Shane, I'm really happy to see you do this video. For those who don't know, Hubitat is not a new kid on the block and has been around for quite awhile. I've had the Hubitat Hub for over two years and bought it because I was becoming dissatisfied with SmartThings. It's been a really solid device and I was really happy to see their Homekit announcement. I'm always happy to be able to add a single hub to my network and have it be able to handle dozens of devices rather than have them all added via WiFi. As you pointed out this is great for adding your existing or new inexpensive Z-Wave devices. As far as Aqara goes, I already have a couple of their camera/hubs so whether their Zigbee devices only work with Aqara is not an issue as once they're in Homekit it makes little difference how they got there. @@elmasryahmed you can add drivers for devices not yet officially supported via Package Manager. It’s a community app that you can add to the hub.
There are a lot of other excellent apps in there also.
What is the option being able to integrate Ring Security Alarm Systems into Hubitat instead of Homebridge ? It doesn’t look like it is a clean/reliable possibility at this point. Maybe I am wrong? Thoughts?

Great Video Shane. I saw this video last month which encouraged me to take the plunge into Hubitat to level up my HK setup.
I am pleased to say with the help of the Hubitat Community, I have successfully added Govee Products into my Apple Home with LAN integration. I will say when venturing outside the compatible device list there is a steep learning curve. In case anyone is curious, I can “Natively” adjust Color and dimming within HK for numerous Govee Lights.
If Govee is added with Cloud integration only, you will face very annoying delays therefore LAN integration is crucial. However, it works and works incredibly well, I highly recommend giving it a shot if ever interested.

Thanks for another very informative video. I just ordered one. While my home are primary consists of Lutron and aqara devices, but this hub’s virtual switch capability is most interesting to me. I have been use aqara smart plug as virtual switch for some of my automations, it is kind of waste. Now I can finally have some true virtual switches now.
Nice! I love having the ability to use virtual switches for automations. Always used homebridge for that in the past, but now I can add them through Hubitat!
Great video Shane! I hope could be the solution to all my problems… I am currently renovating a house we just bought in the UK and will be putting LED strip lighting throughout. There are very few controllers out there that can convert the Zigbee commands to 0-10V dimming for the strips. Do you know if through the hub I could use these Zigbee>0-10V controllers to enable the lights to slowly come up to the correct brightness if doing it through HomeKit?? I hope that makes sense 😂
Great review Shane! I was waiting to pull the trigger on a BUlldog Water shutoff until a good hub was found. This Hubitat seems to be it. Less expensive than the Thinka and available now, and provides an actual faucet category in Home.

Shane thank you very much for video. I want to ask a question . I think we can create virtual button on Hubitat, but can we change the virtual button type? For example, can we create a virtual faucet and transfer it to homekit (HomeKit faucet device) ? Can we show a relay that we added in the habitat as an outlet? if it does these i want to buy one Hubitat.

For Aqara devices, some of them work, it helps if you have ikea tradfri devices as repeaters
This subject is rather timely for me! I was originally heavily invested in IRIS (mostly 1st Gen) by Lowes. It was one of the very few (if not only) independently operable monitoring systems on the market, free of a subscription and yet accessible anywhere in the world. Imagine my disappointment when Lowes gave it up. Though I received a “buy out” from Lowes after they unsuccessfully tried to sell the system I loathed the idea of having to rebuild from scratch every piece (sensors, cameras, switches, plugs) of my home monitoring/automation system. I researched months for any hints at some entity possibly adopting the hardware. Patience rewarded me when Hubitat arrived upon the scene in the form of adding many of the IRIS sensors/some plugs to their already voluminous list of varying manufacturer’s hardware! I was pleased as the most important pieces, being home monitoring system sensors, made the list along with most of the plugs/switches as I desired to restore the home monitoring system ASAP. I ordered and received the then C5 version of the Hubitat hub (later upgrading to the C7 when it came out) and rebuilt my home monitoring system in Hubitat. What a relief! There were a few idiosyncrasies regarding the hub interface in those days but nothing too terrible in managing once being aware of some workarounds - especially the alarm klaxon. My chief complaint about my system is the IRIS sensors were notorious at burning through batteries. Too, when they went dead they were sometimes difficult to get back in to the home monitoring app as well since they would occasionally “disappear” - again, most importantly, the alarm klaxon. Somewhat recently I jumped to the Apple HomeKit ecosystem as I desired a means to monitor/automate my home through an already existing and useful app already a secure part of the Apple IOS. Thus I created another independently operable monitoring system even more easily accessible from anywhere in the world. I have not yet transitioned some remaining home automation items and still run those separately on Hubitat, but this news has me pleased with the idea of integrating them within HomeKit as a single solution!

