- Rockstar's second stab at creating a 3D universe with Grand Theft Auto. After telling Claude's tale in Liberty City in the 2000s, it's time to head down to Vice City in the 1980's to follow the tale of Tommy Vercetti and his rise to power against all opposition.

I think it’s time for the “Total Overdose is absolutely insane” video Mr. Hammers.
Oh yeah that game is amazing!
Sounds good to me 🙂
Total overdose was awesome
I take it you watch fuzzy slippers?
Yes!!!!! Thank you!!!
Truly my favorite gta setting ever.
GTA VI should be dope
Couldn't agree more. Vice City is my favorite game ever, such an inviting and amazingly crafted atmosphere. The game just draws me into it like no one else.
@@MrHammers well it's set in current era so don't expect the same vibe
Isn't it great just hearing about a game you enjoyed a lot as a kid so much time later ❤️.
@@MrHammers
Maybe
Two things
1) Tommys nameless cronies are named Harry and Lee. Tommy says their names when telling Sonny what happened at the deal
2) Tommy not being able to swim makes sense in universe. Alot of people from cities like NYC dont know how to swim. It surprises me to this day how many adults dont know or never learned how to swim. Plus being in prison for 15 years probably didnt help. I doubt Tommy ever went to the pool or beach to swim growing up in the 50s and 60s in Liberty City when he had been doing crimes or working at his father's print shop as a kid
1. I had no idea, I'll have to watch that cutscenes back.. after all these years I never heard that lol
2. I suppose that makes sense, I wish that'd be mentioned in passing or something in the game. But I suppose head Canon works for something like that
@@MrHammersthe scene in beginning theres a body in the freezer if u listen close I just died in your arms is playing in the background
@@MrHammers While we're at it, this video really didn't need to be over an hour long. You could've cut everything from 15:37 to 1:13:34, as it's just you recapping the story beat by beat, and it honestly feels like you're padding the runtime. It's a good retrospect video and it would've done its job in 20 minutes.
@Gyrbae covering the story is what I do in every video on games I cover. Lots of people like to recap games they haven't played in decades
@@Gyrbae clown comment
Leo is a reference to Leon the Professional. Also, easiest way to win the races is to just blow up the other vehicles before the race begins. The era of being able to spend 1000 hours in this game will be sorely missed. It's such a classic. Thanks for making this video.
Huh, I didn't put the Leon reference together. Neat! Thanks man
If someone re-released this game with zero changes apart from ragdolling on corpses, I'd pay full price for it all over again.
Allegedly, the Housers offered Ray Liotta two options to be compensated for his work. He could be paid up front, or receive payment based on sales, (better idea).
The Housers stressed to Ray what a big deal the game was gonna be, insisting the second option made more sense, but he wasn’t hearing it.
Liotta accepted payment up front, and only realized the mistake he made once the game sold like crazy.
Supposedly, he made it known to Rockstar he wasn’t happy with the deal, and they responded along the lines of, “we tried telling you dude.”
Take this with a grain of salt, but this was what I read years ago pertaining to why Liotta and Rockstar hadn’t been on good terms since then.
That makes a lot of sense then if they offered it and he turned it down. Can definitely see why he'd be upset over that, but he didn't take the percentage risk so he got what he signed up for.
Where did you read this?
@@MAXBERTE
It’s been over 10 years, minimum, so I can’t remember. As I said, take it with a grain of salt.
It's also important to note that videogames as media weren't treated as important as cinema or television back then (not that long ago, really), so many actors never through that games could make so much money and success.
@@TKsh1
Yea, that was definitely Ray’s thinking,
(who by most accounts is a decent guy).
I didn't realize this video is so new. Vice City was my first GTA, and as timeless as San Andreas is, Vice City will always have a place in my heart
Fresh off the printers lol
Gta3 was disappointing if you played Vice City first lol
Vice City has will and always be my favourite GTA. The 80s setting, the music, The Hollywood Voice cast.
I was 13 when this game was released and I owned it on day one.
That was 22 YEARS ago !!!
Damn I feel old 😂
Hiring the Bikers to work as security on that Lovefist concert is actually a reference when the Rolling Stones did the same thing. It didn't end well.
Context?
