Dude, so I’ve got to give you props. I’m not a huge “mess around with settings” type dude, but my footage always looks so slow so I gave your tips in this vid a whirl and hot damn, it made it so much better. Like way way better. Just wanted to say thanks for helping my slow ass look even alittle quick. You’re the man amigo.
From experience id say Framerate is my personal favorite of increasing sense of speed. Everything in 60fps looks so smooth and clean. 24-30 fps is impressively chaotic.
Ryan, I like your videos. I love this one! At 75, I know I don't ride like you guys but I do have the fastest times on my trails in my age bracket. And I am always looking to improve (which your videos have helped me to accomplish). But why I really like this video is I am a photographer/videographer and taught it in high school. The subtleties you have covered are pin point. Field of view, wide angle, sound quality especially were some of the greatest challenges my students had to learn as they were learning how to make movies. You can't see sound! It shows its angry head only when you get to see (and hear) what you captured on yesterday's takes. If I had the chance to work with you with the new technology and my new sport of MTB I would finish my life in the clouds. Thanks for what you have done. I will stay in touch on your channel.
I really gotta admit: I've been watching MTB content on TH-cam for the past 6-7 years. I've seen most Channels change for the worse - being that click bait thumbnail / controversial Video Title what so ever. But I always find myself enjoying your content no matter what. Keep up the good work Ryan!
Former 360 cam user here.... Was using the Insta360 One RS. I too reframed my footage and zoomed out a little more in post, really like how there were no warped edges but I didn't like the stretched, spaghetti look it was giving to my arms which you can kind of see in your video. I've seen other videos where it's much worse. But I'm back to using a single lens camera. As for ND filters, I think it's worth mentioning ND filters can interfere with image stabilization on some cameras, which is why I really like your tip on shooting later in the day to get more blur as using ND filters always added less image stabilization to may footage. Going to try that next.
First off, 24f for LIFE! Hahahahaha, I'm with you on the frame rate. I remember when I first realized that. I was like why in the heck is anyone saying to film in anything else? Second, those mic covers are awesome. I'm gonna have to pic some of those up.
Maybe Important to know for Step 3: Lowering the shutterspeed increases motion blurr BUT also for the shaking of the Camera -->As (exept for using gimbals) almost every action cam uses Electronic image stabilisation, they relay on a sharp image for the stabalisation to work properly --> shakey or blurry footage (I often think its hard to watch). You have to find a good middleground. Thats why I sometimes try to ad "fake" Motion Blurr when editing but I haven't gotten anything convincing of it.
Another very effective way to add peripheral speed i discovered is to correct the distortion of the footage, usually the very wide FOV of action cam (not 360) distorts very heavily the images making things near the centre of the image to appear bigger: this makes the things ur passing by "move" less in the frame. Distortion corrected footage makes u feel like u are traveling more space in the same amount of time compared to non-corrected ones. Hope this can help!
EXACTLY!!…. Well done!! I’ve been filming mtn bike rides since the original GoPro Hero I wore on my wrist … lower frame rate is way to go!! I don’t wanna film what I see, I want to film what I feel!
Thanks!! Gonna try this! I’m not going very fast regardless, but I’ve been filming at 120fps and editing it down to 60fps, and it just looks so underwhelming. 😂 The way you explain things in your videos makes it feel so obvious and easy. Appreciate that!
Pretty cool ideas if you are seriously into video production or you want to exert the effort make that top notch production at level 3. The typical MTB rider that wants to record the ride is going to find it hard to continuously change settings, stopping before or on a ride interrupts the flow & can piss of a group ride. The Best all round & general solution at this point is probably using a good 360 degree camera which has ND (motion blur) functionality in the editing software (like the Insta360 suite), stay at Level 2 with everything included without having to futz around at level 3. Stress less, ride more. Stay safe!
