  • The African aviation market has seen plenty of change in the past few years.
While South African Airways has struggled to stay afloat, Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways have become stronger global competitors.
But how is each faring now in 2021? And which will ultimately succeed in becoming the dominant airline for the continent?

From a Kenyan brother, well done Ethiopian. You make an inspiring pacesetter. KQ, you need to pick up some pace, the pride of a continent is at stake. As for SAA, we can start with you just picking up... Africa is finally rising, and it would be such a downer to soar into this dazzling future, only to find our skies dominated by foreign airlines.

The big issue the narrator forgot to mention is Ethiopian Airlines has been profitable at least for the last decade ,while the other airlines have been losing money big time.On the last year Kenyan Airways lost the biggest amount of money ever in its company history.
The other thing is aircraft type , number, routes and cargo capability ,which especially save Ethiopian from losing money on the last Civid19 pandemic year.
Ethiopian Airlines is the only African operator which flies the ultramodern Airbus350-900 and Boeing 787-8 ,9 aircrafts. It has 9 B777F cargo planes for its freight routes and working on to launch The biggest and most modern airport in Africa .
Now since it already achieved the 2025 plan ,its planning to start Project 2035. with an aim to increase its fleet number to more than 200 young and ultramodern aircraft and give Qatar Airways ,Emirates and Turkish Airlines a big challenge ,at least on The African Market.
Anyway thanks for this nice Subsaharan Africa Airlunes comparism.

I'm Kenyan but I must say I've been impressed with Ethiopian Airlines. I realized that their foundation is more than just about profits. They are purpose driven and it shows in their extensive operations. If you look at their inner structures and policies. (The story of how the airline started says alot about where they are today and their philosophy)
Kenya airways has great potential, but is seriously affected by certain factors that I would rather not mention.
For both RSA and Kenya, it also seems to be a national problem that ends up affecting the airlines ultimately, but things are changing and will improve.

You dont just create all that withinn months, not to mention days. It takes alot of investment (both in terms of man power and financially), alot of commitment, it takes time.
Also, atleast withinn the airline, the investment and commitment, has to be done faithfully in whatever area is required. This is where I have a bone to pick with Kenya-airways. Again, that is my favorite airline, but certain things are...

Ethiopian runs a very efficient operation with ultra modern fleet ( A350s mostly & 787s) & have a great hub at Addis Ababa. People who used to fly to via Dubai or Doha to Africa now transit via Addis. The transit times ( connecting times) at Jommo Kenyata airport are often too long & the airport is old. Makes it less attractive. I hear Rwanda is not doing bad as well.

Every day at 12:00 am in a synchronized ballet all connected flights land in Lome new airport. And at 13:00 all connected flights take off to their respective destination including Ethiopian airlines connection to the US, and Addis Ababa.

I am a kenyan and it enjoys me to see Kenya Airways' plane land in JKIA especially the B787-8. But it really has to rework its strategies. Very interesting. The untapped potential within Africa is immense. Both from passengers outside the continent and within. That sets up the potential for both transcontinental carriers and smaller continental carriers to exploit. West Africa is painfully underrepresented. That said, the country Im reasonably well acquainted with, Ghana, is currently executing a program of major airport development. Kotoka in Accra is the major hub for West Africa with a new terminal while Kumasi and Tamale are both currently under development transforming them from small national airports into international airports. A plan exists to restart a govt owned Ghanaian carrier underwritten by EgyptAir, but ill believe that one when I see it. I can only see huge expansion within Africa economically which has to be good for the continent and air travel will follow on the back of this.

Ethiopian Airlines (ET) and Kenya Airlines (KQ), but dynamic Rwandair and Air Tanzania also, benefit much from the increasing development of trade and relations between India + China and Sub-Saharan Africa for which their hubs are ideally situated and from which they serve the whole of Sub-Saharan Africa. Whereas from Europe they are competive mostly only for East Africa.

This is of course on top of solid fares and route maps, plus in Europe, connections are plentiful with them having codeshare agreements with the Air France/KLM/Transavia group. That and also Air Mauritius is seriously under rated.

Alright, as I aviator, I can strongly agree that Ethiopian is the Pride of Africa
    Why may you ask?
Ethiopian airlines have cheap tickets ex ICN - NBO is one thousand dollars than other airlines. The service on Ethiopian is outstanding I'd say which is great for an airline. Ethiopian Airlines has massive fleet like a lot of aircrafts on service that KQ which has 32 Aircrafts on Service and less destinations which isn't great for an airline. For KQ, these days, they are striking a lot of pilots which they lose millions of KSH and dollars which can be heavily invested on flights nor fleet. Ethiopian has the largest fleet in Africa as an International airline which is very successful of them. As they put lower prices, it's a very successful technique as if you sell things cheap, you get a lot of customers which helps you your carrier and build up more until you earn lots of dollars.
Ethiopian Airlines - 16.8 billion USD per year
Kenya Airways - N/A but lost over $145M in 2021
This statistic shows that Ethiopian Airlines makes more revenue than Kenya Airways which makes Ethiopian Airlines successful airline.

No pandemic related lay-offs. So even if I don't have the figures for 2021, I can safely assume it's generating enough revenue to sustain itself in the business. Back in 2018 the airlines had a $3bn net profit. It's a government owned enterprise but there is a plan to privatize it. I think Ethiopian airlines should learn a lesson from Kenya.