(From Wikipedia)
Meredith Curly Hunter Jr. (October 24, 1951 - December 6, 1969) was an American man who was killed at the 1969 Altamont Free Concert. During the performance by the Rolling Stones, Hunter approached the stage, and was driven off by members of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club who were providing security and had agreed to prevent members of the audience from mounting the stage. He subsequently returned to the stage area, drew a revolver, and was stabbed and beaten to death by Hells Angel Alan Passaro.
@@schuhbackad1146Honestly? That sounds like the bikers did their job.
@@schuhbackad1146 That's it? Well deserved. The Hell's Angels are based in this instance.
@@schuhbackad1146 Also they got paid in beer and they we're recommened by Grateful dead and Jefferson airplane.
Tommy is an action figure in Zero's store in San Fierro in San Andreas;-)

Long videos are great when the topic calls for it. Classics like Vice City call for it.
I won't forget the first time i went to gamestop with my dad to buy vice city, me and my little brother used to take turns completing missions and we had a small note pad with cheats we wrote down, the soundtrack was great.
Yes loved the 80s soundtrack mostly the rock stations
The first time? How many times did your dad take you and your other under-aged brother to the store to buy that game?
@@mrbojangles1391 he means the first time his dad brought him to buy a game but in this case was gta vice city he just worded it off
Vice City is a Beautiful Game and i am so happy we are going to be Expirence it in GTA VI in The HD Era it's going to be so Great❤
I'm stoked for it, the trailer is so sick
Holy shit he finally reviewed the game where he got his pfp from
Long time coming lol
I always think of this game when I look at the profile pic, now I see it is purposeful lol.
@@Tmanw8898it one of hammers fav games mine too
I love the early 80s vibe, but the horrible mechanics are pretty unbearable for a ton of missions. Stopped playing about halfway through.
@@crosswalklarry just play it on PC
The love I have for this game is actually insane, a lot of my happy memories from my childhood is thanks to this game, easily my favorite GTA
The thing about GTA:VC is that it was pretty much the one game that finally made the rest of the corporate world understand how big of a deal this whole 'gaming' thing actually was in terms of dollar signs. It was so influential that it actually brought about the whole "80s retro" craze of the early 2000s and suddenly mainstream radio stations everywhere were playing Tears for Fears again.
This was really noticeable when GTA4 rolled around because, by that time, the record companies had cottoned on to the fact that there was a lot of money to be made and were now charging top dollar for the rights to any of their music, meaning Rockstar had to settle for a soundtrack with much less star power.
"this is the last dance for Lance Vance."... bro
So the two potheads at the docks are Wayne and Jethro that we see again in GTA: SA.
Must've been a hell of an adventure they went on with The Truth after leaving VC.
Dwaine* and Jethro
@@MrHammers Right lol
Loved the video! Your content is always fantastic dude!
Haha thanks my man
I absolutely love video game essays
Wild how Rockstar’s storytelling went from getting the job done to legitimately great in a single entry.
And yes, keep the long deep dive videos coming. You do them so well.
They stepped up their writing exponentially it's crazy, then San Andreas was Even deeper
Taxi cab lady is the lead singer from blondie herself if I recall correctly!
Also head floating through the floor at 58:07
Dang, I had no idea!
@MrHammers Ikr.
Really awesome video by the way. Certainly got a new fan.
@Ziggy_Rotten thanks dude! Appreciate that
Diaz always reminded me of Tony especially his outfit stature and hot headedness ironically though Diaz is Colombian while Tony is Cuban and Tony claims he doesn’t like Colombians
Vice City is one of my favorite Rockstar games ever. Set in the 80s, with the inspiration of Scarface and voiced by the late Ray Liotta from Goodfellas. What's not to like in this game.
Now GTA 6 is set in modern Vice City. Hope they bring some references, or hidden Easters from past Vice City.
it wasnt until a few days ago that I found out Cam can die in the heist
even Phil has something to say about "shame about Cam , good guy"
Tommy "yeah but at least we got more money!" or something like that...weird
I actually replayed it a few times to see the differences and I could never get Cam to survive, dude kept just walking in the way of gunfire lol
Tommy cold asf.
