actually available! Perhaps Yamaha should go back to basics & do what all Japanese bike makers used to do when they first started......copying Triumph!
Incredibly well produced video! Running the risk of being crucified by TH-cam but always wondered.. do I “need” a rad guard? I wonder how many people have road based rad issues from not having a guard. Has Bennett’s done a video on this?
I haven't, sorry. Anecdotally, I've heard of a stone damaging a radiator on the road just once - it doesn't seem common at all outside of the track (or off-road). Having said that though, I still put one on! Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial no worries. Just wondered it was one of the must haves that maybe isn’t all that much of a must have! I’ve always used one so far!
I am 5 7 with a shark spartan helmet, I honestly can't ride with the original screen for more than about 20 mins before i get a headache from the buffeting messing my vision - i have tried 4 different screens the Ermax short and the MRA Vario seem the best.
Only had MI e a month, maybe 500 miles so far, a lot of freeway time. At 5'9, I get no buffeting, but my helmet gets a lot of wind noise (helmet issue, not bike). I would like to do d a seat that is just a bit narrower, and bars that angle my hands toward me a bit more.
You failed to put black silicone under the OEM fender when you added the new one so that you would not have the mud slurry drooling down on top of the fenda extender.
Over the generations of the Tracer, they haven’t resolved the issue of the poor screen and the fact the exhaust headers look rubbish after a short space of time.
I agree with you and the issue with the screen. I have an MRA Vario fitted now (had to import it due to crap Yamaha US support) & its better, a lot less buffeting & slightly less noise. I'm 6'3" BTW. I still hear A LOT of either induction roar or exhaust noise. Can anyone comment on the noise after fitting a conventional exhaust? (ie such as Akrapovic) This would put the noise far behind the rider instead of right underneath.
Wow - an impressive eye for detail... Thank you! I'll be putting out a video about it (not on here of course) as it took me a long time to decide to go for it, so I want to cover off the concerns I had.

