What RUINED Dead Rising?

  • You know, it's surprises me that I haven't talked about dead rising up until now because it wasn't the first 7th gen game I played, but it was definitely the first one I heard about. Once one of Capcom's hottest new intellectual property, now just a relic of a previous age. So what happened? How did a groundbreaking, hot selling franchise fall so far, and eventually be forgotten? How did Dead Rising die? Well join me today as we take a look at what ruined dead rising.

    I think looking at the DR1 story as just a "consumerism = bad" theme is a little reductive. I like the idea of it being a theme of "how much can man push mother nature before she pushes back". Santa Cabeza was described as being "blessed with nature" and was entirely destroyed by the US govt and swept under the rug purely because man pushed a little too far with their experiments on cattle.

    • @Shift_Salt
      @Shift_Salt หลายเดือนก่อน +28

      In general I felt the overview of DR 1's narrative on this focused on the surface level, I personally love it for what it is. Besides it's not metal gear, the story serves the premise well and the sequel feels like it disregarded some stuff from 1 in favor of doing it's own thing entirely which created a bit of disconnect between entries moreso than the passing of development to a mostly different team did.

    • @Shift_Salt
      @Shift_Salt หลายเดือนก่อน

      @chandllerburse737The US government was conducting experiments in a more natural untouched part of the world because they wanted to take advantage of the local wasp's unique characteristics.
      They were trying to play god for their own means, fucked it up, killed everyone to cover up their mess, and someone who not only cared deeply about his home and people but the earth as a whole saw it as a crime that the US needed to answer for.
      The earth cannot realistically fight back in this case, but Carlito had many reasons to do what he did and justify it in his mind and one of them was definitely the idea that governments abuse and take advantage of things in nature in unnatural ways to achieve their own selfish goals for problems they create.

    • @ivratsdargy955
      @ivratsdargy955 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      @chandllerburse737 Carlito caused the outbreak because the US govt covered up their own accidents and claimed drug traffickers led to Santa Cabeza's destruction. Isabella spells that part out. Consumerism isn't really the issue, it's greed and gluttony that are the issue. The 2 mandatory psycho fights are corrupt food purveyors that will go to extreme lengths to keep their business going for a reason.

    So a couple of ideas I had for future DR:
    1. Instead of a literal time limit, it could have a sort of functional limit by not respawning items. Once you've picked up a particular weapon or food in a given spot, it's gone. This can add a more risk/reward factor to combo weapons as you're essentially sacrificing 2 items in exchange for one.
    2. Instead of a single sandbox environment, there could be a road trip type of plot where the protagonist is traveling across country, stopping at different cities. This could bring back some form of linear game design philosophy depending on how each town is designed.

    • @LeMicronaut
      @LeMicronaut 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      1) Is basically infinite mode from DR1. I think the time pressure is crucial to the series and what they should've tried is making the narrative non linear and not requiring as strict a sequence- i.e. there should've been multiple paths and multiple versions of the same "event" based on when it was encountered. Force people to split and miss leads/abandon survivors on a 1st playthrough, but on a new game plus it can be 100%'d. They just have to be sure to communicate this in tooltips on loading screens and the tutorial section. Some "scheduling" mode could've been nice, too by estimating player travel times when selecting objectives in the map (would help knowing when to reload a save). Allow people to save route markers for pickups, preferred paths to reduce time in the ui.

    • @LeMicronaut
      @LeMicronaut 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      2) The differently themed sections of the mall are meant to be that "variety", but if they really wanted to rationalize different motifs... I don't think a road trip is necessarily a big enough leap. It'd be really ambitious, but awesome if they could pull off a multi-protag narrative that jumps around the world, showcasing how responses to the outbreak differ across nations and the layouts of the crowded entertainment, commerce sectors across the world could be a lot more extreme and still make "sense" (i.e. america could have the pentagon mall, china could have a sectioned off block of street vendors and mixed retail/residential space like Sleeping Dogs, etc.