@@MrHammers last time I played it a cop car ran him over lol
I didnt know he was disposable
@@checkmate5336 yeah wtf he didnt care for him
@@chris_player2995 Tbh imo he was always a prick. I mean don't get me wrong, he has his reasons but sometimes his a bit much ya know.
It makes sense why Avery Carrington (Bert Reynolds) was killed off in such an anticlimactic way in GTA LCS, and then eaten by Donald Love. It was personal apparently 😂
As a kid I wanted Lance Vance to be a homie but now that I've seen this video and played GTA VCS I've noticed how incompetent and untrust worthy Lance really is he even risked his own brothers life over drugs which I should've noticed at the beginning of the game
Yeah, I thought Lance was cool before replaying as well. But he's kind of a scumbag
I also feel like he tried communicating how he felt to Tommy early on... there's a time or two in the game Lance calls tommy out of the blue just to vent and Tommy gives him the cold shoulder...
Love the long format videos , keep up the good work
Yessss👏🏻👏🏻 10/10 video man! Loved it
Love the longer deep dives into these games. Always love forward to them.
Thanks my man!
that was awesome bro thanks again for the great content!

As always great video man!
Thank you brother
First video ive seen of yours. Gotta say loved it man!
Thanks dude!
I have been waiting for this very video since I first saw your profile pic when watching the 50 Cent Bulletproof video.
Thank you, Mr. Vercetti
That was a great video!
I would love to see you cover the rest of the GTA games
I think this was the right amount of time for a video covering a game like Vice City. Went over all the key plot elements and characters along with highlighting some noteworthy side content.
This would be a perfect format for a future San Andreas video.
As someone who works from home, longer videos are a blessing.
Just wanted to say I’ve been watching your channel since 10k and you’ve been big inspiration to me keep up the good work mr hammers
Thank you my man. Appreciate the long haul support!
Great video, my favorite in the series.
*Fun facts about Vice City : It seems that the Forellis are the 3D era Gambinos ,so Sonny is the 3Ds Gotti , although I can't be 100% sure that the Gambinos were the 1st Italian - US crime organization in Miami ,*
*Tommy's based on the aforementioned: Tony and Joseph however there's also a possibility that Jon Roberts (born John Riccobono) that was a Gambino soldier , was also taken as an inspiration to the creation of Tommy, while the original Vercetti's appearance was reminiscent of Ray Liotta , the Definitive Edition bears more similarity to Vincent Gigante who was the boss of the Genovese crime family on the other hand*
*Upon further investigating the Gambinos and Florida , I found out another pallarel 'tween Tommy and Joseph Armone this time, as Gotti have sent 'em in '86 to Florida in order to supervise the Gambinos interests in there*
Very interesting there! The story of Joseph Ianuzzi is also related to the Gambino family, so I think your analysis holds some weight
@@MrHammers *Certainly, adding to the fact that Thomas "T.A." Agro to whom Ianuzzi was owning money to , was Gambinos consigliere and worked under the aforementioned Joseph Armone!*
@domasavpedzivin oh shit! Good stuff
@@MrHammers *I've something something that I ain't seen coming , well there was another guy related to the Gambinos making moves in Miami, before '70s and his name was Thomas "The Enforcer" Altamura , and that's not all , it turns out that beside being a Mobster he owned a food place that was called ... Sonny's Restaurant , ....and he had close ties with Santo Trafficante , coincidence? , his mugshot looks suspiciously familiar ain't it ??*
Great vid! 💪
That awesome video man
You should've mention of Tommy yells at Lance which makes Lance reminded him of his brother, Vic after saying that people patronized him all in his life and says his brother would do that(Vice City Stories shows Lance's man child personality as he caused problems for Vic)
The longer the better (that's what she said)
I personally like when creators go in depth on the topics they cover. Especially when it comes to games.
I usually put them on while driving to work (listen to them not watch lol) or when I'm just chilling.
Ive never been able to take titles like "A complete look at ..." or "the history of ... " seriously when you glance over and see the video length is like 10 - 20 minutes.
Of course the amount of available information is going to play a role as well, no point in an hour plus video if there's only 15 minutes of information padded out.
Like the way you paced this video , just about perfect IMO.