Can you access your zwave devices via the hub through your smartphone if you're not at home? If yes, is there any kind of subscription fee or anything for that function?
Is it possible to do the same thing with home assistant? at least if you have the hub and or zwave/zigbee radios and use the homekit plugins?

Can you do a comparison between this Hubitat and Homey? I’ve been using Homey for that purpose and the experience is great
After my main water valve failed to turn the water off after a sensor detected water on the floor, I pulled the plug on the Smartthings hub. I now have the new Hubitat hub and I'm now moving devices over one at a time. The hard part is getting every device to default to prepare it for pairing. But now I do not have to worry about a server going down and rules not working :)

I have been using a Hubitat Elevation for 18 months or more. Until the HomeKit integration launched I used their MakerAPI application to expose Zigbee devices to Homebridge, but direct integration is a game changer.
Hubitat has a very powerful, and to my mind much more intuitive rules engine than Apple's cludge using Shortcuts, and I have some quite complex rules to manage Venetian blinds based on Zigbee motors, the position of the sun and relative brightness of a shaded and exposed pair of light sensors that I don't think I could have done with native HomeKit automations / shortcuts.
I find HomeKit automations frequently fail for no obvious reason, but Hubitat rules appear to be rock solid. I don't use the Hubitat for any presence based logic as that is one thing HomeKit just makes seamless, but otherwise I prefer Hubitat. It's so integral to my setup that I bought a spare a few months ago in case my hub fails - it was worth the cost to know I can restore a backup onto a fresh hub and be back up and running in minutes if the hardware should fail.

Hi Shane, thanks for all you great videos. Re Hubitat - do you still need the end device’s hub, or does the Hubitat replace it eg I have a bunch of Zigbee roller blind motors that run off a Tuya zigbee hub. Thanks again
Thanks for watching Steve. Hubitat can replace certain zigbee or z-wave hubs. Many Tuya zigbee devices can be paired to Hubitat, like the zigbee water shut off valve and lightstrip seen in video. Check out the device compatibility list and/or their support pages (link in description)
Are there different outdoor cameras I can now import in Homekit?
Hey. I’ve got a Nanoleaf bulb bought from an Apple Store. I have a simple automation that turns it on at 10% brightness at sunset and turns it off after 4 hours. Well the turn on works as it should but it never turns off. What could be wrong?
I would buy a Hubitat Hub, but I would like to bring in all my devices. In order to bring in Lutron devices you need the pro version of the hub. I already have Smartthings and Hoobs. Also, I would like to wait and let this Matter things work itself out.

If I recall correctly, they came with the Eve smart button that I got years ago.
just got the HE. I got it with the hope of being able to control magic home dimmers in HomeKit. Took some doing but I got the dimmers into HE but then discovered they are not compatible with HomeKit. Now trying to figure out how to possibly make them operate with Flic button without much success. It's a powerful hub but not exactly user friendly if the user is a noob.
Will this integrate Nest products into HomeKit?
I see Google assistant is one of the compatible devices. So does that mean a Google nest can be connected for the music capabilities?

Thank you Shane. I have some questions about the FirstAlert Zwave smoke alarm that you paired with the Hubitat. Is it hardwired to the house or battery operated? If it’s hardwired, do you have other alarms wired in the same circuit (usually an orange wire connects them)? If so, if one of the dumb alarms goes off, does it trigger this Z wave alarm in homkit?
It's battery but can be adapted to hardwire. Personally for me I prefer Nest for that and then use ecolink firefighters to bring them into hubitat/homekit
@shane what’s your thoughts on node red for HomeKit and homebridge?
Just wish there was a quality hub for Vivint. I have Hoobs but it’s not that reliable. It goes out at least once a week making me log on to a laptop to reset it. And even when it works it’s a little slow.
I was getting ready to disconnect my Hubitat due to leaving the Amazon eco-verse. I am so excited to be able to use all my old z-wave devices in HomeKit.
Hubitat just needs a few tweaks to their software. So many of my various zigbee devices, I had to go into the device settings and try different "generic Zigbee X" device types to get to work rather than it just finding the right one. I have some Zwave and zigbee buttons that also do not properly show the correct number of buttons. Hubitat gets a B+ I think. It works with almost everything I've tried. All my 22 year old Z-wave devices paired with it and show up in Apple Home. My GoControl 2-button zwave controllers though only show as 1 button.
Tempted and was wondering if this would be a good choice. Have older smarthingsv2. But big downfall for my setup is lutron switches everywhere and do not have lutron pro hub. Just basic lutron hub. So eliminates too many devices from visibility to dashboards and integrations without more money.
You would need the lutron pro 2 hub as Hubitat communicates 100% locally via telnet instead of the cloud api. (Local is always preferable)

I have been thinking about pre ordering the hoobs pro but been hesitant due to its high price. After watching this video, I am leaning towards this 100 dollar hub instead. I am new on the home automation world and getting ready to dive in deeper in 2023 and beyond. The question is , should I get this hub or go for the hoobs?

