Randy you are a gem of a man and remind me of my dear departed Dad. God love you. It’s a Double Pitzen knot, and I respect that you continue to call it what the guy that showed it to you called it. Well done sir. Personally I prefer the Trilene knot for a number of reasons. A large percentage of fishing is confidence, so every angler should find the knot(s) that they have confidence in. Live your best life my friends!

I learned the Double Pitzen knot from Shaw Grigsby a few years back after breaking off several good fish on the hook set! Like anything else that’s new, this knot takes practice to learn and get proficient with. I can’t remember the last time I lost a fish on the hook set since I made it switch.

I've been using this knot for a while now, and it is the best knot ever. I learned how to tie it from a video you aired a while back. I simply call it the A-Mart knot, and it's absolutely the best knot out there for fluorocarbon line.

I started using this knot 3-4 years ago from watching Deny Brauer tie it...this knot is amazingly strong & easy to tie! I have a hard hookset and kept breaking my palomar knot, so this saved me alot of headaches! Thanks!

It’s double Pitzen knot. Absolutely love it. Never failed for years for me
Double Uni knot is similar to this and is an improvement of this , because it doesn’t require the hook to be weighted to tie it.

  • @ShaneJMcNair
    @ShaneJMcNair ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yes, that is a very good knot for Florocarbon since it doesn't cut into itself. I tie a similar knot, the San Diego Jam, which is a modified Uniknot... use a Palomar knot for everything else.

This right here is the difference between teaching something, and putting on a clinic of your abilities (which is an all-out, f@#king epidemic on TH-cam). How many cameras you have, and their angle is pointless if the person doesn't know how to relay information. Some of these guys are genuine guys who just don't have a clue as to how their video is coming across, because they have an over-head camera setup. And, that's all you need to call yourself a "teacher" by today's standards. Randy did this so well, I didn't even need the sound on my PC. Thanks for sharing this Randy!

I've had great success with 8 pound flouro, 12lb, 20lb but in the past week I've had my 10lb seaguar blue label leader break at the hookset 3 times. Until this recent run it had literally never happened to me. It's tied to 10lb braid with a 7 ft medium moderate. So I've some to the conclusion it has to be the knot. Perfect timing Randy I'm gonna give this thing a try.

Been tying the same knot for over a decade now(don’t know the real name). Just saw a really detailed video a guy did comparing it to others, very well done and confirmed my feelings. Best of all it’s super easy, I believe it’s the same knot you showed. My point being that anything over 3 wraps doesn’t help, and actually makes it’s too big. I also pull on both sides of the tag end and re-pull on the main line and tag before I cut. Works great on co poly, but not for braid.

Thanks fot the great video! I've been using braid only for years and the palamore has been my goto knot. This year I decided to try using floro on a one of my rods as well as using it as a leader line. I had watched several videos on how to tie florocarbon and your video made it easy for me to understand and successfully tie the knot. One reel spooled up with the FC as well as making a couple of quick change lures/hooks, on premade leaders. Keep up the great videos!

That is the exact same knot I tie on my lures. Strong is an understatement. I was fishing from the bank and got my Chatterbait hung up. I had 15lb fluorocarbon spooled on my reel. I couldn’t get my Chatterbait free so I decided to tighten the drag and start walking backwards. Finally, “something” came loose and it wasn’t my Chatterbait and the line didn’t break either. It was the wire clip that I tied this knot to. It got bent straight and the knot held fast!! I’m loving this knot. Gotta order another Chatterbait to replace my lost one though. 😁

Same here. 30 years. In fact I’ll bet 95% of all Bass fishermen tie the ICK. The only ones who don’t are the weekend warriors with the $600 setups because it’s not “sophisticated” enough for them. 😂

@@trapin68 my fishing partner is 74, been fishing since he was a kid, but he doesn’t use the clinch. Not sure what it is, but somebody else showed it to him a few years ago. Lot more complicated than a clinch. I’ll never change. Why start a new knot that’s no better, and requires cutting off a foot of tag?

    • @givemeabreakdoc
      @givemeabreakdoc ปีที่แล้ว

@@vstorm1279 well, I’ve caught lots of 5-6’s out of grass, wood, and never lost one, unless he throws the hook. All these different knots are a waste of time. Plus, these guys are having to cut off a foot of tag end. I don’t have a tag end to cut with the clinch.

