Flying Ethiopian Airlines - How They Became the Biggest in Africa?

- I flew on an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787 from Vienna to Addis Ababa. Find out Ethiopian Airlines latest onboard product in both Business Class and Economy class. The flight was overnight and took 5 hours and 45 minutes. Before landing, a beautiful sunrise greeted all passengers. Join me for landing inside the cockpit of Boeing 787.
After landing, I toured the passenger terminal and up to 10,000 passengers in the morning transit at Addis Ababa Bole Airport making it the busiest hub in Africa.
I was given a tour of the Ethiopian Airlines Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility where a Boeing 767 is undergoing cargo conversion. Then I went inside an Ethiopian A350 passenger freighter full of cargo in the cabin. Last, I went on a day tour in Addis Ababa city.

As a South African I am proud of what Ethiopian Airlines achieved. Our SAA airlines used to be the best in Africa and it is one of the oldest airlines in the world. Since ANC came to power they have bankrupted SAA and many state institutions. No more railways, electricity supply is random and country as a whole is being mismanaged. We almost have no hope for the future. SA had so much potential to become a world player and now our government and presidents are an embarrasment. Sam did not actually report on how Ethiopian Airlines became Africa's best airline but I am sure it is because the people in charge are honourable, and truly take pride of their country and what they have achieved. They are building their nation to be the best in Africa. If only our government can do the same and stop its corruption and selfish actions. Well done Ethiopia! Would love to visit your country and learn from you.

To answer you question as an Ethiopian, the reason Ethiopian Airlines is successful is because even though it's state owned, the successive governments since it's foundation have left it independent. Even at the time of the communist government 40 years ago, Ethiopian Airlines was allowed to operate independently. Sadly, the new government we have is going to ruin it since just like the ANC, it's interfering with the airlines management.

I flew first class on Ethiopian from Los Angeles to Cape Town, South Africa. Via Dublin, Addis then Cape Town. Excellent food, excellent service, excellent training and safety (I don't blame the 737 Max accident on Ethiopian). Agree, the footwell was small and at 6' 3" and size 12 US feet I couldn't lie all the way flat on the 787. From Addis to Cape Town was on a 777 which was older but much larger/longer first class seat. Also, the best coffee I have ever had was from Ethiopia (both on the plane and in the Addis lounge. A must try! Thanks for bringing back the memories, Sam!

I guess you and I have watched different clips because his tone and narrative sounded more negative than anything to me.
I watched the whole thing and he mentioned how poor Ethiopia is and was several times and wants to know the success of the airlines but not even once mentioned how.
I don't even think he cared to know that, the whole video was more confusing. What is the goal of this video? To see how Ethiopia has the most successful airlines in Africa or just to talk about why poor country in Africa has an airlines like this?

First of all, his question is valid and reasonable. Secondly, Why are you lying? I've lived in Ethiopia for over 27 years and yes the culture is beautiful but the nation is absolutely dog shit. One of THE worst places to live and work period. Aside from problems with it's economy, education, transit and health care, there is a f**king civil war going on right now so what are you talking about? You can paint a false image all you want and I have slowly discovered that Ethiopians are extremely proud and that leads them to be liars. I've seen this with co workers, and friends and they will never admit to something being wrong in their lives or their nation because of their mind set, but you and I both know that any Ethiopian would leave Ethiopia if they could. That is a fact. Stop lying, learn to ask for help as a society and maybe your nation will survive. Side note: Emirates is a better airline. It is cheaper and it has better service. Only problem is a transit. Aside from this, it is definitely better in every way.
As a South African, I envy how efficient and well run Ethiopian Airline is. Our national carrier (South African Airways) has been run so badly that we simply cannot compete against Ethiopian. In fact, Ethiopian offered to buy our airline a few years ago when our debt was too steep. Looking forward to watching your Cape Town trip next.

I flew them this summer from Vienna to Addis on the 787 , then on the A350 to Joberg in Business class. The crew was friendly and provided excellent service. There was too much food! This is an organization to be proud of.
I was in economy class. You’re right about the food part. They gave us so much food that it literally wouldn’t fit into our small tables. I ended up spilling my drink and a bit of my food.
A lot of people don’t know this but a African American named John Robinson establish a pilot training school in Ethiopia. After arriving in 1935, Robinson initially conducted pilot training at a recently opened officer training school close to Addis Ababa. He also played a role in the foundation of Ethiopian Airlines. Most importantly In January 1935, Robinson announced his intentions to volunteer to defend Ethiopia in its ongoing conflict with Italy. Robinson was then named the commander of the Ethiopian Air Force.

It only works for the wealthy, because if you get a flying job making over 100k / year, you never keep up with inflation.

Had a great flight in first class from Cape Town to Addis Ababa and they quickly put me up in a wonderful hotel for the night before my flight to the Seychelles the next day. Was very happy with my experience a few weeks ago!

I'm originally from Guinea, after watching this video i know it's a great airline because i work on this converted cargo Boeing 767 and 737 in the us and to see an African country compete with the leaders in the aviation, make me very proud.

Amazing video! The current success of Ethiopian is not from yesterday. They have been working on it for a long time. I remember taking a flight from Addis to Khartoum back in the 90s and was really impressed with the service and new Boeing 737. It was Egyptair that was leading in the region at the time, but now ET have well overpassed them. Ethiopian pilots and their academy always had a good reputation. Ethiopians themselves are a hard working nation with clever people inspite of the economic situation. Still, their GDP per capita has increased by 3 times during the last 11 years. Hope the issues with their probably closest brothers the North Sudanese get resolved very soon for the region to prosper once again. This part of Africa is quite amazing.

Ethiopian Airlines is the epitome of an African success story and testimony to the fact that Africa is not a poor continent. Ethiopian Airlines has more aircraft in it's fleet than Swiss Airlines Scandinavian Airlines Services Air Austria or Air Belgium. Yet it provides the same top notch service as Singapore Airlines. Concurrently Ethiopia has 25 mega infrastructure projects which it is rolling out as we speak. Ethiopia is the role model for many African as well as Caribbean countries that have African roots. I remember that hi-jacking when the pilot crash landed in the ocean after running out of fuel. Although it was a terrible incident, I think it really helped Ethiopian Airlines onto the global map.. because given those circumstances, that pilot did such an amazing job.. and many people around the world respect what he did and the eventual outcome ( as bad as it was ).. It could've been much worse.
Also that issue with Boeing 737 MAX MCAS system where Boeing tried to blame the dead pilots for the crash when it was in fact Boeing's fault. Although they did eventually admit to it.. the damage to Boeing had already been done.. whereas Ethiopian airlines once again redeemed itself.
I will NEVER trust Boeing again after how they treated Ethiopian ( and Lion Air ) pilots. I'm glad Boeing are facing the consequences for their actions ( trust can only be regained if those responsible are prosecuted.. ) which hasn't happened yet ) ..After both those incidents Ethiopian Airlines have come out better, stronger and are much loved by the flying public.. Keep up the great work.

In March 2018, we flew Business Class from DUB to ADD in an Ethopian 787-8 and then from ADD to CPT in a 777-300ER. Wonderful flights with excellent food and drink. The cabin service was first class. All together, a great experience.
I have been on the Ethiopian 767, 777, 737-800, 737Max, 787 and A350.
Very nice airline.