I love the Tracer, right from the first model, but I have not been able to get on with any of their seats. They used to be (in my bum’s opinion) like sitting on a piece of wood. The latest seats are a big improvement, but I found that they are angled too much, resulting in pushing my you know what’s against the tank all the time. Is this just me, or do other Tracer 9 owners/riders also experience this. I’d love to get the opinions of others. I’d also love to hear if anyone has changed the seat, and what they changed to. Thanks, and ride safe everyone.
Great video! I would suggest to your friend to avoid overloading of this toolbox OEM arrangement; it only supports the fore end of the case, could break if some force would be applied to the rear. I driver a T9 and have istalled Shad top box system, which looks much stronger..
Top work as per usual! Have to say i own a GSA and the mod i've done are pratically the same you did on the Yamaha... on the air/gel seat, i've tried it some years ago... and i too did not get along, i got a detached feeleing, did't like it.
John, you say no shock-sock because of moisture. Is that because of the near-horizontal angle of the shock on the Tracer, or a comment on the shock sock in general? (just wondering, because I had one on my Crosstourer for about 6 years with no moisture probs, but that's almost vertical)
Hi, just got a new tracer and bought a few of the mods you suggest. Can’ t see how to get the plastic bungs off front fender to fit the extender. Can you help?
I’ve had my 2021 Tracer 9 GT for 2 months now, and loving it. Any thoughts on the value of having a radiator guard? If a random stone or bolt etc is kicked up by the front wheel or other vehicle and puts a hole in the radiator, that’s a tow truck, so I’m thinking maybe it’s good insurance. Also, I bought the GIVI touring screen, which is noticeably higher than the OEM screen, but still not perfect. Still wind noise and some buffering. I’m 184cm / just over 6ft.
Great video ! I’ve just place an order for a new tracer and being on the test ride I’ve had this bad experience regarding the windshield hence now I’m researching, What would you recommend as I am 5’7” and I get a lot of buffeting….
The MRA Vario really does improve greatly for me, still little air going through but no buffeting and good overall protection,... and looks great in light smoke. Not cheap though.I am 5.7 too.. haven't tried short screen...
Theoretically you could still have a stone hit the rad. It's rare though either way. Having said that, I tend to fit them to my bikes, and the race teams use them. Cheers, John
I think that tank grips are missing in this video, I installed them on my tracer 9. In less than 1000Km already some scratches appeared. I also would like to install crash bar. I think the SW-Motech model fits and look good with the bike Anyway compliments for your videos, especially for this bike, really appreciated. Greetings from Italy
Has anyone replaced the ugly stock exhaust which quickly becomes discoloured and grimy looking? The Akraprovic replacement exhaust in the Yamaha accessories is quite expensive and it extends as a traditional muffler on the right of the rear wheel, attached to the rear peg mount. There's a video on TH-cam comparing the sounds of various replacements incl. the stock exhaust and the Akraprovic looks tasteful and sounds meaty without being the hooligan.
Can't really see much point in a more free-flowing air filter; while the closed loop should handle it in the main, I'd be concerned about the fuelling leaning up and really, there's just no need to tune the motor as it has a great mid-range. None of the owners I spoke to had done any engine mods, but we do have dyno figures in the next video... cheers, John
Awesome video again guys! Just subbbed. I saw some Nose / Beaks being sold for the front of the Tracer 9 GT. 1. Do you know anyone who has fitted that? Does it look good? 2. Does that help with buffeting in anyway?
Not sure where you're getting your prices from as the Yamaha dealer prices are far more expensive than you quote. That £36.20 for the backrest is over £50 on the website. As for screens, the MRA Touring Vario is by far the best screens for a number of bikes.
@@dougiequick1 Do you expect the Tracer to have wonderful brakes, like say a Ducati Multistrada? Its brakes are totally serviceable and very much "on par" with say the Triumph Tiger 850, BMW F900 etc. Its not a 20k bike tho, so no its not BremB0 Ultramasterdope edition brakes. Even on track its fine, more agressive pads would be good if you were really pushing. But at that point i'd start to wonder why i was on a tracer lol.
Since my front pads were all but totally worn out by 8k miles (they maybe had 500 miles left in em) so since I had to replace them anyway I went with one of the EBC sintered HH options and I have to say they feel more cofidece inspiring, I also picked up a 2023 MT10 for my canyon carving and again the brakes were a little lack luster so I just went ahead and put better pads on that one too ....this time I chose the much praised SBS RST Sintered Brake Pads (634RST) road and track pads and they really DO make a difference! I might buy the SBS RST pads for the Tracer 9 next time I need pads for that one too! Although now that it is not my canyon bike the EBCs will likely last a very long time ...The EBCs are plenty good enough though I would not bother until they too are worn out.
Last thing i would do was not to be able to ride long distances But good luck riding across europe with a backpack At least you'll look cool doing it ;)
As always a great review I don’t even have a tracer and still watched it and enjoyed it great honest job as always . I’ve moved from Bennetts for insurance this year but think I’m going to pay for bike social 🏍👍👍

