I really like your tutorials, straight forward no phaffing and informative. Glad I found Soaping 101. It's my advice and guidance resource as a new Soap Maker. Many thanks and don't stop teaching/sharing.
Absolutely, beets are a wonderful addition to your soap. However, the red fades to a light yellow in cold process soap. But when added to hot process or rebatched soap you will find the red color holds better.
Hi Alisha, this isn't Catherine, but I'll add my two cents. Make sure your mica is stable in high ph - or cold process. I made the mistake of trying a mica in my very first batch thinking they were all the same. The soap turned out okay, but my purple just turned to a light gray. I also had a simliar issue with olive oil - mine was VERY yellow and made my soap difficult to color. I switched to the cheapest olive oil I could find. It was easier to color, less expensive and worked just as well !!
The color of the olive oil should not have too much of an impact when mixed wth the micas. However, I am just generalizing here because I do not know your oil percentages. Green olive oil is usually the oil produced by the first pressing of the olives, extra-virgin. I am partial to Pomace olive oil which is the oil that is extracted from the pulp after the first press. It has the highest percentage of unsaponifiables. Hope this helps :)
Ohh!! Liquid soap please!! I tried it once. Had 6 pounds of foamy soap all over my stove. After about 2 hours I had a super clean stove mind you... but I need to learn to make this properly!
Question about the Dandelion soap - I've heard that using botanicals can cause your soap to turn brown. Did the dandelion soap eventually brown or did it keep it's green color? Also, aren't you afraid of chemicals contaminating your soap by picking "weeds" that people often spray with chemicals to kill them?
I think Phil must be still riding around on a tram in Manchester - where is he??? I think cream soap is the winner!!! Thanks for another fabulous learning video, xx Linda
Cream soap!!! I just bought Catherine Failors book and, I am still not confident enough to make a batch. My main problem is trying to formulate a recipe. Just having a issue with which cream soap lye calc is the best to use. I still have a lot more research to do though, but it would be nice to watch a tutorial on some one breaking down the steps and making it. I do much better with visuals than just reading it from a book. Although I do love Catherine's book.
I agree, Phil's soap is to die for. In his videos he comes across as a really nice caring guy, even Karen (Edens Secrets) says he's a good 'looker afterer' but you girls are making me wonder. I'm going to have to ask you girls to please watch my back in class - just until I get the jist of this guy! I don't think it will be too long until Teach gives us all DETENTION!!! Rene x
I have never used crayons as a soap colorant. They contain paraffin which may prove harmful to the skin. I prefer using crayons with my coloring books :)
I'm so greatful for this class. I really want to see liquid soap making!!! On second thought I want to see Cream Soap making. Oh Goodness I can't choose. Please do them back to back I don't care which comes first.
Are the oxides you use special? I ask this because as a potter I have access to a great number of different oxides that are used in glazes. Is there a difference in these oxides and the ones that you use?
How funny is that Phil, Louise and I will be taking the tram on Thursday too. Maybe we can all meet up and ride together, and you get pushed out again? See you Thursday.
Reminds me of when I was in hairdressing school and we were learning our colors/chemical procedures....Some of the things you teach here are somewhat similar to what we were taught during clinical. Funny but very true : Thanks for a great learning experience. Always enjoyable! ; )
I am brand new to soaping and had a quick question did my first coloring yesterday and found out that I didn't add enough mica! But thats besides the point! LOL What I am wondering is my Olive Oil is super green, does that make a difference in my soaping, when adding colorants? Should I find a more brownish olive oil, or does it really matter?? Trying to use mainly natural or mica colorants!!
What have I got myself into here?? Phil you must admit that you do have a ' bad boy' glint in your eyes (or was that rain) - I think you're the one to watch and more than capable of getting into trouble all by yourself!!!
Debbie, what have I told you about keeping your hands to yourself? Did you not learn a thing from your trip in front of the principal? To the corner for you....
Hi soaping101. Im a little bit confused about these micas, pigments. I want to buy a set of colors that will work with both cp and m&p soap base. Do you have any suggestions for me to use? I also know that scent can change the color of a base, can you recommend a place where i can buy 1 litres of scents instead of 5ml? :|
Hey Phil ! Teach forgot the 'U" in 'colourant' No real foraging needed here for dandelions. Since weed killers have been banned every lawn is now covered in them.
Louise and I have been sent to the Principles office. We just put on a good cry and he felt sorry for us and let us go. It worked. Teach knows how Phil is, and so far she is letting us fight back. We bring weapons to class. Sure we will watch your back it is our mission to keep an eye on him. He is sneeky so watch him. Detention is not so bad we get to make soap. Problem is Teach gets to keep the soap.
Hey now, Phil is the mean one in class. We got tired of it and started fighting back. He has fancy soap and labels and such, but underneath you can't trust him. Sit in the back and just watch him. He has no shame!!
Rene has a giant fly swatter she is bringing to class Phil, with fly guts on it. You better have plenty of soap at home, fly guts are hard to get off the body.
Loving this video, very informative, no more weed killer for me. show me cream soap please!! I'm new to your class and really trying to be a good girl, but Phil and his gang keep making me laugh so I might get naughty soon! Rene x
Phil + his gang are a very bad influence... run fast! I hear the initiation into the gang is something dreadful like riding an all tram in rainy Manchester :)
Shall I try to raise some funds to bail you out of jail? Yes, we have several church {pick your denomimation and we've got it}. One of the older churches chimes its bells each hour... so pretty. I will try to get it on video but you go first Philly!
Phil, if you bring Teach some soap she might do both. She doesn't like when you get in her briefcase, so maybe you can put your soap in there. Bribe her so she will do both.
I really like your tutorials, straight forward no phaffing and informative.
Glad I found Soaping 101. It's my advice and guidance resource as a new Soap Maker.
Many thanks and don't stop teaching/sharing.
I use spinach powder for my greens and I love it! Going to try spirulina for the first time tomorrow.
Absolutely, beets are a wonderful addition to your soap. However, the red fades to a light yellow in cold process soap. But when added to hot process or rebatched soap you will find the red color holds better.
Yes, some herb will discolor in soap but dandelion does not. I don't use chemical fertilizer on my lawn so mine is free from contaminants.

