Brilliant Simon. I really enjoy your historical knowledge of your finds and informative shots of what they first looked like. I am a fan! I’m a subscriber so I have lots of footage to enjoy. 1604! Awesome find
Bro, you have such a good eye, I need glasses just to find my glasses! And I'm only 54 going on 45! Kidding, I hurt my eyes in a welding accident 20 years ago so now I can see through women's intentions!
Of all the video's you have made I this one is my favourite one so far. That is the most excited I have ever seen you be. It's probably a good thing the tide limited your time there or you would have been late getting to your destination 😁. I know I would have had a lot of difficulty leaving at all.
I love how excited you are! I get that same feeling when I’m sea glass hunting and come across a good ole run of it! I go to a place that was once a boot legging spot during the prohibition era. I get a kick outta collecting bits of history
Indeed mister. If ever you find yourself in foggy Nothern California I’d be delighted to take you out collecting. No camera though, it’s a secret spot 🤫
Almost unbelievable Si!! Very exciting, so many awwwsomeee finds! I've been very unwell lately and have had the pleasure of learning about so much from you and your friends; this video has to be one of my favourites so far! The quality and passion of your work are invaluable 'extras' considering all that you are already doing to save and share our own, almost lost, history. It's epic! Thank you!
I could pic pic pic pick up those lovely copper nails OH I am Thrilled... Si and Nic I need to make you a leather holster for a skinny Spray bottle so you can spray the coins and NOT RUBBY THEM
Copper nails galore!!! and the old coins are so special.. I think I saw more as you were scanning the nails. But, yes 5 pounds of copper is not to be trifled with! Great hunt. Can not wait for the next one.
Si ! You HAVE found a lovely sort if metal dump there. Definitely worth a few visits to sort out what us hiding in there ! Congrats on your rose farthing and hammered (?) Sixpence. Very nicely made coin. Looks like the two sides of the coin are weathering at different rates, cos one side is peeling away from the other ! What a good day out you have had !
To me any penny from the 1800's is an awesome find! I would have picked up as many of the copper nails as I could. I think they are pretty cool. I am curious Si, Have you tried getting your fishing magnets on the foreshore?just by holding your magnet above the surface of the ground or just gently putting in down on the ground, while holding the rope to see if there is any metallic pull? Or just to see what the magnet may pick up? I have been wanting to see if anything, that a very strong magnet could possibly bring metal items up from underneath the mud. Just curious thank you for sharing your life and talent with all of us! the ground
Super cool video. I saw your video with your homemade bowl decorated with brass nails and have been thinking of other uses for them. Can’t wait to get back to england and hope I can find as many nails. They would look great as decoration on a piece of furniture.
Fantastic hunt - probably worth you collecting the copper for scrap if nothing else? When Nicola and Clem where there the other day, it was the same - weird, eh? Super coins! Lucky you! Happy hunting 😉👍
These cheeky TH-camrs!! (That's why I like it when they put the date on videos!!) I suppose some of the nails & staples would have come from long-gone structures or wrecks, but I guess it shows how much stuff was lost during boat-building - perhaps there's been some new dredging to stir this all up? I also wondered how come so much was still around, as back in the Day, the original Mudlarkers would have been looking for just this kind of convertible loot, as you were saying why the stuff wasn't saved to be melted back down? Is a conundrum...? But good you can share! 😉
They are doing a lot of construction on the river for the new Super Sewer, so I guess the flow of the river is changing bringing new things to light, could be a good thing for us Mudlarkers!
It was so nice hearing someone saying a thruppeny bit, instead of a three penny coin. Lol I loved getting a thruppeny but when I was a kid, even better a sixpence, known to us as a tanner, not sure why!!?
The sixpence was issued back in the time of Edward 6th due to the debasement of coins. Coins at the time were supposed to contain enough silver to represent their actual value. Thrupences were a very useful coin at the time but the sixpence gradually took over. A mister 'Tanner' was the designer back in the reign of George ll so that is perhaps the origin of the word, tanner, or an even older Anglo-Roman origin from a corruption of a word meaning 'a little piece'. Love the word - tanner.
those copper nails could have been used to hold the copper on the bottom of ships from the 1700"s to help keep weed from sticking as easily and to increase the speed of those ships.
Those nails....Copper is worth real money: you could recycle them in your craft too. Unbelievable luck! Do you ever get a really tired back or knees bending and squatting all the time?
@@Sifinds I live in the US but, I've been to England in the past. I've walked along the Thames many times, wandered old grave yards in London and in the counrtyside and hiked through many fields enjoying your beautiful country. One day I hope to visit again.
No idea. I just loved the label so I bought it, ages ago, and now it's my go-to. Never had a hangover with it either, even after drinking the entire bottle. I get it from my local supermarket. www.google.com/search?q=jam+shed+shiraz&rlz=1C1CHBF_enIM800IM800&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjavrDJqZPeAhWGOcAKHb69DkwQ_AUIDigB&biw=1366&bih=657#imgrc=BDEeDjJ67nXHMM:
Only 5.5 lbs of copper? I'd be there with a flat-bottom boat or raft loading more of that and all the scrap iron and just going up and down the river all day collecting it. One could probably live off of the scrapping proceeds and you'd be able to keep all the cool coins and other good stuff that was found with it. What are the watercraft rules in London?
Yes I believe so, check out www.PLA.co.uk for more details. You will need an export licence if you plan to take anything older than 50 years out of the country.
Are you allowed to bring a small screen or some kind of sifting device under your mudlarking permit? Seems like that might be a good way to collect more nails without having to pick each one up by hand.
Everything that turns up on the shore they is always a few of them and in multiples. I think its the specific gravity of the precious metals. All of the metals there can be reycled, I would totally pick it up and take it to a recycling center and make money for my little expeditions and batteries!
Perhaps what one of the other commenters replied was the answer to all the copper coins. Some of the properties nearby were bombed and were just bulldozed aside to make room for rebuilding after WWII. If the building was burnt and demolished, that might make sense as to why they did not recycle the contents.
Congrats on the coins. I'd be picking up all the copper, brass, lead and other non-ferrous metals. Copper & brass in particular and going back to the same area after a few tides. US $2 per pound. Not worth the trouble for only a few pounds though there is likely to be far more than that along the banks .
Si- you are one eagle eyed man! My gracious what a great bunch of finds. I don't understand the load of nails. Was it usual for skips to dump trash in the Thames or could it be lost parcels from boats? Hope you reveal the date of lead tokens in part two.
nlo114 possibly, they did break up lots of ships in the area, so I think they just pulled them out and threw them away. I've seen huge piles of encrusted nails too, they really didn't care about the loss

