  • One of the most significant aspects that make Jeet Kune Do and Wing Chun special is the trapping element. The ability to trap your opponent's arms or legs in order to gain an advantage, allowing you to strike them, is a key component. Here, Sifu Sign puts on a masterclass in trapping and demonstrates how to make it functional.

This is meant for "street fighting" No gloves on. You have to know how to trap and beginning of fight, grappling follow up or kicking. Most people dont understand that Trapping is from a static into a violent encounter and Rapid response.

I'm thinking at 2:12 you can still get an elbow to the face trying to punch low or he can sidestep you to his right while pushing your head down with the left palm and set up for a counter. This sequence seems to rely on the opponent having no skill in sticky hands or trapping exercises. In trapping contact is everything and as soon as it's broken a strike comes in (this is the reason it can be practiced blindfolded).

I agree with you, but in my experience NO ONE knows how to trap 😅. Even the idea of simply hitting when there's an opening is something my Sifu had to drill into me. I'd say almost everyone goes for a wind-up shot, giving someone like Sifu Singh an advantage

You are right that most people don't know what trapping is, much less how to do it. Yet, trapping is a drill, after all, that relies on a partner who understands the aim (flow) and benefit. Without that trapping ends quuckly as the other person begins to grab and hold on for survival. And if your partner doesn't understand how to do it you really get no bebefit from it...which is act and react.

Love all these trapping hand concepts. But they only work against untrained fighters. This stuff does not work in competition. Just watch Anderson Silva, who supposedly trained JKD with THE Dan Inosanto, the Grandmaster himself and Silva looks stupid slap fighting the opponents hands lol. This is not to take away from his wins. It just goes to show it doesn't work in competition. I would like to see one of these Sifu's put their concepts and skills to the test in the ring. I'm all for JKD, but it's time we realize that many of these trapping concepts only work against untrained fighters.
