In the spring of 2004 the rock band I played bass with, TIME MACHINE, held a benefit show for Mike after learning his funds had been used up with hospital bills regarding his broken neck. It was an all day outdoor event hosted by one of our favorite clubs, The Upper Deck. Turn-out was good and guest musicians were welcomed to the stage. Naturally DC5 covers were featured. At one point in the early afternoon, Stephanie the club owner came running out of the bar with a phone held over her head shouting; "HE'S ON THE PHONE...HE'S ON THE PHONE!!" We stopped playing 'Because' and she held the phone up to a mic. It was MIKE SMITH! Thanking us for helping him out! What a thrill! Naturally the donations poured in, eventually reaching almost $4,000! Turns out a local D/J had tipped Mike's agent off to what we were doing prompting the call. And still I say, "We are all in this together." Thumper.
All of the boys in the band were very polite and friendly. I'm not surprised Mike gave you a call. I wish he was still with us along with Denis and Rick. I was lucky to meet all of them in the summer of '68 while on vacation in London.
Was Peter Noone involved? He also spearheaded an effort to raise money for Mike’s wheelchair. Kind of ticked me off Dave Clark didn’t just buy the guy a wheelchair, considering that the DC5 probably wouldn’t have gone anywhere without him.
First time I ever saw Roy without a guitar. His guitar playing is still one of the best and stands the test of time IMO. He was a true master of the guitar

He flew to London from the US for a gig, everything was fine except he forgot to pack his guitar. It had to be a Les Paul, it seems, so calls were made all over London, and only one Les Paul could be found. Whoever was delegated begged and pleaded, but the owner would not lend his Les Paul, do you blame him? Maybe the guy offered money, offered his body, I don't know. Not having my Les Paul. In the end the owner said "By the way, who's it for?" Answer:"Roy Orbison." The owner said "Where do you want it delivered?" That's the story. I guess I'd have lent a Les Paul to Roy Orbison if he asked.
I simply loved the Dave Clark Five and Paul Revere and the Raiders. It is so much fun to see them the way I remember them waaayyy back then. It was a great time to be a teenager. I'm 76 soon and still love their music, looks and energy.

I was lucky enough to see them live in England in ‘64. Fantastic show! My beloved father was stationed there in the Air Force from ‘60-‘64. What a great time to be in the UK!

In the 2 years that we were there we did a lot of weekend and day trips to London,Shakespeare's home (can't remember the town) Dunstable Downs.Even though I was real young I still remember a little. I'll never forget the time I saw them perform this on TV when I was 9, and the stomping on the stage was what really made people stand up and look at these guys with this hit! They were rather aggressive lads who knew how to tear the house down! I loved the stunt with the chandelier shaking and then coming down on the floor because of the vibrations!! It fits perfectly with Bits and Pieces!!!!!
Check out 1:46 and 12:44 DC5 fans, because it's just about the only live performance audio you can hear from this band on TH-cam. Only Dave Clark knows why he's gone to such great lengths to replace all their live sound with their studio recordings. Probably for the same reason he never gave fans a concert album or an '80s reunion tour. Lead singer Mike Smith deserved so much better.
The bit at 12:44 isn’t live - the instruments aren’t plugged in, and there are no vocal mikes for the rest ages f the band. I totally agree that Mike Smith had a brilliant voice, and should get much more recognition for what he did.
I well remember watching Shindig and Hullabaloo when I was 12...and my 'cool' Mom took me and some of my friends to our first rock concert in Dec. '64...the Dave Clark Five! A few months later she took us to see Herman's Hermits and Freddie and The Dreamers for my 13th birthday!