Gonna hit the subscribe and check out your back catalogue
Hey thanks man! I've come across some longer videos that are a lot of fluff and it kinda turned me off to making longer ones myself. But with a game that has an much content as vice City I could easily have added another 30 minutes of content, but I tried to keep it relatively concise haha. Glad you liked it, appreciate it dude
This is the best Vice City content on TH-cam I've ever seen
This was my first GTA game ever & to this day it's still my favorite! It also indeed included such iconic songs! I especially loved "Yes-Owner of a lonely heart" in the biker missions!
adding myself to the lover of the long videos list!
I love videos like this about GTA games, I am gonna get in a blanket, have some snacks and watch the full video!
Great video!
The end credits music still gives me chills
JUST what i need on a hungover Sunday! MY MAN! One of my fav games ever
Cheers bro!
MrHammers in tha HOUSE!!!!
Hell yeah. Unwinding after work to this video. Classic game that never gets old. Im actually painting some of the weapons icons because they are so dope and legendary.
The weapon avatars are iconic!
VC was really ahead of the curve when it came to 80's Nostalgia, as it launched before that aesthetic became very mainstream and overdone as it felt like a loveletter to the era the devs grew up in.
Also worth noting how influential Scarface was, because when it got it's own game in 2006 it was accused of being a Vice City clone lol Hope you cover it and it's weird poker game advertisements!
I prefer long form videos but I love any video you make
Another great one!!
Thanks dude!
We two hombres in a crazy town, we gotta watch each other's backs.
Nice works, i was hook for the entire 1h20 🙌, small suggestion, the video is already long i known but i will love if you could add a section about easter eggs.
I'll keep them in mind for future videos, thanks dude
I don't know whether to be glad or sad you didn't use the clip of Batfleck shouting, "WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME?!" to the Martha bit.
Spectacular video by the way. As usual.
Another instant classic from Mr. Hammers !

This is why I love this channel
You know what you’re talking about and not just dismissing the issue
Thanks bro! Cheers
The impact of vice city is still going strong coming 22years later. There's a grouo from down south in ireland that tour with a great playlist from the game, came to belfast last year and the place was packed out, we're all wearing hawian shirts and the band were unreal, setting the vibe with the vice city opening theme then hitting us with the songs.
My favorite GTA and this video sums it all up so well.
Mr. Hammers 🎉🎉🎉
I just recently went through this games story for the first time and man I can see now why this game is so beloved to so many people. Not only gta fans even some who just grew up with this game either playing their parents copy or older siblings copy they brought to show and tell haha. That being said there is still plenty of jank in this game where it feels the games against you at times. I think the best asset mission is completing all car lists and getting Hillary’s car and the race car with 9k revenue. Awesome vid dude so glad it’s here I hope you have the energy for more long vids like this. Now….sanadreas in the future? 😏
I always liked sunshine autos too, felt like I was in gone in 60 seconds just going down the list, and the car rewards are super cool.
If I can get my steam copy of San Andreas running we'll be good, otherwise I'll have to dust off the ol PS2 and get some recording hardware haha or emulator I suppose
@@MrHammers now you have to have a shot of you blowing literal dust off the ps2, cough like crazy then do the shot of sticking the disc in the ps2 giving it that classic feel. Then it doesn’t work so you just get an emulator running in seconds 😂
That's a good skit hahaha
For a moment I was "wow this bro surely keeps using the hammer"
... It was your channel logo 😅
The release date was crazy. I remember buying a PS2 in mid 2002 just to play GTA 3 and to finally have a DVD player but then seeing the poster for Vice City in the game store. I remember thinking to myself, wow, they have another one coming out already?
As a kid I could never beat Hilary in that street race unless he crashed or if I got him bugged out on some environment.
It took me 3 tries, Hilary is a good driver confirmed haha
This was cool bro really I can't wait to see GTA6 now 😅 it's gonna be crazy.
Fun Fact: the cab dispatcher for Kaufman cabs is voiced by Debbie Harry from Blondie
17:50 All these years, playing & watching this game, and I *never* noticed the drugs & cash on the table! I’m kinda ashamed of myself. Thanks for pointing this out!
I´ve honestly don´t mind long videos you´ve got good content and i feel i got the game know better by you´re work so im okay with lenght of them,.
