  • With well over 100 aircraft both narrowbody and widebody, Ethiopian Airlines is Africa's largest airline by fleet size. The carrier has an extremely diverse collection of aircraft which it uses to connect passengers from the Americas, Europe, and other parts of the world, to Africa, and vice versa. The fleet has grown slightly in the past year, so let's look at its current state in this video.

They do a Dublin to Chicago route which I found out about by looking at the flight radar 24 app. During (Irish) president Higgins' first term of office he went on an official state visit to Ethiopia and there were talks of regular flights between the countries and I suspect that's also how Dublin to Chicago with Ethiopian airlines rather than Aer Lingus came about.

  • @Adrenaline_chaser

It's incredible that they have such big fleet 🤩
My concern however is that they have simply too many different types of aircrafts! The maintenance cost of all of those aircrafts must be quite high😬
Now, I can understand for the narrow-body planes but for the wide-body segment why did they decide to order both a350 & b787 instead of ordering only one type? This in principle should have granted them more bargaining power in the acquisition process and, in the long run, save money on maintenence too.
Fleet commonality is obviously impossible for such a national carrier serving so many destinations but surely the types of aircrafts operated should be as low as possible, to save on maintenance costs but also upon the initial acquisition cost.

The 737 family has the same range but compared to the A320, it is easier to maintain because it’s low to the ground model allows it to refuel and repair at smaller regional airports which are common in Africa, given the A320 is higher to the ground, it needs more equipment to repair and refuel, in addition Ethiopian Airlines has operated 737s before, this allows them to make a smooth transition to the type.
