I think giving Greenpath only a 2/10 for first impressions is -a trash opinion, it's clearly the be- pretty harsh. The same way you said that Dirtmouth teaches the player that there's characters rather than just enemies, Greenpath shows that there's more than just dingy caverns and a dreary town. The lush greenery is such a stark contrast to everything seen up until that point, that first entering that area was a real turning point in how excited I was to uncover the rest of the game.

Absolutely agree. I almost thought about stopping the video after seeing greenpath rated the worst, as it was pretty difficult to take it seriously. Even by the end I was still thinking "how is greenpath the worst?"
Many players call it the region that hooks people to the game. Most often, those who drop Hollow Knight haven't reached Green Path, and those who are still unsure of the game up to that point will claim that they "got it" upon reaching that area

I really didn’t think anyone else liked ancient basin that much. I honestly find it to be the most relaxing area in the game. It’s dark and it’s quiet. All the enemies in the main area are just simple little bugs that don’t even have any thoughts. And I think it’s a better execution of the “area hidden beneath the city” than Royal Waterways.

I think Greenpath’s sole purpose is to show that the game isn’t just about dark blue caves. With that said, Queen’s Garden is a lot more fun and challenging to romp through.

  • @slowfie

I have to say Royal Waterways is my favourite. The realisation that 'of course this giant city has a huge sewer system', the fact a dung beetle is a boss is so perfect and just exploring all those tunnels was so cool. (it also has the prettiest bench background of the game too)

I was expecting City of Tears to be first when you got to the top 5. The other usual contenders (Greenpath, Crystal Peak and The Hive) were all gone. Honestly, I was shocked. You're the first person I've ever seen put it first. IMO City of Tears is the best. I love the lore relevance, the song (and how it's the only location whose theme actually has lore relevance), how it shows a societal hierarchy, the statue, the geographical location, the fact that Blue Lake is slowly leaking into it(which makes sense actually given how old the caverns are supposed to be), the npcs you come across are fun and the enemies are imo some of the funnest to fight bc they're not annoying or super challenging but also not stupidly easy. And when I first entered it I was kind of creeped out at first but then hearing the song start playing I immediately felt a sense of calmness and safety. And when you get to that bench near the window and you look out and can see part of the city for the first time, omg it was amazing. You could see the rain and stuff. (also now that we're talking about the buildings, going back to the music, this is the only location(that I'm aware of) to also have dynamic music, in that there's a quieter, calmer theme with a smaller instrumentation for when you're inside, and when you're outside the full song and instrumentation come in and it's BEAUTIFUL.) The tonal shift when leaving the first building for the first time and seeing the statue of the hollow knight and the background with all the buildings and the rain is just so beautiful. I actually almost cried(I'm not joking lmao, no video game has ever done that to me with just aesthetics). And then the cutscene with Hornet plays and she basically tells you how to get the main ending(but in the most convoluted way possible) was really cool. And then you come back later in the game and are able to play through the other half of the city, it's just amazing. I don't think any area comes close to City of Tears, and I really hope that Silksong will manage to top it with one of its areas but at the same time, City of Tears is just so good I don't want it to be topped (and part of me also just thinks its perfect, and literally cant be topped).

@@LemonDuck88 oh it’s fine haha 😂. The vid was rlly fun and I can agree with/understand a lot of your placements. It’s also honestly really refreshing to see a unique opinion lol. Ancient Basin is usually at the bottom (or close to the bottom) of lists. I think it’s rlly misunderstood. A lot of ppl say it’s not immersive or that it doesn’t have as much aesthetic or atmosphere as the other areas but that’s kinda literally the point lol (it’s full of void. Void/emptiness is the aesthetic). Also similar to CoT, the enemies are slightly challenging but not annoying, and in terms of lore relevance, it’s the most important area in the game lol.

You did so much right here, I love how organized it all is. Smallest of critiques is that occasionally you would mention something (e.i. Mantis Lords) and the editing would make it feel like it was going to be a whole section of the video then it's then turned away for your next talking point. No issue with what you said, I guess a little bit with the editing which really isn't an issue after like 5 seconds of thinking about it haha.