    What gets me about the newer games is that the bosses lose some of the humanity that was present in older fights. Characters like Cliff, Ted and Adam make you feel for them. Cliff was a Vietnam vet who regressed to his old war days after seeing his granddaughter die. Ted is someone who was taken advantage off and insulted his entire life, so when everything went to shit the only thing he could do is take care of the one thing in his life that made him happy, being Snowflake. Adam was a performer for children who watched his audience get torn to shreds, and all he wanted was to keep the ride going because it repelled the zombies. They felt real, for all the ridiculous mechanics and costumes, you could sympathize with alot of these people and understand why they went insane the way they did. You can imagine so many of them as just normal people before their outbreaks.
    But even in DRM 3 that starts to wane out. Having the 7 deadly sins as bosses is a neat idea, but instead of taking the place of Brandon or Randy as the psychos who were clearly awful before the outbreak, they replace the heartfelt ones that made Dead Rising feel special and real. Outside of maybe Jherri and Wong, the psychopaths in this game all feel like they were terrible from the beginning. They don't feel like real people. Even the ones you can sympathize with act like caricatures of the sin they represent. Then the rest of the games bosses are just awful people as well.
    Dead Rising 4 doesn't even try outside of one line saying Scare King was a schoolteacher which props for trying with one of them I guess.

    44:40 your theory is say is half right. As detailed in Matt McMuscle’s video covering Dead Rising 4, Capcom Vancouver was getting fatigued of doing Dead Rising games and nothing else yearning for something new to work on. However, Capcom kept turning down every pitch that wasn’t a Dead Rising game (such as a reboot of Dino Crisis). So when the team knew they’d have to make DR4 they decided to take the franchise in a whole new direction modeling the structure and tone after The Last of Us.
    The problem is they hadn’t asked Capcom’s permission to take this direction, fearing thetd be shot down. So they decided they'd just change course and were hoping they’d be forgiven later… Capcom wasn't forgiving.
    Capcom essentially told the Vancouver team to start from scratch while keeping the 2016 deadline meaning they had a very crunched development, and had to use whatever they could patchwork from the old version to make the deadline

    • @Shift_Salt
      @Shift_Salt หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      1. Capcom did not approve of CV's other pitches because they were either way too ambitious and expensive for what the company had already proved themselves capable of or the other Capcom titles they pitched ideas for seemed like a bad call. They wanted to make ANOTHER Resident Evil action game after 6, which capcom wanted to let simmer as they considered a new direction for the series to eventually give us 7, and also they suggested a dino crisis game yes. However given Capcom themselves had no consistent identity for the series in mind since every previous game was so different they figured handing the IP off to CV wouldn't provide fruitful results.
      Former CV staff have gone on record to say a majority of CV's failings were on IT'S management and they didn't blame Capcom JPN being weary on letting the company do whatever they want since they did waste a lot of money Capcom was already budgeting for them.
      2. As for the Last of Us inspiration, that was not a natural direction the devs decided on it was heavily influenced by Microsoft wanting a direct competitor with what Sony were doing and saw dead rising as their toy to play with.

      This is pretty spot on, the team really wanted to branch out. Then Microsoft started to get heavily involved in Dead Rising 3 and wanted the game to be darker and more mature to compete with the Last of Us. Microsoft wanted Dead Rising 4 to go even further in that direction and pretty much completely strip away Dead Risings identity and just turn it into a TLOU clone. When Capcom JPN finally saw this direction they flipped and so the team had to quickly cobble together the Dead Rising 4 that we got. This kinda proves that Microsoft never understood what made Dead Rising so appealing to its fans.

    All you had to say was "zombies on a cruise ship" and my mind started racing. A game where you're trapped on a zombie infested super-cruise ship (think Titanic but more video-gamey). The electronics are destroyed and the passengers and crew are either (un)dead or trapped (survivors to save).
    You can't call for help and you're chugging towards Major CIty. Throughout the game you're choosing tasks against the time limit, trying to fix the radio to call for help or get the ship in running order so you can steer away from the city, or even go full sacrificial hero and try to find a way to sink the ship yourself (bam, multiple endings and replayability). The survivors you can find and save will be able to help reaching certain goals that line up with their way of thinking.
    It could be so fun, and very tense since most of it would be in tight hallways and rooms.

