    Smartthings Hub v3 is still one of the best ways to get started with home automation. Its a simple way to get your smart home up and running, and you can still extend it to use things like openHAB in if you want!

      I have the Smarththings hub (V2) with a Smartthings button (V3) and regardless how I tell the button to turn on/off 5 Lifx bulbs.... it will only turn on/off one bulb at a time? Is there a way to tell it to turn the whole room on/off at the same time?

    I have Smartthings version 2 for almost 2 years now. Paralel I installed local openhab2 server and gradually I started to move all devices to OH. Now I have enough experience in OH to say it opens wide range of bindings and posiibilies compared to Smartthings. However if somebody wants simple smarthome and not tech guy without programming skills. Smartthings can be perfect choice, as it supports wide range of things and has fexible and simple roule creation tool for normal users. OH is also working on such solutions but they are not there. I really enjoyed this video and learned about ST from older videos. Thanks István

    Sorry for a dump question. Just want to confirm that the Smartthing Hub/OpenHab are not be able to control any wifi devices?
    In my case, I had a couple of Hue bulbs and wifi light switches had been installed and they are working perfectly fine with the Google home hub. But they're not "smart"/"automated" yet. I'd like to expand my smart home like adding an motion sensor to control those light, etc. I dont think I can program/schedule/interact with them via the smarthing hub/openhab hey?

    Thanks for the video Bill. Sugestions for the next video with Smarthings v3 deep dive. (1) cover non usage of samsung sensors ( the offer is very limited and plugin them should be a no brainer, litle value add for the video) (2) Cover the openhab integration as you mentioned (3) Cover the IFTTT integration ( if possible) (4) Create a few rules to understand the capabilities.(5) mention a few concrete limitations vs openhab/ smart assistant (6)Smarthings App and Hub. Why both? In summary , a review of v3 in all its glory, what makes me buy this, invest time( even more expensive) instead of a Raspberry Pi3 with homeassistant/ openhab. Cheers and thanks for the video again.

    One question: does the v3 hub work in germany with zigbee products?
    Because i am not really sure if kt works in germany they dont sell the smartthings hub in the eu

    • @yoyoTechKnows
      @yoyoTechKnows  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Daniel, thanks for watching. I believe that EU has different frequencies for zigbee and zwave so you would need to make sure they devices match the hub. If you had a NA hub, you would need NA devices and vice versa! As an option, take a look at openHAB, I know that you can get an EU based controller for zwave amzn.to/2SNHPxc and zigbee amzn.to/2LikMIC. Don't forget to subscribe! :-)

    Hi YoYo Tech, I have the Smarthings 2. I have also been considering getting a motion sensors for my house. Originally, from your previous video, I was looking at Aeon Labs Aeotec Z-Wave Multi-Sensor 6. Or should I consider the Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor. Would that work better with my smart things. Not to mention its a few dollars less.

    • @yoyoTechKnows
      @yoyoTechKnows  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi iteasier! both are great, for me I might choose the Aeotec Multi geni.us/Ybz5uI , it is a ZWAVE device and has so much packed into it. Also, because it is ZWAVE I know it works with most other hubs/solutions as well. The smartthings motion is ZIGBEE, which will work great with Smartthings, but not as many hubs support ZIGBEE as Z-Wave. Thanks for watching!

    • @yoyoTechKnows
      @yoyoTechKnows  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is much simpler to do advanced things in openHAB, for example - if you want music to turn on when you come home, nice and loud during the day throughout the week, but quiet at night, and not at all after 9pm, and a different station on Saturdays......this is just a crazy example, but doing this in openHAB is super simple. (smartthings can do this, but it would be more work) . Another area would be the number of products openHAB can work with, even custom gadgets. (arduino, particle core's etc) . If you are just starting out, SmartThings should be good, but I always find I hit a point in which I need openHAB. That said I still use both! :-) . Hope that helps, thanks for watching.

    Thanks for the good explanation!
    I wasn't sure why the hub was needed as I have the SmartThings app coming with Samsung Galaxy S9+. Seems like that is not enough to control these sensors as those use some other protocols than simply being connected to WiFi.
    By the way, how can you set up sequences of actions when something is triggered? Is there a website where you can configure your brain with events and logical connections of actions? Thanks.

    • @yoyoTechKnows
      @yoyoTechKnows  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! Once you have the hub setup, you can start adding devices. There is a section in the smartthings app called automations, in here you can create rules "if this happens, then do this"

    Hi Yoyo...It will be asome if you can make a video how to use Samsung Smartthings in LOCAL environment. I know they release some functions but there many doubt what will work or not. They just say try it!, but we are talking of a big budget here... it is not smart to do that. Another nice video can be to make a tutorial project with OpenHub from zero up to make an automation, maybe to turn a light on with a motion sensor. This will help to clarify a lot of things.

