996 vs 992: How Much Has The Porsche 911 Changed?

  • Another upgrade for my Porsche 911 40th Anniversary, I get the PCCM Plus installed. Whilst the work is being done, Porsche lend me a brand new manual 992 Carrera S and I thought it would be interesting to see how much the 911 has changed over 20 years!
    From Porsche:
Porsche announced the availability of a seven-speed manual transmission for the 2020 911 Carrera S and 4S Coupe and Cabriolet models. At no additional charge, customers can select this option as an alternative to the standard 8-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission. The seven-speed manual comes paired with a standard Sport Chrono Package. This package includes Dynamic Drivetrain Mounts, PSM Sport Mode, a rev-match function and the mode switch on the steering wheel which allows the driver to select between Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and the customizable Individual mode. As on the previous generation 911 Carrera S and 4S models, the manual transmission versions come with a standard mechanical limited-slip differential including Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), replacing the fully variable, electronically controlled limited slip differential that is standard on the models equipped with PDK.
The manual transmission option combines a particularly engaging driving experience with compelling performance. The 911 Carrera S with manual transmission can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in around 4 seconds and reach a top track speed of over 190 mph. Curb weight for the new 911 Carrera S Coupe with a manual transmission comes in at 3,298 lb. Detailed specifications will be available before the cars arrive in market.

This year you have significantly improved already great b-roll and editing. I am glad you still shoot your own footage instead of using prerecorded stuff from manufacturer’s PR department like some other automotive TH-camrs do. I also enjoy the variety of your ideas to explore the cars which you are filming, it’s not just spec sheet rundown. You truly deserve more views, because as a one man crew you’re doing a great job and keep things fresh every time 👍

I remember my purchase as if it was yesterday. MSRP on my car was $91,xxx.xx dollars. Dealer offered $10k off. Back in ‘04 that was a lot of scratch. The slight engine upgrade (X51) - only noticeable at higher RPMs, the cool unique polished wheels, the Turbo front facia, the GT3 side skirts, and the unique interior called my name. I was hooked. I enjoyed that car for three years. The longest I ever kept a car - at that point... I recall it was marginally better in every way over my previous ‘99 996. Enjoying your vids as it brings back great memories. Cheers/B

I have a 1998 996.1 C2. My sixth year starts about now. Ive done about 5000-8000 km a year of which about 70% is quality kilometers on B-roads.
Ive done many things with my car. Had the engine off my first winter, did the usual IMSB, thermostat, water pump etc. I have the Bilstein B16 kit, Powerbush polyurethane bushes, Eibach rear AR-bar, three sets of tyres, one set on RS-sized OZ Alleggeritas. I honestly dont think that I feel happier anywhere as driving my 996. I feel free, in control, concentrated, even enjoying sceneries. I feel gratitude beyond words.

Irony is that early cars were all pretty much the same size, until the 996, which felt enormous when it debuted. Incidentally, the build quality also went off a cliff in 1999.
When I bought a 996 in 2002 to go with my 964’s, it also felt so much slower on the backroads and so much disconnected from the driving experience. I really feel a well sorted 964/993 cannot be beat for sheer driving pleasure on a back road. That said, my next edition is likely a 992 for daily liveability, and thank god the build-quality is not the plastic, fall-apart, budget experience of the 996...
Great video, as always, thanks Sam!

Would you do a video (or series?) on great UK driving roads or areas? Beautiful dark blue on the 992! Love seeing Porsche being one of the last to not reserve the manual gearbox for highly limited special runs. Fascinating comparison! I'm always impressed by how characteristics are being carried through generations, even dozens of years apart 🚙💨

Loving the 996 content, that x51 pack really is a good piece to have on one. Cool it came standard on the 40th
