@@mic6434 True. Diana was the voice that everyone loved. Pretty voice ... however Flo rocked and added so much to their sound and energy. When she left, it threw things off. The sound changed ... the dynamic changed.
Yes Mary and Flo. Hot Hot Hot. The back-up was equal to Diana's lead. The Supremes were top and all three were essential to their overwhelming success.
I never get tired of watching this clip, The Supreme SUPREMES are totally sublime. The "Wall of Sound" Mary and Florence provide behind Ross is just everything. Ballards' soaring 1st soprano cuts through all of the backing orchestration and the fact that whatever microphone she is singing into is obviously turned down. Mary is forever the bedrock, that contralto is devine. Diana is a STAR and is the STAR of the group, but is truly amongst equals with Wilson and Ballard. There is just nothing better. The live performance of "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" should be enshrined in the Smithsonian and the Grammy Hall of Fame. It would be a true gift to the legions of Supremes' fans for at least Diana and Mary to unite at least for a few public appearances just to solidify the legacy...there is nothing like the SUPREME SOUND. RIP FLORENCE BALLARD!
I disagree. The recorded version sounds much more soulful than any live version I’ve ever heard. Especially later, when they would speed up the beat for the live versions. The recorded version just had that Motown touch, from the big “wooo” that opened the song (courtesy of Mary) all the way down to the beat. The only time I’ve heard them come even close to a live performance of this song that rivaled the recorded version was on the Mike Douglas show in 1965 (probably because it was just released).
Ronald McFondle There are many instances of the Supremes not actually singing “live” on their performances. A couple that come to mind are their performances of “Come See About Me” on Shindig and almost any performance on the Hollywood Palace (but especially noticeable on their “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” performance in 1966). But that had more to do with ease of production for the TV shows than anything else. The Supremes were definitely very talented and were ground breaking for future generations of Black women. Unrivaled, for sure!
@@LeimertDreamer Sometimes Motown would rerecord the backing track to fit the time alloted for the broadcast and only the lead singer would sing live. This is apparent in several performances by not only DR&S but The Temptations. But, you are right, Dick Clark made it the standard to "lyp-synch" the recordings. The worst case I have seen of this was when I saw The Shirelles live at Palisades Amusement Park and the main lead singer, Shirley Alston Reeves, wasn't there and their second lead singer, Doris Jackson "mouthed" the words. There is even a video on TH-cam where Shirley does the same for a song Doris led!
Wow...was Florence Ballard that physically taller than Mary and Diana? Don't get me wrong, because Mary and Diana were beautiful. But Flo...my goodness gracious laawd a'mighty! She was stunning!
If you find the Ed Sullivan clip in the pink chiffon, Flo looks so cute in it. It's my fave Flo moment. And Somewhere on Hollywood Palace also - great Flo & Miss Ross moments.
I believe Flo was 5'7, Diana 5'5 and Mary 5'4 1/2. If she wore 4 to 5 inch heels, that would put her at 5'11 almost 6 ft! LOL You can distinctly see she's taller! I love all three though!!!!!!
I've ALWAYS thought they sounded better singing standards than their own material. They got a chance to show off how well they harmonize proving how talented they ALL were.
They sounded equally good singing their hits and standards, which is not an easy feat. How many other artists of the time sound good singing rock and roll, and then something Judy Garland would sing? Diana's voice was convincing for many styles, which is one of the reasons they became so popular the world over.
@@roberta.llofgrenjr.8321 right. everyone has their own preference. I prefer Flo. I like Diana Ross on songs where she's singing in her lower register. The high voice is too much for my ears.

The best female group of all time. Many of these performances are available on Diana Ross and The Supreme's definitive collection DVD. Michael great contribution.
The truly unique thing about this Hullabaloo gig was that millions of TV viewers saw for the first time that The Supremes could sing such a classic standard as "You're Body Till Somebody Loves You".This appearance spurred dozens of other TV shows dates in which the producers wanted the Supremes singing standards as much or even more than their own hit records. It also led to the Supremes being booked at the Copa in NY. Many thanks for posting this super rare classic TV treat, Mr. Shaw.
These ladies captures, exemplified, presented, beauty, grace, character. Every girl wanted to sing/be a supreme, what a legacy of Excellence the trio left us!!!!!
Thanks for including "Back In My Arms Again" with the classic lines about Mary and Flo, which the Supremes play to the hilt! This has always been one of my favorite songs and the only thing that could have made this better would have been if this were in color!
