@@IonCosmina Can't wait! Currently using Resolve more, but I'm going to start with Final Cut soon. Unfortunately I still need Premiere for the occasional project and to keep those skills up.
@@sebastianquintanilladoming8807 Thanks! That's good to know. I see myself as eventually jumping between Resolve and FCP. Maybe I'll just stick to RAW on SSDs...
Hopefully this doesn’t seem a stupid question. I’ve just ordered one of these, and I’m wondering, can you just use it as an external monitor and record onto the camera’s memory as normal? I can’t quite work out the reason for recording onto memory in the monitor. I’m new to this type of thing, only had my Black magic 6k pro a week: Thanks
You kinda spent more than u should have for an externsl monitor. The hdmi out of bmpc6k is only hd for monitoring. A feelworld/smallhd/shinobi would’ve been sufficient for external monitoring. A 12g video assist is for cameras that can output raw so you can record in braw. It is also a very good external monitor but it comes with the recording bit. I guess you can use it to record in camera settings or have a preview but, mostly, you got a full meal when you only wanted a snack.
Hi. No LUTs that I’d use with Sigma fp. I will check for updates today and if I can find some I’ll let you know. I didn’t do a decent test but I do feel that the nits on the 12G need the two batteries. I am doing the ninja v vs 12G soon so I’ll do the tests.
I used this: SMALLRIG Articulating Magic Arm with Double Ballheads (1/4" Screw) Monitor Mount for Field Monitor, Lights, Audio Recorders - 2070. It also works with a: SmallRig Camera Magic Arm, Flexible Articulating Arm with 1/4” Screws, Field Monitor Mount with Dual Ballhead, Aluminum - 3873. They are pretty small and sturdy.
I’ve got the hot shoe adapter HU-11 that usually comes with the camera that secures the hdmi slot. I have a smallrig cage that has a cold shoe mount also. I use a smallrig clamp (www.amazon.com/SMALLRIG-Bracket-Samsung-SanDisk-Compatible/dp/B07X2PHMCF) and a phone holder to hold my 2.5 ssd caddy if necesary.
This is so good! I'm discovering all your videos and can see the work on them. One question, do you use the ef mount sigma 18-35? If so, what adapter do you use and how do you find shooting with it? I have just got and F3 and I'm slowly trying to put it to work. Thanks in advance!
Hi! Thank you. I never had the 18-35 from Sigma. It would be a shame to use it on full frame. I am using a sigma adapter from ef to l-mount for the fp. The ef lenses I got were used on a Canon c100 mk1. 18-35 would’ve been better for that super 35 system. Don’t know what you mean about F3. Is that a camera?
@@IonCosmina oh sh**. I was writing this coment to a previous video on my list! Don't know hoy it end up here! Yes the sony f3 is and old super 35 camera, a really nice one. And I'm trying to pair it to my EF sigma 18-35. Sorry for the nuisance. Great review either way!
Please (and sorry because I put the same question in another your topic-video) does Sigma FP may record SIMULTANEOUSLY Braw to card in Blackmagic video assist AND cdng to external disk via USB (or at least internally on card)? Of course, question is about safety of dual recording possibility. Thanks in advance for answer, I didn't find it nowhere, just Simga SEO mentioned it is possible during interview for NFilmSchool...
maybe nvme m.2 drive to the blackmagic. Then you dont need the ssd attachment cable. I have a lumix s5iix with m.2 drive mounted and am on the fence about a blackmagic 12g for braw. nice review
I did buy a nvme m.2 and a case. It gets really hot fast but it works. My point about the 2.5 sata3 was that they are really cheap media and they work fine. But m.2 is good too.
A smallrig arm mount that stretches. And I mount it sideways on the monitor so that makes enough space for the usb-c connection. The recorder has more holes to secure monitor arms.
Can I be recording CDNG inside the camera and just monitor the frame via VIDEO assist. And does ProRES HQ in video assist differs from ProRES in atoms ninja.
Prores the same in both recorders. Uou can record cdng and view it on any external monitor (setting will be hdmi out monitoring and you can choose to have info output as well)
I have several old 90s sd broadcast cameras. Can the blackmagic monitor take standard definition sdi signal and record it full hd? Or i have to upscale it in post?
@@IonCosmina Thank you for the fast reply. Well im not going to buy it before im sure. At least it works on pc, using obs studio. Sdi signal to usb, results are surprisingly good :)
@juku666 I think you can try at the shop. They might have a demo VA around so you can test it. Good to know that sd cameras are still useful. So sad to see tech becoming unusable.
That was a great video. I just ordered my 12G 5inch assist,I used to have the 7 inch 3G version but it was always such a pain to use due to the size. Do you know if you can actually record your computer's screen using the Blackmagic Video Assist? That would also double as a capture device for gaming
Sigma fp doesn’t have a legit log. So bmva can give a rec709 look to it. It’s kinda like having a LUT on. But if you import the footage in davinci, you can turn it in bmraw settings and it looks log and you can grade it as such.

@@IonCosmina thanks for your answer. i have the sigma fp and i was considering the blackmagic monitor too have a more accurate contrast/dynamic range preview, so i'm sad it's not possible. the image on the sigma fp is so ugly compared to the grading you can have in post. you really have to imagine the final image during the shooting.
We shoot with the bmva on the sigma fp. It is a getting used to process but it’s worth recording in bmraw compared to apple prores raw. CDNG is magnifique but it’s huge.
It’s just raw output. Switching color profiles gives a slight colour shift but they don’t impress like they do when shooting mov or 422 8 bit output. You can record prores with the color profiles baked in but you loose the 12 bit.
I set the sigma to output 422 8bits over hdmi and set the bm 12g to record prores. I prefer the neutral colour profile for this type of recording. But I mostly keep braw as my way of recording. Much better outcome :)
I have this recorder for a few years now and the monitor is not ruined. I bet there are some good screen shields out there though. I will buy one myself. From constant daily use, any recorder would have this issue.
@hazelnut49 I only compared it to Ninja V. There are 2 new ninjas out there and they might be good as well. But if you like Braw, this VA @ 5 inch category is the best. I’d pony up for the 7 inch for dual sd card recording(for safety) but I am happy with this one. Can’t use it with Sony for RAW but with the Sigma or any other that outputs to VA, is the thing.
I just tried HLG from an a7siii and it looks good on the monitor ( I’d say a bit more saturated than the monitor of the a7siii). It recorded in prores 422 and FCPX sees it as HDR.
@@IonCosmina sounds great so it doesnt just boost the SDR picture it seems that it displays the HDR10 PQ picture then? you could see higher luminance levels from specular highlights? they only way to be sure that it works is to buy it ;)

Thank you! The BMVA only lets you choose one recording media. Can’t back it up. Depending on the camera you’re using, you might be able to back up on the camera.
Still missing custom desqueeze and aspect ratio options to be 100 professionally usable ! please Blackmagic make it !
That is weird coming from them. Will check for updates.
Great mini-review. So would you say it's better to go with the more expensive 12G over the Ninja V specifically for the Sigma fp?
It’s a real fight between the ninja v and the 12g. It’s down to what nle you’re using. I will make a versus video soon.
To my workflow is better record on braw than prores(ninjaV) Also Resolve dont support prores raw
Still in love with FCPX way of editing. I'd shoot prores raw for most of the time just for the ease in FCPX. But somehow braw looks better.
