I think it's rare to see compassion displayed like this because it's deemed unprofessional for a judge to cry at the bench.
To say it's rare to see a compassionate judge is naive and unfair.
It's rare for crimes like this not to affect all the professionals involved and many suffer greatly in silence.

But also for a man that threw his life away. Karma always has a way of coming full circle. Noreen keep in mind when you take the stand. Your ask to speak the whole truth so help you God. @Lynette Scribner The judge is bound by "legal sentencing guidelines" passed by our city council, mayor figure, all the way up the National level...our Congress. Vote please. There is only so much, even a good judge like this guy, can do. Bound by the law! So if we want that to change (like me) then we need to vote for people with those kinds of values. People that Share your values! And people that share different or similar value--they need to vote in that person for them.

Now I don’t cry myself when hearing of other’s suffering, that doesn’t mean I don’t feel their agony and the horror of the situation, I just don’t react physically because…that’s not how my body works, I suppose. But crying when presented with the intense suffering of other people is a common human characteristic, and one that shows empathy. Empathy is arguably the most important attribute for a judge to have, has how can you effectively asses how a person should be sentenced if you cannot understand the suffering caused and, simultaneously, how the defendant felt/is feeling. Crying for many people is just a result of emotion, and cannot be controlled. It’s not an intentional thing, it’s just a normal response when hearing and feeling the agony of someone else.

He had to have both legs amputated at age 40, and a man who does not have his legs, just can't be a normal person. It was a terrible situation. He died at age 47 from massive blood clots. For a judge who represents the law to quote a fictional book called the Bible should result in his immediate removal and lifetime ban of ever working in the justice system. It is a clear and willful violation of the separation of church and state. The reason you separate church and state is so your government isn’t based on a fairy tale. Figures this happened in Texas. The state that brought us Enron, Halliburton, Lifted trucks, Trumptards and the Bush family. It’s time Texas was removed from the union. I say give it back to Mexico.

"I don't care how the Word of God applies here. This is a courtroom, not a church, so don't preach to me."
Our freedom of religion depends entirely on the separation between religion and the law, and a seperation of religion and politics. It wasn't God who did that evil. Things happen that we don't like or understand but it isn't gods fault for the evil people do. When I was younger something happened really evil to my loved one and blamed God for along time and finally am realizing that he had nothing to do with it and with that understanding has lifted alot of the hate and anger I had don't get me wrong I still need more healing but I know God is the one helping me thru it along with my loved ones

I agree with you Chrystal. My husband and I lost our 6 1/2 month old son many years ago & blaming God was our initial reaction. But the God we know healed us & we turned our tragedy into a testament of God's love! God Bless you!

OMG, this was touching! I can't imagine how the judge has to go through all the steps of the case and feel every emotion for the family and victim. What is wrong with this world? People react to kill and not have any conscience and be able to live with that?? I think this judge did all he could and even said he had no pleasure in sentencing anyone! Thank you Judge Chasteen!

He was not the murderer or involved with the murder itself. He was charged with and convicted on 4 counts related to helping the murderer cover up the crime afterwards. That's why the judge made sure to the sentence on each count was consecutive, so he would still stay in prison for a long time.