      I think we’ll have to wait for the bad taste to be washed out of people’s mouths from 3 & 4, though reviving some other IPs that Dead Rising was seen as “stealing attention from” would help the bad taste go away faster. Of course, in a new Vs. Game, some representation is possible but it’s probably more in the tier of something like Breath of Fire, Power Stone, or even Captain Commando in terms of priority. An idea I had for a revival, which people would probably not like, would be a hard reboot with a much darker tone but the same gameplay, set firmly in the same universe as Resident Evil, giving us more enemy variety than zombies and the odd maniacs. Dead Rising is still my favorite video game of all time with my favorite Video game protagonist of all time, the simple everyman who’s covered wars… Frank West. I love the simplicity of what is presented but how deep it goes within the simplicity. The characters, story, gameplay, VA, music, psychopath bosses, and general mechanics just work great for me.
    I did have issues with the survivors when I was younger but nowadays they’re easy to guide and help. I don’t think Otis is annoying because you don’t have to answer the radio in the middle of a crowd of Zombies, find a safe place and then answer it, still don’t understand how hard that is. I once relied on OP weapons to guide me through like Adam’s chainsaw but now I just like to have fun with the malls simple weapons given, and I once couldn’t even get through the second case but nowadays it’s one of my favorite stories to go through.
    I still feel the general reputation for DR is how funny it is but that’s surface level, yes you can be a servbot wearing women’s clothes wacking zombies with a mall bench but the game is genuinely dark once you get into it with some plot elements that rival reality for me. One of my favorite things about it is how Frank goes from some snark looking for a scoop to realizing the severity of the situation so well that by the first nights end he’s more focused on what happened there and saving the people inside, the story basically takes a backseat to this crazy situation. By day 3 so much has happened and the situation is dire with the military that he doesn’t even raise his camera to take any pictures, at that point he has what he needs and is ready to get the hell out! Consumerism is simple but like the rest of the game I think it really goes deeper if you care
    The sequels may have added fan favorite things like Combo weapons, funnier things to do, Co-op, mini games, and what was originally more universal for people to play but nothing beats the original for me. Off the Record was my favorite for some time but overtime I began poking holes in both DR2 and OTR I didn’t like; from the story, most of the characters, the scaled back gameplay, simplified zombies, blurry textures, lame gore, meh villains (TK is cool), and the mostly bland psychopaths it just doesn’t hit has good as the first for me. Here we stand opposite and that’s fine but I find DR2 extremely cliche in terms of story. I like framed stories but the concept here transfer well to me compared to OTR
    It’s not a bad game by far and I still love playing it to this day but for me compared to the first it is not on the same level. To make this long comment short I never had many issues with DR3 and actually liked most of what the game had to offer besides the Psychopaths being jerks more than their name, very little challenge to it, and a meh set of villains for the story.
    DR4 is not only a bad rushed betrayal of a game just like another fourth title in an originally beloved series (SR) but the main issue with that game for me is how Boring it is. I’ve never been more bored in a zombie game let alone third person action game like I was in DR4 hanging out with imposter West and his awful writing and bad VA. Personally sometimes I wish Blue Castle games just never touched the series and Capcom either left it at the first or continued to make it in house. Yes they did probably expose the series to a wider audience but the second it was exposed it began to fail
    Many want the series to make a comeback or something but I’m happy with it being over and done with. Even with my issues with how the two sequels dealt with things I still enjoy them and I’ll always have the solid first game to return to like I do almost every single year. A full remake maybe for the 20th anniversary made in house by capcom would be cool but as it stands, it functions on modern generations for me to keep with me most likely forever so I’m content and happy with it.

    16:44 Honestly, I love the combo weapons, but there's a glaring issue: The spiked bat and knife gloves are so easy to make as soon as you leave the safehouse. These two are very powerful, reliable to make, and otherwise make it easy to ignore the rest of the combo weapons.
    I've thought on it, and I think they could have this fixed on any future ports: Have the payday loan shops have a platform where you can place up to 3 items at a time and pay a fee relative to the item. These 3 items will appear in the safehouse, just as you enter on the left to the stairs. This way, players can have a single combo weapon of their choice at hand, plus a third item for half another. Of course, you can only pick items that have a combo symbol. Maybe have a small mission where you save a looter and he puts in a good word for you to his buddies, unlocking the service for that playthrough.

    • @FilthyTea

      Yeah, that’s an issue I have with 2 and why I think the original dead rising is probably the best. 2 added a lot of really fun and unique weapons (moose head, lance, etc.), but you almost never see people using them instead of just spiked bat, defiler, and knife gloves. Granted, 1 still had a problem similar with triple booking the small chainsaw, but at least there, newer players wouldn’t know to do that and would still use their surroundings. With 2, it’s the entire gimmick, so of course people are going to only use them when they see that they’re way better and easier to obtain than other weapons.

