Today I'm talking a bit about the WNHCrownDownHatKAL and doing some window shopping for top-down hats on Ravelry. Join me! (Window shopping begins at 05:27 )
FYI for those who don’t know: Ravelry has a built-in currency converter. In the top right corner of the pattern page is a box with the price shown in the original currency and the price in your chosen currency (and you can choose whether to buy it now, add to cart or send as a gift)
I know this is the point, but wow that was super useful. I've been using Ravelry for years and didn't know about these features. I just type in what I think I'm looking for and scroll through all the pages.
As someone who crochets and knits, I’ve always found it interesting that crochet hats commonly start at the crown while knit hats commonly start at the brim. Of course the Musselburgh Hat is an extremely popular exception!
I love your hat! I was introduced to top-down hat by Isolda Teague and her very popular Musselburg Hat. It's a classic! On my queue I have the Alatau Hat by Ainur Berkimbayeva.
i started a top-down hat this week so i guess i'm joining the kal by coincidence! too funny. i use the "manly version" of suzyn j gonzalez's top down, no math hat - will have to check out some of the patterns you mentioned as well.
The Alaska and Aska hats remind me of Tori Yu's Manhattan Hat (which is worked from the brim to the crown). It has a very similar crown shape and overall feel. Love having the option to go either direction and still get that great looking end product.
That was so funny with your head matching with the book. Of all the hats, I like your hat the best! Great podcast. You help me so much with Ravelry too.
What I've found I like to do is to start out at the top, work the hat to the normal length, then continue with the stitches already on the needle, and work in reverse - as if I'm doing another hat from the bottom up. Then fold one into the other for a double thick hat. It also has the advantage of concealing loose ends/floats. Also, if you want, you can reverse the color schemes, or change the colors altogether for a reversible hat. Think of the possibilities...
This is perfect timing! I was just looking for a reason to start a beanie as a maybe-holiday gift if i can finish it in time. I think I'll go with Reykholt by Dianna Walla on ravelry, as I love the idea of a reversible beanie ❤
I wish you could have seen how *rapidly* I jumped into this video and breathed a sigh of relief, this is exactly what I was looking for! I was previously in the process of searching for a way to make a hat for son, buuuuuuuut this tubular cast on, plus the ack of proper circular needles, *plus* the metal DPNs that I have were kicking my butt attempting to do this from the brim, up. I was floored hearing about this concept since I’m still fairly new to knitting. I would love to join the KAL, as well, it’ll be my first one. I had a couple of hiccups, so this is for future knitters, as well as a note to myself if I run into this issue…..freaking pay attention to the pattern. That is all lol I tell my kids this all the time, but I also tell them I make mistakes too. So after another attempt at a new concept, getting used to the tools I have, ore attentiveness, and a swapping of the yarn I was using (traded my DK for worsted, it made it so much easier) I am finally ready to tackle this project! I am so happy to complete it!
Oh I’m so glad! And I have to tell you, if you like the look of a tubular cast on (who doesn’t? It’s just the process that sucks! 😂) you can achieve the same look when you knit from the crown down by doing an Italian or tubular bind off and in my opinion it’s WAY more pleasant and far less complicated. ❤️
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS I was wondering about that! I was inspired to do an Italian bind off, but had no clue there was a tubular bind off! Sweet! I will look up how to do that, thanks for the advice!
Funny, I was thinking about knitting a hat for my baby and couldn't find a pattern that fit the picture in my head. But this video inspired me to just try it AND try it top down, because of the advantages you named :)
This is perfect timing! I need some hat projects for Christmas gifts. I am currently on Ravelry pinching your hat list lol! Thank you for putting in the work for me. I love your choices.
Taylor, since you're a fan or the wedge like cone top down, try this one, it's a great knit and a great hat Passe Partout hat by Knits by Summer. Its on ravelery. I made mine with dk yarn but it calls for fingering plus mohair. 28:16
Just wanted to add that the hat with the special construction that you showed, the Aska hat, calls for a Judy's magic cast-on, which is my go-to for toe-up socks. So I think for this hat you would cast on a few stitches, (by looking at the crown I would say maybe 20 or 24) and then increases at each end, probably every round to create a round shape. You would have to leave enough stitches between your increases to create the top band (as oppose to a sock, where you leave only 2 stitches on each sides). I don't know if that is clear or correct, but I would definitely try that.
I am surprised Thorpe hat didn’t pop up right away. It was super popular like 15 yrs ago and has over 7000 projects. Great super warm fast ear flap hat.
Another great option for anyone looking for a basic stockinette watchcap-style beanie for men is Jameson by Meghan Babin. Simple increases, sport-weight yarn. Excellent for mindless TV knitting!
Ravelry is different on mobile, i don't own a computer, so i wrote down all the hats to look up later. I own 20+ hats now im going to own more! Utah justifies all head coverings
Hey, Tayler! After I watched this video, another past one of yours came up. There was a book you mentioned about stitch patterns in the round and flat. Could you remind me of the title? I forgot to write it down. (Old and old school here!!!)
I know it's a KNIT-along, but are crochet crown down hats ok? I've been meaning to make the super simple Super Chunky Pom Pom Beanie by KingAndEye. I'm usually a knitter, but I crochet on occasion, and this is a crochet pattern. If not, I'm sure I can find something else, just let me know when you have a moment to do so please. Thank you for all the lovely content.
I’ve been working on a hat I reverse engineered so I could work it top down. Are WIPS allowed for the KAL? I started it last month. Also, the Boyfriend Beanie was my first ever hat. It’s great for beginners!
I can’t even buy patterns on ravelry. I have to go through my LYS to buy one where they print a copy and still send me a link to download myself. For some reason, PayPal won’t work for me. No clue if it’s got something with my bank, but I wish it accepted normal credit cards. If I can, I sometimes go to the designer’s website to buy the pattern.
Riddle me this……why do the Ravelry links you provide go to the Ravelry log in page but some others I’ve seen take you to the actual page but say something at the top like “you are viewing as a guest to see more sign up or log in”?
Right now I'm making the Musselburgh Hat, in my opinion the most boring hat, but also literally everyone fiber TH-camr has made it, so you just can't call yourself experienced knitter if not have that one accomplished! 😄
So I’ve never knit a Musselburgh hat before and it’s precisely because it looks super boring. 😬😬🤷♀️🤷♀️ So my hat is off to you my friend. Persist because it is one heck of a cute hat. 😘
Top down hat. Why? I have a tape measure and I know how to use it, so no 'improvisation' is required. So weird the no-one understands how to measure any more.