    • @yoyoTechKnows
      @yoyoTechKnows  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Aldo, I don't know of an easy way to determine what is running local, I do know that its very limited. I don't know if you could truly run smartthings in a local only setup. (would be an interesting experiment). Take a look at openHAB, or stay tuned as I am working with Hubitat which will run 100% local. Don't forget to subscribe, and thanks for watching!.

    Bill - As usual I enjoyed your great video! Some questions - with V3 having wifi, does that mean it can directly control wifi smart devices in addition to zigbee and zwave, or is it just cable of running while "not having a cat 5 cable"? Next query that I think I already know - when you migrate from V2 to V3 do you have to go around and remove all the devices from V2 and then add them to V3. Another nagging fear I have is what happens to all my devices if my hub dies and they cannot be removed from that association. Some devices have a force method to return them to factory status (if you still have the document...), but some of mine do not. My hub is getting quite old... ;^(

    • @yoyoTechKnows
      @yoyoTechKnows  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi George, thanks for watching and for the feedback! I know there is limited support for local network access from smartthings, but it does exist, especially if you use custom devices and applications via the developer console. The new hub will talk to these devices the same as the old, just over wifi instead of hard wired. Migration is non-existent, so yes you need to delete all from the old HUB and start again! That's actually a great point I forgot to point out in the video. Don't worry about removing association, you can use any hub to send the "disassociate" command and then just hit the button on the devices. Hope that answers your questions (feel like I rambled a bit) :-)

    • @georgenoren2174
      @georgenoren2174 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Bill. Now I can sleep soundly waiting for that fateful day when my hub goes dark. I did not know that it doesn't have to be the "owning" hub that does the disassociation.

    Thanks for your video. I just bought the hub, sensors and a button. I need the button to disarm the monitoring. It doesn't work. It allows me to change location mode, but not security state, which has no sense. The hub is a disappointed to me :(

    • @yoyoTechKnows
      @yoyoTechKnows  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Huy,
      Do a search for custom actions, and look at the dev console in smartthings as there are many ways to get around this I believe. If I come across an example I will post here. Sometimes it takes a little patience and experimenting to find a solution to your problem/plans but often it can be found!.. Good luck, thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe!

I want to connect multiple smart devices, not necesssarily to communicate with each other, but being able to connect more devices, if this is not it, what can I use? Thanks, great video

    • @ONI1013.
      @ONI1013. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edelmira Soto - Technically you can connect 231 Zigbee and z-wave devices to your hub. Additionally you can connect other “smart” devices that are not z-wave or Zigbee (as long as the company has an API with SmartThings), like smartphones, WiFi and Bluetooth devices.

      Hi Brent, thanks for watching. I agree local processing is best if you are running an advanced system, this is why I run among others openHAB and SmartThings. ST Should be looking at the direction Hubitat is taking. There are so many failure points with cloud processing, as a former ST user I experienced them all. Since moving to Hubitat my system has been more secure, with no outages. When the cloud goes down your smart home gets dumb really fast. That said; as usual another good video, keep them coming.

    I have a question? Im new to all this & just bought myself the Alexa Dot so I can control my Samsung TV without using the remote.
    But for it to work i 1st had to connect the smart things app on my phone to my TV & then connect Alexa to my phone (like you do for setup) before it would work.. Now! it works fine I can turn TV on off change Chanel do volume Blablabla & so on...
    Now here's my problem, as soon as i leave the house with my phone the Alexa will no longer control the TV for my wife & kids for obvious reasons the app is on my phone with me so out of range of the home network.. So, would buying one of these solve that problem ? would this work to control my TVs in my front room through the Alexa Dot & also my other TV in the bedroom with another Alexa Dot or would this not work..??

    Why didn't you bother to actually show how you install the V3 hub. FYI I just purchased a V3 hub and find out via Samsung support that unless you have a S7 phone or newer you can't use the App to install it, as it won't even be seen in the PlayStore. I have a Note 3 and apparently this is a fact. Support also tells me that that the ONLY difference in V2 & V3 is that they dropped the battery backup in V3. What Samsung idiot thought this was progress?

    • @yoyoTechKnows
      @yoyoTechKnows  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Bill P! There is a new app for the new hub, and I believe they are planning to phase out the old app! I was able to use my Pixel to install both the new and the old app. I have the old app working with my ver.2 hub, and the new app working with my v3 hub. I never saw the use of the battery in the v2. so dropping this could account for the reduction in cost for v3? Hope you figured it out, sorry to hear you are having a challenging setup!