Great video👹👹👹
This is great make more videos like this one for other GTA games
You know what is funny is the run down mansion near the p*rn studio actually has almost identical layout without the fountain to Tony's in Scarface it is odd to think that movie was technically a remake of a vintage gangster flick about Al Capone and whiskey bootlegging
*the 2002 controls always made these old GTA's hard to play for me....but i bought the remastered trilogy last year and it really updated and fixes these control issues. all 3 games feel like brand new games and they all look Amazing* 👍
I loved this game, I have played it on and off for 15 years and vice city continues to feel like one of the most alive video games i have ever played.
Miami Vice, Scarface, and Goodfellas mixed in the best way
Lil bit of Carlitos Way sprinkled in
Agreed Vice city was a great game !
Great video like usual !!
Always great watches !!
Also : not sure if you already made videos about them but I would really love to see videos about the Deus ex games !!

@MrHammers I definitely recommend the first one at least!
I love this channel!

I never noticed thay detail about Sonny setting up the ambush! 😮 wow...That really changes things!
Absolutely loved this!
While im sure you know there’s no shortage of Tony Hawk and Silent Hill long-form video essays, I’d like to see your takes and experiences with those titles!
I have a video on Silent Hill 2, and I'd probably get into that series again. IDK about Tony hawk though, maybe one day!
Your output is insane man. I just finished the Dead To Rights video!😂
To be fair I didn't upload anything for 3 months prior to the dead to Rights vid haha. This one has been cooking for a while
I like the long deep dive.. would love to see it for other games as well especially Rockstar games!
Okay good! Cause Red Dead Redemption is coming up
@MrHammers yessss!! I was actually gonna suggest that and decided not to lol now I'm excited.. red dead is my favorite series ever! I've played 1 and 2 so many times..even revolver wasn't too bad but the game gun outdid it imo. I look forward to the rdr deep dive! Are you gonna do both 1 and 2?
Yeah, I've finished capturing all my footage for rdr1 so just working on a script and it'll be cooking. And then I'll tackle replaying rdr2
I also have videos of revolver and gun on the channel in case you didn't know haha 😁
Very nice facts about Vice City.
You should review the True Crime games and Made Man too.
They're on my perpetual list of games I eventually want to cover lol
I graduated high school in 02 and pretty much all I remember of my freshman year of college is playing this game the whole time
48:11 I Remember this cutscene glitched for me somehow and Tommy was driving around inside the elevator like crazy 😭
Indeed it is! The game of my teen years! I will never forget it!
People miss the context of just how HUGE gta 3 was. Like gta 4, 3 was a reboot of the whole series on next gen. Then we get the sequel/prequel V I c e C I t y
It was perfection.
I actually grew up in Miami, and Vice City is eternally more nostalgic 🌅
Never been particularly into the GTA franchise as a whole but really enjoyed Vice City.
i feel like Vice City Stories is more of an improvement, maybe im the only one ?
No, I agree!
Gameplay wise , definitely!
@@dhlhthriwdhskissos9606 yea i also agree gameplay wise but also character wise, i mean its great being Tommy and his rise to power but Victor is more sympathetic thats why i like him more (it does help the fact that he has to deal with Lance bullshit even longer then tommy and them being bros is the reason why Victor haven't cap him), i mean rockstar even improve on their character with GTA4 with Niko & Louis (maybe even Johnny but uhhh.. GTA5 happened and just curb stomp his arc & growth)
@@MrHammers kinda wish you elaborate more, but chances are your gunna make a vid about it... soo keep up the good work, your vids are great bruh-duh
Writing and side content wise, GTA VC is my absolute favorite, it is what kickstarted that Rockstar wasn't fucking around with their business. GTA SA is still my personal overall favorite (and it is what emphasized that they meant business all around).
Anyway, personal thought aside, I really loved this well, video retelling of the entire story (and what influenced each other element the game has).
And it shows that Tommy Vercetti (fuck me if I misremembered the name) really meant business and telling no one should fuck around with him (as we all know...at some point bro even solo'ed the shit out of everyone).
I like this i think certain games like this big titles a long deep dive would be fine i loved this refresher other games maybe smaller. But this was great and i too love Vice City
I agree, thanks my man!
