My first gig at 20yrs old as a union stagehand in Houston in 1978 was Dianna Ross in the summit. I was pushing a hamper of gear down the dressing rooms hallway after the show when I came to a group of small kids talking to Miss Ross. I stopped for a moment and the kids got done and moved away. As I passed her room she said hello how are you? I said fine thank you. She started asking me simple pleasant questions, just being very nice for about 5 minutes and said goodbye. When I tell this story to industry people they are surprised, they say she can be a real diva. Not to me, not that night. I retired from stage & film in 2007. I have many cool stories. I think most stars like it better when you treat them like people and not gush, etc. We are usually too busy to talk to talent, and it is not encouraged, but sometimes it just happens. Without telling every story, John Davidson, Carlos Santana, Dianna Ross, Tom Bosley, Marie Osmond, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Jackson, Carol Channing, and some I have forgotten were very nice to me over the years for no reason other than we are just human beings and it is so much easier to be nice, at least for me. Thanks Fil for bringing back the memories of Miss Ross.

Hi Fil! I have to admit I was one of those girls that had to do the hand signals! After all we wanted to be The Supremes! Knew all their songs! They just had it all! Cute hairdos...the clothes...we loved it all! Now I will be having that song in my head all night! That’s okay..a good one to sing! Thanks for taking me back to 65 again...met my hubby...got married...and bopped around the house singing some good music! Even the scandal of her with the head of Motown, Berry Gordy didn’t make us not like her! Remember this was a time when scandals were a big deal too! She survived, and went on to be very big on her own! ✌️

Very true.They were called the Supremes until 1967 when they were re named Diana Ross and the Supremes.When Ross left in early 1970 they went back to the Supremes.
Mary Wilson has kept the legacy alive. Diana Ross does not care about her legacy. She rarely talks about her Supremes days nor is she friendly with Mary Wilson, sadly.

Mary friend me on Facebook a few years ago because she remembered 4/5 year old who flirted with her. I'll be 60 in a month. I have talked with her a few times online, though not in person since that 2nd time I saw them sing in person. Also a significant force in keeping the legacy of the Supremes alive was Flo's sister Maxine, who died a few years ago. I got to know her a little through online conversations as well. A number of other Motown people I've talked with in person much more recently. I grew up until I was 13 in Detroit in University District where many Motown acts lived in or near.
Fil, I always appreciate your assessments. And when I think about the Supremes in the 60s, you don't become great unless you are great. There was just too much competition in that decade. The Supremes were great, and you're spot on. They had talent.

The reason I prefer reaction videos from professionals who either work in the business or teach the skill set professionally, is because I get to learn from them and enjoy the reaction. I would never occur to me to doubt or question a professional assessment about what is a live performance and what is prerecorded one. Thats why I am watching Fil, instead of some dude who has never been near a recording studio or performed live.
Lawrence Taylor I saw Bob Seger this past year at the United Center in Chicago. Sounded great in his seventies. He said he was from near Detroit and the soul sound from Detroit profoundly influenced his music over the years. Amazing singer. The saxophone live from On Mainstreet was beyond beautiful

I am obsessed with the original three Supremes! I was only about five when they hit it big but my older sister had a Supremes album that I still have. It's hard to tell that this was live, they performed it so close to the studio version.
Hiya. Having spent about 40 years in the TV and film industry, one of my favourite assignments was doing music shows. You are so right. When we were doing acts that did their music live, we spent hours hiding mic cables. Also sometimes the stage would be built with the ability to drop the cables through holes in the floor that led back to the control room. Was great fun and I met so many artists from the 70s to the 2000s. Keep it up!
Saw this great Motown machine many a time on Ed Sullivan Show. So professional with voices of angels. I'm a white guy born & raised on R&R but there was no mistake, this group was on the top of their game every time I saw them. Even had a crush on Diana. So many talented and awesome acts came out of Detroit during this time frame. Motown was truly a magical sound. thx for doing this. Baby Love was always one of my favs. Sheer talent and passion. Hard to beat that combo.

I grew up in Detroit. I once saw the Supremes at the airport. They were dressed up so fancy, Diana Ross was wearing a big fur coat (I abhor fur now) and I thought they were the most glamourous ladies I'd ever seen. It was so exciting!