    • @jakalder
      @jakalder ปีที่แล้ว +9

A problem with the video I quickly noticed was how artificial the ranking felt. The total points went up by 1 each time and it felt really unnatural. It felt like he was purposely fudging the numbers to get that clean ascent so that there was no ties but that would be unfair to the areas that got lower placements do to this artificial counting. If he was going to do this then it would have been better to not show the scoring at all and just do the placements as when I noticed it, it made me lose some enjoyment from the rest of the video. But I have no proof that is what he actually did but it feels all too coincidental.

Gotta agree with the fog canyon take. It felt so bleak and out of place to go from either a fungal wasteland or the equivalent of a rainforest, directly into an area that could pass for an underwater level.
I didn't even know there was more to the biome than those two rooms between greenpath and queen's station until I had to kill monomon.

Great list. I usually strongly dislike the horror genre, but Deepnest is by far my favorite. The way the world goes from bugs that are cute, to bugs that are actually like bugs (sly, parasitic, and cunning) was so cool. It really reminds you what bugs are and makes so much sense given the lore and history surrounding the area.

Great ranking! Ancient Basin is also my favorite, though White Palace is a close second. A lot of the lore went flying over my head my first blind playthrough, but finding the Broken Vessel (and then bashing my unprepared head against Lost Kin) helped me piece together a lot that I was missing. The visual communication of "looks like you -> is called vessel -> is broken from bulging infection" is great while still prompting more questions. The Abyss is phenomenal, between the hollow sound of steps on the empty masks (?) and a lighthouse so vastly underground, looking over a murky lake. Then the whole sequence with the void heart, coming back out and realizing the Siblings and your own shade no longer attack you... *chefs kiss*
Some of my other favorite areas are the sub-areas that are just one or two screens, like the Stag Nest, Hallownest's Crown, Failed Tramway (and trams themselves), and the leftmost part of Howling Cliffs that you can't walk past. While not having a whole lot of relevance to progression I love how they feel like echoes of a story far beyond what you play through.
Same goes for the Teacher's Archives and Fog Canyon, which I visually love but I agree do suffer from their uniqueness. They feel so.. "un-Hollow Knight" somehow. Having electricity/technology as a sort of otherworldly force is cool but for the better that it's in its own walking path containment zone.

White Palace is my favorite, I am not the best at video games and my first playthrough of Hollow Knight took almost 100 hours. I refused to watch any videos or spoilers for White Palace, knowing it was the last New area I would see in an aging game everyone had already mastered, while I spent 6 hours getting my ass beat by the Mantis Lord's. It took me almost 2 hours to get through White Palace for the kings soul, and my husband watched me scream while I died a million times. The aesthetics, difficulty, gorgeous sound track, and just fun of playing it with whom I love, made White Palace an unforgettable lovely expierence for me.

i was in awe the first time i got to greenpath. after a while of stumbling around in crossroads with not much purpose, you make your way into this stunningly beautiful area. its so much colorful than anything youve ever seen before, the music is some of the best in the game, and the slow aimlessness of crossroads gets replaced by a lingering and exciting mystery as you see hornet observing you before running away just out of reach. had i made this list it would probably be at least top 5

As an arachnophobe, Deepnest was easily the scariest area for me.
But The Abyss, on first play through, was actually more terrifying to get through for me.
The combination of the music and the general atmosphere made me… incredibly scared to go further down into this enormous well. Every time a new enemy appeared, I jumped, because I was that tense.

Exploring that area and having to fight the best boss fight at the end with the Mantis Lords made me fall in love with the game, so it holds a special place in my heart. City of Tears might be first because of the aesthetics alone tho (music and visuals), it's a difficult choice for me.