I remember my older brother bringing home the first Dave Clarke Five single...he liked them. We three brothers were hard core rock and roll lovers....although my oldest brother was a Righteous Brothers kinda guy. Those days seem silly to todays kids...but hey....this was brand new music in the early 1960's..we were at the door to a decade of the best written and best played rock and roll in all of history. BTW, my step-dad worked in a record shop in Philly back then. He used to bring demo albums home for me... He couldn't get me any Beatles demos, but the first demos from the Brit invasion just happened to be the album "Glad All Over" & DC5 Return... DC5 were actually my 2nd favorite band from the UK.
Our country group, i am honored to say worked with Roy Clark and to see him on Shindig with the Dave Clark Five was to say the least, a wonderful surprise.
Roy had more talent than all the others on this show put together. He was phenomenal on guitar and other instruments, could sing, and had great charisma on stage. And he seemed to be a genuinely nice guy. Put a guitar in that boy's hands!!
This sure brings back memories for me when i was a teenage girl in the mid sixties. I remember watching Shindig all the time loved the show thanks for sharing the video.
I loved the group. Mike, Dave, Dennis, were my favorites. I met Dennis way back and he was just awesome. So adorable and cute. Wish it could have been longer.

For a couple of years, say from 1964 to 1966, The DC 5 gave the Fab 4 a run for their $$$ as far as Popular music goes. But Mike Smith was the main reason for their success. In my opinion, he had a voice that was a combination of Lennon and McCartney. Other than their hits, their song writing, especially after 1968, just couldn't rival the Beatles, Stones, Who, etc etc. Mike Smith would've had much much more longevity in the music world had he had the proper material & management. Actually, Dave Clark didn't really help Mike in the long run. Mike was an absolute fantastic Pop singer.
They were popular, but they had few songs. Despite what it says on their record labels, Dave Clark did not write any of their songs. He ripped of the guy who did.

I collected all of the Dave Clark 5 albums starting in 1964. They were great. Part of the British invasion but I liked them better than the Beatles at the time.

The first album I ever bought was "Glad All Over" as a nine-year-old in 1964! I bought every one after that. Albums "Try Too Hard" and "Weekend in London" are forgotten gems.
The house staff on that program was unbelievable,Darleen Love,Bobby Freeman,The Wrecking Crew band and at the time campus favorite duo,Rightous Brothers.
I saw the DC 5 at the old Boston Garden in 1965. Woo Woo Ginsburg, the DJ from WMEX, was the host. They were going to stop the show because of the screaming and rushing the stage. It was great being a teenager in the 60s. Such a great variety of music. I loved Shindig and Hullabaloo. I found both on ebay.
It must've been hot as hell in there too if it was during the summer. I know even in the 80s the Garden still didn't have air conditioning for the NBA finals.
They never played live on US television. It sounds here like Smith's vocals were different in some places from the records. Possible lead vocals against a backing track. I don't know anyone who ever saw them live.
It's hard to believe that the DC5 even played one note on their records. I bet session musicians played on most of their stuff. The DC5 lineup seemed mostly for lip sync TV appearances and for backing vocals in the studio for Mike Smith.
The only thing live on that Dave Clark performance was the chandelier. Dave was a control freak and never wanted them to play live. Probably because they couldn’t.

A pity we now have the technology of such high quality but mostly low quality talent will be preserved for eternity. And what we have from a really golden age is so vulnerable. Tele itself was pretty crap visually back then. Don't mind the B&W but it was so unclear especially the usa NTSC system which until cable and HD was still poorer than the Pal technology.

