DIY Smart Home Guy creates how-to videos for smart home automation centered around Z-Wave and Zigbee devices. Review videos are generally centered around Hubitat Elevation, SmartThings and Vera. I personally run Hubitat as my primary smart hub, however I do test products on the hubs mentioned. I understand that a home automation hub is not a path for everyone. I chose this path because I am a firm believer is advanced automation and local control.

You know it's true love when your wife's patience with your glitchy smart home is stronger than the Wi-Fi signal!
Indeed! Thanks for joining us on the Livestream last night
Yep, that is so true about family & friends dont care about smarthouse tech. My wife cant seem 2 tell Alexa 'turn on kitchen', but her mouth dont stop saying 'honey, take out the trash'. Thx 4 sharing on Utube.
Sounds like she knows which voice assistant is more reliable
Thankfully, my cheapness kept me from making many mistakes. I watched dozens and dozens of videos and read lots of forum posts. I ended up with Lutron Caseta because I wanted as high of a WAF as possible. I've integrated my wired alarm system, garage doors, and am doing it all locally with Hubitat. I avoid wireless (anything) whenever possible. Next steps are integration with my PoE security cameras and their NVR, add maybe some work on room presence.
Congratulations on your career change, Pete. I hope your departure doesn't impact Hubitat too drastically. Looking forward to upcoming content.
Lastly, nobody in my circle of family and friends cares about my automated house. My wife only marginally cares because it's made her life a little easier.
Thank you. I hope to bring the same mix of information and goofiness to the new channel. Thanks for coming along for the ride.
Wifi sucks. Amen, replacing all my wifi bulbs this week. Wifi plugs are also out now because I constantly have issues.
Great job Pete! Welcome to the channel. Love the humor.
thanks!
I enjoy the injection of humor, great job!
more to come!
At 2:56 is amazing! Love it!
Haha!
Speak for your self - my significant other can't resist me when I start talking about our Z-Wave mesh network! Our pillow talk about the speed of Zigbee bindings though... Lookout, whew!
Kidding aside, great job Pete. Looking forward to the next chapter of DIY Smart Home Guy. We're rooting for you!
Eric - Inovelli
Thanks, Eric! Awesome job last night. I'm sure your SO couldn't wait for you to get home after watching that steamy tech talk.
@@DIYSmartHomeGuy1 🤣
I just got homey pro, starting from scratch on HA, runs locally
Smartthings has local control now
true. But not to the same extent as Hubitat and others. Still learning the system. Will have a review of the SmartThings station coming out soon
Great video Pete! I’m finding that the audio seems a bit “echoy”, or maybe I’m just getting old… 😊
thanks! Yeah, sound got a little weird. Next video is improved
someone needs to start a Smart Device wall of shame and put Eaton electronics at the very top. fairly expensive, and minimal support. if Lowes would PLEASE take them off the shelf and replace them with zooz or inovelli, that would be great for everyone
No experience with Eaton, but it would be great if big box stores carried Zooz and inovelli
The problem with the Eaton devices, in my opinion, is that they don't seem to have kept up with the times. Their standard Z wave stuff - we are talking things that are 10+ years old- worked very well for the time. It's sad they didn't keep up with the times
Just flash your wifi devices with an open source firmware and it becomes local controllable. Modern APs can handle hundreds of devices, so it's not a big issue either.
Correct. Most of my Wi-Fi devices do run local, but some still require a local integration. Might be testing out some new routers to see if Wi-Fi performance improves.
Perfect. It’s “just me” who care….
Well done Pete. Congratulations on the new venture! Oh, and Home Assistant is no longer the way you're describing it. I'd suggest moving away from the outdated stance. It's getting old listening to TH-camrs describe it that way, and those that still do sound out of touch with what's going on with the platform.
Thanks, Doug! Yeah, I’ll be diving into home assistant soon. I’m considering doing a livestream of me setting up home assistant for the first time to show what the experience is actually like for someone who has never done it. Could be fun!
@@DIYSmartHomeGuy1 I like your moxie Pete. However, as a seasoned demonstrator, I'd recommend setting the stage as carefully as possible. Yes, it's easy, but only if you choose the right approach. Don't do anything funky in other words. 😉
Yeah, it’s a risky choice, for sure. Could easily turn from a “how to” video into a “how not to”. But there are plenty of how-to videos out there. The idea of watching someone try something they’ve never done before to get a sense of what it is like appeals to me. And i always enjoy being a guinea pig. We’ll see if common sense prevails.
home assistant isnt that much work any more. you can do almost everyhting in the GUI unless you are dead set on node red or advanced configs/intrgrations in yaml. i rarely have to mess with yaml and most of the time i do, there are great guides and its not that hard.
wifi also isnt a bad thing, in most cases, when it can run local. I was very anti wifi when i was using smartthings or even hubitat, but with Home Assistant, its so much better. Ditch the cloud when you can, set up an IoT network and youre good to go. Ive got dozens of Kasa devices connected to home assistant and, other than a few bulbs, they are rock solid. Plus WLED, esphome, a bunch of MM wave sensors and a lot of the really cool stuff are wifi only.
Yes, I'll be getting into Home Assistant soon. It is much more approachable now. Excited to see how it works with Hubitat. And if it improves the wifi devices, all the better! Most of my wifi devices are local, but they still miss random commands, which is irritating (looking at you, LIFX). For my exterior lights, I've gone so far as to automate the off command multiple times over night just to make sure they turn off.
@@DIYSmartHomeGuy1 nice. HA is incredible. I was with ST for years, moved some stuff to hubitat, but then just dove into the deep end of home assistant and never looked back. Ive still got hubitat up and running, all my zwave devices are connected so i can have them migrated if the hub dies (dont want to repair 75+ devices), but that is just my radio. HE is really easy to pull into HA, which is the brains of my automation system. Looking forward to seeing you getting HA going and how it works for you.
Alexa and Google both deserve to be fired. I would like to see a hub comparison between Aeotec/Smartthings, Hubitat, Homekit and Home Assistant with normal people in mind who just want (need) simple and easy.
Or perhaps just a garbage disposal installation video😉
Good luck with the new endeavor, Peter. Have to agree - NObody cares. Yet, it can provide an outlet for the OCD Control Freak in anyone.
No? 😇
Thanks! Although sometimes it can feel like your smart home is controlling you instead of the other way around.
Did I miss something? Where is the normal smart home guy?
Hostile takeover. See the livestream from last night for the bloody details: th-cam.com/users/liveju8ew9GLQN4
What did I miss? Is there something you know now that you wish you knew before you got started in home automation? And, in case you missed it, the big announcement: th-cam.com/users/liveju8ew9GLQN4?feature=share
Sound on this video is all mucked up !!
Will try to work that out. Thanks for watching!
Seems like you dont have any experience with Homey pro. You are missing a lot. it is compatible with pretty much all kind of devices, though not the Samsung thing, smart thing or whatever it is called.
I do not, but it is on my radar. The honey pro advanced flows look very interesting. I hope to try it out soon
