You reviewed an OBSOLETE model of the Blackmagic Video Assist. The 6G is no longer marketed, the current model is the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR. The 12G has UHS II SDXC card slots which have none of the compatibility issues you complained about (FYI, UHS II cards work in the earlier 3G and 6G models as well). In addition, the 12G has a USB-C port that records to the same SSD cards as the Ninja V. So in practice, the Video Assist has dual battery slots instead of an SSD slot, while the Ninja V has an SSD slot, but no provisions for batteries at all. The HUGE advantage of the Video Assist 12G is its 2500 nits HDR touchscreen, which leaves the Ninja V's 1000 nits Rec 709 screen in the shade. The Ninja V looks fine if you're NOT shooting in LOG or HDR Rec 2020 formats, i.e. legacy 1080p footage. But for 4K projects (especially if you need DCI), you're really shortchanging yourself if you shoot without an HDR monitor. The 5-inch Ninja V is a lightweight marvel for use with 30-minute-limit cameras, but it in no way competes with the pro features on the 7-inch Video Assist 12G.
Lish Lash Looks like to 6G is still very much marketed for sale all over the internet. They’re shipping, selling & supporting the product for $500. Just because marketing stopped pushing it in ads doesn’t mean a kid with only $500 to spend deserves to buy a potato. (Kinda the whole point of the video) If you watched the video, I’m not sure how you missed the commentary on the 12G - how the 6G doesn’t represent those models, how old it is, etc. I even included linked video examples of other projects I’ve used the 12G on. I’m guessing by your rush to defend the 12G that you own one & I’m glad it’s serving you well. As I said in the video, they are a great recorded that I’ve had a lot of success with & if you have the money to spend should be considered.
You’ve missed the point... again. I can go online right now & search for video recorders, and right now I can buy a 6G 5” unit, absolutely new, unopened, fully supported with a warranty from a pile of authorized dealers for $495. Just because the two biggest dealers have moved on, AGAIN doesn’t mean a kid looking for the cheapest thing available deserves to buy a bad recorder. BTW, I review, use and talk about A LOT of old & previous generation gear on this channel. It doesn’t become defunct or useless the minute a manufacturer puts out a new model. There are tons of folks who buy used, or simply don’t have the budget to buy the latest tech. If that is upsetting to you, I apologize, but hope you can see why other folks find the insight helpful.
lol you didn't watch the video I'm sure. That's not the point! Not everyone can afford the latest and greatest model, especially when tons of dealers are still selling the 6G with full warranty for half the price of the 12G. It's not like the 6G became obsolete, mine is still under warranty and works fine for what it is.
I haven't touched a Ninja V since this video was made honestly, but generally yes. I don't know if I'll go back to shooting on SD cards after working on SSD media only for so long now.
Here in Germany the Atomos Ninja V is about $100 cheaper than the Black Magic Video Assist 5". - I have to say, you totally missed the point of Black Magic USB-C port enabling you to but plenty and plenty of cheap storage to the device - SD is only fallback. - I personally would be interesting which of the devices has the lower noise profile.
Our company just purchased this exact Black Magic unit the beginning of July and we ran into the same SD Card issues. I tested the unit using some older SanDisk 128gb cards which worked fine except I was limited with the amount of record time. Unfortunately, I need to have at least 8 hours of record time available per project. Just like you, I ordered a SanDisk 512gb card, which was on the approved list, which turned out to be incompatible with the recorder. Luckily I was able to return those and I ordered 512gb cards from PNY which work without issue. The only downside to this unit for the type of work my company does is not having an audio line in. We also use older Ninja Blades and having the audio in is a big deal. I'm wondering if our company would benefit more from the Ninja V. Our cameras we use are Sony NX Cam 70u
Thanks Anthony, it's nice to hear from someone who had the issue & found a workable solution with the PNY cards. I wanted to order those next to try, but was against a hard timeline with week and too much money already wasted trying the SanDisk options. The Ninja V has been great so far, certainly not without its own limitations, but I've been very happy for what I use it for. Thanks for the message & do stay in touch and let me know what you do next!
SanDisk updated their cards in late 2019 and broke compatibility with virtually all Blackmagic Design products. It's best to avoid SanDisk if you're using BMD. I've found that Lexar cards work great.
I don't remember the BMVA being any louder than the Ninja V, but I also don't think I would call the Ninja V extremely loud either. I don't keep mine mounted to the camera though, so that might be why it's more of an issue for your rig. I've certainly worked with MUCH louder cameras & recorders in the past & my two main LED fixtures have fans that are not only kinda noisy, but also unpredictable when they will come on. I deal with it by keeping things spaced out and as far from my primary mics as reasonable, pointing fans & exhausts away from the mics & generally trying to knock down the noise before it gets to the mics. Are you using the in-camera mics for production or just for scratch to sync with in post? Might be time to look at a direct feed or camera hop to solve the issue if it's just for sync / backup.
Hi folks, the card reading problem is probably down to the combination of file format and storage size of the SD card being used. See page 47 of BM user guide. HFS+ is the older Mac version, exFAT is an older Windows format. If formatting on a PC using NTFS or APFS on a Mac the card will not work. BobUK.
Hi Robert, not sure what you're suggesting since this is a documented issue with very specific cards as mentioned in the video. Also not sure what user guide you're referencing, but formatting in the device is the preferred method, and still does not solve the issue. Other formatting instructions are on pg 49 in this manual - documents.blackmagicdesign.com/UserManuals/BlackmagicVideoAssistManual.pdf and still do not change the outcome of the issue with the 5" 6G model's compatibility with specific cards.

