Sandwiched between the 1998 and 2002 releases of Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell, respectively, was the oft-forgotten Syphon Filter that hit the original PlayStation in 1999. Each title contributed building blocks to the stealth-action genre. Metal Gear Solid with its innovative storytelling and mechanics set a perfect cadence. Splinter Cell’s masterful use of shadows and immersive gameplay laid new ground. Syphon Filter left its own mark on so-called sneak 'em ups, leaning heavily towards the genre’s action-oriented qualities while tackling then-contemporary subjects such as bioweapons and shadowy terrorist cells.
Many remember the PlayStation franchise’s first three entries as bonafide classics, yet the fourth release-The Omega Strain-ventured too far from its roots. Dismal reviews and a subpar commercial showing for The Omega Strain brought Syphon Filter’s momentum to a sudden stop. Not even the acclaimed PSP installments could restore the series' former glory.
The property, consequently, lay dormant for nearly 15 years before a ray of hope shined on future prospects for protagonist Gabe Logan and The Agency under which he conducted covert operations. That hope manifested via Days Gone, an open-world zombie game that deftly tied the former’s outbreak to the programmable virus that PlayStation players tried repressing in years past.
A questionably-managed day one release and reportedly missed sales targets shifted Days Gone to the sidelines, once more calling Syphon Filter’s future into question. Given that key creative forces have since departed developer Bend Studio, it would appear Syphon Filter’s long-standing status as little more than a PlayStation classic won’t be remedied anytime soon.
This is the rise and fall of Syphon Filter.

Syphon Filter gave us the best taser in gaming.
Just straight roasting people to flames from long distances 😂😂
Shocking isn’t it
The only taser with a half mile radius
Can we all admit that we found great pleasure in tasing enemies in the game 😂
I can still hear it till this day. Thay shotgun too
Glad to see the channel still going
Thank you Patreon supporters
I really love this channel
I am glad you are back with such a long and great quality video. It was great to support you.
The running animation will forever be burned into my memory
That and the m16 sfx lol