Fantastic video. Thanks for the extended focus on the windscreens. Many reviewers spend so little time discussing the aerodynamics of a motorcycle, but it is so important for an enjoyable, comfortable ride.
Thanks very much! Cheers, John
waiting for delivery of my tracer in 1-2 weeks this video came spot on ! great job
Brilliant... enjoy! Cheers, John
Best mod I've done to my Tracer - Sargent rider and pillion seats
One of the first things I did to my '21 Tracer 9GT is to install a four terminal fuse block under the passenger seat that is fed by a diode protected relay switched by the lower accessory port. #30 12V input on the relay is fed from a 20A fused lead from the (+) battery terminal. This allows for easy application of 12V accessories such as heated gear, loud horn, heated seat, etc.
Nicely done!
I keep meaning to add a headlight switch. I hate that modern motorcycles mandate headlight is on whenever key is on. When/If the battery eventually is near the end just having the lights off might make the difference beween starting and failing to start. Or there could be situations like in a campground where you dont want to disturb anyone with uneeded running lights ....just would like to have the same option I have with my 4 wheel vehicles to turn the dam lights OFF if I want to
Another excellent and informative video 👍
As an overview, I’ve had my Tracer 9 GT since September 21; where it replaced my previous generation 2018 900 GT.
The changes I have found most useful are:
This is absolutely outstanding info, thanks SO much Ed!
@@bennettsbikesocial No worries 👍
Great comments Ed, given me some more to think about. I am also looking at fitting the Yamaha USB socket (to that flimsy mount!). I think there is an aux cable to connect it to behind the left front fairing (left when viewing bike from rear). Having looked at the fairing, I cant quite see how it comes off - any tips?
@@roybailey4529 Hi Roy, I can’t put pictures on here, but essentially you (looking from the front - and this is from memory I’m afraid!):
Excellent info - thanks very much! Cheers, John
Madstad windscreens are the way to go if you are looking for a touring screen for sure
Put the huggers and Rad guard on mine, but the most effective thing that I have added is the shock shield.
Automatic chain oiler, totoro or scottoiler. No mote fiddleing with, the chain so often😁
Just found it here www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-Tracer-900-GT-2018-2019-2020-2021-Tracer-9-High-Level-Mount-Sat-Nav-GPS-/203076846886?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0
I guess it's printed from PETG or something other than PLA, which could soften in the heat.
Cheers for the MRA review - I've linked it in the written article too, which will update on Monday.

Are you sure it was the Pyramid? Mine didn't have rivets.

I have the front and rear "Fenda Extender" and think they do a good job
I also have the SW Motech PRO tank bag system on two of my bikes and it's really useful and easy to fit. A great mod!
Good call on the key! Cheers, John
Thanks very much, and thanks for sharing your mods. All the best, John
a company in England makes special navigation mounts, so the navigation is very high and visible, I bought one, its really working well
Yes, thanks - it's linked in the description. Cheers, John

Now to find some time to install the screen protectors! Also, still looking for some accessories for my own, like the MRA sport screen, tankpads, side pads for the tank, a side stand extender, and MAYBE a topcase! Got a heated seat and it's been fantastic
Was the heated seat from Yamaha?
Anyone tried Givi crash bars , looks like they give more protection than others on the market ?
I just added them on my ‘17 and they look great without being too bulky. I’m hoping you never have to test them, but i think they’ll do the job
@@Truth.Notlies thanks for the reply 😊 , had the bike stolen tho 😔🤬
Thank you for that and summary! Great work!

Cheers
That's great, thank you! Cheers, John
I always try to buy Uk products and have fender extender, hugger extender and tinted screen all from Uk manufacturers including Pyramid Plastics 👍
BUT
Since buying the bike in August, I have had some nightmares.
PS I'm just shy of 5'11, 31" inside leg, 13 stone and average build.
Thanks so much for the info, and really sorry to hear about the problems... I hope the throttle's sorted out! We've already shot the conclusion video, and did discuss fuelling issues, but I hadn't heard of anything this bad.

The budget didn't stretch to a wind tunnel, but hopefully one day! Personally I never other with tank protectors as I don't tend to scratch the tank with my kit. If I did, I'd then stick a protector over it! Cheers, John
Quick question, did any of you felt the need for handlebar risers?
I'm 5'10" snd think I would want to lower the bars a bit.
They should fit a rad guard as standard it's the first thing I put on my tracer
How about a camera for insurance purposes or just to capture any interesting events. You can wire them into the bike and they start recording automatically when the bike is turned on.