@@LemonDuck88 sure man! I’d like to share my opinion.
I enjoyed literally every area in the game but some just were way more fun for me then others.
15: The Hive; The hive was an area I didn’t expect I would come across on my journey. I accidently found the entrance to this place cause I saw the wall moving when I swang my nail. The Hive is a unique place; really different in comparison to the other areas. The downside, there was really no point in going through this area. The reward of going through this whole area was one lackluster charm. (And one boss but that was part of the challenge for the charm)
The aesthetics were cool but after a while I was done with it and the music was pretty meh.
14: Howling Cliffs; it’s an alright area but there isn’t much to do here. It serves both as the edge as the world and as the starting area. it has one charm, a nailmaster, an essence tree, Gorb and you can trigger the grimm troupe quest here but that’s it. It looks a little basic (which is fine) and the music didn’t really stick to me
13: Resting Grounds; Being one of the smallest areas in the game, again there isn’t much to do here. When I first went to this place I was confused as to why I was send to the dream realm. Afterwards it was a bit fun but in the end this place feels like it just consists out of a lot of small subareas which are really different from eachother and why it doesn’t feel as 1 area as much as others. It has the blue lake (which looks amazing btw), spirits glade, the area under the tower where seer lives with the creepy enemies. Again the music didn’t stick to me that much and I didn’t really enjoy the flower quest that much. For me it’s just the place that seer lives and that’s about it.
12: Fog Canyon; again a smaller area. Only until much much later I knew how to kill the bigger explosive jellyfish so first I was just avoiding them cause I didn’t know how to kill them. I was also confused how to get through the black beams at first. Everything looks the same to me in Fog Canyon. The only things that stood out to me where the Teachers Archives, the (ancestral or overgrown) Mound, Queens Station and Millibelle the banker. The boss was also not that fun. At first it was cool seeing for the first time not fighting a boss alone but the whole fight was the same and just was repetitive after a while
11: Dirtmouth; What can I say about this place? Solid hub, some nice emotional yet also for some reason nostalgic music. It feels like a cozy little town to me and I like talking to Elderbug once in a while. It’s only really small and looks a bit bland and basic (which is logical for first areas in the game), but therefore it doesn’t deserve much higher. Also I hate the Zote boss fight and reading through all 52 of Zote’s precepts XD
10: Forgotten Crossroads/ Infected Crossroads; these where so forgotten to me that I first forgot to put them on my list. It serves as a roundabout to several places including Dirtmouth, Greenpath, Fog Canyon, Fungal Wastes, City of Tears, Resting Grounds and Crystal Peak. 7 areas! It was a fun first real starting area getting to know the game better. Getting to know about the map, charms, spells, grubs and the platform mechanics (bouncing on spikes). It also had the first boss, which was quite fun.
9: Kingdom’s Edge; a pretty big area known for the Colloseum of Fools, the second Hornet Fight, home of one of the Nailmasters and the ash falling like snow. Solid area, which some great bosses. (Hornet and colloseum of fools final battle). It’s also home to the most annoying enemies in the game, Primal Aspids and also the Giant Hoppers. In the end it’s a solid area.
8: Royal Waterways; the place that serves as the sewer system for the capital city of Hallownest. Most gross area in the game yet also interesting to explore. All the enemies were interesting (and gross) to fight. Flukemarm was a surprise since it was in a hidden room. Dung defender was an awesome boss with some awesome attacks and music. I like how you could hear the dung defender’s calls far before you were in the boss room. Isma’s Grove is also part of this area. You finally get the ability to swim here. The Junk Pit lies far to the west of this area. It mainly serves as an entrance to Godhome