I have never seen..that the DC5..played and sung live ? Why ? All Videos that i have seen...playback Instruments and playback sung. I know a little bit about it ... because I've been playing in a band since the 60's. Today I play with my oldie band in Germany..also songs by DC5..Glad all over or Red Balloon..but we play and sing live.
The song playing during the closing credits ("Bread and Butter Man") absolutely ROCKS---sounds like a gospel tune at a Pentecostal service!! AWESOME!! (And as great as Roy Clark's vocals are on this I'd have given anything to have heard Mike Smith WAIL on the entire song!!)
At least 3 1960s groups had members named Mike Smith, with Amen Corner and Paul Revere and the Raiders being the others I know of. But the DC5's was probably the best known and the best.
Billy also toured with the Beatles in 1962 when he was a backing Keyboard player for Little Richard who came out of retirement after he left music for the ministry.His first concert was touring The UK and Hamburg with the Beatles on the bill.
Soon after Leon Russell became the house piano player. One episode features their "side men" which also included Glen Campbell doing great covers of elvis and Carl Perkins. In the 1960's, it was not uncommon for groups to have certain members that would appear on album covers, and certainly these members would perform with the group if you saw them live, but these members would frequently(or always) be replaced by better musicians in the studio. This was true of "The Dave Clark Five","Paul Revere & The Raiders", "Freddie & The Dreamers", "Herman's Hermits" & "Gary Lewis & The Playboys". Their audiences were 10 to 12 years old, didn't know and probably wouldn't have cared. It is quite possible that on certain DC5 records, that Mike Smith may be entirely backed by session musicians. Certainly, on many DC5 records, the group's distinctive vocal harmony sound is Mike Smith harmonizing with himself; something that the group couldn't reproduce live. Guys like Dave Clark & Paul Revere were music businessmen first, musicians second. They could play enough to get by on stage in front of a screaming audience that couldn't hear much.
Dave Clark has retained ownership and control of all the music. He has limited access to the music to maximize the earning potential. A number of years ago I was able to buy a CD that was a copy of a Russian DC5 greatest hits album. It was the only option I could find to get their music.
You are so right. It may be impossible to even find a recording of Dave Clark 5 live. Even in their Ed Sullivan performances, they used backup tapes. As you stated, the teeny boppers didn't care.
I only remember Shindig when Bobby Sherman was hosting it. Even though I was 10 years old in 1965. I watch it for two things, the musicians and the dancing girls. Because of their shapes. It started my awakening about women. That's really why I watched American Bandstand. Curiosity
Dave Clark was a shrewd businessman, then and now. He retained all rights to DC5 music, not the record co. He was also the business mgr for the group and negotiated all recordings and live appearances. He dealt directly with Ed Sullivan himself which Ed enjoyed.

he messed up though.. refused to reissue the DC5 American albums on to CDs.. which guaranteed that the band would not be on radio to often...the music suffered because it wasn't heard..

Speaking of Mick Avory, from what I've read in Kinks biographies over the years; a session drummer was used on "You Really Got Me" with Mick on tambourine. The only reason Mick didn't play drums on that was due to a mix up by their record company who had hired a sessions drummer for the recording. Mick Avory was one of the hardest working drummers, "Always Practicing" according to Ray in "X-Ray". Listen to "Shangri-La"! That's some good drumming!
Roy Clark with the DC5......a few years before Roy was playing a room in Safford, Arizona. Dave Clark had the most luxurious penthouse in Swinging London. He had more show business savvy than talent, and he made the most of it.
Thanks for posting. I think the show's intro medley and the "Bread and Butter Man" credit roll finale actually present the DC5 performing live, unlike the lip syncs we're accustomed to viewing.
This was a reference to an episode of "The Flintstones" during the 1965-66 season called "Shinrock A Go-Go". In it, the Beau Brummeels' ":Laugh, Laugh" was used ("credited" as The Beau Rubblestones). The program was shown on the Abadaba Broadcasting Company, one of three TV stations in bedrock (the other two stations were the Cro-magnon Broadcasting System and the Neanderthal Broadcasting Company).
I have read stories where the DC5 took local acts as openers and they blew DC5 off the stage. Dave did not play on the singles. All DC5 sessions were closed so you can figure it out. Great music though so I don't care.
Also if you see Having a wild weekend it's a disapointment to see how Dave had the script to feature him and make the band the three stooges. Not cool. When Mike Smith was crippled Peter Noone was asking for donations at concerts to a handicap special needs van for Mike. I think Dave had enough money to help his mate out. Fuck you Dave Clark. He didn't write Because and was supposed to pay the writer. Threat of a public lawsuit? Suddenly Dave pays off. Fuck off Clark.
So Dave Clark goes in to negotiate the DC5 recording contract with Capitol Records and tells the boys "I'm going to ask for 3 times what we're worth as our starting point!" He gives his proposal to the execs and they almost immediately agree without any dickering leaving Clark to realize he probably could've gotten 10 times what he thought they were worth! Still, the important thing is Dave Clark knew enough to retain ownership rights to all their music.
The DC5 wasn't on Capitol Records. And Dave Clark wasn't that stupid. He retained all rights to the music publishing and the songs. Capitol Records did screw the Beatles over by paying them royalties because they signed up without reading the contract. They lost all rights to their songs to Epstein and George Martin and the record company.

