Abandoned Excavator!! Will it start and drive from its grave?? Awesome vintage diesel engine tractor

  • 1971 Insley Excavator abandoned after clearing land for a horse farm. Sitting for years, is it too far gone? Owner says it ran when parked in 2000, but does that mean this tractor will run TODAY??

    Great job figuring out the air starvation problem. The blower has a flapper inside that blocks off all air intake to the blower and engine. This is called the emergency shutdown flapper. It is used in the case of a runaway situation. It should be spring loaded to close once the cam is turned at the side where the cable attaches. This little 4-71 sounds great. You took a very large gamble starting this engine without checking to see if the rack was stuck. Had the rack been stuck, you would have had a runaway situation.

    • @badstackdiesel7596
      @badstackdiesel7596  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I did have a plastic cover from one of my totes ready to block off the intake just in case. But you’re totally right. Having done more research afterwards, I noticed that everyone checks the rack. Thanks for the advice once again!

    In case you don't know, Detroits of that era are 2 stroke diesels and the blower is required for them to run. They actually have holes halfway down the piston liners where the blower forces in air while simultaneously forcing out the exhaust. They run like this: down stroke= exhaust/intake, and up stroke is compression and fire. And rinse and repeat 😂. Just some info on old Detroits in case you didn't know

      The blower is necessary for the engine to run; it’s not a power adder like a turbo or a supercharger. The 2-stroke creates no vacuum, so the blower forces air into the cylinders. There are going to be a bunch of people that will say that because it has a blower, it’s not naturally aspirated but you can’t run a Detroit without it. Great Vid man. Keep that old iron alive, we’re gonna need it. This plastic computerized shit nowadays would never last 20 years sleeping in a field. Too cool

    I`m no diesel expert, but I gather from watching other videos that diesel engines have a fuel return hose that sends unspent fuel back into the fuel tank. So, while it appeared that this unit was `drinking up` all the fuel in your diesel can, it only looked that way because the unspent fuel was actually being sent back into the diesel fuel tank on the machine instead of back into your can.
    Nice video, though !

    You should check the oil again to see if it milky. The over full level indicates that water has possibly gotten into the engine. It would have been better to crack the oil drain plug first to see if there was water at the bottom of the pan. If there is then drain the water out first.

    Insley is in a class by itself. I used to run a dragline about that size, either a 3-71 or 4-71. It'd dig. And you'll get it. The long sticks are boom and swing. The stick and bucket curl are on the floor pedals. It'll run fine in a while. Bantam hoes were set up the same way and latch the emergency stop down. Then you can use it again if needed. GBWYall! And you're put of hydraulic oil. That's why the pump is growling.

    No ! Not a super charger that is a blower driven by internal gears. The blower is really a scavenger pump. That's how the the engine runs. Also the 12 cylinder is not 2 inline 6 s. It the 6-93 used for the smaller 12vs . Used in forstery equipment. Theirs a bigger 12 variation that's a thing of its own.

    I just googled Insley. Retired heavy equipment mechanic here. Never heard of this brand. One of the Insley models is Kenebogen. This sounds German or @Scandinavian. Not sure, just a guess. I am finding lots of running model of the 840.

    Great video, you're going to need a small gas driven compressor, a carry around torch set ,and a case of Kroil( I like it better than Pb Blaster) just my opinion. Do you get to Worcester often, the Tool Shed is a great source for good used tools.

    You say “ 1971 “ like it’s a hundred years ago ! I rebuild outboards that are over 100 years old ! I guess for you being young 51 years ago seems like back when Noah had his Arc and the Dodge brothers made engines for Ford and 2 world wars ! I’ll say this you stuck to it until she ran ! Nice job 👍