1rst gen kawasaki versys gets my vote for best ever. i have owned over 100 streetbikes and currently have a fj09 it is not a bad bike
I have a pyramid on my Versys 650, excellent bit of kit
Great vid, thanks for that. What about the fog lights from Yamaha. What do you think, do or don't?
USB Port?...."Yamaha US is interested in your feedback & we will respond shortly" (That was 8 months ago.)
I very nearly bought a Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro instead. Launched about the same time at the T9GT the list of accessories for the Tiger 900 in the US is very, very comprehensive & they're actually available! Perhaps Yamaha should go back to basics & do what all Japanese bike makers used to do when they first started......copying Triumph!
Hope the imports improve soon! Cheers, John

Spot lights I'm after. Can't seem to get them on the 22 model.
How is it compared to Kawa Versys 1000? Really deciding between those two for rides with a pillion
The Versys is the smoother, more refined option, and bigger for a pillion.
I am 5 7 with a shark spartan helmet, I honestly can't ride with the original screen for more than about 20 mins before i get a headache from the buffeting messing my vision - i have tried 4 different screens the Ermax short and the MRA Vario seem the best.
Glad you found a solution, and that it ties in with what we found. Cheers! John
The headers do clean up fine - I just haven't attacked mine. Si did his and they look much better... that's in the next video. Cheers, John