I remember getting the OG Syphon Filter for my 12th birthday! And I don't care what anyone says, The Omega Strain was waaaaaaay ahead of its time.
Never got to play Omega Strain online, but I loved it regardless. The only gripe I have is that certain missions were locked behind accomplishing tasks as a team, which could only be done by playing online. I did play those missions, but through the use of a cheat disc.
Yes!
Thought I was the only one who thought all of the games were amazing and Omega Strain was groundbreaking. I rented it a lot at Blockbuster. And that's coming from someone who's favorite series of all time is Metal Gear.
@@nathannicholson2933 you can play it online today using fan servers, both on ps2 or pcsx2, the game is dated but it is a fun experience online even today
I agree 100%. In the PS2 days, I didn't have broadband internet and I didn't know anyone who did. So a lot of Omega Strain felt very neutered and I didn't like it that much due to being stuck offline.
But I just got to play the game online for the first time about a month ago and had an absolute blast, I definitely agree that it was ahead of its time. There's a whole lot of fun ideas. I probably would've loved it if I was able to play online when it came out. RE Outbreak was another game I felt similarly about too
Now thats a name i havent heard in a long time
#DANNYonEVERYWHERE :D
I have never heard of this game ever... :/
@@Kleavers Oh man, that’s so weird to hear but I’m probably a little bit older. This game was ahead of its time back then. If you’re one of those people who can comfortably play older games, I would highly recommend checking it out. Oh and Syphon Filter 2 had the best local multiplayer PvP levels (for the time).
@@TitaniumTurbine i back everything Titanium said. By modern standards it might not look much but as a kid this game was amazing, it pushed all the boundaries for its time and its multiplayer was pretty fun. I never got to play 3 (the first 2 was owned by my older brothers and i got out of video games for a bit at the time) but yeah, great series. It's sad seeing how many great games like this used to exist and now we had a market which sucks pretty badly.
We're fucking back. Syphon Filter was a huge part of my childhood. It's one of those games that I played so much, I can replay it frame perfect even years later.
I did this when I found out it was on PSN!😂 That muscle memory kicked in! I was super amazed at how much I remembered after not touching this game since I was kid 😭
LOL "frame perfect" doesn't change that almost everything else about them is so old and outdated. Even emulators can't fix the gameplay
@@lutherheggs451 I think what they meant by “frame perfect” is the fact that they can get through the game efficiently with little effort.
@@marcgodley3064 Thank you this is what I meant.
@@lutherheggs451 The gameplay is fine, skill issue is your problem.
That Syphon Filter 1 demo damn near blew my mind.. must've played it for over 20hrs before finally getting the game 😂❤
I played the crap out of the at a friends house demo because I didn't have a playstation... it has a special place in my heart!
I first played it at Target on a demo Tv. It was glorious at the time!
Back when demos where heavy
@@thingonathinginathing I was subscribed to Official PlayStation Magazine from Issue 1 right up until it went digital ❤
I had *stacks* of demos man, even in sleeves they took up a whole damn cupboard 😂
I also remember the demo, so when I went to buy the second installment bc I couldn’t find sf1, the clerk said they couldn’t sell it to me bc I was too young, I really learned how the rate system worked that day…
I love Syphon Filter. I remember playing this masterpiece when I was 13 and in the 7th grade back in 1999. I am turning 38 in June and I still play it. I miss my younger days. But in the end, we all age.
What truly matters is how you live.
Happy early birthday!
Amen. Happy to know there's lots of people out there who loved and enjoyed the game as much as I did 💯
39 here.
I'm a few months away from retiring from the Army.
MGS, Syphon, Splinter, and so much more, are why I've spent the majority of my life in the military lol.
@@InitialFailure kept you waiting huh? lol
@@GerardoSanchezZz thanks
Oh shit Siphon Filter 1-3 was one of my favorites back in PS1. Man do I miss this series.
They're available on Ps4/ps5 in the PS store.
Even the PSP titles: Dark Mirror and Logan’s Shadow were good.
Such a shame Sony let this title fall to the wayside.
@@steadly3668 I'll stick to my emulators for the time being
@@danielmichener It has nothing to do with letting it "fall by the wayside" there are 100 other stealth games that all do almost everything 100 times better than Syphon Filter ever did. Its OK for a series to just end without having 500,000 sequels
@@lutherheggs451unbelievably bad take. It had 3 main line titles for the PS One. There aren’t “100 titles” that did it better at the time-hell there aren’t even 10. Yes, the games controls were rough but that was normal for the time (Resident Evil tank controls being one example).
No one is saying we need Syphon Filter 15 but Sony bringing it back with an all new storyline would be great.
I still miss the best taser in gaming history to this day.
The fact that they decided to launch the last title on PS1 rather than PS2 to honor the original fans is crazy by today's standards...fast forward a few years and Sony did not care as much considering God of War 2 and 3 launched on different generations, and now such goodwill gesture would be completely unimaginable...things have definitely changed. Great video!
gow 3 released 4 years after the ps3 while syphon filter 1 year after the ps2 so you can’t compare them
It was probably also a lot easier, the ps2 was still a very new console.
The Menu Music for Syphon Filter is amazzzzin
Guys, get parts 1-3 on PS4. The PSP ports, however, have glitchy controls. Relive your childhood. The controls and visuals are smoother.
This series was well-written, produced and featured fantastic music. Perhaps Gabe can return in a semi-open world format, or a single player campaign with depth and some open-ended scenarios. Precision was the developers' strength. It's not over yet.
gabe went into hiding and asuumed the identity of sam fisher , head cannon
Very nice to see more Syphon Filter coverage! I love this series and have done my best to continue to cover them on my channel as well!
Honestly they have aged very well and are still very fun to play! The music is amazing too! Plus the passionate fans that keep it alive are awesome, very nice people :)
Thanks for this!
Like a true SF fan you didn't hesitate a second to check out this video❤

Whenever i see a Syphon Filter video I always appreciate the gameplay, level design and art style, but now i must emphasise how amazing the OSTs are in every single game in this franchise ❤❤❤
Bro playing syphon filter on ps1 literally felt like i was in the future. Compared to mgs which felt like playing a movie
Thank you for this great video. It took me to my childhood for a while.
Thank you! Glad it took you back in time.
Happy to bring the memories. Thank you for the donation!
This series never died for me. I play these every year.
I love Syphon filter so much, it was the first games I got for my PS1, in fact, I bought Syphon Filter 1 before I got my PS1, just so I could have the game and waited for Christmas or my birthday for the console
Great, happy to see you back!
Great memories with this series. My dad was a bit of a gamer and we had a family playstation. I remember once my dad was on holidays from work, and I came home from school to find every window in the house covered and dad was playing this game in total darkness on our surround sound system in the dark. We used to trade off and work together to beat SF1 and 2 as well as some of the PS1 Medal of Honor games. Great memories and a great game.
It's still astonishing how Siphon Filter was ahead of its time.
Oh my god one of my suggestions made it! Love you guys and love to see you still going