My vote goes towards cream soap! I would never have thought to dry dandelion leaves to use as a colorant. Great video, CB!
I agree, nature has provided us with a huge array of gorgeous colors. We should use them when we can :)
You're too kind Phil! Teach has warned me off, told me to run and the initiation sounds iffy for the want of a better word. Luv Rene x
I missed this response and commented above, but agree with Catherine's comment on pomace olive oil or non-virgin ...you'll save money too!

Dandelions rank near the top in veggie nutritional value + they are free! Does it get any better? :)
Thank you for doing your experiment with green! I love green.
This was great! I learned a lot and really enjoy your videos. I would like to see cream soap, please!
thanks Catherine, that was very intresting and the results were very nice.
What a great demonstration !!! Thanks ! I vote for cream soap please.
Ohh!! Liquid soap please!! I tried it once. Had 6 pounds of foamy soap all over my stove. After about 2 hours I had a super clean stove mind you... but I need to learn to make this properly!
cream soap, I have made some myself and it is wonderful!
I am always amazed by your videos... Thanks for posting them!
I am so glad you figured out your weapon of choice. Leave the fly guts on it, Phil doesn't like to get dirty. That is why he makes soap, his soap.
Question about the Dandelion soap - I've heard that using botanicals can cause your soap to turn brown. Did the dandelion soap eventually brown or did it keep it's green color? Great video! I vote cream soap I just started making it, but still a newbie at it. Liquid soap is fun too though lol
I would enjoy seeing the cream soap made! Just had to put my 2cents in here!
I think Phil must be still riding around on a tram in Manchester - where is he???
I think cream soap is the winner!!! Thanks for another fabulous learning video, xx Linda
I'd love to see cream soap please. I've only made it once before and it turned out fine but it would be good to see the teacher do it! Thanks, Emma
Thanks Karen!
Hello! Love your videos! Very informative. Just wondering if you would ever consider using beets as a food dye or food dyes in general?
I would like to learn about cream soap but also liquid. I like the back to back lessons idea!
'It is not that I like you, it's just that my piggy bank was getting too full'.... that Bobby had a way with words. Such a charmer :)
Excellent information! I was confused on which of the three to purchase but thanks to you now I have a clearer view on which to go for :-)
Cream soap!!! I just bought Catherine Failors book and, I am still not confident enough to make a batch. My main problem is trying to formulate a recipe. Thank you for this video. Please can we have a video on cream soap even though I would love to see one on liquid soap too!

I can't tell you what I had for lunch today, but I DO remember that episode *sigh* !!
That is one heck of a way to clean your stove top!
I'm so greatful for this class. I really want to see liquid soap making!!! On second thought I want to see Cream Soap making. Oh Goodness I can't choose. Please do them back to back I don't care which comes first.
Cream soap sounds fun!
when you are labeling your soap, how would you describe the dandelion leaves for your colorant?
Are the oxides you use special? I ask this because as a potter I have access to a great number of different oxides that are used in glazes. Is there a difference in these oxides and the ones that you use?
I want to learn cream soap and liquid soap and cannot choose. I like them both.
Thanks for the warning, trouble is I'm so easily led!! Rene x
How funny is that Phil, Louise and I will be taking the tram on Thursday too. Maybe we can all meet up and ride together, and you get pushed out again? See you Thursday.
What do you think of people using Crayons to color their soap? Have you ever done this and how would you recommend one goes about using them?
Is the possibility of the dandelions having been spayed with chemicals a concern?
Hi Teach, yes we did have an outting in the rain, and yes we did push him off the tram. Phil is in a ditch somewhere and that is just how it is.
Well WAKE UP, class is starting :)

I'll bring my giant fly swatter to next class, it's leaves a nasty sting! Thanks for the tip on how to deal with the Principle. Rene x
Now you have made me hungry for ice cream... I'm off to the freezer :)
Liquid soap would be brilliant!!
What have I got myself into here?? Phil you must admit that you do have a ' bad boy' glint in your eyes (or was that rain) - I think you're the one to watch and more than capable of getting into trouble all by yourself!!!
Hi Louise! I was wondering if you ran off + joined the roller derby girls :)
Thanks for watching :)
Debbie, what have I told you about keeping your hands to yourself? Did you not learn a thing from your trip in front of the principal? To the corner for you....
Very interesting, I would like to see cream soap please :)
He may still be drying off from his trip around town :)
Loved this video. Tomorrow morning I will be "weeding" the yard! Liquid soap please.
Get up Phil!! Night class is hard for some, and you had enough beauty sleep.
I scream for cream...soap! Very interesting video...thanks!
Where ever did you get the little scoop you were using?
Thanks for the tip-off but I think we're all in for a bumpy ride! Rene
love your videos.
Anyone knows if Pearl ex can be used for cp or hp soap? Thanks!
Lovely! Thank you very much.
Bloody ace!
Please make a liquid glycerin soap.
I would like both but if I had to choose I would say Cream Soap.

Rene has a giant fly swatter she is bringing to class Phil, with fly guts on it. You better have plenty of soap at home, fly guts are hard to get off the body.