Quality finds !! Thanks for sharing.
Thankyou for sharing.
Those copper nails would make beautiful furniture or shelving of drift wood. Or other types of frames for the finds like shadow boxes and such.
Yes, I'm still thinking what creative thing I can do with them... hmm

Chill Bill Thanks dude!
Did you find the ring for them people ? Thanks
Cool finds. If London counsel cleaned up the Thames they would make a fortune. I'm glad they don't though or our past would be gone forever !
Oh it's just great int it we get so excited like we have found a jewelry shop. great video it made me
want to get out there.
At the 9:56 mark to just the right of your thumb and forefinger.....is that the short blade and hilt from a bayonet??!

Vids are top notch Si, staggering finds! I'd go back there mate..
Kevin Cox I did, a week later but it was covered in sand again and very hard to work
“A rose farthing. there’s the rose on that side, and there’s charles fart hing on the other side….” 🪙 😂
Having TH-cam BINGE and your first on the list.
The Man With The Hat Haha hope you enjoy them! You'll be sick of me by the time you see me!
😊👍 That's $13.75 worth of scrap copper in that bowl of nails. Not bad! ☺
what do you do w the copper nails?
I knew you Brits were a tough lot, but tucking into a big bowl of copper nails is impressive. Bon appetite.
Will Be Jamming 😂 🤣
Si if a mobile power magnet went along the Thames banks it would clear a lot of iron and steel
And it would be better for the environment
Good morning for you there Si look forward to the ring hunt in part 2

great finds !
Nailed it.

