Can people from other countries come to London and do mudlarking?
@ not anymore
I adore your videos! You and Nicola and the Peakys have kept me wonderfully engaged and entertained for a while now so thank you. You're a natural. 'Luv da mud mug for me marnin' coffee', said in her best brogue. 👏 👌 😎

@@torunstiernbielke7518 No you have to have a Licence to mudlark I think it lasts 3 years and maybe a wait to get one. And you have to show the authorities on the Thames what you have found.
Mudlarking on the Thames is on my bucket list. I am an American and finding such "treasures" is out of the question since we are a "young" country. Enjoying seeing your discoveries!😀
What about the ancient people's of the Americas? I bet there are lots of fascinating finds of the countries first nations
Need a licence to mudlark on the Thames. If I lived a few miles closer I’d be there everyday ☺️😎
When you did the close up of the beautiful swan, I realized that I have never seen a swan close up. It was really cool to see! I look forward to your wonderful videos on Sundays. Congratulations on the Roman coin-how exciting!

We have black swans in Australia! Gorgeous birds
It's amazing that these things are just sitting around for hundreds of years, untouched. Cool to have a bit of learning on them when you can. My favorite bird is a crow! I just love them so much
Cheers Mudlover! 👍🏻🐾🧡
Great video of finds. Those birds are beautiful. Raised finches and parakeets. Learned loads from watching them. Most shocking thing was a female finch laid 3 eggs and hatched. Came home from work to find her nose down in another nest dead. Worried about feeding babies, was always told parents would not feed them if humans smells were on the babies. Heard a noise and the daddy was feeding them. So surprised.
@@cathybrewer8958 blimey poor birds
Males do help feed their babies.
The thing about the smell of human handling will stop parents feeding them is a common myth. You can safely handle babies that fall out of nests and put them back.

Great mudventure!! 😁 Love the Roman coin! 👍 My favorite bird is the Raven. I used to live off grid mid BC Canada before I moved back here to Sweden. Over there, we had more Ravens than crows, along with big bald Eagles and of course lots of other birds, including Hummingbirds, which every summer we were a banding station and would capture the little fluttering things and either band them or, register whatever stood on the band they already had. Was quite interesting to be able to see where they were originally banded. We had quite a few that had been banded by us, since they do come back to where they were born.
When it comes to Ravens, I've "had" a couple of them to care for when they'd for whatever reason get injured. Gotta be careful with your fingers though!! 😳🤯 I got bit once and even if I was wearing a thick leather glove... Oh my that hurt!! 😣 After having cared for them and fed them for awhile, they did become quite "friendly". Not tame in any way but, they didn't mind if you stroked their feathers and they loved it when I'd sit out in their large pen and sing/hum softly to them. More than one would tuck their head under a wing and fall asleep. First I thought it was due to that they felt that my "singing" was so god awful that they tried to cover their ears, so they wouldn't have to listen to me... 😂 But was told later that it was due to that they enjoyed it and that they trusted me enough to fall asleep...
@@solanisomeni how sweet x
🤣🤣 about the ravens falling asleep. I picked up an injured cardinal once with heavy leather gloves. I was moving it to some bushes to keep our cat from finding it. It glared at me & bit my finger. I could feel the beak. I immediately understood why it’s part of the “Angry Birds”!
"How can you see with that thing on your face?" 🤣 The Swan looked most miffed!! My favourite birds are Ravens, Crows & Magpies. The Corvid family are such amazing, smart birds. The crows round my area are almost the size of cats! Great video. I loved the Roman coin. Living in Hertfordshire has me fascinated by anything Roman! ❤️
I love your Tiffany lock! Your videos make me happy, you’re always so positive about your finds even if others might be disappointed with them. That Roman coin is very exciting.
Omg, the birds are gorgeous!
My favorite birds are owls, and this past spring I was lucky enough to have a screech owl in my nesting box! I have a camera inside, and got to watch & videotape 3 owlets hatch and grow. They all fledged, and I’m hoping I have another owl next spring!