2 minutes in and I am amazed again how awesome you teach and explain. Exactly as with the Stand up to the Jump and the Stupid fast Cornering. I'm going to continue watching this vid... and I don't even have an action camera! :)
As a bumbler on easy trails I just need to try and go faster first 😂 I usually just switch between 24fps with auto settings or an nd filter with manual settings. Depending on the weather and light that day or whatever.. helpful video, cheers bro.
Great video mate! Straight to the point, no bs cliffhanger before the real informations start coming in, you immediately show footage demonstrating exactly what you're explaining. Nice work! :) I like how your advices on the framerate and lighting can help have footage quickly usable while reducing the (potentially dreadful) post-prod work ^^
I’m thinking of moving to the ace pro. I have the hero 11 and struggle with stabilisation when using ND filters in low light! Great video again! Keep them coming 😎🤟🏼
Haha, great video, very sympatic and "on the point" - thanks for sharing! I'll definitly rethink positioning. I also face the problem make things look fast on reels / shorts. as in the typical 9:16 format things are just too small to get the peripherial things onto that.
Awesome vid Ryan. I personally like a rode lav mic mounted to a media mod equipped GoPro 11 pro tuned running at 5.3k and 24fps. Hyperview on a lower but optimal chest mount. Where it gets weird though is when you go around corners hour when you see the trees bend in the peripheral that’s kind of annoying.
Great video... for sure going to help me to get from B-class action footage to those sweet crispy Triple-A jaw dropping edits. Question about the audio; instead of using wind-mufflers on the cam. How about using an external mic (DJI Mic 2, Rode Wireless Go) with one of those tiny dead-cats on it?
I was a bit harsh on a video I called click bait yesterday, but I also want to say this type of video right here is absolute great quality content. Good value information, great presentation, interesting editing! I love video's like this. If you have tips on high quality chest harnasses I'm very interested to hear. I'm using gopro's and find that the chest mount I have still bounces more than I'd like.
This was really helpful! Thanks a lot! I saw you are using an insta 360x3 as well. What are your go to settings for filming warp speed pov? + What are your export settings? Looking forward to you answer! Thanks Buddy 🙏
A big factor to that last clip looking fast is camera shake, I think the stabilisation was struggling because of low light levels. Once I upgraded to a modern GoPro my footage was wider but looked heaps slower because of the insane stabilisation
Been using GoPro Max and GoPro FX reframe in premiere pro - extra workand longer render times but great for customization, very informative episode thanks for sharing! 😁
I'm not filming myself but thanks about the explaining that was really interesting, especially the part about blur and framerate relationship I've noticed it but couldn't put my finger on what it was 😁🤘
Insta360 X3, wind muffs kit + stereo mode, and 36 or 25 fps. You're welcome. 🔥 I use the bike kit handlebar mount flipped upside down mounted as far outward as possible on my bar. Allows me to catch the backside of a jump or drop when I use driving mode split screen or catch somebody behind me as well to some extent. Yes mounting on top of my helmet would catch all that behind me even much better, but that's a terrible place for a camera.
Ryan what are you using for a wind muff on your ACE Pro? Seem like the flip screen could be an issue. And how do you keep the stab working with the ND'S? Thanks Man!
All good and well untill we reached the shutter speed step. GoPro in particular depends on crist frames to stabilize the footage, if you introduce a lot of natural motion blur, then the stabilization starts going straigt in the trash bin... Going with a 3rd party stabilized like ReelSteady can help mitigate that but to a point. How do you make sure you get useable footage with slower shutter speeds then without using a gimbal?
There's a balance to it. Isaiah nailed it with his footage, I think. A slow enough shutter to induce plenty of blur, but not so slow to fully disable his digital stabilization.
Great video, loads of info, subscribed to the channel. I was curious what were those noise canceling Velcro bits you stick over the top of your mics. I like the idea to be able to take them off when not needed and attach them back when you do. Got a link to them please?
Just for anyone lurking in the comments the insta 360 now allows you to adjust the side blur and increase the sense of speed. If you have a Gopro don't even bother with this stuff the fov and the software dont even come close to what an insta can achieve. Just sitting down vs standing up using a chest mount with a Gopro is enough to ruin the shot.