With hoobs pro you wont have the ability to add Z-wave devices, so bear that in mind. That being said, Hubitat is a little more of tinkering than regular hubs, but it's really good and powerful. I'd definitely go for the Hubitat hub for the posssibility of Z-wave devices and due to the price tag.

Can you add roborock vacuum robot with it ?
Im currently with Homebridge. What I struggle to understand is, with the role-out of Matter. Will there be any need for such hubs and Pi’s in the future?
Afaik products like Phillips or Lutron (and other hub-based systems) still connect to homekit via the hub. So even if a product is matter certified I believe it can still require a separate hub as that's the actual device that connects to a homepod/appletv.

Great video, you can add all your Aqara devices to home kit integration by link them to a virtual device then add each virtual device to HK, @hubitat should start to natively support Aqara devices since it’s now using standard Zigbee 3.0.

Hi Shane - Another great video. When you (and habitat) say the hub supports Lutron Caseta and Philips Hue, does that mean as a replacement for the hubs those hubs (meaning you can use the say the Caseta dimmer switch & pico remote or Hue bulbs without need for the Lutron Bridge or Philips Hub)? This would be really interesting if so--otherwise, it's less intriguing for my growing setup--especially since I should be able to bring Z-Wave devices in via Hoobs Pro or a Home Assistant bridged solution.
Hi Dan. Thanks for watching. As zigbee bulbs, Philips Hue may be able to pair directly to the Hubitat hub, although pairing the bridge is the recommended method.
You would not be able to eliminate the Lutron Caseta bridge as Lutron uses a proprietary wireless protocol to connect their devices to their hubs.
Can this replace homebridge ?
Will you need this though with matter coming out or more for your older products? Sorry, I just don’t know.

What about Home Assistant? I have all my ZWave and Zigbee devices in my Homekit no issue with the Home Assistant bridge.
Nothing wrong with home assistant. It just won't give you native homekit support and requires much more of a learning curve for your average person than something like Hubitat.
My question is what happened to mater 1.0?

HomeKit doesn't support certain device categories like robot vacuums or appliances yet. WIth Matter on the horizon, we should see some improvements for this.
As soon as they have the native support for HomeKit, I'll purchase one to replace my old SmartThings hub connected via Home Assistant.
If I’m understanding correctly this device is basically a less expensive version of HOOBS? If so how does it compare as far as numbers of “foreign” devices it’s capable of processing? Great information as always Shane! 💪🏼😎👍🏼
2:54 - As both a Hubitat c8 and SmartThings owner, I can say this table is a bit misleading. Row 5-7 is all repeating the same thing in different ways-- running hub locally and without internet. And it’s also not true that all installed apps run locally. I know some custom apps like the MyQ lite integration requires wifi. Lastly, SmartThings now has many local automations and functionality as well with the new Edge drivers.
I like your channel the best. Officially hooked. I’ve saved over 100 different videos with the most views so I’m now familiar with the handful of guys doing HomeKit. Your all great. But I like this format the best.

Have you had any issues with Z-Wave devices being available in HomeKit for automations after adding them to HomeKit via Hubitat? I added an Econet Bulldog valve and it shows up in HomeKit, but I can’t use it in an automation. I also have some Eve water sensors that are not available for triggering automations, so I doubt the issue is with the Z-Wave devices. I have upgraded to the new home architecture, so I’m thinking maybe that is the cause?
Hey Brandon. No this is not an issue... it's just a limitation of the Apple Home App. For whatever reason, Apple does give us the option to automate our water accessories. However, you can do this in 3rd party apps like the Eve app, Controller for HomeKit, or Home+.

My question would be, does the current Hubitat have even the built hardware to support Thread or Matter with future firmware?
They are part of the matter consortium so eventually they will support matter once it's nailed down.
Thread... probably not. Matter is just an application layer and hubs are one of the product categories supported by Matter. They should be able to gain Matter support for the hub.
@@ShaneCreates Agreed on the current iteration of HE (C7) To add thread would require another zigbee radio if they don't want to time slice.
I wait untill the Homey Pro (2023) will come out...only need of 1 hub instead of a dozen...

