    I've had 4 different Gopro's over the years, the last one being the 10. I had overheating issues with all of them. I like action cameras because of their size and ease of use. I have the Action 3 and the things that impressed me most about this camera is it does not overheat, and connecting a wireless mic is MUCH easier. No need for added adaptors or anything like what you'll need when using a gopro. Also I never had connectivity issues when using my phone to connect to the app. Has worked every time I use it. The mounting system is genius. I won't be getting the A4 because the A3 is so good to me.

    Great as always!
    The main thing that has been deal breaker for me, is that the Osmo has never had problems with over heat in 4K. Always just worked and never any hang ups. The GoPro, my good. All those updates:)

    • @Grandpa_Bangge
      @Grandpa_Bangge ปีที่แล้ว

      Adding to what you said, for me, anything that OVERHEATS, no matter how impressive the action cam is, is AUTOMATICALLY a deal breaker for me.
      Meaning, I could live with a JITTERY video than NOT having captured any video at all.
      I guess there are just some GP fan boys who could not accept that.
      Me, I don't own any action cam yet, be it a GP or a DJI. The reason why I watched this video is because I am canvassing for my FIRST action cam.
      I guess this content creator is leaning towards the GP.
      At any rate, I am waiting for the release of the GP12 before finally deciding to get one.
      Nevertheless, this video is informative.

    thank you greatly for actually presenting a review from a non sponsored point of view. ( they threw the camera around to everyone and their dog and it seems you might be the only person who has bought one in the world ! ) . My use case is strapped to a helmet riding a motorbike and camping ( if the gopro could actually stop being flaky ). And from that point of view some of your points you made about rocksteady etc are of vital import. I was very interested to see the low light in and out of dappled shade ( I go out on the same roads on the bike ) stabilisation issues. 👍

      @gplama  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      DJI have reached out and wanted the raw footage from both the Action 4 and Hero 11 for further analysis, which is good news they've watched the video and want to improve the product. I'm just home from another ride with the camera mounted on the bike and can confirm the latest firmware is still the same as shown here in regard to low light/tree cover and stabilisation. I'll post an update in the future if they improve things.

    Nice review as always - still "rocking" my original OSMA Action and it's performing well.

  • @TaoCovillault
    @TaoCovillault ปีที่แล้ว +1

    9:50 The stabilisation "issue" that you are pointing at, is actually from the motion blur at slower shutter speed, and it can be fixed with a simple setting.
    For the stabilisation to perform properly, you have to make shure to have a higher shutter speed than the 180 rule suggest.
    This is not an issue with the camera, this is how digital stabilisation and optics works...
    Luckily, the Action 4 let you set ranges of ISOs and Shutter speed while staying in automated mode ;)
    If you shoot at 30fps, in day light I would recommend a range of 1/ 200 to 1/ 8000 for shutter speed and set your ISOs range from 100 to 1600.
    I would also recommend setting your EV to -0.3 ;)

    • @gplama
      @gplama  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Herein lies the problem. I want to ride my bike, not deal with manually tweaking camera settings. The GoPro seems to handle my simple workflow requirements. DJI have asked me to retest with their latest update. Maybe they’ve work some magic?

    • @TaoCovillault
      @TaoCovillault ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@gplama Well, I understand that action cams are mostly "rec and forget".
      And the GoPro might prioritize holding onto a higher shutter speed to keep the stabilisation. This is at the cost of low light performance...
      Basically when you have any sort of camera with a fix aperture in automatic mode, if the quantity of light drops there is only 2 settings that the camera can play with:
      - Either increease the ISOs
      or
      - Slow down the shutter
      When to do what is the key here.
      When to do what, is the big question here...
      For high vibration action, like cycling, you would want 1/ 200 or 1/ 400 shutter to eliminate the motionblur in those jitters, so you wouldn't see the work of the digital stabilisation.
      But for a slight walk and talking head, you would mostlikely want to have as much light and as low Isos as possible...
      This is why I suggest to make 2 custom settings, one for your talking heads/chill and one for high action.
      Then you can choose C1 or C2, "Rec and forget" 😊
      I assume that in the newest firmware they set a parametter that try, as much as possible, to keep a 1/ 200 or 1/ 400 shutter when rocksteady + is on.
      That would be smart ;)

      Profit. And they believe it’s a good (or better). DJI went very BIG on the TH-camr/Influencer spend with this release. • @dmalovic
      @dmalovic ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Please try the cameras yourself, as you might be off the mark. I have access to both GP and DJI, and find the Osmo line better. For many people, GoPro is unreliable. It will crap out when recording. The menus are worse, screen responsiveness. I like the DJI build quality better as well, and it is nicer looking. The magnetic mount is a brilliant addition and it takes seconds to move the camera. It does not overheat compared to the GoPro. The front touchscreen is a MUST for chest mounted applications, where you want to adjust settings. The batteries both last longer, and support quick charging, which is super useful! Night performance is better. The biggest drawback for me is the lack of a GPS chip, so that telemetry can be included in the video. But I would say DJI actually leads in some departments.