On every TV and radio show where The Beatles and The Stones played absolutely live The DC5 showed up and mimed to their records. Explains why we never got a concert album or a reunion tour, because it would have exposed Dave Clark as a musical fraud.

BULLCRAP! The DC5 were live on the Sullivan Show until Dave shattered his right hand so Ed allowed them to use a backup tape. Dave never played drums again. And it's true that the reverb on their songs was dubbed. Ed changed his policies in 65 and most of the self contained groups started using backing tracks. We have special microphones today to get that sound live. The Beatles used backing tracks in their last Sullivan appearance.
Not true. In fact, other than Mike Smith and Dave Clark, the other three were sometimes session musicians. They could play their instruments. The only real problem with the group was that they only played cover versions of other peoples songs. This limited them.
I once saw a video of the DC5 on TH-cam. It had to be one of the earliest TV performances and it WAS live. It also sounded like total crap. The thing was, it wasn't the band's fault. Whatever engineer placed the mics, he messed it all up with too many mics on Dave's drums. One mic was right in front of the bass drum and the drums overshadowed the rest of the instruments. Next, Dave started to have the group record a backing track at a local studio and they would play the track and sing along with it. But on one episode, the tape broke and they had to stand there waiting for someone to fix it. Finally either they simply mimed the recording or sometimes mimed it with live mics on Mike, Lenny, and sometimes Dave. So for those who (for whatever reason STILL think they couldn't play), why did they win an award in London for being the best live band (around 1962 or 1963) ???? We all know how great Mike was on keyboard, being sent to a musical college at the age of 13. Lenny was a jazz guitarist (jazz is a lot tougher than R&R) and taught music in college after the band broke up. Denis Payton could play 5 instruments. And while Dave admits he KNOWS he'll never be a great drummer, he did form the band, led it, played drums, sang backing and sometimes lead vocals, produced the records, and managed the group. That's not too shabby at all.

Mike Smith was one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. The DC5 were so lucky to have him in the band.
And Dave Clark capitalized on that immensely! Smith left an estate worth £66,000.

I was lucky enough to see them live in England in ‘64. Fantastic show! My beloved father was stationed there in the Air Force from ‘60-‘64. What a great time to be in the UK!

In the 2 years that we were there we did a lot of weekend and day trips to London,Shakespeare's home (can't remember the town) Dunstable Downs.Even though I was real young I still remember a little. I'll never forget the time I saw them perform this on TV when I was 9, and the stomping on the stage was what really made people stand up and look at these guys with this hit! They were rather aggressive lads who knew how to tear the house down! I loved the stunt with the chandelier shaking and then coming down on the floor because of the vibrations!! It fits perfectly with Bits and Pieces!!!!!

Check out 1:46 and 12:44 DC5 fans, because it's just about the only live performance audio you can hear from this band on TH-cam. Only Dave Clark knows why he's gone to such great lengths to replace all their live sound with their studio recordings. Probably for the same reason he never gave fans a concert album or an '80s reunion tour. Lead singer Mike Smith deserved so much better.
The bit at 12:44 isn’t live - the instruments aren’t plugged in, and there are no vocal mikes for the rest ages f the band. I totally agree that Mike Smith had a brilliant voice, and should get much more recognition for what he did.