Hi Shane. Well you convinced me to spend money on more smart home stuff yet once again. My kids do not need a college education anyways! So I picked up the Hubitat hub and the Zooz Scene controller switch you showed. Got all hooked up, but only the switch, not the buttons, are showing up in HK. Did I miss something somewhere? TIA
Hey Shaun. In the HomeKit Integration settings in Hubitat, you should have an option under the zooz switch to "export as" either switch or button. Change it to button to expose all the buttons to homekit.
If you don't see that, make sure you turn ON "show accessory classes and characteristics"
@@ShaneCreates Have you been successful with double presses on the buttons? I can only get single press and hold to register on HK. It shows all the press options, but does not do anything with a double. Also, it seems this can only be a single switch or a 5 button controller. Not a switch and a 4 button controller. Are you seeing anything different?
Good morning Shane, opinion question…I am getting ready to order some smart roller shades. You he company offers 4 different motors based on your smart home environment, HomeKit being one option but double the cost of the others. I am leaning towards using the Zigbee option and a Hubitat hub. This would save approximately $30 per window. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Could be a good option to save some money, but I can't say for certain what will work directly with the Hubitat hub. I'd recommend looking at the device compatibility list (should be linked in video description) and/or reaching out to the Hubitat support team for confirmation.

I have the bulldog valve shutoff through Hubitat. I see it in HomeKit as a water valve too. I can control the Bulldog in HomeKit no problem. The problem is that it’s not open to automations. I can not get it to show up in the room it is in. So far I can’t use my Aqara leak sensors to trigger it to turn off. Does anyone have a thought on how to get it to work in automations in HomeKit? Hubitat says it’s a HomeKit thing. Anyway to bring it in or change it to a simple switch. My a simple switch will show up in automations or shortcuts. Thanks
Unfortunately Apple doesn’t let us control water valves or sprinklers through automations in the home app. However, it IS possible in HomeKit natively, the home app just doesn’t give us access to it.
The solution is to simply use a 3rd party HomeKit app to create the automation. Controller for HomeKit app, Home+ app, or the Eve app(free) will all work and allow you to create that HomeKit automation.
Serious question, why use home kit at all? What does it give you that you can’t get through Hubitat alone? Even dashboards you could use ActionTiles. Am I missing something here?
A few for me personally: voice control with siri, Apple Home Key (locks), HomeKit Secure Video features like doorbell chimes & face recognition on the HomePods and Apple TV.
Hopefully doesn't come across as a dig but I'm a bit lost on how this is considered such a "game changer" when this feature has been available (and I personally use) in Home Assistant for quite a while. Any Homekit certified devices I add directly into homekit, anything else such as zigbee, z-wave, wifi etc is added to home assistant and bridged to my homekit. Works well and really should have been listed as one of the options when you went through them. What I'm personally looking forward to that might be slightly more game changing is a matter supported tuya zigbee hub. Allowing me to use some of the features only enabled in the tuya app (such a multiway light switches) whilst being able to stick with the overall ecosystem of my choice (which is currently a hybrid of homekit and home assistant with a smattering of google in there for good measure.
The big issue is the average person doesn't wanna set up HA and want to have a small all in one package. Also the fact that Hubitat will be certified and HA will not. While a lot of us are quite content to tinker and explore, the majority just want stuff to work quickly and easily.

@@enriquelithgow1748 The issue with this is in the video Shane specifically mentions alternative options and how this is the "only way" and there's radio silence in regards to HA being at least an option for those who might want to give it a try. A little more faith in the "average person" as well especially the type that is into home automation. Also having watched the video Hubitats UI and setup process doesn't look a whole lot different or easier. Anyways I'm no shill for HA and in fact my goal is to end up on a manjority "matter/homekit" setup throughout the year but again I think it's important for people to know there is and has been for quite a while another option to achieve this task.

Pretty cool product that may help users keep using their zigbee and zwave devices as the future turns to Matter. Thank you for pointing out that this doesn’t support Aqara products. I was hopeful that it would, but it seems Aqara wants to keep you using their hub connected to the internet which I will always feel is risky.
It does with community drivers but you need good repeaters (ikea ones are great) or they tend to drop off the mesh. The reason is older Aqara stuff doesn't follow the zigbee protocol 100%. Newer ones that are zigbee 3.0 are fine without ikea repeaters.
Can the Hubitat be run by multiple iphones?
I got Hubitat to integrate my T6 termosthat to my HomeKit and it works for a couple of days and them automation stops works. I tried to create basic rules in Hubitat but it seems to be a product for programmers only. I couldn’t create a simple rule to set the termosthat to 72 at 9:30 pm and always got an error ni tried tule machine instead and I was missing in action in that complicated interface. I am ready to put this little box in the trash a get a new thermostat HomeKit compatible.