Hey Didimio - can you post a link to the 3rd party program? I've had magic lantern on a number of Canon cameras in the past & while it was great, it was not the most fluid setup for professional work at the time. I'd love to try out whatever you are doing with the a6500 though! Thanks!
Do you own one yourself? If the fan noise is 'VERY LOUD' after the initial spin up when you first switch it on, I would suggest contacting tech support...that is not normal. Compared to other popular recorders on the market, the Ninja V is not one I would consider to be loud, let alone VERY LOUD. If you search for ANY video recorder online & fan noise, there are always a vocal handful of people who claim they've bought one but immediately had to return it because the fan noise was so unbearable it ruined a whole day of shooting. Seems like many of them are also mounting everything they own on-camera or unreasonably close to their mics & talent. Thanks for watching & thatnks for the message!
I sent an audio recording at 6" to the Atomos folks who confirmed that this is not normal, the fan should only revv for 10 seconds at bootup so they advised me to return it for a replacement.

Hey you do know that the usb-c port allows you to connect external hard drives. So?? You probably should not be buying expensive sd cards
You do know this video is about the 6G model that doesn't have a USB-C port, right? It was kind of a big point of the video...
The BMVA could record on an external HDD via USB c...
The 5" 6G BMVA (which this video is about) can most definitely NOT record to external media via a USB C.
I have this camera and with the last firmware, heat is no longer a problem. I install a third party program that permitted unlimited recording time, limited only for the flash memory capacity. Here is the link with the install instructions for Mack & Windows users th-cam.com/video/wFZ5U8kRRqQ/w-d-xo.html. I am using this software for a few years without a problems.
Hey Didimio - can you post a link to the 3rd party program? I've had magic lantern on a number of Canon cameras in the past & while it was great, it was not the most fluid setup for professional work at the time. I'd love to try out whatever you are doing with the a6500 though! Thanks!

cons of the ninja V is the VERY LOUD FAN
The BM video assist 5" 12g is barely audible in comparison so yes it might be faulty so I contacted Atomos support.
I sent an audio recording at 6" to the Atomos folks who confirmed that this is not normal, the fan should only revv for 10 seconds at bootup so they advised me to return it for a replacement.
@@daslolo That’s a great result, unfortunate to deal with but really happy to hear they are sorting it for you 🤝