I walked in the snow to see the Supremes in Cleveland at the Music Hall. I lived close to the venue. I LOVE them so much. My hubby went to see them again when we lived in another state.. Diana Ross came off the stage and walked up the same Aisle as we were in a balcony seat and he almost touched her hand..
Having listened to this song umpteen times as a kid (when it came out), I could tell right away that it was the actual track but that the voices sound a bit different partly, as you pointed out, because the balance among the three is more equal here. My god, their pitch is excellent, their togetherness virtually perfect--especially on the Stop!s--and their tone is so similar they sound almost like sisters. Great job, Supremes! and great analysis, Fil. BTW, back in the day, whenever three or more gathered in their name (so to speak), girl tweeners might very well burst into Stop! In the Name of Love, complete with arm movements...Ah, youth. Recently, I listened to the Byrds' Turn, Turn, Turn and realized I now know what "a time to refrain from embracing" means...as do we all...
Phil, you're breakdowns of vocals are so insightful and they reveal things most people, even such as myself don't know. I'm a huge Motown fan, and The Supremes are my favorites. Diana could really work the room with those eyes, she had the most casual, easy stage presence I've ever seen . I'm a huge fan of Philly Soul too. Love your work.
This song comes on and it's instant talent show day right then, right there, when we were kids. Excellent karaoke song too. I enjoyed the behind the scenes stories about them alot. That was a great video for a Fil analysis. 👍 Fil.
Cracking song. The resonance in the chorus; the slight elongation of, and pause between, the words in the chorus adds to the impact of the singing coming back at you. Sweet and powerful melody as well.
Enjoyed the analysis that helps point out the technical details of their singing to us non-musicians explaining some aspects that made them sound so exceptional. Diana Ross - what a voice, power, clarity, very distinctive, and obviously enormously effective. As for their appearance and bearing - is it fabulous, beautiful or both ? Its impossible to deny that on stage they were absolutely magnificent !
Fil, when I was in my first band in the seventies we taped the mic cables to the mic stands so there was less of a hazard of tripping on cables during a gig!

Hey Fil, another great oldie from the Supremes. I grew up in Ft.Lauderdale, Florida and was in high school when this came out. We used to go the beach every night and when the girls drove by all of the guys would yell "Stop in the Name of Love" ! Thanks for the memories .
I loved this so much! Thanks Fil. Please take a couple of days off for yourself. I've been concerned for you the past few months. Sustaining this 7 days a week gig is admirable, however you also need a life away from us. As much as we love you, YOU come first! (This, from the Queen of Self-Care after several bouts of burnout).
This is one of their earliest appearances... they would become much more exciting and dynamic later on. "The Happening" on Ed sullivan show is their best. At least on this appearance the sounds balance was properly done, and you can hear Mary loud and clear.
as usual a great education. ain't no mountain was a Motown release. and some of the minor info is a little off though the overall presentation is spot on. how you amas so much info on such a diverse talent pool is amazing. your respect and appreciation for all different genres involuntarily shine in your face in your delivery. .
Loved them. Had this single with "Baby Love" on the B-side. It was also a big hit. "Love Child" is my fav song of The Supremes. They inspired "Dreamgirls " a huge Broadway hit. Diana sounded more "white" than the other two. So they had her sing lead. Still an icon though. Used to sing with my best friend, using our hairbrushed as microphones & we'd take turns being lead & back up using their hand gestures. Fun days!

Another great review Fil. Again, being from Detroit, we not only had great rock artists beginnings but Motown was huge too, of course! I still flip in a Motown cd when want to get going on a sunny day! Supremes, Aretha, Marvin Gaye(personal favorite) always put me in a great mood and take me back to some great times! So much talent, no auto tune!
As a young kid and a massive Beatles fan my friends couldn't believe me next fave group were the Supremes. "What? You like girl singers?" Well, we were only 9 years old.

I was a teen when these ladies were so popular - I loved them. I remember watching them on Ed Sullivan; living in a rural area where African Americans were not at all appreciated... I recall their appearance was quite controversial by many I knew - including, sadly, my parents. Such a difficult time in our country.
Miss Ross! I caught her about three years ago or so at the Hollywood bowl as I have never seen her perform and sometimes you just have to do it. Unfortunately the person I took was of an age where he didn’t know who she was, shocking as that may seem. I tried to explain to him that she was the Beyoncé of her time and that in fact Beyoncé pretty much played her in “dreamgirls.” He didn’t seem terribly impressed until Usher showed up on the stage got on his knees and begin to give the worshipful, “we are not worthy“ gesture with his arms extending up and then down to the ground as she stood over him giggling. Then suddenly he got very alert and realized that she was an important person! LOL

If you look at the top song's of 1965 ... All kinds of classics came out... Look at top song's today... You might get one or two classics but the musicians in the 60's. Were incredible... Wow, Diana had the star presence. But what first caught my ears was the harmony singing by Flo and Mary. "Come See About Me" was the first 45 I ever bought, at the tender age of 12.