7: Ancient Basin; cool place. Serves as the place where the White Palace lies and where countless souls rest. It’s the second stop at the tram. This place has by far the most lore to it. The abyss is also an awesome place and the climbing sorta custscene in the abyss is one of the most memorable moments in the game.
6: Deepnest. Incredible place. It’s a bummer to see that a lot of people put it really low on their list simply because it does exactly what it’s supposed to. The music and sounds in this place are terrifying which suits with the enemies being terrifying which suits with the whole aesthetic, which is also terrifying. The build up to Nosk was is also really creepy and also memorable. The Nosk boss fight was okay, not that fun yet also not bad. I also found it confusing why there was never a big boss fight at the end of this horrifying place before the dreamer. The other dreamers did have a boss fight before them so I was expecting another one and that was a bit disappointing.
5: Crystal Peak; looks really cool overal and I love the whole crystal/mine aesthetic. The enemies all suit the place really well and it has a lot of unique platforming hazards. Little disappointing this place didn’t have a real boss.
4: Greenpath, second area underground. The whole area looks beautiful and I love the music. The enemies all suit the area great. The boss Hornet is awesome. When you enter this place for the first time it looks really different in comparison to the basic look of the previous areas (Howling Cliffs, Dirtmouth and Forgotten Crossroads). You unlock Dash here and you can also find the Overgrown Mound and the Lake of Unn here.
3: Queens Gardens; home to the Mantis species who betrayed their tribe of Mantis Village. This area is filled with thorns, temporarily platforms, foliage and mantis enemies. This place feels like one big overgrown greenhouse. The Traitor lord is a great boss and the music is also good. This region also has the second or first most beautiful bench location. Far to west looking out through a window to the flying dragonflies with the music speaker. It’s also the place where the sad fate of Cloth took place. Lastly the White Lady lives here which serves more lore to the story.
2: City of Tears, the big capital of Hallownest. It has the Kings station, the Nail Smith, one of the dreamers, the soul sanctum, the memorial to the hollow knight and big skyscrapers. The music is beautiful and emotional. All bosses (Watcher Knights, The Collector and Soul Master) are really awesome. Really what does this place not have? Sitting on the bench next to Quirel with the rain coming down on the window is also one of the most memorable moments in the game. The big dudes guarding the Kings Station, the teleporting enemies in the soul sanctum and the small elevators sure are a pain.
1: Fungal Wastes; one of the early- to -mid game areas in the game. You either arrive at this place after descending through fog canyon and after stumbling on Queens Station or if you descending at the southwest of the forgotten crossroads. I always had fun going through this area. It had great music, the best boss fight in the game imo (Mantis Lords) and an awesome entrance gateway to the capital city. Besides the City of Tears it also connects to Deepnest, Fog Canyon, Queens Gardens, Forgotten Crossroads And the Royal Waterways. Mantis Village was cool and getting the mantis claw was really handy. following Hornet leading you to the City of Tears was fun. The bouncy mushrooms are also great for platforming. I like the colorful surroundings in this area and als like the look ot the acid water. Leg Eater, Mr Mushroom also live here. You also find Bretta here. Moss Prophet also lives here, which is just an NPC indicating how the infection takes over. The first time you see him he prays to the radience believing in it and when you come back later you can see the moss prophet is dead and overrun by infection. I can’t think of single big flaw in this area. I hate mushrooms irl and I’ve never thought I would like a fungi based area in a game this much. Best area in the game imo.
Hope this gives you a better understanding of my ranking!