      The part that sparked my thought was also while I was going through the game on Ps3; The gun that makes gas-zombies' heads explode actually appears from the start of the game in the maintainence tunnels to the North. Making the BFG for more than the last few minutes of the game was an interesting idea, and it seems a shame that for how little ammunition it has, that it can be such a chore to make it. Plus, it's kinda a homage to the first game having the Laser Sword and MegaBuster in the Security Room for new game plus; always thought the little square space as you enter the Emergency Shelter felt empty.

    @RedStar-nq9py หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Hi, first, I want to say I love the video. Second, I know some things about this downfall, mainly as I learned and researched a lot about these games. Dead Rising 2 first began development at Capcom before Blue Castle Games joined the project, In fact, many of the characters, setting, and ideas first came from Capcom themselves. For example, Chuck Greene was made by Capcom but was initially known as Chuck Reid, a smokejumper in his mid-40s who, as opposed to in his early 30s like we see him in the final. This was changed to a motocross superstar as they felt Chuck being a smokejumper would make him too over the top and not make him feel like an everyman. There are other changes, such as it takes place 5 years after Dead Rising 1 in the final game, which was supposed to be 20 years. While Blue Castle didn't make many original ideas for Dead Rising 2, they did add to them, like the multiplayer was supposed to be in the first Dead Rising, and Capcom wanted it in the second game Blue Castle added a lot to that. They also created combo weapons inspired by a Canadian TV series called The Red Green Show, where people would use duct tape to fix or combine things. Capcom still helped develop the second game and DLCS as a co-developer. Case Zero was supposed to be a part of the main game but was cut for pacing issues and was used to help hype up the base game. Case West was made because the fans were sad about Frank West's absence, and they decided to fix that. It should also be noted those DLCS were made with a part of the game's budget and took at least six months each. Dead Rising 3 was supposed to be released in 2012 on Xbox 360 and PS3, but the game suffered technical issues. Microsoft came in to fund the project and give it another year if the game was released on Xbox One only. They also made a lot of changes to the game. They made them drop the DLCS of Frank West and Chuck Greene to focus on the main game. The DLCS would have had Frank team up with the army and Chuck, the police. Chuck's role was much more different as he was a hero continuing his character from 2, but that didn't happen due to the DLC being canceled. This led to the mob boss thing for Chuck, as Capcom still wanted him in the game. Microsoft also made more story and character changes, like how the truck driver Dick (2nd player) and Annie (Katey) were supposed to have bigger roles in the story, and Annie could have been playable too. Microsoft also had Capcom Vancouver provide many accessibility options to make the game accessible to newcomers and aimed at a larger audience. Which is why Dead Rising 3 and 4 were so easy. Dead Rising 4 was supposed to be a series reboot that would have been like TLOU, as Microsoft wanted a game like that. However, Capcom was never informed of the creation, so they hated it and forced them to restart. This brought back Frank West and made the combo mech suit the new big feature; they also had to make the game with the remaining time and budget of the DR X TLOU project, giving them only 18 months. Capcom and Microsoft removed the timer in 4 to make it more accessible. So this is a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff I know about the Dead Rising games; I hope one day we can get a remake of Dead Rising 1 and 2 and have the series rise again.

You could even have ways to circumvent the normal unlock path to get to late game areas earlier, which changes the story path for the game and alters the areas that would normally unlock earlier to be harder to recognize the route you’re taking.