Every knot tied right will work. I've done testing in a lab with tensile and friction testing. The palomar is as strong as any out there. It's all about how you tie it and if the loops lay flat along the main line and the eye. If it's tied correctly....it will not fail any more than any other knot.

I've had no need to learn any other knots for floro because it works so well. Use it on everything from my big swimbaits to finness & light line. I can tie it without
looking in a few seconds. Quick & super strong. If Aaron Martens called it a double unit then that's more than good enough for me!

Weed Collector Knot. I don’t tie this knot as the orientation of each of the 3 tag ends causes these tags to collect weeds during the lure retrieve. Knot strength doesn’t matter if there are no fish biting a lure covered in weeds. I do prefer a knot where the line is doubled through the hook eye but which has a single tag pointing away from the rod tip and toward the lure. Matt Stefan describes this preferred knot in one of his videos. Thanks, Randy.

I started tying this knot with all of my flouro last year after breaking off numerous times on hook sets as well...haven't broke on a hook set since. Great knot, and easy. It does use a bit more line with the three tag ends which makes me go through more leader though but I guess that's the price to pay for landing more fish.

You are right, this is not a double uni, double uni is to connect leader to main line. This is a double pitzen knot. I do use this sometimes. However, the Palomar knot is good for fluro if you make sure your line do not cross through the eyelet and the loop that goes over the bait/hook is flipped up. Once you do this, the line will not cut into itself. Great video though.

  • @comfortablynumb9342

I've always thought that a double uni knot is for tying line to line. So I'd call that knot you tied the doubled uni. But like you said, the name doesn't matter.
I only ever bought one spool of fluoro leader line. Hated it. I use mono to make leaders. The Salt Strong guys did a few tests and mono is more abrasion resistant.

Double Pitzen but like you said, call it what you want. If you feed the line through the loop at the eye, then the loop on top, you have a Double San Diego Jam, a knot that has a very, very strong breaking point.

I'll have to try that knot out on my String King mini spinnerbait. I lost a big one this past week on it when i set the hook using a Palomar knot on 6# copolymer line. I moved up to 14# flouro thinking it was the 6# being too light or the copolymer being not as good but it's possible it was the knot all though i think it's possible it was a turtle since the knot was pretty clean and didn't have a curly tail.

If you're using braid to fluorocarbon, this knot uses a lot of line from your leader.

What about the single uni? Used it for years now, and I have literally pulled my bass boat, as in pulled myself over to get a snag off. The single uni seems easier to tie and very very tough.

That is the double pitzen knot. And if time is a factor, I'll tie the single pitzen, wrapping it 7 times instead of 4. Both knots are incredible for fluorocarbon. I only use the palomar for braid.

It works great for mono too, I mostly use straight floro or mono. it's the knot I use 99.99% of time, except on drop shots.

This knot is called the double Pitzen knot. It’s very strong, but the double San Diego Jam knot (a very similar knot) tests a little stronger. Both are also closely related to the Berkley Braid knot. I have tutorials for all 3 on my channel 🙂

I use the Palomar knot most times and, the only time it has broken off is when I get caught on structure and I break the line off. I've never broken off a hook in a fish's mouth and gotten back just the line.

I don’t get why people are shying away from a Palomar. Just yesterday, I hung a wobble-head on brand new 14 lb Sunline Sniper. I not only couldn’t break it, I DRAGGED my ANCHORED kayak (with a 15 lb homemade heavy current anchor), after having to wrap the line around my paddle four times because I was pulling so hard, it began cutting into my palm!! I was putting an easy 50 lbs of force on that line and knot, if not more. I’m in a Hobie PA 12 kayak too, by the way. I finally had to get over the bait amd drop a plug knocker down. After 40+ years of tying this knot, I have had TWO failures, and I fish 4 days a week, EVERY WEEK. You guys can go for the hype, (from the man who supposedly hates hype most), I’ll keep on with the Polumar for direct lure tying with floro.

This knot is superior to the palomar. It’s not hype.

.. Most Palomer Knots fail when the line is not lubricated when tightening ,, the line "burns" and looses much of it's strength ... and need to be sure doubled line does not cross or lay over the cut on the hook eye .. will break on hookset ...

I've never had an Improved Clinch knot fail on fluro, but the line must be well moistened during the knot tying procedure.

Hey Randy I know you said not to get hung up on the name but I just had to jump in with the person who invented that knot. Jimmy Houston was the inventor of the knot and the name of coarse is the Jimmy Houston Knot. Just thought you might appreciate the origin and the name.