With all those copper nails, obviously from a shipwreck, there's bound to be treasure near. Aaarrr matey!

Thats a lot of awesome finds!
So how old were the tokens? , I didn't see the date
When you found the farthing was that a clear marble , at 3::09 right above the farthing?
Friday night, bottle of Merlot and Simon. That's how I roll! Nice finds you jammy geezer.
Shelly Rourke snap! Although I'm on Cabernet Sauvignon 🍷 cheers!

Why did you not pick up the hand forged Rosebud spike, dates to the 1600's.
Collect all the copper nails, melt them down and cast something cool.

I've enjoyed that, Si. You missed two coins though. :=) And a nice padlock ; - O

Where? : ) . Name the time...
Si-finds 7:55-8:00, and 12:42.
Way cool!!
Hi Si ! Found you on Nicola's channel. 🤗
Can you take metal in for scrap to cash over there? Recycle it.... I so love the scrap it would make such cool art
Wyld Child Yes we can, but I plan to use the small interesting pieces to make some robot sculptures from one day
it would be really interesting if you could do a video of taking items into the Museum and having the commentary from them on your items too :)
I keep wanting to scream out "STOP Go back you missed something". I'm sure I saw some interesting finds myself. :-)
Nice hammered, tokens. plenty of copper nails, just as well you weren't detecting, would have been a headache!! HH GL
I love your accent.Watch that finger for blood poison.
Maybe an old sail awl.
Just think of all the coins that are buried just beneath the surface that you don't see...........
Could it be that you were at an old shipwright's? The copper nails would be used on the copper bottoms of old sailing ships.
SI! At 9:55 I yelled, "What's that in the top right of the screen???!"
Shelly Rourke No idea... lump of rusty tat
I'm good at tat-spotting. It's my forte.
looks like something interesting

Were the copper nails used on the copper plating on the hull of ships?
short copper nails often used for attaching copper sheathing to vessels.... maybe a boatbuilder worked on that stretch of shoreline...
With that much copper left on the shore you could easily make a mint on recycling them if they arnt of much historical importance
Si- you are one eagle eyed man! My gracious what a great bunch of finds. I don't understand the load of nails. Was it usual for skips to dump trash in the Thames or could it be lost parcels from boats? Hope you reveal the date of lead tokens in part two.
They are from the ships that were broken up nearby
I believe the copper nails are from small boats or even large ships
Amazing yet again Si. So how did you get the Rose farthing looking so clean? Was that 5lb of nails just that video? Looking forward to part 2.
Chris Morgan Cheers Chris. Cleaned it using electrolysis. And yes 5.6lb of copper nails. My finds bag almost broke!
Si-finds any possibility of a video showing the electrolysis process, please.
Chris Morgan I have one coming soon actually!
I love those rose farthings . And it is hard to get a good one.
hard yakka Yes it is! Thanks for watching!
Copper nails for nailing sheet copper to wooden sailing ships
maybe colect n scrap the metal from 1 section and see what appears after?.gl
Most of the copper nails look used, so could it possibly be some shipwright's scrap-bin that fell overboard many years ago?
nlo114 possibly, they did break up lots of ships in the area, so I think they just pulled them out and threw them away. I've seen huge piles of encrusted nails too, they really didn't care about the loss
good scrap metal price on copper every nail is probably worth digging up
What a great eye you have to see the small 1700 coin it blended in with the sand so well. You were ment to find it....
My dad has a coin from 1721 and I’m trying to find out a bit more about it
