I got a tiny little citronella in March. This baby has grown OUT and then not much up…well, about 4 foot and about 6 foot wide. Not exaggerating! I am so happy to have found you! Thank you so much! :-)
They do get pretty big lol. I had to put my bigger one in the ground and the others are still growing in containers. I'm always here if you need anything so don't hesitate to ask. Thanks for stopping in! I really appreciate your support! 😊 Have a beautiful day 🌱
Thanks for the video! I’m a landscaper and I planted one for my boss and it’s gotten huge! I just trimmed a few little branches off to prop for my home. South Louisiana mosquitos are no joke 😂
It gets a little crazy sometimes lol. I love my citronella. I plan on getting some more. I have one but the florida weather is really taking its toll on it, even with the shade cloth and on my patio. The air itself has been over 100°f so not too many of my plants are happy right now with the severe weather we are having. Thanks for stopping in. Wishing you the best of luck with your citronella paint 🌱
Super useful info between trimming and getting them to propagate... I know now how to trim them up better and hopefully avoid the giant Citronella die off I had on my deck. thanks again!
Your very welcome! I'm so happy to help. I wish I had more time for updated videos. Life has been so hectic over the past few years. I have so many more plants now and I changed my gardening technique a bit. Soil, nutrients etc.. Hoping I can get back into filming again soon. I have so much I would like to show everyone here 🌱 Have a wonderful day!
It's May n my plant just filled out from the Winter cold. I'm propagating this with some peppermint n placing them all around my house n garden. Since u said that about the rain, I'll add some sand to my soil for drainage. Thank u 🙏
Your welcome! Thanks for stopping in! I let the soil dry out almost completely to the bottom before watering again. I try not to let it dry out all the way because the leaves will start to wilt. You'll want to water before that happens. How many times a week you water will all depend on the conditions it's growing in or if it's dormant or actively growing.
I got a citronella & have kept it inside so far - want to propagate - Thank you for info - so far its growing leaps & bounds under grow lights. Do you ever boil a few leaves to make spray
I've never boiled them to make a spray but I'm sure you could 😊 Sounds like a good experiment. I want to learn how to start extracting the oils from different plants and herbs. I think that'll be so fun!
@StaceyHerewegrowagain the reel I saw says boil 1 cup water, shut burner off & add 4-5 leaves, & put lid on for 2 hours. Then 1.1 of citronella liquid with witch hazel or alcohol. I haven't tried yet but plan to today
I'm late to the party but I want it to thank you. Last year I bought my first citronella plants and blue so ginormous. As it began to get cold I brought it inside the house. It survived up until 2 months ago would you believe it I forgot to water it for a few weeks and then it died. It won't happen this year!
I usually cover them if temps drop below 50°f.. Then uncover them when it warms back up during the day.. I live in Florida so we don't get too much cold weather luckily. I do notice they get socked a little bit if they're exposed to too much cold.
I wonder what I’m doing wrong. I’m usually really good at propitiating plants like geraniums, but every time I try to propagate my citronella it does after a day.
Just make sure you try and grab a small side shoot like I rooted. They work a lot better than rootting the bigger stems. Both times were a success for me. I can do an update soon on how I care for them. Thank you so much for stopping by!
My citronella plants (all3) are developing curly leaf disease-almost like tomatoes do . Should I remove damaged leaves. ? Too much sun? Too much water? 🤷♀️
Hi The Animal Papa! It's so great to see you! I've been pretty busy but I'm doing great, thank you so much for asking! I hope your doing good as well and I hope you have an amazing day!
I don't have any extra to spare at the moment, but I'm hoping to make some available in the near future. Along with other varieties of plants succulents cacti etc.
Its a tropical plant. It likes a lot of humidity, a lot of water and a lot of heat. Im not sure what happened to her plant there, but shes only assuming it was because of rain. Which would be too much water. The stem on the big plant died off because she took a cutting from the center of the branch. Plants sprout new growth from the nodes (where leaves grow from), so by cutting in the middle between them, the plant didnt need it anymore and let it die... basically. Cuttings will root best from the nodes, but will still sprout roots from center of the stem too. Though, she probably just had entirely too much water in the soil for the plant to take root and too much water will rot things as well, so a twofer on that one. Keep your cuttings moist/damp... but not soaked. Other than that, i water my big potted citronella plant everyday till water consistantly flows out of the bottom. Of course it sits in direct sun all day long too which will dry it out. Water in the evening/night and dont water again till the next and it should be fine. If it rains, skip watering that day(s).
Watering everyday can cause rot if the soil is staying constantly soaked all the time. It needs to be able to dry a bit between waterings so the roots can breathe. They don't like bone dry soil so you'll have to find a watering schedule that fits your plants needs depending on the size pot it's in, what location it's growing in, what soil is it in etc..
yes it can! We use to have a plant in our backyard and the number of mosquitos that summer dropped. Sometimes you may have to give the leaves a little rub to get the smell going but overall just having the plant should repel mosquitos
You have to shake them to get a good release of scent; this also toughens up the plant. Just having them out in the yard doesn’t repel mosquitoes unless the wind is blowing. I have been growing and propagating citronella plants for years. I over winter in garage w/grow lights and keep the temperature at 50 degrees. One thing she didn’t mention is when your soil is at steady warm temps they propagate better. Last year I got at least 30 off 1 plant. I placed them all under my trees my temps were 80-90 I didn’t want them to get scorched.
Bruise them and lay them on and under the lower leaves of young cabbage, broccoli, that uncoolwhitebroccoli stuff, and put your leaves around the base of the plant, other than moths, most other things crawl up the stem to eat!
You can use an organic fertilizer, I use the Nature's safe granual which is a 8-3-5 and I also use the 5-6-6, depending on what my plant needs at that time. Or you can go with a chemical fertilizer something like a 7-9-5.. or anything with equal parts N-P-K (the N-P-K means the amount of Nitrogen Phosphorous and Potassium in the fertilizer)..
For watering, I just let the soil dry out completely to the bottom.. They are pretty prone to rot, so I just water all the way through when it's time and let it dry out fully before watering again. If you notice the leaves are drying up quite a bit, it could mean that it's getting too much sun or the soil is staying too dry in between the waterings. Investing in a moisture meter really helps if your unsure about when to water.
I use a 1liter coke\drink bottle, with a roofing nail hole in the lid. This way I don't over water. Sun heats up water and forces water out. Just check on it once a week or so. Judge based on heat and direct sunlight, I found that citronella prefers shad.
It likes to stay moist, but not soaking wet. Likes well draining soil so the roots can breathe. I don't let the soil stay dry in-between the waterings, but I like to let it dry out almost completely before watering again. The amount of waterings per week and how long your soil takes to dry out, all depends on your climate, how much sun it's getting, type of soil your using, type of pot your using, the amount of sun, air its getting, is it indoors or outside etc.. all come into play when determining when to water. That's something everyone has to figure out for themselves.. a lot of things come into play when determining when to water. I'd recommend a moisture meter if your not sure when to water. It'll give you a guide on how wet or dry your soil is so you can avoid overwatering. These are prone to rot if left too wet for too long or if planted in a soggy heavy soil. Hope that helps you better to understand. I like to help everyone no matter where you live. All you have to do is ask if I don't include it in the video. Thanks for stopping in!
What kind of soil do you use?
Any kind of quick draining potting soil used for container gardening
Thanks Stacey! Video what very helpful!!
Glad I could help!
Did they take root outdoors? Is your climate good? What state are you in?
Yes they take root pretty well outdoors. I'm in Central Florida and we get a lot of humidity here.
I got a tiny little citronella in March. This baby has grown OUT and then not much up…well, about 4 foot and about 6 foot wide. Not exaggerating! I am so happy to have found you! Thank you so much! :-)