This is very cool. I've always been a fan of Diana Ross, but I never knew much about the Supremes except some of the songs I've heard over the years. I can see why they were so special. They stand out. Their harmony is tight and they're very sophisticated and beautiful. Diana kind of reminds me of a 1960's model in this video. I'm guessing they were around 21 here since Diana is around 73 now. I'll have to check out more of these.
LMAO ,..Come down to earth.... Diana is singing lead and for a good reason... Her back up singers had the typical black female sound, unlike Diana.… Just saw her on January 6th at 75 and she is still unbelievable and classy !

I love this video, I come back regularly, all the girls look so happy, especially Flo and Mary. I don't care what people say about them and the famous fallout, they were happy here, they loved to perform and be on stage, you can see it on all of their faces, they shine like the sun. Also you can catch Diane slacking at 6:44, she's watching everyone else sing and isn't aware the camera is on her lol Also Mary is absolute queen walking past everyone and placing her self right at the front (7:10) :D
@@ceeceetracey9839 So true, although the hits kept coming so all looked fine to the general public. In retrospect we learned what went on behind the scenes.
"I listened once to my friends advice but it's not gonna happen twice..each time we make romance I'll be grateful for a second chance"..... such poetic prose such beautiful stanzas
Flo is clearly enjoying herself during this taping, and with her statuesque bearing, sense of fun and mischief and clear soprano, she damn near steals the show from Diana...easy to see why the Copacabana were gonna cancel the girls' show a year later when they heard Flo wouldn't be appearing... Berry had to personally reassure the Copa brass that Flo would be on stage.
+Malcolm Marshall AMEN BROTHER! Miss Flo had such stage presence! And there's something genuine about her smile and everything about her, Diana was fantastic (but ABSOLUTELY FAKE) and Mary was just cool enough for Diana not to see her as a threat, but Miss FLo was an undeniable POWERHOUSE singer and performer, too bad she wasn't really allowed to shine =(
rioboy13 Yes indeed. What puzzles me is Mary, so damn pretty, has surprisingly little stage presence, maybe a lack of confidence. Diana definitely has star charisma, but my lord she hams it up! Flo had the star quality too but you can see in her facial expressions such a likeable persona; Berry Gordy knew he had two potential superstars on his hands, and a few months after this Hullabaloo performance, he chose Diana over Flo officially when he pulled the plug on Flo's solo spot at the Copa.:(
+Malcolm Marshall That's because Diana having a sexual relationship with Berry is INDEED what put her on top. Diana and Flo were both Alpha Females, and you simply can't have 2 Queens in ONE house, (SPECIALLY WHEN YOU AIN'T BLOOD) so...Flo was simply tossed aside, because she REALLY thought all 3 Supremes were equals... (not the case). So Miss Flo was quickly and easily replaced by a MUCH more... "manageable" Cindy Birdsong. Miss Cindy KNEW DAMN WELL she wasn't coming in The Supremes as an equal member to Diana (maybe equal to Mary) but Mary herself had to "play ball" or else? they would have quickly replaced her sexy behind as well. See, these type of ego and line up changes can ONLY occur in non-sibling groups. Ok, like the Bee-Gees, no matter WHATEVER problems they might have had? the world knew the 3 brother line up of Barry, Morris and Robin, and would NEVER accept a replacement member. When Bonnie left The Pointer Sisters, they were trimmed to a trio (Ruth, Anita, & the late June) and remained that way because well... they were REAL SISTERS. Same thing with The Osmond Brothers; they've performed WITH and WITHOUT Donnie, but they sure as hell weren't about to get a replacement member. Musical chairs membership of singing groups can ONLY occur when the members are just friends.
rioboy13 Yeah, ur right about the family angle. Like w/ the Jacksons and Osmond's, they solo'd off Michael and Donny, but there would be reunions and stuff off and on in the future, Unlike the disastrous "Supremes Return to Love" reunion fiasco in 2000; Diana touring with Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence??? Come on, the public ain't stupid; nothing against those girls, and Scherrie was a fine singer, but just like 1967 when Cindy replaced Flo, it just wasn't the same anymore.
Oh, love the "Back In My Arms Again" performance too! Diana's uniqueness as the leader is so gorgeous. Her unique sound. Her unique femininity. Her unique glamour. There's just nothing like it! Mary and Florence are diamonds complimenting the rare gem, Diana.