    Probably the best review on this I've seen.
    Seems a few weeks early to decide. This is comparing the new DJI model to the old GoPro model.
    It seems as many free cameras as DJI sent out they may feel the need to get some cameras sold early! Maybe they know something we don't.
    If we wait a few weeks we might be able to make a more informed decision.
    I don't have a dog in the fight but I'm also not in a hurry and this seems rushed to market.
    It might not change anything when the 12 comes out but I'll wait and see.
    All I'm saying is most companies understand timing. 🤷‍♂️

    Did you try out the Horizon Levelling - and is it any better than GoPro's? Whenever I've tried to use it on my GoPro, it just slowly goes out of level - or it gets "stuck" if I go around a corner. It seems to be an issue people experience if the GoPro is mounted on a bike or vehicle.

I do encounter the levelling problem with my GoPros though in Horizon Level mode. Apparently a known issue for bikes/motorbikes and is best used on human mounted setups. I'll dig more into this soon. Maybe with the Hero 11, or 12 if it's out in a few weeks as expected.

      I have the OA3 and it wasn’t a pinch on the quality of the GP11. So one thing people don’t talk about is resale value if these things. GoPro’s are easy to sell, in fact I’ve sold multiple at more than what I paid for. Whereas the OA3 I can’t sell anywhere near a decent price. Losing over 25% on a camera that’s only a few weeks old.
      The bigger sensor in the OA4 would be nice but I get decent results on the GP11 in low light by using certain settings.
      The Quick Action button on the OA3 is also a pain, just like the record button. Hard to find and press in, so I presume it’s like that on the OA4.
      Really looking forward to see what the GP12 brings to the table. Hopefully a 1:1 sensor that can shoot at 5.3K in 1:1 and at least at 60FPS, and also help control heat buildup better to even it up with the competition, not that I encounter overheating issues with the way I shoot.

The footage I took at the beach in Queensland was great. That wasn't my typical use case though. Bikes are, and that's where it clearly didn't perform very well. There's a whole host of other things too... stiff record button, remote that doesn't turn the camera on/off, condensation issues on my first ride (which in all honesty shouldn't happen in 2023)... the Acton 4 having a single BLE connection (you can't use the remote and connect to it with the app at the same time)....but here we are... people are defending it. It's very clear the card DJI played on this one. Shotgun the camera to as many people as possible, offer money, offer the potential for follow-up reviews (and even more money). The review saturation means videos like mine will sink down the rankings. In all honesty, covering it was a complete waste of my time. Anyhow. All a good learning process.

      @@gplama If you poke around on YT for "GoPro overheating", you'll find a lot of videos on the subject. I found one video where someone did some testing and found that if you don't have the flippers open on the bottom, it cuts off airflow inside the camera. Another one suggests that when you start cranking up the resolution and turn up the stabilization, this will happen. Even with the flippers open and having some steady airflow, some people still had the cameras shutting down, but it bought them more time, like double.
      Another person suggests plugging in an external battery into the camera because the battery is getting hot and if its on an external power source, the external power will provide the power needed to run the camera and not heat up the internal battery.
      During a lot of these tests, the DJI cameras and the Insta cameras never shut off, but in some cases the LCD screens would stop working.
      I wonder if in your case, the bike is moving enough to keep this from happening and also perhaps you are not shooting in the highest resolution and that's keeping things under control. I have the DJI Action camera (the original one) and it's never shut off on me, and the only other GoPro we have in the house is a 4 Hero, so I don't have a way to test this myself.
      Personally for my use cases shooting in 4K or higher is just bonkers, so perhaps a newer GoPro will be in my future if I can record at a lower resolution and not have it shut down and I'll get the GPS data with it. On the other hand my current DJI camera still works great, so I don't have anything driving me to make a purchase. I'll probably keep using it till it dies.
      Also, I checked, no, the Action Camera 3 didn't have GPS in it either. Interesting that the GoPro has had that for a while now.

Unfortunately while the Action 4 is a great camera with some good features (the magnetic latching mount remains a strong point) it still falls a bit short in image quality and included features vs. a one year old GoPro model which is about to be replaced with an even better one we assume. That was ok when the price was $170 CHEAPER for the $329 Action 3 vs. $499 GoPro Hero 11 last year but now isn't as acceptable since GoPro permanently lowered their price to $399 and Action 4 RAISED its price to $399.