This hole matter thing is confusing AF 🤦🏽♂️. When the news came out the idea was one hub and everything connects. Turns out you still need a hub from company A to connect the products to company B. 🥴 🥴🤪. So I still need for example a aqara hub to get their products into homekit 😏

Yes... Most ikea stuff works with it.
Is a Hubitat Subscription required?
No. The only subscriptions for hubitat are Hub Protect (basically and extended warranty) and Remote Admin (You would use this if you constantly programming it remotely. It is not needed if you have a VPN) Remote dashboard control is always free.

Homekit integration does not support LAN devices or Locks. For that reason, although I still bought it to drop SmartThings, I continue to use a third party plugin along with Homebridge so that I can integrate everything connected with the Hubitat Hub with Homekit. Hubitat says this limitation is imposed by Apple which is disappointing.
True but you can use virtual switches to bypass that.
@@enriquelithgow1748 While true, the “unofficial” plugin accomplishes the exact same thing with no artificially excluded device types. Not to mention the countless hours saved from not creating virtual switches and linking them to the true device. “Native” integration offers no advantage if it leaves out devices.
@@evlnte I can create a virtual switch in about 5 seconds. The advantage goes to it just works. No fuss no muss. As to the artificial imposing I get that but that's apple's decision to conform so one can get certification. Really the only thing you need virtual switches for are for barrier devices like locks and garage door openers. Everything else comes thourgh... Even things attached to a Hue or Lutron bridge come through via hubitat to Homekit. Again the main issue is that it's no muss or fuss and just plain works. That cannot be said for asking for a novice to set up Homebridge to do what they want to do. I'm not telling you or anyone else to abandon home bridge in favor of the built in integration, but I can say that even for advanced users like myself who do like to tinker, having one less device in the mix makes it very appealing and it's easy to set up.
I just order Zemismart hub so I can use Homekit.
I use homey for z-wave hub
Unfortunately Homey uses the cloud and any data you generate goes to them. Hubitat is %100 local and does not allow data to leave the hub.

just run Home Assistent with a Z-Wave and Zigbee stick. This is the best solution.
That's fine but a lot of people just want stuff to work out of the box and not have to constantly tinker. By the time you get lets say an rpi or always on pc, zigbee and z-wave stick, you've far exceeded the $99 that hubitat costs.
Recommending Home Assistant to your average person is not the best solution.
Just a recommendation on your Smoke/CO detector...don't use it. At least don't use it for both. Smoke is lighter than air and rises to the ceiling. CO is heavier and drops to the floor. So your multi-detector only works for one or the other reliably. I install both all of the time in houses around where I live and always use one for each detection. Smoke on the ceiling or top of the wall and then the CO near the floor.

No, it’s all US, it started as SmartThings users who got tired of it after Samsung took over, and created their own device. Plus it’s all local, you don’t need to send any info outside of your network, unless you want to use your dashboard outside the home.

@@dannycabrera8466 that said, sending it to HomeKit may not be straightforward. I’m going to assume it uses a network connection to bring it into Hubitat. Apple blocks devices like Hubitat from importing network based devices, it’s an Apple thing.
There is a work around using virtual switches and rules inside Hubitat, but just be aware of that if you go down that path.

I started off with SmartThings years ago, and switched to Hubitat a couple years ago when ST started to go down hill.
I’ve wanted HomeKit to be my interface, and have screwed around with HomeBridge and HOOBS, but it was never completely stable, and the Pi’s would go offline from time to time.
I use Hubitat as my brain unit, anything you can think of, it can do. There is a ton of community support, custom apps and drivers. I have GE appliances that use SmartHQ, a user sat down and wrote all the code to be able to use them in Hubitat, and he doesn’t even have the appliances, it was just a project he wanted to do.
The Hubitat roll out of HomeKit has been great, I’ve not run into any hiccups other than those caused by Apple.
Apple blocks the use of Barrier Devices, ie door controllers and locks. They both can be gotten around with virtual switches and rules in Hubitat, the only downside is Garage Doors won’t show up in CarPlay.
Also Apple lacks some stuff as far as appliances go, and text to speech. It really doesn’t know what to do with appliances, or how to show their status, and having spoken notifications is a nice feature.
I’m closer to my end goal now more than I ever was before. Hubitat runs all my rules and automations, I use HomeWidget for control from my phone, and I’m switching over to HomePods for my voice control.
The improvements I’d like to see at this point are on Apples side, open things up so HomeWidgets works better, let me do text to speech announcements on my HomePods, send notifications to my AppleTV.
All in all, it’s been a great addition, and it works really good.