I would suggest to your friend to avoid overloading of this toolbox OEM arrangement; it only supports the fore end of the case, could break if some force would be applied to the rear. I driver a T9 and have istalled Shad top box system, which looks much stronger..
Nice video! Thank you for your tips!
Thanks for watching! All the best, John
Love the bike…just can not get past the split dash. Looking at the Moto Guzzi V100.
Top work as per usual! Have to say i own a GSA and the mod i've done are pratically the same you did on the Yamaha... on the air/gel seat, i've tried it some years ago... and i too did not get along, i got a detached feeleing, did't like it.
Cheers! The air seats do need to be barely inflated. All the best, John
John, you say no shock-sock because of moisture. Is that because of the near-horizontal angle of the shock on the Tracer, or a comment on the shock sock in general?
(just wondering, because I had one on my Crosstourer for about 6 years with no moisture probs, but that's almost vertical)
I was advised by K-tech to avoid them altogether, but sounds like yours was fine. Cheers, John
It's unlikely you'll hole a rad, but I do tend to put them on my own bikes, just in case! Get a good one and they look cool too. Cheers, John
Hi. I would like you to review crash bars. Sw motech, vs original vs givi vs heed etc.
Did anybody upgrade their lights? I never liked the 1 low beam, 1 high beam set up
Great video !
I’ve just place an order for a new tracer and being on the test ride I’ve had this bad experience regarding the windshield hence now I’m researching,
What would you recommend as I am 5’7” and I get a lot of buffeting….
My favourite of what I tried was the short screen
The MRA Vario really does improve greatly for me, still little air going through but no buffeting and good overall protection,... and looks great in light smoke. Not cheap though.I am 5.7 too.. haven't tried short screen...
@@patrickrosello9583 thank you,
Will place an order for both to be fair and then I can have what to choose from 🤣🤣
Great video! Thanks 👍
Have you tried a different exhaust system for the tracer 900 gt ?
Can anyone comment on the need for a radiator guard? Or does a pyramid front extended solve most of that issue?
Theoretically you could still have a stone hit the rad. It's rare though either way. Having said that, I tend to fit them to my bikes, and the race teams use them. Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial I took it for a good run on the weekend, and there's three fins bent. Definitely going to throw a rad guard on!
I find my standard screen good I'm 5'6 only a foot taller than a dwalf and it's great
I think that tank grips are missing in this video, I installed them on my tracer 9. In less than 1000Km already some scratches appeared.
I also would like to install crash bar. I think the SW-Motech model fits and look good with the bike
Anyway compliments for your videos, especially for this bike, really appreciated. Greetings from Italy
Thanks very much! I haven't had any scratches yet, but a couple of people have mentioned them now. Cheers, John
does anybody have a view on fitting an aftermarket under engine exhaust like a LeoVince ~ does the engine need re-mapping
I love Yamaha, they need a Drive shaft to be added and it will be perfect and I will buy one.
Buy a bicycle gel shorts for long trips, I find it better than any other mod.
Good call! I'm going to try that. Do they look weird under your kit? Cheers, John
Então para si qual é a melhor tela para a Tracer 900?
Has anyone replaced the ugly stock exhaust which quickly becomes discoloured and grimy looking? The Akraprovic replacement exhaust in the Yamaha accessories is quite expensive and it extends as a traditional muffler on the right of the rear wheel, attached to the rear peg mount. There's a video on TH-cam comparing the sounds of various replacements incl. the stock exhaust and the Akraprovic looks tasteful and sounds meaty without being the hooligan.
Which one should i go for
Bmw s 1000 xr
Or
This motorcycle mate?
S1000XR Gen 1, except it's a bit tall for me
Yamaha oem comfort seat upgrade?
I didn't feel any benefit on the launch so didn't bother, plus nobody I spoke to had bought it. Cheers, John
Any air filter , iridium plugs? I like EBC front brake pads.
A more free-flowing air filter also means more dust gets into the engine...
Tank pads/ grips
Awesome video again guys! Just subbbed.
I saw some Nose / Beaks being sold for the front of the Tracer 9 GT.
1. Do you know anyone who has fitted that? Does it look good?
2. Does that help with buffeting in anyway?
Great video, thanks. Does any Tracer 9 owner know if the centre stand from their 2021/2 bike can fit the MT-09? Thanks!
Hi
What’s the best screen for a Tracer 700. I’m 6’
One of the first things I did to my 2021 GT was to get shot of it.
Not sure where you're getting your prices from as the Yamaha dealer prices are far more expensive than you quote. That £36.20 for the backrest is over £50 on the website.
As for screens, the MRA Touring Vario is by far the best screens for a number of bikes.
Best screen I’ve ever had was an after market screen on one of my FJR1300’s, think it’s was Puig. Mind you the screen is electric which helps 👍😂
Where bias the kitchen sink?
What is being used to support the bike?
An Abba Sky Lift stand
Pretty much all reviews dis the brakes as being lack luster so I was hoping you tried various aftermarket pads to try to remedy....but nope?
I didn'treally have a problem with them.
@@bennettsbikesocial good to know! but is "no problem" the same as "wonderful brakes"?
Last thing I would fit on my bike is top box. such a old men's bike look
Possibly, but its a lot easier to filter in traffic with a box instead of panniers......but I value function over form! 😁
Last thing i would do was not to be able to ride long distances
But good luck riding across europe with a backpack
At least you'll look cool doing it ;)
@@Surpriseify Idon't carry back pack I used panniesrs and tail bag
I've changed the tyres to Road Pilot 5's. Fabulous and confidence inspiring especially in the wet.
Still no conclusion for a windscreen 😒😪 constant headache once I go above 150km
Have you tried a lower screen? Try taking the screen off if not, to see how it might feel
is that Lamb Chops Rides garage ??
He wishes!
Very informative video
As always a great review I don’t even have a tracer and still watched it and enjoyed it great honest job as always . I’ve moved from Bennetts for insurance this year but think I’m going to pay for bike social 🏍👍👍
Cheers! John
Long term review coming soon?
This is part of a series of videos about the bike - you can catch them all in the end-screen. Cheers, John
Thank you
Hi i want to buy long windshield can you please send im from Asaam,India
What are you leaning on ?
The stand the bike's on - an Abba Skylift. It let's me move the bike around easily when shooting.
I am 5.7 and the wind buffering is so bad that I have damage my ear during long ride at average speed of 150km FYI I am using shoei Gt Air 2
Oh no! Are you not wearing ear-plugs?!
Lol why can't Yamaha figure out windscreens for this thing?