I agree with most of your rankings. For my rankings i would honestly put kingdom's edge and resting grounds much higher and the hive and waterways more lower. The resting grounds would be in my top 4 if not the fact for that below the grave section. It ruins the asthectic of this calm and creepy yet soothing resting place with very annoying and dark cavern with hust enemies that do not fit in. Also kingdom's edge is quite underrated mostly because of primal aspid but the warrior's from the Colosseum falling down, the Ash that's everywhere and because Bardoon i really like the kingdom's edge. I do not like the hive because it doesn't have much to do. There's only 4 things there and no reason to go back and the waterways are well the waterways. Though I really liked the video!

I made a ranking a little over a year ago, and honestly, it still holds up pretty well.
    15. The Hive. I really don't understand why everyone seems to love it. A bee hive is the most generic thing you could have in a bug game. It's also a very linear area with almost nothing in it. Absolutely forgettable.
    14. Dirtmouth. I love the town itself, I return to it almost always when I end one of my session, because it's just such a peaceful place. Sadly, the king's pass kinda brings it down, because it's a boring tutorial(at least it doesn't last long).
    13. Royal Waterways. It's a very pretty sewers level, but that doesn't say much lol. Besides being ugly, it's also small and has the most awful boss in the game.
12.Howling cliffs. I can't really put it any higher without being intellectually dishonest, but I really like it. It's such a cool surprise, to just explore Greenpath and suddendly you're in an open and mysterious area that gives an idea of just how barren the surface is.
11.Fungal Waste. I'm not a big fan of anything ''superficial'' in this area, from enemy design to music, with the exception of the mantis village. It just doesn't fit my taste, I can't tell you why. This area also has the worst piece of level design in the game:the godamn purple mushroom. Why is there not the slightest hint on what you're suppose to do???
10.Fog Canyon. It's a lesser version of Greenpath that doesn't really feel worthy of having one of the dreamers. The teacher's archive themselves also aren't that great.
9.Resting Grounds. The spirit's glade alone makes it deserve this relatively high spot on the list. Hearing the dozens of unique dialogues from characters with incredibly varied character design, all while listening to the beautiful music is an experience like no other.
8.Greenpath. This is when it starts getting difficult to rank them. All areas starting from here are fantastic. That said, Greenpath is a little too hand-holding and has a lot of empty space, so that's why it's here.
7.Deepnest. I'm a little surprised it made it that high into my list. Tbh, the horror aspect did not impress me as much as most people-phazon mines and Dark Aether from the prime games both beat this area for that. I do appreciate how claustrophobic it feels with those tight corridors, and how much you feel like you can't rely on anything, between the floor breaking and the corpse creepers.
6.Forgotten crossroads. I'll never forget how I felt when I first explored this area, I get a rush of nostalgia every time I go here. It's a beautiful introduction, and destroying that safe zone with the infection later on is a great idea.
5.Crystal Peak. I despise almost every enemy here, but it looks really pretty, has a cool upgrade, the crown of Hallownest is great, and I love how it can get you to a super early dreamnail. I got it right after the mothwing cloak on my first playthrought.
4.Kingdom's edge. A very underrated area. It's threathening, has some fantastic boss fights, memorable set pieces like the colosseum or the mr mushroom tablet area, it's beautiful to look at and it's got nice music.
3.Ancient Basin. If the Abyss wasn't so short and if the Ancient Basin itself had more substance, it might have gotten first place, honestly. The Abyss is incredibly memorable and the white palace is a fantastic platforming challenge that's unlike anything else in the game.
2.City of Tears. It has three of the most memorable boss fights in the game, it's massive, has great sub-areas like the soul sanctum or the tower of love and obviously it has the best music in the music. The reason why it isn't number 1 is because of the meh placement of the relic guy and the nailsmith in relation to the stag stations, which makes you waste a little more time than necessary, and also how easy it is.
1.Queen's gardens. It is probably my favorite metroidvania area ever. It's the perfect size and has the perfect ammount of things to find, it has challenging and fun enemies, a pretty good boss(at least after the lifeblood update), some nice lore, it looks absolutely stunning and the music is very good too. I really can't think of anything wrong about this area.
I think I would now put royal waterways and howling cliffs above fungal wastes and fog canyon, and I probably would inverse fungal wastes and fog canyon. I realized over time that royal waterways have too much content to place it that low, and I've decided that I don't mind being intellectually dishonest for howling cliffs lol. I would switch fungal wastes and fog canyon cause it's become more and more obvious to me that fog canyon is clearly unfinished. Besides that, I might give the first place to city of tears after all: since making this ranking, I've played almost exclusively randomizers, where the poor placement of the stag stations doesn't matter.
Your ranking video was quite enjoyable to watch thanks to all your hot takes! After seeing greenpath in last place, I knew I was in for a roller coaster lol. I gotta say, after you said that platforming was your favorite part of the game, I really expected you to place to white palace in first place, but then you revealed your love for the horror side of Hollow Knight when you talked about deepnest, and then I knew ancient basin would have that honor.

Apart from Godhome (becuase it's Godhome) Grimms tent has the most bosses in the least amount of space, having only 2 rooms (excluding Divine's tent) and two bosses. And I exclude Godhome because the whole place is meant to be packed with bosses so it wouldnt be a fair comparision.

      •Infected Crossroads
Forgotten Crossroads, but better and more explosive enemies!
      •City of Tears
Absolutely beautiful place with 2 enjoyable bosses (Watcher Knights are fun after the first time) and the way it expands lateri on in the game to the Richer side is both cool design and worldbuilding
      •Ancient Basin

      •Godhome
I enjoy Godhome a whole lot and just recently defeated Pure Vessel so I am excited for more
      •Kingdom's Edge

