Throughout RuneScape's history, there have been a number of times where players came together in protest to show they are not happy with an update. Sometimes Jagex listens to the community and sometimes they don't. In this video, part two of the riots mini-series, we cover the last 4 classic riots.

Jagex releases controversial update

I would say 40k players lost would be an understatement. They lost a lot more than 40k, especially as time went on. I eventually quit solely because of these terrible updates. The amount of people that were on daily were really shooken up.
I lasted all the way until 2017. In 2017, basically nothing happened. Menaphos was the main highlight of that year, and it was total shit when it was released. Then there was nothing significant, so I was done. I remember checking the main page every few days, only to be disappointed to see yet another treasure hunter update.
The wheel of fortune did it for me..
All thr hard work i put in for almost a decade. And now ppl could just buy the Exp lamps and become 99 runecraft overnight without doing anything... At that point i didnt care anymore. Never played OSRS either. The nogstalica was there but the graphics suck tbf. There are alot of other gamers that are better nowadays... sad tho...
I have no idea what the actual number is, but in 2008, I read somewhere that it was 60,000 people that quit
There's also the knock on from the emptier world's. Back then I didn't care for PKing or trading, but when the game became emptier and emptier it became boring & lonely to play & I eventually left too. These updates were poison that trickled down
I used to spent hours just using RS as a chatroom tbh. I stopped playing due the decrease and I didn’t even know the riots happened
EOC was the turning point for me, and I quit only to come back once 07 scape was created
I did the same! Played 01-eoc came back 2018 ish.
I wasn't happy about EoC but I played it for awhile. In all honesty, I was disappointed OSRS came out and not a mid 2008 version of the game (with HD graphics, resizeable, G.E., etc). Eventually we got G.E. and resizeable and that won me over from RS3 and now that HDOS is out its even better... Sadly I don't have time to play anymore lol.
TLDR; wish they released a mid-2008 version of the game but with wildy and free trade :(
@@aaronsvoboda5897 wildy free trade and honestly I loves getting 100 dungeoneering. I had a blast saving up for chaotics and solving puzzles. Some of my fondest memories were playing with a group of friends on Skype solving puzzles and rooms together then helping each other get 99,100, some 120

Biggest riot was when they took all of everyones items from rs classic and put it on rs2 beta resulting in every person online rioting with no gear on lol

They should have just been honest about the stolen credit cards being the reason for wilderness removal, would have gotten a lot less hate.
I think we were all too young back then to care about how merchant processors work

I remember going to school (6th grade) and my friend who was a serial liar had told me the wildy got removed that morning. I just thought he was lying but when I got home I was so disappointed. I wasn’t very good In hindsight, almost nobody was, but it was so much fun to just noob f2p pures and meet people in the wild and form alliances and teams. For me, It was what made RuneScape RuneScape. I also remember attending the riots in w66. I really have to believe to this day that there could’ve been some sort of alternative back then. We all witnessed some of our closest rs friends hop off for the last time, never to be seen in nearly 15 years. I wish I could go back to early 2007.
Pking back then was the best cuz even if you werent that good you still dominated if you had a pure but now you cant even compete without one cuz everyone is a pure and a pro at pking now so its hard to even get into. I remember having almost 100 rune 2hs and over 150 rune scims from pking on my f2p pure loll
I do miss those days of playing RuneScape every day for 16 hours. It's interesting how we played so much, but never got anything done, lol. Nowadays, I have more shit done on my OSRS account than I ever did back in the day. I guess you just get older and learn haha
I think bonds would have taken away a lot of the gold farmers market.

A video on the older history a time when I was still playing rune scape as a young 18-20 something I REMEMBER THESE RIOTS STILL. i thought at the time they would just be dead to time stories if you were there you knew and if not it just sounded like a crazy story. awesome vid

I was a kid around 2007 or so when they removed free trade and I completely lost my shit. I was there in a pink skirt at Falador. The best part of RuneScape to me is that the players themselves wrote a lot of the 'lore' and history of the game. People like Durial 321 created the 'Falador Massacre' which has it's own Wikipedia page (not the RS wiki, real Wikipedia). Such a nostalgic game with many memorable moments :)
Yup Durial sacrificed all his hard work and gains so that he could go down in history as the most infamous PKer to ever play Runescape. A true legend

Swiftswitch was such an epic 3th party client. I remember we could make our own playlist for music. Good old times.