Thank you so much, Richard! Really happy you enjoyed our video. :)
First Josh Strife Hayes video on this game, now I get to see GVMERS.
This game has been an unnamed memory in my head since childhood. you have just given those memories a name, thank you!
Me and my brother played the hell out of Syphon Filter 2 multiplayer, we'd always race each other to find the M79s in the maps. Good to see y'all shining a light on a classic series
I remember that game and was always surprised it didn't took off like the Splinter Cells games.
In a world of remakes, OG Syphon Filter needs it.
Spent a lot of time playing splitscreen multiplayer, running around with the Russian Uri yelling "Capitalist pig!"
Personally would like to see coverage of The Warriors on PS2 by Rockstar!
My God... Syphon Filter!
So glad to see another video from you, and that you got so much support when it was needed
Syphon Filter was really a great series great locations atmospheric soundtrack globetrotting Spy Stealth action thriller it was really unique at the time and have great memories playing in in 2001 and 2002... the in-depth descriptions of firearms as well as the legendary taser...... in Syphon Filter 3 there is a extremely memorable mission in Kabul Afghanistan where you have to escort a truck along a desert road at night and then eventually fighter tank in a Afghan Village pretty revolutionary for the time
This needs a remake on todays tech fast! I loved this game right along with MGS!
Forever my favorite series 💛 thsnks for the upload
You guys knocked it out of the park as usual with this video. I'm glad the team is getting the support it needs to keep going. You goes do fantastic work.
Still one of my favourite games of the time, need this game to be remastered ASAP
I've been waiting for this video for a long, long time. Thank you my friends.
Syphon Filter double disc had Wu-Tang forever vides! The PVP split screen... Oh the epic battles we had!
You are content creators absolutely worth supporting, a most professional endeavor of a most beloved topic
I'm glad you can keep doing these amazing videos
Syphon Filter was so ahead of its time that it even had a diverse cast of heroes too.
We need a remaster of the classic trilogy now!
Amazing video as always! 🔥
I'd love to see Syphon Filter rebooted with more refined stealth action gameplay.
But I'd also love to see that initial fantasy concept spun into a new IP.
So glad to see another video from you guys. I couldn't contribute to the patreon but I'm so many people came through to show love. Y'all deserve it.
Been Asking For This Video For A Few Years Now...Thank You!!!
I remember going over my friends house after elementary school and playing the original Syphon Filter. I eventually got SF1+SF2 for my own PS1.
I'm so happy to see this video hit my sub box. I was going to be devastated if this channel had to fade away. Thanks for the hard work, and thanks to all the backers that help make it happen
After the last video, I thought Gvmers was going away. Glad to see a new one!
Syphon filter 2 is one of the best games ever made. Sony should revive the series!
Oh man I played Logans Shadow on the PSP and I thought it was literally peak stealth...I felt like a god playing that game
It was probably one of the most impressive psp games. It kind of boils down to silencer+thermal goggles+being able to shoot through walls= basically god mode, but as a cinematic 3rd person shooter, Holy shit there was nothing else like it on the psp. It's not so great on other consoles to be honest, but i must have played through that game 20 times on the psp. The soundtrack was 💯
I remember not having the money to buy the game from the store or to order a physical copy and what I did was simply replay the demo on the PSN store over and over again. I'm not sure if you remember but have you played the SOCOM games on the psp?? Damn that was a decent Tom Clancy clone I remember...wonderful game very grounded
Glad to see the new content. Y'all are awesome!
Very glad to see the channel going strong! You guys really take me back to the vibe of being 12 in a game stop and seeing the lil promos on the TVs, or watching G4 when it was a good channel.
Keep it up you rock!
Days Gone proved that they are more than capable of bringing the series back.
You guys make the best gaming documentaries on TH-cam :)
Glad to see your back. Keep up the good work.
Great video, any chance we can get a rise and fall of the “Conflict” series

love your work, please never stop! I miss syphon filter
I remember playing Syphon Filter on PS1 way back then when I was too little to even understand what to do yet I just ran around and was amazed by the "level design" and being able to shoot enemies lol. Good times!
This was such a big part of my childhood. Thank you for uploading this!
Syphon Filter was a favorite of mine for so long. So much fun and great memories. Another great video!

My first Syphon Filter game was the first PSP release.
Excellent game, and one of my favorite 3rd person shooters on the handheld. Got me through many long nights.
I hope you guys keep making great videos!
Good to see you guys are still going strong! I was worried after that last vid.
I've been wanting to get into siphon filter since playing it on my ps1 classic. Easily one of the best games on it.
So good to see Syphon Filter getting some attention, one of my favorite series of all time. Endless hours of fun playing this and still run it every now then till this day. Would be amazing if they remastered the first 3 or even rebooted the franchise one day
Oh man I'd be in my living room screaming like a little girl if they ever remastered any of the first 3
It took me so many years to come to terms with the fact that we would never see the follow up to the cliffhanger in logans shadow.
Honestly though, saying he's been in a coma for 18 years could make for a great plot
Ahhhhh! You captured the graceful ballet of the majestic taser perfectly with that musical track! Superb work people! As always.

That ending was delightful.
Thank you for your outstanding work on this forgotten and underated master piece that was Syphon Filter. To this day, I still play the original game at least once a year, on my original CD from back in the days wich I got a bit later on after its release on my 13th birthday.

The only Open world Game I Played Twice.
@@TheVisualDigitalArts Yeah It was really fun, I even platiumed the game on PS4 and 100% it on Steam. Such a shame, that Days Gone didn't receive a sequel.
According to Jim Ryan, the game wasn't a success because it didn't get a 90 on metacritic despite its strong sales. And the reason why it didn't get a 90 because the game wasn't woke enough.