I bet lol. The mosquitoes are terrible where I live too. They will carry you away at night. Huge too! Lol
I am sooo glad i found you before i pot this plant! I had no idea they get so big 😮
Yes lol. They do grow pretty tall 😊
I'm so glad I found you!
I'm happy to help 😊

Do they need to come in cold winter?

Great video!! Is it better to rub the leaf on you or the juice?
I rub both on just to be double protected lol. Either is ok and works for me😊
i have 2.. im going to try this... i hope it works

I don't have any extra to spare at the moment, but I'm hoping to make some available in the near future. Along with other varieties of plants succulents cacti etc.
@@StaceyHerewegrowagain , thank you Stacey
@@jimmymisle910 your very welcome! Just for your knowledge, the citronella is really called a scented geranium 😊
Hey I like that very interesting
Thank you🌸
me too
Can I keep it in the house?
I don't see why not, as long as it has the right amount of lighting. I've just never grown it indoors before
Hello, i have a question...does citronella rot with too much rain? Thanks in advance

Mine is dying idk what happened. Do i need to water it everyday?
I water when the soil is almost completely dry, but I don't let it dry out all the way through.

My citronella is spindly... so it doesn't stand up???
You can try to hold it in place with a stake
How do you eat that in a salad?
No info on watering? Everyone doesnt live in florida 😢