Too bad the game sucks... I can say this because I throughly played it. It's a step backwards in development, oversimplified, weak combat system, almost no character animations, the font is comic-sans. The entire selling piont of the game is it's a JRPG set in world that looks like one of those 3D puzzles with shiny glitter everywhere... It's a blantant cash grab.
When they removed free trade and pking was the day runescape spell was broken on me. I was addicted to that game up until that point. Quit without hesitation and only came back when osrs was implemented but then they ruined that with shitty updates again

So crazy to think about this stuff when I was an active player then at the time too. The pk removal and free trade really sucked. Specifically the free trade. Kinda wish Jagex was just honest about it all instead of trying to play it off. Great video as always man!

I am almost certain I was in one of those PK riot clips. I vividly remember how angry my friends and I were in high school after that update. Dark times for RuneScape for sure.
I remember protesting the Pking changes haha, but I stuck it out a little my gameplay dropped significantly and I would rarely play. But after EOC I was done and the trade restrictions were extremely whack
I remember having full range void, a d bow, and paying like 2k for a veng during that bounty hunter update. Lol I would peek in , spec and step out outta fear of losing my void .. ahhh I miss those moments

I loved swift switch. I remember it was the first client to incorporate the high scores into. So I’d woodcut and look up everybody’s stats.

I remember the pay to Pk and free trade riot, I was only f2p at the time but I would log for hours just to get a follow train and protest publically. In fact it might be the music but I feel angry towards jagex watching this video, almost like I was still there

I was such a huge fan of the game at that time. Attended every riot.. when they took away old school and the wild I couldn’t believe it. Never felt such disappointment in my life. I’m glad they lost 40k players. They deserved it

I was a pink skirt in varrock during the free trade riots, I signed off and didn't come back till osrs was launched.
Runescape is a game where the devs have no understanding of what the community wants.

I read some article, or maybe it was on the RS wikipedia page, Jagex saying they actually didn't lose almost any players for very long after the wildy/trade removal update... thats complete BS,, almost everybody quit. I did too for quite some time. Back then, pking was huge and everybody did it

I remember when they removed free trade and wildy in December 2007. All of a sudden I went from playing all day to having nothing to do, it was a very boring christmas 😂

Jagex should not have give a s* about credit card payments. The customer would use any other way to pay for membership. Even back then PayPerSMS or per Phone and things like Paysafecard were possible...
I would guess that credit card was probably a preferred payment method for them. It probably took less of a fee and it has the advantage of being consistent, in that it will just come out automatically unless you cancel the transaction. I'm sure if they would have decided it was an insignificant payment method that they would have just let the companies go. PKing and free trade are an integral part of any online multiplayer game; to remove them is always obviously going to lead to a massive deterioration in quality of gameplay. You don't exactly need to be an expert in RS to deduce that. For that reason, I don't think Jagex made the decision lightly, and I'm sure there must have been a serious financial implication from losing credit card revenue that forced them to cut it all out.

lol cmon the climbing boots was an inside job. This very same thing happened in OSRS with zul'andra teleports. they went from 100 gp to 20k+ over night when they changed the drop amount and it didn't even happen once, they changed the drop amount like 3 times. I would know I made like 300m off them.
Some people have faster internet than others therefor it should take at least 8 minutes minimum to switch worlds. Just to be safe. Rule 7 and all

There's nothing we want back tho. The duel arena's friendly competition aspect has already been replaced by the clan wars free-for-all portal at the ferox enclave.

Jagex doesn't give a shit about what we think about 3rd party clients (unless you're a stememer)
They said you shouldn't have plugins that allow you to potentially avoid taking damage in content, blast mine plug in still does this and the ability to see the attack ranges of NPCs are two of the most egregious contradictions that come to mind.
Then again this is also a company that thinks a Bond isn't a MTX....so they've already made it perfectly clear they've got little to no integrity.

The Climbing Boot update was one of the most profoundly idiotic things Jagex has ever pulled. There's a much more obvious, and much simpler, solution, that wouldn't have gone over nearly as bad: Nerf the fucking boots.

Hypothesis: Runescape operates similarly to real life. When there are riots, we see riots to follow. Perhaps massive botting is a sign of the future of automation?

I never cared too much about the changes. I wasn't a PKer and free trade removal got rid of all the noob beggars and scammers. It was still a shitty decision though.
Plus the bounty hunter crater was legit fun

A lot of these issues stem from bots. If they actually invested in getting rid of bots rather than put bandage solutions in the game that impact real players, than the game would be much better.
