One thing that BRAW offers that very few people seem to realize is that you can trim your files and save them back to BRAW in Resolve (without any compromise or loss whatsoever), so you can minimize file size once your editing is done. It means you can easily record all day and fill up your 1 TB SSD if you need to.... then trim all the unnecessary moments and end up with only the ones that you need, and still have access to RAW data. Hi Mr Alex just wanted to ask a quick question. When recording with S5 &video assist in BRAW Will the output be the same as the BRAW from my BMPCC4K, given the the S5 will be using Panasonic and vlog colour science. any advice is appreciated. Thanks for you excellent videos
Does the Video Assist 12G provide SDI output feed while standing by and recording BRAW? The lack of output signal in ProRes RAW mode with Atomos Ninja V is a real dealbreaker that keep it sitting in my closet. Without an output feed, director's won't be happy.
I know this video is old but if i may ask, can you tell me how you get rid of the lense distortion in raw files? I downloaded blackmagic sample footage from their page and all the footage is terrible distorted because build in lense correction does not work with raw. i cant get it to look like the edited footage looks on their website.
Thanks for your excellent review Alex! What is the battery life of the S5 when your recording externally? Internal recording is supposed to give more or less 2h of continuous recording. I guess it's considerably longer when recording externally? Thanks! :)
Hey Alex, is this the same braw as you get out of the Bmpcc 4K and 6K, or will it be a little different because it’s using a different sensor on the S5?
Hi Alex, great video so far. i didn't understand one thing: if you use a SD to record from the monitor do you connect the drive to the monitor via USB-C or do you connect it to your camera? That was a little bit too fast for me in the video ;-) Thank you
Have you ever used it for anamorphic content? There is a weird problem only when using the ANAMOR crop mode and the footage presents sveral lines as if it were interlaced footage or something. You need to zoom to notice but is unacceptable. The stranhe thing is that this do not happens when using both full frame or aps-c modes... the airtfacts appears only when using the Anamorphic crop. This is something big... and both Panasonic and Bkackmagic needs to solve it quickly as this mode is a strong benefit that they promote.. And really, the result of the image with this "bug" is not udable in a professional work. This is when uou shoot Braw only, of course, and record in the video assist. If you use internal recording or normal output to record Prores or DNX the footage is ok.
I'm here but have absolutely no idea what the subject is! DaVinci for idiots is too advanced for me! (Hope u know I'm joking Alex....love your stuff even if I don't understand it!)
Thanks for the video. BTW I have a very similar run-and-gun-setup, but my Smallrig Micro-HDMI to HMDI (the same you have) broke after about 2 weeks, thankfully not taking the micro-HMDI on the camera with it. Still looking for a better solution for that.
It's always best to clamp down the microHDMI connected to the camera port. I don't use the micro to full adapters, I just clamp down really tight on my Fuji rig, it's still doing well.
@@neoterixx3440 Adding an adapter just adds another point of failure. Might as well just use a proper micro HDMI cable, clamp it properly, and bring cable backups.
These guys do a pretty good job of explaining the benefits of BRAW: th-cam.com/video/DxmJ1ds8X9s/w-d-xo.html Explaining the benefits was never the intention of this video, it was to answer the questions I received previously.
Hey mate I'm making a video ending with the Burn out video transition but how do I make it so instead of starting on the entire video how do I isolate the transition to a single item. im making a TH-cam like button and dont want the flames around the rest of the video just around a hand jpg
That's because the internal codecs are oversampled from the full sensor read (around 6k resolution), and since RAW images are supposed to be a pixel by pixel readout (no oversampling, no line skipping, no pixel binning) the camera has to crop to get that 4K image. Happens the same with the Blackmagic Cinema Pocket Camera 6K. Q5 and 12:1 BRAW compressions are so efficient that I wouldn't really worry about that! It's crazy the amount of 5.9K RAW footage you can get with a 100 US 500GB SSD!
Hey Alex, is it possible to record to an SSD direct to the S5 without recorder, like the Assist? For the life of me I can't seem to find any documentation, so trying to figure out why'd they'd include USB-C without that functionality.
The USB on the S5 is for charging and/or operating the camera with a power bank. I don't think any external monitor other than the Black Magic Video assist allows you to record on a SD card or via a USB - C SSD.

I thought HLG in lumix S5 is better than V-log, i didn't understand why they locked the picture profile to V-log only
Unfortunately the Sony A7S III is no supported camera. So I had to take the Ninja V, which causes other unexpected problems.
Great !! Thank you very much !!
Do you have (or is there) a comparison of the internal Panasonic 10-bit to the vlog with external BRAW for grading and composting?
are you able to power the monitor externally via a single NPF battery with 12v output? is it a must to put both the batteries on?
Great - THX!
Did the latency issues improve when recording to Braw? Thinking about building this set up but with the 5 inch assist
So you cant change the ISO with the BRAW coming from the S5?
Use exposure
Is 1080p Prores oversampled?
I'm here but have absolutely no idea what the subject is! DaVinci for idiots is too advanced for me! (Hope u know I'm joking Alex....love your stuff even if I don't understand it!)
Haha I appreciate you stopping by Steve 😊👍
Thanks for the video. BTW I have a very similar run-and-gun-setup, but my Smallrig Micro-HDMI to HMDI (the same you have) broke after about 2 weeks, thankfully not taking the micro-HMDI on the camera with it. Still looking for a better solution for that.
It's always best to clamp down the microHDMI connected to the camera port. I don't use the micro to full adapters, I just clamp down really tight on my Fuji rig, it's still doing well.
@@professionalpotato4764 how come its better? I'm not sure what to get.
@@neoterixx3440 Adding an adapter just adds another point of failure. Might as well just use a proper micro HDMI cable, clamp it properly, and bring cable backups.
@@professionalpotato4764 I understand now. I just placed an order for a clamp.
I was hoping for some of the examples of WHY or WHEN to use this setup? Seems like overkill to make a TH-cam video?
These guys do a pretty good job of explaining the benefits of BRAW: th-cam.com/video/DxmJ1ds8X9s/w-d-xo.html
Explaining the benefits was never the intention of this video, it was to answer the questions I received previously.
Would s1 ,s5 and s1h have same color and dr when recorded to BRAW since they have same sensor ??
Can you use this to record just prores? Does it still crop for 4k 24 if so?
Can you control Raw settings in preimere pro ??
Any chance to upload sample S5 5.9k braw files for test grading?
Hey mate I'm making a video ending with the Burn out video transition but how do I make it so instead of starting on the entire video how do I isolate the transition to a single item. im making a TH-cam like button and dont want the flames around the rest of the video just around a hand jpg
Can any Hdmi 2.0 work ? Or does it have to be short ?
Is there latency please
Is the 12:1 smaller file size than prores raw ?
Still the video is in SDR
Why not shoot in HDR?
Shame you can’t use 4k 24/25fps braw without crop as you can internally (4k 24/25 vlog for example)
Yeaaah it is strange. I'd like to see a 4k no crop 24/25 option as well.
It's crazy the amount of 5.9K RAW footage you can get with a 100 US 500GB SSD!
before new firmware update prores can use in s5 but after update no code support ... sad ...
Can any ssd work ?
