just realized all bending styles in Avatar are based off of a form of Kung Fu.
    Waterbending - Tai Chi
    Earthbending - Hun Gar/Southern Praying Mantis Style(if you’re Toph)
    Firebending - Shaolin Kung Fu
    Airbending - Baguazhang
I knew they were all martial arts but all of them are forms of Kung Fu? Awesome

I find it interesting that when people talk about wing chun, Bruce's name gets into the conversation yet many don’t know is that Bruce went away from wing chun starting in 1965 and removed entirely in 1970. He even told his wing chun senior in 1969: "I’ve lost faith in the Chinese classical arts, though I still call mine Chinese, because basically all styles are products of land swimming, even the Wing Chun school. So my line of training is more toward efficient street fighting with everything goes, wearing head gear, gloves, chest guard, shin/knee guards, etc… I’ve named my style jeet kune do, reason for my not sticking to Wing Chun is because I sincerely feel that this style has more to offer regarding efficiency."

My late father practiced tai chi for over 60 years. Tai chi is more exercise than combat skills. It's much more for meditation and slow stretching and movements for health than hand to hand fighting.

One thing about Taijiquan is that it's a legit martial art. It was invented to be martial, using weapons, but it was severely washed out throughout the centuries and tailored for health. Nowadays I consider it a post martial art, where 5% is "martial" and 95% is "art". My Taijiquan instructor said he was actually more interested in Baguazhang, because it's less soft than Taijiquan. But students (especially elder) in my country are much more interested in learning Taijiquan than the less known Baguazhang.

Yes. I think it's better to be taught specific exercises, strikes, in ways like you would/can use them in combat, though, in a relaxed medium speed.
Then you can slow it all right down to fully understand the intricacies of each movement & link it all in.
Also training it FAST. Though need to get it smooth first.

you need a better picture for the dragon claw, it's actually a palm strike and then changes into the claw, not to mention the pinky and ring finger aren't so closed, the idea is once you strike or block with the palm, you want to change it into the claw so you can catch the opponents body, pulling him in for a second strike or take down. very similar to the tiger claw but not as forceful of a grab, more like a hook catching the pray.

    Neat video!
Obviously there are LOTS of Kung Fu styles, so he didn’t cover all of them, but this is very informative.
I used to do Eagle Claw Kung Fu(not included in the video), and now I do Wing Chun.
My favorites on this list are probably Shaolin Kung Fu and Wing Chun.
I’m surprised he didn’t mention Wushu though. Jet Li does that.
Technically Wushu means martial art. It refers mostly to Chinese martial arts but the term is most often associated with Chinese martial arts mixed in with gymnastics.
The term Kung Fu itself means learning/ practicing a skill through hard work.
However, it’s most often used to describe Chinese martial arts, but technically if you’re practicing music or practicing cooking then you’re technically doing Kung Fu. So, literally everything you do could be Kung Fu. It was originally spelled Gung Fu which is closer to the Chinese pronunciation, but for some reason Kung Fu with the “k” became the more popular spelling.

Honestly, his failure to even note the grappling focus of Tai Chi is disappointing. Feels like he half-assedly read wikipedia articles on each style.
But hey, at least he seenms able to differentiate between buddhist and taoist styles.

If you're filming an "explanation" video of Tai Chi, you shouldn't bring Zhang Sanfeng with you.
Beijing's Chen style Tai Chi was the beginning, and Zhang Sanfeng was added later as a legend.
Even Chen style Tai Chi was originally under the influence of Shaolin Quan. Not wutang.

    • @robertmallory1877

Actually there were Kung Fu styles before Shaolin, those were what originated from India. Shaolin was going down hill when animal styles were developed to embrace both the soft and the hard. Strangely both the Northern Shaolin and Southern Shaolin did this separately around the same time in part based on Kung Fu outside the Temples which is why there are differences in their animal styles and what lineup of animals each featured. The Southern Shaolin did it before the Northern Shaolin and their styles still retain this aspect whereas there are many Northern styles that don't mimic animals at all!

Earlier than the Chinese styles for sure but the earliest Greek combat sports had their influence spread as far as India courtesy of Alexander the Great and company. I'd say India improved on them quite a bit. What I am not clear on is how old the Silat systems of Indonesia. Malayasia, Java etc. are!