berry Gordy told Diana to sing this song but she hates it but she did it anyway
@@mic6434 True. Diana was the voice that everyone loved. Pretty voice ... however Flo rocked and added so much to their sound and energy. When she left, it threw things off. The sound changed ... the dynamic changed.
I will always love THE SUPREMES!
I love them ......still in 2019!!!!! THE SUPREMES.....forever!!!
In 2022 also The Supremes forever
This performance is fire.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Diana Ross and the supremes voice is PERFECTION!!!!!
Yes this is when they were The Supremes
Wow! That background sounds soooo goood! Rest well Flo and Mary.
Yes Mary and Flo. Hot Hot Hot. The back-up was equal to Diana's lead. The Supremes were top and all three were essential to their overwhelming success.
Mary and Flo were very lucky. @@nighthawk4878
Few can aquire the level of success as a break of solo artist like
Dirty Diana, others breakout but everything Diana did was Fabulous ❤
Florence Ballard is so Beautiful !!!
So much talent in one stage! Im surprise that the stage didn’t collapsed
I really love Diana's voice it's so simple and clear
its really high pitch and can get annoying. I had to turn my speaker down.
Flo is so beautiful R.I.P QUEEN
They’re beautiful
The live version of Back In My Arms Again is so much better than the recorded one.
I think when they turned volume "down" to rise diana it took flavor from the "group" sound
"Back In My Arms Again" Live at the Copa 1965: th-cam.com/video/NI0KD4nQzQU/w-d-xo.html
Thinking of Miss Mary Wilson today.
Wow...was Florence Ballard that physically taller than Mary and Diana? Don't get me wrong, because Mary and Diana were beautiful. But Flo...my goodness gracious laawd a'mighty! She was stunning!
and she could sing!!!!
If you find the Ed Sullivan clip in the pink chiffon, Flo looks so cute in it. It's my fave Flo moment. And Somewhere on Hollywood Palace also - great Flo & Miss Ross moments.
That would not be difficult. Mary and Diana are quite short
I believe Flo was 5'7, Diana 5'5 and Mary 5'4 1/2. If she wore 4 to 5 inch heels, that would put her at 5'11 almost 6 ft! LOL You can distinctly see she's taller! I love all three though!!!!!!
Supa Kent Flo was 5'7. I remember her saying it in an interview.
The Supremes were just that SUPREME , Holland Dozier Holland knew talent when they saw it ❤️
I LOVE seeing old clips with the boom mics and all the props moving it just shows how real these shows were!
LOVE Flo's charisma here!
Oooo Yesssss me too Carlos
Awesome performance, love Diana's voice.
Mary was movie star beautiful !!
Mary dated the following entertainers at the height of the Supremes Fame; Tom Jones, Flip Wilson, Duke Fakir, Eddie Kendricks, Steve McQueen....
Amazing three young ladies who captured the world
This is so so good! Go Supremes 🎉🎉😎🕊️🕊️🕊️🌹🌹🌹🌹❤️
Diana has the most beautiful eyes to me
I've always loved her eyes too.
Seem a little googley eyed at times! But definitely has those sleepy sexy bedroom eyes.
I THINK THEY COULD SING ANYTHING , BUT I LOVE WHEN THEY HARMONIZE BETTER
Flo actually hated singing the standards and the broadway tunes, one of the reason they got rid of her.
The fantastic "There's A Place For Us" cd proves that totally. Umistakeable harmony personified 💓
@@raymondschmidt2003 They were magic the 3 original girl Flo--Mary--Diana....
Florence looks very happy during the whole video ✨💕 i love her so much ✨💕 RIP 2019
Wow perfectly harmonic but Diana's voice is the most distinctive
Kreatures100 That's your opinion!
+Robert A.l Lofgren Jr. thx a bunch!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a whiny voice :D
@@roberta.llofgrenjr.8321 right. everyone has their own preference. I prefer Flo. I like Diana Ross on songs where she's singing in her lower register. The high voice is too much for my ears.
The great iconic Diana Ross. Love this.
Florence Ballard is so beautiful 🥹 I love Diana and Mary but Florence was special. She had it all! Even with Diana singing lead your eyes are still glued to Florence. 🙏🏾
the greatest girl group period
THE THREE DEGREES
Oh,without a doubt...