Awesome vid and tips dude! Only problem is nd filters (or just a slower shutter speed in general) will reduce the effectiveness of image stabilisation so this only really works on gimbal stabilised footage which you showed some awesome examples of throughout the video I think and demonstrated why it can be a problem without a gimbal in the last gulley shot where everything was a bit shaky. It's a tricky balancing act when trying to introduce motion blur to electronically stabilised footage. Regardless, top video dude and keep sharing your wealth of knowledge! love your stuff!
Completely agreed. If you’re on a smooth trail fine but on chunky stuff it gets super shaky and also induces ghosting (it tries to line up two frames with motion blur in different directions) Isaiah absolutely rips but the footage looks pretty shaky, might just be me. I think they would be better off doing the motion blur in post
@@andrewnituIf you are using a GoPro, different chestmounts give different results. Using the Stuntman chestmount provides much more stability to your shots.
Thinking about buying an action camera probably the insta 360 because I only have an iPhone and iPad for editing I have to be honest I’ve been worried about slow looking footage so I’ve now saved this video 😂
Love the great info! Just starting out with a new Ace Pro and this was just what I was looking for! Thank you! What would you recommend for mic mufflers on the Ace Pro? I wonder if those X3 muffs that you have would work?
Damn! Loam Ranger helping us bumblers make better videos like the pros! I love it. Does anyone have a link for some Velco Mic fluffies for my Insta360 One RS? I love different camera angles. I use a Telesin necklace mount, sometimes under handlebar near the fork mount, and I have also zap strapped the 360 cam like 2 feet out on my handle bar, reframe to look at myself, and it looks like a drone is flying next to me. Great for beginner jump lines!
Seems like in camera motion stabilization can't hand the vibration now and therefore it is even more important to have the camera on the chest or the head allowing the body to take the shock. In fact I am not sure at this point that motion stabilization will work at all here.
24 FPS is where its at, If you are using a actual editing software you can add motion blur in post. Another thing I do is use FX reframe plugins to remove the fisheye after so the terrain also look more scale to life and not as flat this can change the speed perception as well. Humm, maybe I should make a video about this IDK.
OK, first, amazing presentation of essential concepts. But, I have a question. Every single time I have put an ND on my GoPro and manually set the shutter speed, and set the ISO to auto, I get weird jitters in the video. I assume the GoPro's stabilization doesn't work correctly at 1/60th for example. Any suggestions?
Great tutorial. But there is one problem I cannot handle- with low shutter speed I have tones of blurries when stabilize footage with Gyroflow. Any advice?
Got any tips on getting better audio from the Insta 360? I've tried sticking all sorts of stuff over the mics to getting better audio and none of them seem to work. Have tried velcro, foam, fuzzy fur and various combos of the former. Ta.
Most natural is half the Frame rate. So at 24fps 1/48 or 1/50 Shutter ist great. But be careful with that. This can make you video shaky. You can also try 1/100 shutter. With Insta 360 you can add motion blur virtual. Its not shaky and its blurry. But there are sometimes artifacts.
How do you prevent the chest mounted Insta360 from wobbling around? I always get really shaky footage on drops/jump landings/chunky trails which are usually the most interesting parts.
To make it look faster.. I just go faster.. then I also have bonus crash footage 😂.
Jokes aside, some great set up tips there, love it 😎👍
Dude, so I’ve got to give you props. From experience id say Framerate is my personal favorite of increasing sense of speed. Everything in 60fps looks so smooth and clean. 24-30 fps is impressively chaotic.
beginner mtb gopro users checklist:
- 720p ✅
- right side up gopro facing the ground ✅
- 60 fps ✅
- basic hardtail ✅
- crappy audio ✅
- absolute raw footage ✅
Because you shutter is too high ?
@@pythagorfpvyes but with a lower fps you can lower your shutter even more and that combo makes for the most motionblur(“speed”) possible
Hardtail: Do we have a problem @@someflipswhoguy? 😂✌🏿
