What is the Whole30 diet?

  • Whole30 is a paleo-inspired elimination diet framed as a nutrition reset. Subscribe at / nourishable .
The Whole30 diet eliminates all grains, legumes, dairy, alcohol, added sugars and seed oils for 30 days, then food groups are reintroduced to try and identify individual food sensitivities. After the 30 days, individuals are encouraged to eat Whole30-ish for the rest of their lives, and go through another round of strict Whole30 if they feel they need another nutritional reset. There haven’t been any direct studies on Whole30 outside of company surveys, so the best we can do is compare it to paleo diet studies and other literature on the sustainability of diet and lifestyle programs. There are characteristics of Whole30 that I support, but also characteristics that I don’t support. I support the elimination of added sugars, consumption of a variety of fruits and vegetables, focus on healthy monounsaturated fats, recommendations for mindful eating and emphasis on home cooking. This diet is not effective for identifying gluten sensitivity, I worry that there would be overconsumption of saturated fat and feel that whole grains and legumes would be forever demonized. My biggest questions are regarding the effectiveness of this diet to identify food sensitivities and the strict month-long nature that I think will contribute to a yoyo in health. Overall, the changes that last are the changes that matter.

Seed oils the most processed food that no one talks about. Olive, coconut or avocado oil all the way

The fact you shed a positive light on canola oil shows you’re part of the American diet association. Smh

Current dietary guidelines are wrong! Seed oils are crap! Saturated fat is fine for us to consume!

I am not alergic to gluten but I can not eat wheat, white and brown rice, oatmeal and quinoa. I am allergic to them. Not even eggs and red meat. This diet sounds Really good to me. Very clean and healthy. No canola, soy, sunflower, corn oils. Yes to coconut, olive oil, avocado

soy and canola oil~ seed oils!!! barf 🤦‍♀ Been doing whole30 for a year never felt better and never going back ~ can eat piles of food. Have lost 26lbs and never gain any weight~even if I eat a ton. I eat no processed food including processed oil... not only did I lose my fluffy weight but I have zero pain. I was developing sciatica and carpal tunnel and had a lot of aches and pains = all gone. I am never going back. I look at processed food as poison.

I disagree with going to a nutritionist and a gastrointestinal doctor about food sensitivities. I went to both for my issues and they never helped. I went to a naturopathic doctor and he helped a lot. I had a colonoscopy, celiac blood test, and plenty of other tests. The only thing that I found is an elimination diet of certain foods. I found out that I absolutely can not have any gluten at all. It causes neurological issues (like cloudy thinking, weird sensations all over my skin, pins and needles, randomly having portions of my face or limbs going numb, I did have loads of testing for that too with a neurologist) It also causes skin issues (psoriasis, other rashes, blisters in my skin, itchiness and boils) it caused migraines, nausea, dizziness, cracking ears, swollen eyes, swollen glands, nasal congestion and I felt like I had a cold. These symptoms would last up to several weeks. It took gluten out of my diet and it all went away slowly. My brother made a healthy loaf of bread for me and I tried it for the first time is 6 months and I cannot tell you how bad I felt for days after. I was convinced at some points that I had something Major wrong with me, now I have my life back. Even just a little cross contamination can screw with me. I can't even share my butter with gluten eaters. Dairy free butter that is, dairy does other things to me. Yes, my life is awesome!
Point is... Doctors don't always have the answers. Yes go to them but don't take their words as if God was speaking to you. Think for yourself, do your own Research, get multiple opinions from different specialist including naturopathic and homeopathic doctors, and test things out for yourself. I did that method for myself and my daughter who was diagnosed with crippling idiopathic juvenile arthritis and she lives a life free from it due to the elimination diet.
As far as this diet is concerned, I would take out soy, eggs, nuts, grains except rice and gluten free oats, and dairy, processed sugars and foods. I don't agree with all grains, and still eating eggs. Also having honey or healthy home baked goods isn't a bad thing either especially if you want to make it a sustainable diet. Eggs was the very thing that was causing my daughters arthritis. Also 30 days is great and all but it can take up 6 weeks for you to stop symptoms from any sensitivity. A good thing with elimination diets is that you are building up your gut and immune system so you don't get sick. We hardly ever get sick, and when we do it's not nearly as severe as everyone else around us.
    Good luck!

She is dead wrong on saturated fats. Saturated fats actually protect your heart and help you lose weight. Trans fats in processed foods are to be avoided.

She is using the Seven Country Study performed by Doctor Ansel Keys. Some old nutrition textbooks still refer to it. Keys cherry picked the data to get the results he wanted. The truth came out years ago but seed oil companies still use the data to sell their product.

    • @AskMiko
      @AskMiko 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Promoted it or mentioned it? Promoting it would imply she shared which one to buy, had links in the description to buy it and reference a particular brand throughout the video as the canola brand of choice. She did none of this but did mention the oil as a comparison along with other oils.

Oh just run in and see a Gastroenterologist cuz its so easy 🤦‍♀️. These days, the specialized doctors won't see you without a referral and u can't get a referral unless they find something wrong. If your bloodwork is "normal" they will refuse to see you, even if your symptoms warrant a visit to a specialist. It's a ridiculous vicious circle and the patients are suffering.

Whole30 sounds like a fashion statement. The more videos I watch the more I LMAO about it. 30 days of abstinence from some food to then gradually injecting it back to see how you react sounds VERY subjective. There is NO peer reviewed papers so no control group, no population, no blood test, no anything quantifiable nor measurable nor duplicable... in other words this is very random and based on "how you feel?".
Sure if you eat differently, regardless of good or bad, you will find differences in energy level, how fat you get, how much weight you lose, etc... what a shocker. I liked that she had CONS and PROS. While some disagree with the whole of saturated or trans fats, etc... the one thing I was thinking of which she mentioned at the end is common sense; investing 30 days into a system to gradually reinject something you eliminate is not going to yield conclusive results.
The body takes about 18 days to start getting used to any change in metabolism, diet, exercise... so 30 days will not make anything a substantial norm.