I well remember watching Shindig and Hullabaloo when I was 12...and my 'cool' Mom took me and some of my friends to our first rock concert in Dec. '64...the Dave Clark Five! A few months later she took us to see Herman's Hermits and Freddie and The Dreamers for my 13th birthday!
nature photography guy you had a very good Mom. My Mom also took me to see all the Beatles movies and also movies with Gerry and the Pacemakers, DC5, and Herman’s Hermits. I was too young to go to a concert (5 in ‘64) but I got all the albums. My Mom was as still is the best!!!

I remember my older brother bringing home the first Dave Clarke Five single...he liked them. We three brothers were hard core rock and roll lovers....although my oldest brother was a Righteous Brothers kinda guy. Those days seem silly to todays kids...but hey....this was brand new music in the early 1960's..we were at the door to a decade of the best written and best played rock and roll in all of history. Our early radios had tubes inside....had to wait for them to warm up to hear music,

BTW, my step-dad worked in a record shop in Philly back then. He used to bring demo albums home for me... He couldn't get me any Beatles demos, but the first demos from the Brit invasion just happened to be the album "Glad All Over" & DC5 Return... DC5 were actually my 2nd favorite band from the UK.

Roy had more talent than all the others on this show put together. He was phenomenal on guitar and other instruments, could sing, and had great charisma on stage. And he seemed to be a genuinely nice guy. Put a guitar in that boy's hands!!

Lennon and McCartney. Other than their hits, their song writing, especially after 1968, just couldn't rival the Beatles, Stones, Who, etc etc. Mike Smith would've had much much more longevity in the music world had he had the proper material & management. Actually, Dave Clark didn't really help

I collected all of the Dave Clark 5 albums starting in 1964. They were great. Part of the British invasion but I liked them better than the Beatles at the time.

The first album I ever bought was "Glad All Over" as a nine-year-old in 1964! I bought every one after that. Albums "Try Too Hard" and "Weekend in London" are forgotten gems.

My first rock concert - Dave Clark 5 in 1966.
I saw the DC 5 at the old Boston Garden in 1965. Woo Woo Ginsburg, the DJ from WMEX, was the host. They were going to stop the show because of the screaming and rushing the stage. It was great being a teenager in the 60s. Such a great variety of music. I loved Shindig and Hullabaloo. I found both on ebay.
It must've been hot as hell in there too if it was during the summer. I know even in the 80s the Garden still didn't have air conditioning for the NBA finals.
I went to that show! The Rascals and Lou Cristy were playing also.

I watched the Dave Clark 5 play and sing bits and pieces in Toronto at musslemans Lake in 1965. And the place was packed had a good time.
It is hard to believe the DC5 medley was live. It was the record. So many of them are dead. Very sad. We have lost so many great R&R greats.
They never played live on US television. It sounds here like Smith's vocals were different in some places from the records. Possible lead vocals against a backing track. I don't know anyone who ever saw them live.

It's hard to believe that the DC5 even played one note on their records. I bet session musicians played on most of their stuff. The DC5 lineup seemed mostly for lip sync TV appearances and for backing vocals in the studio for Mike Smith.
The only thing live on that Dave Clark performance was the chandelier. Dave was a control freak and never wanted them to play live. Probably because they couldn’t.