I went to your 'stink pot' vid and got to the part with the lead token you were trying to figure out. You're throwing out guesses and I'm yelling "SQUIRREL!! IT'S A SQUIRREL!" and you answered, "No, it's a 4", and I said, "Oh, you're right." (Sidebar: I had never actually heard of a stinkpot before, although it was something popular for us kids to yell at each other for names. I am constantly learning bits of history from you, Si! Thank you! (And I wonder why no one ever finds lead seals on this side of the pond, or at least I've never heard of them; there was certainly trade over here from the 1600s on.) Your old lady fan from the States...Cheers, Si!
I have to say, my favorite bird has to be the Cardinal ( here in Canada ). Brilliant red, with jet black face, shy but curious, they stand out in the winter snow. Always love seeing them at my feeders.
@@franceshendry5656 they sound amazing!
I live in Illinois, and we have Cardinals year round. ❤❤❤
My favorites are the owl and the red-tailed hawk. I've been lucky enough to rescue both -- one of the great treasures given to me in this life. Found them separately at different times standing beside the road after a car strike. Both survived and went back to the wild, thanks to the avian rescue center I took them to.
Thank you for being a great human! I love listening to owls. I always look for hawks & count them on trips.

What a fun video. Congratulations on finding that Roman coin!
My favorite bird is the California Scrub Jay. They are an extremely vocal group. I took to feeding them roasted peanuts (the nuts have to be roasted for nutritional reasons). It was a slippery slope. They started showing up at my door at all hours squawking and kicking up a fuss. They’d show their displeasure when there weren’t any fresh nuts available, so I’d spring into action and start roasting. They were impatient, strutting along the porch railing until I arrived with a fresh pan and then would never wait for the nuts to cool.
It was fun, but they were very demanding and also ingrates. Haha… the things we do.

Looks like a weapon to me!
Looks like a weapon to me!
I hope I'm wrong but they sell antlers just like that in Pets At Home! They're sold as an alternative to dog bones 😂
As a person who makes things, and pays attention to minutia, the blade that cut that antler, had a very large and sharp notch in the surface of the blade. You can see three places where the notch has traveled along the face of the cut, and all with the same action, so it has left a raised bead along the cut face. All of the beads are exactly the same height and width.
And the beads, and other tool lines all have a slight, and uniform curve to them. You get that when pushing a blade by hand, your hand naturally curves along the arc of a cut. You see it in wood working, have to guard against it if you want to not leave curved marks with a chisel or plane.
I think that was a flint blade that cut that. A metal blade that has a notch in it, the notch probably isn't sharp, but a flint blade the chips and notches are razor sharp.
@@uncletiggermclaren7592 that’s a great shout. I saw that ridge myself, but didn’t think as deeply about it as you did. So let’s hope it was cut by a flint!
Nice description!
@@Sifinds I absolutely with all my heart hope it was cut with a flint, I want you, and all of us through you, to have the joy and excitement of having found a stone-age tool.
And looking at it, I think exactly that, I think it was some sort of every-day, workaday, almost disposable tool, that a neolithic "Englishman" made with a practical, minimal, every-day couple of hacks with his practical, yeah-got-some-chips-on-the-blade-I'll-make-a-new-one-later flint cobble that ITSELF he had picked up, given it some shrew licks with a hammer stone, and turned into a tool.
Their tool kit was amazing, Couple of rocks here, shed antler there, need a rope, an hours work with some nettles and "Robert is your Mothers Brother".

