  • Making silicone over foam tires (silongies)
I know I say it different then it’s spelled I always add the P and say Spliongies but it’s all the same.
This is a great mod for non mag cars on un prepped tracks.

Keeping the family tradition going of slot car racing

A track dab of mineral oil at one end of card board to run wheel set across will smooth and uniform the wheel and will also assist in kicking off the cure of silicone!

I've seen guys making these silicone coated sponge tires for their home tracks for almost 20 years. No question in my mind that they work. I saw one old- timer spin his newly coated tires on an axle in a slow turning drill & he use a small piece of glass that was wet to even out his tire's surface. He said it made the surface smoother than when he rolled them on something flat. Your method seems to work good for you, so I wouldn't change anything. If you used a piece of wax paper to roll them on, they wouldn't stick & you wouldn't have to keep throwing away the cardboard pieces. If you got some extra axles, you could do a batch of tires, one per axle, & drill out a block of wood (2X4) to stand the axles in while the tired dried. I once made sponge tires, but the home group I sometimes run with uses only urethane tires & doesn't allow sponge, silicones., or silicone coated sponge tires to be used. So I won't be making tires anytime soon.

Yeah a lot of places don’t allow silicone because they put down a glaze that makes foam tires have a lot less grip. I’m gonna have to try some of these tricks especially the wax paper thing. I use a piece of plexiglass most of the time that the silicone peels off of pretty easy but I recently used it to mix some epoxy and ruined it. Thanks for checking out the video!!

Mineral oil then after silicone has fully cured remove the surface oil with alcohol.

@@777fiddlekrazy, I hadn't heard of using the mineral oil before to smooth out the silicone. But if it works, keep using it. If there is any "baby oil" around your house, it's just mineral oil with a scent to make it smell good. Your video mentioned using oil or grape soda for tire traction. Don't, unless you want to clean up a mess. Both are apt to weaken the track tape's or braid's glue & cause both to lift. Don't create problems for yourself.

It’s 6x16. Loads of fun if your into oval racing. Some people get bored pretty quick going in circles but I could do it all day.

I tried to coat rubber tires on some old 1/43 scale slot cars I have with limited success. gave a little more grip but pealed off very quick and easy after only a few laps.