I remember when my Mom worked in a department store and she knew I like the Beatles this was back in 1964. I was 8 years old at the time she bought me the single that the DC5 performed here on this video. That was “Can’t You See That She’s Mine” they need to bring them back along with the Beatles, Stones, and Del Shannon. 1964 was a hit for “Can’t You See That She’s Mine” I’m 68 years old and…Who’s still listening??? I only listen 🎧 to great 👍 music because it…ROCKS!!! I had the single in 1964!!!
Super video. Thank you. Loved the DC5. I had totally forgotten about Shindig. Dave Clark 5 seem timeless for me but that show is definitely dated. A pity we now have the technology of such high quality but mostly low quality talent will be preserved for eternity. And what we have from a really golden age is so vulnerable. Tele itself was pretty crap visually back then. Don't mind the B&W but it was so unclear especially the usa NTSC system which until cable and HD was still poorer than the Pal technology.

I have never seen..that the DC5..played and sung live ? Why ? All Videos that i have seen...playback Instruments and playback sung. I know a little bit about it ... because I've been playing in a band since the 60's. Today I play with my oldie band in Germany..also songs by DC5..Glad all over or Red Balloon..but we play and sing live.
The song playing during the closing credits ("Bread and Butter Man") absolutely ROCKS---sounds like a gospel tune at a Pentecostal service!! AWESOME!! (And as great as Roy Clark's vocals are on this I'd have given anything to have heard Mike Smith WAIL on the entire song!!)
At least 3 1960s groups had members named Mike Smith, with Amen Corner and Paul Revere and the Raiders being the others I know of. But the DC5's was probably the best known and the best.

I didn't realize the great Billy Preston was a regular on this show.
Billy also toured with the Beatles in 1962 when he was a backing Keyboard player for Little Richard who came out of retirement after he left music for the ministry.His first concert was touring The UK and Hamburg with the Beatles on the bill.
Soon after Leon Russell became the house piano player. One episode features their "side men" which also included Glen Campbell doing great covers of elvis and Carl Perkins. In the 1960's, it was not uncommon for groups to have certain members that would appear on album covers, and certainly these members would perform with the group if you saw them live, but these members would frequently(or always) be replaced by better musicians in the studio. This was true of "The Dave Clark Five","Paul Revere & The Raiders", "Freddie & The Dreamers", "Herman's Hermits" & "Gary Lewis & The Playboys". Their audiences were 10 to 12 years old, didn't know and probably wouldn't have cared. It is quite possible that on certain DC5 records, that Mike Smith may be entirely backed by session musicians. Certainly, on many DC5 records, the group's distinctive vocal harmony sound is Mike Smith harmonizing with himself; something that the group couldn't reproduce live. Guys like Dave Clark & Paul Revere were music businessmen first, musicians second. They could play enough to get by on stage in front of a screaming audience that couldn't hear much.
Dave Clark has retained ownership and control of all the music. He has limited access to the music to maximize the earning potential. A number of years ago I was able to buy a CD that was a copy of a Russian DC5 greatest hits album. It was the only option I could find to get their music.

You are so right. It may be impossible to even find a recording of Dave Clark 5 live. Even in their Ed Sullivan performances, they used backup tapes. As you stated, the teeny boppers didn't care.

I only remember Shindig when Bobby Sherman was hosting it. Even though I was 10 years old in 1965. I watch it for two things, the musicians and the dancing girls. Because of their shapes. It started my awakening about women. That's really why I watched American Bandstand. Curiosity

Dave Clark was a shrewd businessman, then and now. He retained all rights to DC5 music, not the record co. He was also the business mgr for the group and negotiated all recordings and live appearances. He dealt directly with Ed Sullivan himself which Ed enjoyed.

he messed up though.. refused to reissue the DC5 American albums on to CDs.. which guaranteed that the band would not be on radio to often...the music suffered because it wasn't heard..

Speaking of Mick Avory, from what I've read in Kinks biographies over the years; a session drummer was used on "You Really Got Me" with Mick on tambourine. The only reason Mick didn't play drums on that was due to a mix up by their record company who had hired a sessions drummer for the recording. Mick Avory was one of the hardest working drummers, "Always Practicing" according to Ray in "X-Ray". Listen to "Shangri-La"! That's some good drumming!

