DIY Smart Home Guy creates how-to videos for smart home automation centered around Z-Wave and Zigbee devices. Review videos are generally centered around Hubitat Elevation, SmartThings and Vera. I personally run Hubitat as my primary smart hub, however I do test products on the hubs mentioned. I understand that a home automation hub is not a path for everyone. I chose this path because I am a firm believer is advanced automation and local control.

There is a manual option for opening and closing the shade it the little button on the motor the same one you use to join the shade to a remote or a hub. Pressing the button once will set the shade to open once again will stop it and if all the way open a press at that point will send the shade down. Just in case anyone is w
That’s going to work great for my shades which are 10ft off the ground, lol.
@@2nd-place true but it’s still there in a pinch. Hopefully you are never testing your dexterity and aim with a broom.
When you control multiple shades together, are they syncronized well? I have a row of windows that I'd like to see open/close exactly at the same time and rate.
I have shades on either side of my sliding door that close at the same rate (assuming the speed setting is the same on both). I can’t vouch for shades that may be different sizes, but based on the way you can select a speed and the fact it is the same motor, I would presume they would open at the same rate but hopefully somebody else can chime in to verify.
Been looking for solution for a TALL window that gets afternoon sun, so this is timely for me. The solar charger is a game-changer as the header is 16' from floor.
Yeah, it definitely works well if you get sun (and you don’t put it in backwards)
What if you want verticals?
Casement windows are better than vertical sliders (speaking from a 7 time homeowner which has had both) casement are way more mechanically reliable, have better R value due to positive locking against the seal, easier to clean outside glass, larger viewing glass. Do you know you can get a folding crank handle?
Them’s fightin’ words! I stand my dislike of casement windows. The biggest issue for me is airflow. If the wind is blowing the wrong way you get no breeze. And they stick out from the house so you can’t even leave the windows open a crack in the rain or water gets in and the window can rot. And your windows must be different than ours because the outside of the window is impossible to clean without a ladder. Boooooo casement windows!!!!
It's not necessariily easy to reach but a momentary press of the button on the motor (the same one used for pairing and other functions) will open or close the shade manually.
Good point! Thanks
If I do the zigbee version, can I just add it to my existing zigbee Home Assistant controller without the hub you used. I do not see any info on their site in regards to this. Thanks!
This is a great video. I'll be checking smartwings out.
I loved that you showed the real time install in the corner of the screen.
Glad you liked that. If I showed uncut installation for most things I install I would probably be banned from TH-cam.
I like SmartWings shades as well. But I must agree that they don't taste as good as Spicy Garlic Wings! Nice vid!
Haha! Thanks! Such a weird name for a shade company, but they make good stuff
I see you have your shades connected through Hubitat. Are you using their driver? If so, is your battery levels reporting correctly?
I hope your channel grows significantly, thanks for your insight! I've been on the fence about SmartWings for a while. I like the witty pop up comments lol
Awesome, thank you!
I have Caseta system. How did you get the Pico to control your shades? I'm still researching what smart shades to get. Its either smartwings or yoolax.
I have the shades connected to my Hubitat Elevation hub. The Lutron Caseta Smart Bridge Pro is also connected to the hubitat hub, which enables me to use apps in the Hubitat to connect the lutron pico to the shades.
Do they offer skylight shades?
Since you installed the Solar panel on the inside of the screen, does it keep the battery fully charged or do you have to plug in a USB charger like in the winter months? GREAT VIDEO!
Thanks! Even through the screen the shade is staying charged. But I get an insane amount of light on that window so your mileage may vary
Super helpful video! Thank you!
super thanks!
Still over $500 per window, waaaay over my budget. 😅
Just an FYI-if you have a big enough order, send SmartWings an email and they’ll give you a bulk discount. I’m working on getting 22, and they offered 20% off of the total
@@hardwarecompugeek if $500 is expensive, even if he could get that 20% discount on a single shade, spending $400 isn't much better. I bought a non-motorized shade for my 4' wide window for $35, meaning even the discounted price of the motorized shade would be more than 11 times as expensive.
The price should come down over time, hopefully by the time you're getting sick of manually open and close your windows everyday.
Great video! These look great in your home
“I am not particularly good at providing for my family” 😅
Thanks excellent vid
Great advice.
Cheap shades, cheap motors. Not quality by any means. Get what you pay for.