Obviously DR didn't need range. Nor did Motown want range for The Supremes. DR's voice reimagined "range". Who needs range when you sound heaven sent, ethereal, and dreamy no matter how sad the song? Range... is for Churches and Operas. The Supremes were SUPERSTARS! They were America's Sweethearts.

The group name was not changed to Diana Ross and The Supremes until late 1967, which is when Florence Ballard was fired sadly.

Phil, you're breakdowns of vocals are so insightful and they reveal things most people, even such as myself don't know. I'm a huge Motown fan, and The Supremes are my favorites. Diana could really work the room with those eyes, she had the most casual, easy stage presence I've ever seen . I'm a huge fan of Philly Soul too. Love your work.
This song comes on and it's instant talent show day right then, right there, when we were kids. Excellent karaoke song too. I enjoyed the behind the scenes stories about them alot. That was a great video for a Fil analysis. 👍 Fil.

Cracking song. The resonance in the chorus; the slight elongation of, and pause between, the words in the chorus adds to the impact of the singing coming back at you. Sweet and powerful melody as well.
Enjoyed the analysis that helps point out the technical details of their singing to us non-musicians explaining some aspects that made them sound so exceptional. Diana Ross - what a voice, power, clarity, very distinctive, and obviously enormously effective. As for their appearance and bearing - is it fabulous, beautiful or both ? Its impossible to deny that on stage they were absolutely magnificent !
Fil, when I was in my first band in the seventies we taped the mic cables to the mic stands so there was less of a hazard of tripping on cables during a gig!

Hey Fil, another great oldie from the Supremes. I grew up in Ft.Lauderdale, Florida and was in high school when this came out. We used to go the beach every night and when the girls drove by all of the guys would yell "Stop in the Name of Love" ! Thanks for the memories .

This is one of their earliest appearances... they would become much more exciting and dynamic later on. "The Happening" on Ed sullivan show is their best. At least on this appearance the sounds balance was properly done, and you can hear Mary loud and clear.
as usual a great education. ain't no mountain was a Motown release. and some of the minor info is a little off though the overall presentation is spot on. how you amas so much info on such a diverse talent pool is amazing. your respect and appreciation for all different genres involuntarily shine in your face in your delivery.

Loved them. Had this single with "Baby Love" on the B-side. It was also a big hit. "Love Child" is my fav song of The Supremes. They inspired "Dreamgirls " a huge Broadway hit. Diana sounded more "white" than the other two. So they had her sing lead. Still an icon though. Used to sing with my best friend, using our hairbrushed as microphones & we'd take turns being lead & back up using their hand gestures. Fun days!

Another great review Fil. Again, being from Detroit, we not only had great rock artists beginnings but Motown was huge too, of course! I still flip in a Motown cd when want to get going on a sunny day! Supremes, Aretha, Marvin Gaye(personal favorite) always put me in a great mood and take me back to some great times! So much talent, no auto tune!

As a young kid and a massive Beatles fan my friends couldn't believe me next fave group were the Supremes. "What? You like girl singers?" Well, we were only 9 years old.

I was a teen when these ladies were so popular - I loved them. I remember watching them on Ed Sullivan; living in a rural area where African Americans were not at all appreciated... I recall their appearance was quite controversial by many I knew - including, sadly, my parents. Such a difficult time in our country.

Miss Ross! I caught her about three years ago or so at the Hollywood bowl as I have never seen her perform and sometimes you just have to do it. Unfortunately the person I took was of an age where he didn’t know who she was, shocking as that may seem. I tried to explain to him that she was the Beyoncé of her time and that in fact Beyoncé pretty much played her in “dreamgirls.” He didn’t seem terribly impressed until Usher showed up on the stage got on his knees and begin to give the worshipful, “we are not worthy“ gesture with his arms extending up and then down to the ground as she stood over him giggling. Then suddenly he got very alert and realized that she was an important person! LOL

Wow, Diana had the star presence. But what first caught my ears was the harmony singing by Flo and Mary. "Come See About Me" was the first 45 I ever bought, at the tender age of 12.
Diana Ross never had a big range ala Aretha, but she made the most of the range she had. Thanks for this video, Fil.
But, Diana's delivery, breathiness, phrasing, sexiness, and personality in her vocals. Those things set her apart.

Obviously DR didn't need range. Nor did Motown want range for The Supremes. DR's voice reimagined "range". Who needs range when you sound heaven sent, ethereal, and dreamy no matter how sad the song? Range... is for Churches and Operas. The Supremes were SUPERSTARS! They were America's Sweethearts.
