    Gordy wanted Diana Ross to be featured more prominently in this production but it was Dusty's friendship with and admiration for Martha that led to the Motown themed show to begin with. That's why you see the Dusty/Martha and The Vandellas duet and not one between Dusty and Diana.

    • @anthonykearney7320
      @anthonykearney7320 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It's clear that in other shows that I've seen that Dusty felt a better affinity singing with Martha and she wasn't parting from that.She helped put Motown on the map by promoting them on her shows so she pulled the strings!

      @alicemilne1444 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I attended the recording of this show. I was 17 at the time, and not really into Motown - I was a follower of the Stones, and the grittier type of R&B, but a friend of mine was a fan of soul, and he got a couple of tickets. I remember being particularly fascinated by Dusty, and the way in which she was very much in charge of the production. I was also intrigued by the TV studio setup. I have come to realise over the years just how lucky I was to be present at this one-off event.

RSG was superior compared to what was on Tele in the States. There needs to be more episodes uploaded. Just havin' fun jammin' along on my new Les Paul, well, new to me anyway. There is nothin' like R&B, Blues & RnR!!! Thank you, Merci, Danke, Gracias.

    I was in the military in Germany in 1965, but managed to secure a pass to get to the UK to check a couple of the Motown Review concerts out. Apparently, the shows hadn't been selling out until Dusty Springfield got involved. It was the first time I had seen a revolving stage. Unlike today when they have to waste time between acts, there were three acts on a split stage, and when one finished, the stage rotated, and the other act would get going.

    This production was so entirely great I think it should be added to our National Archives for the Arts (is there such a thing?). It should be resored in its' entirety and available for all to see. It was a time of change and all these people were young and vital and at their best. Most of them have since passed. I still can't believe Mary Wilson is no longer with us. I think I will save it and watch it every so often and tell my friends and family about it. Just fantastic.

      Yes, ur so right, there is only a handful of Motown greats left. Interestingly enuff, Berry being thee oldest & owner & here he is still living, while all these wonderful talents who were younger than him have passed on, many long ago & the saddest thing is that the overwhelming majority died BROKE & left nothing for their families, smh. Karma seems to have overlooked him & Ross for all the hurt & pain they inflicted on so many undeserving people, smh.

      Wickham was an assistant producer of the 1960s British television show Ready Steady Go!, and was fashion consultant for the short-lived The Mod's Monthly magazine, first issued in March 1964 by Albert Hand Publications, and edited by Mark Burns.[2][3] However she is probably best known as the manager of well-known pop/soul acts Dusty Springfield and Labelle.

    Dusty was a great singer and so likable. I'm glad she had these American women on the show who were so big in America. While the Brits sent us great bands, America clearly has the most great women singers, many of them black women who came out of gospel churches...men too. So many Motown hit songs where churned out. It makes me proud of our music industry from the early days. Then also, the British rock bands grokked onto our blues singers even before many Americans did, and then rock people like Jimi Hendrix who brought to England by the Animals' Chas Chandler before he had his breakout in America in 1967. Great video! Thanks.

      This is NOT a Dusty Springfield show, It's a special edition of the weekly UK pop TV show Ready Steady Go! broadcast on Friday early evenings between 1963-1966. This special was taped AFTER the Motown Tour of the UK had ended. It was badly timed- had Gordy arranged for the show to be taped and broadcast BEFORE the tour started then it would've been terrific promotion. As it turned out the tour played to half full houses at most venues as the Motown artists were still relatively unknown in the UK apart from the Supremes.

    I'm ready Jon Savages book "1966" right now, reading about when Motown/Tamla invaded London. And here it is on TH-cam, preserved and displayed for all of us to witness. Thank you for sharing this treasure; you've made this old man's day. Peace and love I bring to you, as you have to us...

    • @ronwhycherly
      @ronwhycherly 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It invaded before 1966. At least amongst the mods. Though originally Motown records were distributed under another label. The first Supremes number one which had Tamla Motown on the label was Stop In The Name Of Love. The Earl Van Dyke backing group were amazed to find that young, white British mods knew who they were as did British bands as in the USA they were unknown, only the stars were known.

    Enjoyed every second of the show even though the film left out some of Dusty's intro's, close-up's... I luvv her wit in introducing the Supremes... they may charted even in Outer Mongolia! I especially love her I Can't Hear You No More backed by the Motown musicians and Martha and the Vandellas. It's perfect! I am now a fan of the M and the Vs. Darren, thank you for posting!!! P.S. Awesome to know here that Mr Ken Barret was there in the taping of the show as a 17 year-old. And, and, Dusty really was a master in covering the Motown songs. She did Shake really quite well in the NME concert.

    Maybe in America, The Supremes were considered “hot stuff”, but , over in England, Martha and The Vandellas were held in much higher regard…due to their stronger, more “soulful” records. This explains why Dusty featured Martha, Betty, and Roz much more during this special, including them in her set..as well as their own.

    • @zeden2924
      @zeden2924 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @willcat - The fact that Dusty was gay and fancied Martha had a lot to do with it.
      Dusty did her best to persuade execs that a Motown show without Martha and the Vandellas wouldn’t fly, and Dusty won.

    Apparantly, Florence and Mary were then stil allowed to stand next to the Prima Donna. But that's een minor detail. Never heard them sing Shake, and they do it really in a awesome way. Martha Reeves! The Temptations!! Dusty doing a great job. The magnificent Smokey. The awasome David Ruffin. The whole atmospere, almost too much. I believe in mankind again after seeing this! Thanks a lot for posting, and good luck and best wishes to all soul lovers of this world! Have fun, enjoy it to the dephts of your heart, this kinda music will never, never die.

    Darren, I'm just now seeing this. How awesome you posted it. Didn't think it was available at all. Diana Ross = STAR QUALITY. You have got to give it to her. She had her own vocal style as well. But she looks exhausted under the eyes. Probably was exhausted. People have no idea how grueling the road is. Admire that Dusty was loyal to her good friend Martha and decided to do the duet with Martha and the Vandellas. Martha had an incredible voice, Nowhere to run. You can just feel the energy of that audience, chaos, so great.