No female group had that power in the music.
... since The Andrews Sisters. And (again, different styles) The Lennon Sisters, who could be quite multiverse.
@@ronruygrok8119 Ew, one hit 3 degrees can’t touch The Supremes!
The best female group of all time. Many of these performances are available on Diana Ross and The Supreme's definitive collection DVD. Michael great contribution.
This is my favorite performance of this song. Flo is having none of it during her close up!
Shaw.
The beauty of beautiful music back in time.
These ladies captures, exemplified, presented, beauty, grace, character. Every girl wanted to sing/be a supreme, what a legacy of Excellence the trio left us!!!!!
This is one of my favorite performances of The Supremes.
Flo. What a beautiful woman she is.
Yes, Mary was exceptional !!! I'm glad you agree!!! Because that was the normal line-up Florence(left) Mary (middle) and Diane (right)!!!
Mary looks gorgeous
I am LIVING for Mary's bottom note on this particular performance!!!
How I LOVE the Supremes!!! I love the new footage that keeps coming up!!
Me too 😊 Quinton 👍
they make you feel that they are part of your family and you are so proud of them!
This is greatness!!!! LOVE!
What an energizing performance with a stage full of entertainers who ACTUALLY HAVE TALENT! Gotta love the ORIGINAL Supremes! ❤️
Whew I got chills when Florence smiled in the camera’s direction. Her energyyyyyy
it is still astounding how Florence Ballard outsings Diane without even trying...so effortless.
HucklenGinger
She was just doing her job as the backup.
LMAO ,..Come down to earth.... Diana is singing lead and for a good reason... Her back up singers had the typical black female sound, unlike Diana.… Just saw her on January 6th at 75 and she is still unbelievable and classy !
Hahahaha.... Your delusional
Flo is loud...lol
They all contributed to a super Magical Supreme Group and the Public loved and adored them.
5:06 Um....it's their song. Ugh.....America. And Florence Ballard is a real one. Her face says it all! We love you Florence and Mary! Rest in Peace and Power!
AMEN
look at them enjoying what they do
Glad I found this rare footage of the Supremes. Love me some Diana Ross.
They were so wonderful here.............. thank you for posting :)
Another blast from the past i have the DVD of it. Thanks for sharing the video it brings back memories for me when i was a teenage girl in the mid sixties.
I love this video, I come back regularly, all the girls look so happy, especially Flo and Mary. I don't care what people say about them and the famous fallout, they were happy here, they loved to perform and be on stage, you can see it on all of their faces, they shine like the sun.
Also you can catch Diane slacking at 6:44, she's watching everyone else sing and isn't aware the camera is on her lol
Also Mary is absolute queen walking past everyone and placing her self right at the front (7:10) :D
Check out around 4:17-18 when Diana looks at Flo all crazy lolol. I dont know if the key was off or what.
They were THE stars at that moment and were amazing. More than amazing ... they were magical.
@@nighthawk4878 they really enjoyed performing and being on stage together. Things just went seriously awry after a short while. Its sad.
@@ceeceetracey9839 So true, although the hits kept coming so all looked fine to the general public. In retrospect we learned what went on behind the scenes.
I can hear Florence hitting those Soprano notes!
That was fabulous! Thanks for posting this so that many of us who weren't born back then can watch it. They were fantastic!
Yes! Thank you
They ruled the sixties, 12 number one records !! Hit after hit after hit.
DIANA ROSS!!!!!!!!!! Sheesh!
This woman is what made The Supremes supreme!
Frankie Avalon and The Supremes.
"I listened once to my friends advice but it's not gonna happen twice..each time we make romance I'll be grateful for a second chance"..... such poetic prose such beautiful stanzas
this is some grrrreat footage
The Queens of pop music 🎵 ♥️
Love how Diana gets caught looking back at Peter and Gordon @6:46 . Seems like she was smitten with Gordon as she pulls him closer in the finale!
I love the first song😍
Flo is clearly enjoying herself during this taping, and with her statuesque bearing, sense of fun and mischief and clear soprano, she damn near steals the show from Diana...easy to see why the Copacabana were gonna cancel the girls' show a year later when they heard Flo wouldn't be appearing... Berry had to personally reassure the Copa brass that Flo would be on stage.
are you serious?
I absolutely love the huge, brassy PETER MATZ arrangements in these 'Hullabaloo' performances.
So well said...........THANKU