    Okay, for the record I never played any of the Dead Rising games, but I have a pitch based on this video.
    TBP said that sandboxes are more difficult to pace than linear ones. So, I think that we can resolve this implementing metroidvania/resident evil elements mixed with the premise of Need for Speed The run, in which you have a big run sectioned into smaller bits.
    The premice to accompany this would be something like this:
    Because of the constant outbreaks a big company owner becomes mad and begins to transform his factory into a crazy fortress that runs manly with smart zombie labor force, but with some humans in positions of power (psychos or bosses) and some to do PR stuff and other creative processes in the company (but this ones doesn't know about the zombies). Think something like Willy Wonka's chocolate factory.
    You are a person with a loved one, let's say that is a guy with a sister. This sister somehow was bitten and now works in the company to pay for medicine, but, one day the company closes its door with everyone inside. You know that your sister can stay some amount of time without medicine (lets say 3 days). So, you grab a sample and break in the factory having 72 hours to find your sister and understand whats going on.
    The gameplay would be like this:
    You have this factory that has its passageways closed and to open then you'll need a key item. This key item can be a NPC, an item or new ability, which can be a traversal mechanich or a blueprint for a new weapon. This can be adquired doing missions and in some instances you could choose which one or have advantages for having explored before. For example:
    You find a door for the janitor's office that is closed, so you could do a mission to safe the janitor and ask him to open to door, on a timer or he dies for the zombies. However, if you did a secundary mission before, you have adquired a blueprint for a weapon that opens a shortcut to the janitor or simply breakes the door for his office, ignoring the mission completely.
    After going to new areas and advancing in the story, the first levels would change adding the new enemies you encountered like zombie guards that have shields or zombie workers holding drills.
    I leave the details for the professionals, but I think this would be a fun game.

    54:35 - I'm sure someone else will say it, but barring the surviviors/psychos pillar, this can also apply to Project Zomboid which saw a MASSIVE spike of players when multiplayer came out.
    So maybe all we need is a new - cooperative - dead rising game.

    This is the game that made me buy a hdtv. I couldn't read anything and was getting so frustrated that I broke down and bought one. $300 for a fairly shitty 32 inch but man it made gaming so much better.

    You might like Shadow of Rome, same director and the combat might feel familair.

    Dead rising 1-3 was gold. 4 was just Mid , this is why you don't please a new crowd because its going to flop

    DR3 is best played in Nightmare mode. Still nowhere near as challenging as previous games but it is possible to come close to death sometimes. Especially fun in co-op, you can hit and knock your friends over but do no damage, even when using explosives. I saved my friend from being eaten by zombies with grenade spam, the blasts got him far enough away from danger to quickly heal. It's also really fun going to that boxing gym and having kickboxing matches with your mates in the ring with a zombie crowd coming to watch

    …I’m gonna be honest, “How dead rising, fell” would have been a good title too, great post tho 👍

    Case Zero was actually a free demo that released before the game did, I had no idea Case West never made it off the xbox though, kind of sad it was a decent dlc

    To be fair, the allegory for consumerism is straight out of George A. Romero's playbook, especially given how the first game drew so much inspiration from _Dawn of the Dead_ that they actually put a disclaimer on the box for the original Xbox 360 release saying that the two were not officially connected in any way. And honestly, I'd argue that _Dead Rising_ is one of the few zombie games that actually tried to replicate the satirical thrust of Romero's movies, beyond just the most basic, surface-level shout-outs.
    Way too many zombie survival games (and, frankly, zombie media in general) nowadays treat the zombie apocalypse as a social Darwinist proving ground for badasses instead of trying to tell stories beyond that. (Short version: let's just say I'm _really_ not a fan of _The Walking Dead_ and leave it at that.) I've always wanted to see a zombie game that does to zombie games what _Scream_ did to slasher movies, an extended pisstake on the genre in which every zombie game trope gets exploited and ruthlessly mocked. A new _Dead Rising_ game would IMO be a great way to do that, and some of your ideas would work very well for it. And, it would help distinguish a _Dead Rising 5_ from all of the other dime-a-dozen zombie sandbox games that have come out since 2006.

    I was introduced to Dead Rising in probably the most out there way. Growing up in a rural town that didn't have a lot of kids and is largely a retirement age community, there wasn't a lot of disposable income or people with up to date game consoles. The most current game console I had played on circa 2012 was the GameCube or PS2 at my grandparents' house. I was introduced to Dead Rising via Cheat from G4 TV back in the day and remember wanting to find it on PS2 so bad because I didn't know anything about console exclusives at that time outside of Nintendo

    This is the only game series that I constantly miss and google search occasionally to see if there are updates. DR2 was the perfect sequel, and i was deeply disappointed with 3 and 4 which i hate. I miss the original 2 entries and wish they would make another within that vein.
    I really miss this series

    DR3 is my favorite mechanically
    DR2 OFR is probably the best overall game
    DR1 had the better psychos, best map, best atmosphere of a b-rated horror movie in the best way

    I will never get tired of the corny one liners from Frank and Chuck.
    It has the same vibe as old school RE4 with Leon.