Well, that swan didn't look too happy about his/her face😆 .Your Ronan coin is awesome! A fastener or an earring? Pot with holes- maybe for pouring hot liquids, or maybe for incense or some similar room deodorizer? My favorite birds are the eagle and the owl
While watching this as you ascertained what that find was, I remembered buying as a nipper 60 years ago for five shillings an old George III penny. You then showed exactly the same penny- how weird is that! I have dug mine out- it is less good condition and is dated 1806. A couple of years later- and I had an extensive collection of great silver coins, we moved and my mother got a new cleaning lady- and she stole all of them- including the George IV crown my grandmother gave me for passing the Eleven Plus! She did not bother with my coppers! We also had a huge lead ingot we made from melting all the lead pipes from our kitchen rebuild- and she even stole that- it was bloody heavy as we melted the pipes on a fire into a very large metal paint pot- four pints of solid lead! Old alcoholic witch stealing from kids but my mother never made an issue of it!
@@NickRatnieks wow what a story and what a good example your mum is. Perhaps she knew the cleaner was having difficulties
Even if she was having difficulties you don’t take other peoples things that’s called stealing last time I checked if she was desperate maybe she could of asked for help no wonder the worlds the state it’s in when people make excuses for bad behaviour
@@Pablo-cz1js My mother thought she was an alcoholic but in my opinion, it's a pretty low thing to do- to steal from kids but we know that addicts have no shame. The sad thing as that a lot of good people helped me build my coin collection and this woman stole it.
Wonderful history… thousands of years worth. It cracks me up seeing fellow Americans get excited over 300 yr old relics and your finding 2000 yr old antiquities.
I love that bird feeder at the end of the video. I need one in my garden. We have scrub/bush turkeys here and the buggers get into the seed meant for the smaller birds. We have doves, pale faced rosellas and rainbow lorikeets we encourage to our yard. Not to forget the kookaburras, currawongs and butcher birds. Also have a couple of water dragons that have joined the yard pack. Got to love nature in all its varieties.
Feed the birds! Help the world Enjoy x
My favourite bird is the Aussie Galah - bright pink and soft grey, and they are very cheeky, friendly larrikins - typically Aussie, really! Like most of our birds in Oz, they make a terrible screechy squawking sound - which only goes to prove that no one has it all - you can't be beautiful and have a lovely voice as well! The only Aussie bird we have with a lovely melodious, caroling call, is the magpie - I love them too, they just aren't as pretty as the galah.
@@pollywaffledoodah3057 so lucky!
Our galahs are the only birds I have ever seen that will walk backwards down a tree instead of taking flight and coming back to the lower branch they want to reach.

That you find Roman coins is mind-blowing to me! Here in the States there are, of course ancient Native American sites where artifacts are found. Fabulous Roman coin! I have to admit I'd never heard of that emperor but there's quite a few I'm not familiar with. Those green parakeets (here we call them Indian parakeets) are all over Athens now. When I moved here 14 years ago, there was just a colony of them in the National Gardens near parliament, but now they're all over the city, even in my neighborhood in the east suburbs. I'm told they're descended from birds that belonged to the royal menagerie before the king was expelled. Unlike other invasive species, they don't seem to do any harm, other than the ruckus.
Interesting Si,as usual, thank you for sharing this, loved the Roman, 😊

So many really interesting treasures you both found on this mudventue, Si. Love all the different cloth seals, tokens and various coins. My favorite bird here in Washington state are the various types of jays, scrub jays, blue jays and Stellar's jays. We put out feeders all year round along with suet cages so we get a lot of scrub jays. We've seen a couple blue jays and one Stellar's Jay. Stellar's jays tend to stay more in the trees but we see them often on our 23 mile trip to the closest city of size. The one bird I hate seeing at my feeders is Pacific Coast band-tailed pigeons. They are really large pigeons that live in the forest. They tip the feeders over and spill the food on the ground because they are too big to eat out of them. They are also very aggressive and chase all the songbirds away.

I love the parakeets.
The Quaker Parakeets thrive in New York City which I did not know when I lived there. I didn’t learn until I moved back to Canada that there are colonies on City Island in NYC, including on the street that I lived on… How could I not have noticed????? They build huge nests on telephone and electricity poles and are quite noisy (though I can’t say that I would have minded the noise, myself). I can only think that the colonies were smaller when I was there.
The city used to destroy the nests but I think now that, unless the nests pose an actual danger of fire from being built on electricity poles, they leave them alone.
There’s debate about how they arrived in NYC. The arguable story is that a crate of them was being unloaded at one of the airports and broke open. That may or not be so but it’s the one most quoted origin story.
Interesting thanks 🦜🦜🦜

Living in such a young nation, America, I'm always so shocked when I find a coin dating back to the Roman period. As a metal detectorist myself, that would be a dream coin, but I have to settle for a silver Spanish Reale coin. I would love to dig up either a Roman coin or an onion bottle someday. Onion bottles are extremely rare due to how thin the glass was they were made out of.