Roy Clark with the DC5......a few years before Roy was playing a room in Safford, Arizona. Dave Clark had the most luxurious penthouse in Swinging London. He had more show business savvy than talent, and he made the most of it.

This was a reference to an episode of "The Flintstones" during the 1965-66 season called "Shinrock A Go-Go". In it, the Beau Brummeels' ":Laugh, Laugh" was used ("credited" as The Beau Rubblestones). The program was shown on the Abadaba Broadcasting Company, one of three TV stations in bedrock (the other two stations were the Cro-magnon Broadcasting System and the Neanderthal Broadcasting Company).

I have read stories where the DC5 took local acts as openers and they blew DC5 off the stage. Dave did not play on the singles. All DC5 sessions were closed so you can figure it out. Great music though so I don't care.
Also if you see Having a wild weekend it's a disapointment to see how Dave had the script to feature him and make the band the three stooges. Not cool. When Mike Smith was crippled Peter Noone was asking for donations at concerts to a handicap special needs van for Mike. I think Dave had enough money to help his mate out. Fuck you Dave Clark. I was lucky enough to see Mike Smith live twice.
So Dave Clark goes in to negotiate the DC5 recording contract with Capitol Records and tells the boys "I'm going to ask for 3 times what we're worth as our starting point!" He gives his proposal to the execs and they almost immediately agree without any dickering leaving Clark to realize he probably could've gotten 10 times what he thought they were worth! Still, the important thing is Dave Clark knew enough to retain ownership rights to all their music.
The DC5 wasn't on Capitol Records. And Dave Clark wasn't that stupid. He retained all rights to the music publishing and the songs. Capitol Records did screw the Beatles over by paying them royalties because they signed up without reading the contract. They lost all rights to their songs to Epstein and George Martin and the record company.

Fans of The DC5 have to ask themselves why Dave Clark went to such great lengths to prevent us from hearing his band play live. On every TV and radio show where The Beatles and The Stones played absolutely live The DC5 showed up and mimed to their records. Explains why we never got a concert album or a reunion tour, because it would have exposed Dave Clark as a musical fraud.

A know that Mike Smith was a brillant piano player, a great organ keyboardist and also he had a badass voice!
BULLCRAP! The DC5 were live on the Sullivan Show until Dave shattered his right hand so Ed allowed them to use a backup tape. Dave never played drums again. And it's true that the reverb on their songs was dubbed. Ed changed his policies in 65 and most of the self contained groups started using backing tracks. We have special microphones today to get that sound live. The Beatles used backing tracks in their last Sullivan appearance.
Not true. In fact, other than Mike Smith and Dave Clark, the other three were sometimes session musicians. They could play their instruments. The only real problem with the group was that they only played cover versions of other peoples songs. This limited them.
I once saw a video of the DC5 on TH-cam. It had to be one of the earliest TV performances and it WAS live. It also sounded like total crap. The thing was, it wasn't the band's fault. Whatever engineer placed the mics, he messed it all up with too many mics on Dave's drums. One mic was right in front of the bass drum and the drums overshadowed the rest of the instruments.
Next, Dave started to have the group record a backing track at a local studio and they would play the track and sing along with it. But on one episode, the tape broke and they had to stand there waiting for someone to fix it.
Finally either they simply mimed the recording or sometimes mimed it with live mics on Mike, Lenny, and sometimes Dave.
So for those who (for whatever reason STILL think they couldn't play), why did they win an award in London for being the best live band (around 1962 or 1963) ????
We all know how great Mike was on keyboard, being sent to a musical college at the age of 13. Lenny was a jazz guitarist (jazz is a lot tougher than R&R) and taught music in college after the band broke up. Denis Payton could play 5 instruments.
And while Dave admits he KNOWS he'll never be a great drummer, he did form the band, led it, played drums, sang backing and sometimes lead vocals, produced the records, and managed the group. That's not too shabby at all.