      •Abyss Shore

Legitimately I nearly have Ancient Basin and Greenpath swapped. Granted I rank Ancient Basin and the Abyss as separate zones which hurts their rankings, but still I just find Ancient Basin rather bland and unappealing. The only boss fight isn’t a particularly memorable one for me and the monarch wings are one of the least needed upgrades in the game given all the skips that exist. Greenpath on the other hand is the area that made me start falling in love with the game. It feels so much more wild and vibrant than the dullness of the first couple areas, the Hornet fight has great build up, is much more challenging than the False Knight and has a lot of story intrigue woven in. There’s so many things to find around every corner, unlike the Ancient Basin which is about as linear and straightforward as can possibly be, you just go in one way, get the pale ore and return. Same with monarch wings, in and out with no branching paths, there’s just nothing much in the area to explore, nothing hidden to find. For me that makes Greenpath a much more enjoyable zone than the Ancient Basin, not to mention the music being a huge point in Greenpath’s favor.

    17. Resting grounds. Good on theme and lore, lacking in gameplay.
    16. Dirtmouth. Flat, small, and not much to do. What there is to do is good and the shops give plenty of reason to come back.
    15. Royal waterways. It's annoying and gross. There are 3 good parts, the dung/white defender, the room with the large charging bugs, and the entrance to godhome.
    14. The hive. Absolutely beautiful but Absolutely short. Go in, fight the boss for a charm and find the hidden mask. That's basically it. The enemies are cool though.
    13. Howling cliffs. I like how instead of a linear path or paths branching off of the center you enter caves from the outside. It's really cool but there isnt much to do.
    12. Queens garden. A very standard area. It nails the platforming and the atmosphere and enemies are (mostly) good. There are simply more interesting areas in the game.
    11. White palace. Great gauntlet but it doesn't have much past that aside from finding secret rooms and path of pain.
    10. Fog canyon. If this area wasn't so small it would rank MUCH higher. It's aesthetically great. The few rooms are almost all great and it even has the teachers archives.
    9. Greenpath. Slightly tedious in some parts but it still has the first hornet fight, the hunter, good enemies, and looks great with greater music to back it up.
    8. Ancient basin. Broken vessel is a fantastic boss with a great build-up. It mainly beats greenpath for the abyss which is one of the games highlights.
    7. Fungal wastes. It's easily one of the most memorable areas in the game and it's very challenging on a new playthrough. The core and mantis village are also very unique from the rest of the game. Its mostly just the impact of the area that I love though.
    6. Forgotten crossroads. Existing as a tutorial it does a fantastic job at adding a little bit of every part of the game and putting into one space. It's very important in the game considering it connects to nearly half of the other areas in the game. And what other area literally changes the entire theme eventually? Lastly is introduces some memorable characters like quirrel, myla, and sly.
    5. Kingdoms edge. I will never forget the feeling of wandering through what feels like a towering snowy mountain running away from some of the toughest enemies in the game. The second hornet battle is also one of the best fights in the game.
    4. Crystal peak. This feels like a massive final challenge for the last areas in the earlier half of the game. I like how it's an area that is teased in the beginning of the game and you can't access it until going around the entire pilgrim way. The area is beautiful, challenging, and has many unique concepts being allowed by the more technological theme. Being able to explore all but one path the first time coming through just makes the second time feel all the more rewarding.
    3. Deepnest. Absolutely terrifying in the best way possible. The atmosphere is so memorable, the gameplay is solid, and the lore is very important. I'm also quite fond of its size despite being so narrow.
    2. City of tears. I dont even need to explain but I will. Straight up gorgeous! The music, the theme, the rain, the introduction, it's all perfect! It is easily the superior area for any metroidvania. In terms of gameplay the level my be somewhat flat at time but each building has its own unique challenge and there is plenty of other things too. But if it's so incredible than why is it number 2?
    1. Godhome. I freaking love bosses that's why! Bosses are the single best part of video games to me. Every time I play a new game im thinking about what bosses could be waiting to fight me. And for someone who loves bosses so much hollow knight is basically boss city. Hollow knight has SO. MANY. BOSSES. None of which are bad and most of which are fantastic and an area to fight all of these amazing bosses whenever I want is a dream come true to me. Even past the option to fight any boss whenever I want the pantheons are set up in a very good way and Godseeker is one of, if not my favorite character in the entire game. Godhome may not be platforming perfection. It may not have an absolutely amazing atmosphere but it gets the single thing I care about most and does it 10x perfectly.