I was wondering why Taylor wasn't aware of that 🤔🤔😂
What?! Thank you for changing my life! I was one of those who didn't know 😊
I know this is the point, but wow that was super useful. I've been using Ravelry for years and didn't know about these features. I just type in what I think I'm looking for and scroll through all the pages.

You crack me up 😂, the book with your head. Beautiful hat, great idea for top down, just like sweaters. It’s a crownacopia 🎉
My favourite of all time ist the Musselburgh Hat! I love this pattern and you make the stitchcout on the way. That is so convenient.
It's my favorite too! I'm on hat 3 of 4 for this holiday season. I'm making them for my kids' teachers, plus one for myself!
Mine too! I’ve knit 5 of them with mostly malabrigo yarn ! ❤️👏🧶
Watching this spawned a new hat idea in my head. I have no idea if it will work, but thats the fun!
Ooo yes! So much fun!
Oh my! I’ve never done a top-down hat before! I’m smitten 🥰
Long hair looks wonderful on you!
So many great top down hats! I’ve had the Field Beret & Field Sweater patterns in my library for a while…gotta find the time to make that beret!
I love your hat! I was introduced to top-down hat by Isolda Teague and her very popular Musselburg Hat. It's a classic! On my queue I have the Alatau Hat by Ainur Berkimbayeva.

I've made top down Ear Flap Hat from purl soho- easy and cute thing, but what's impornant- greate choice for hat under bicycle's helmet!

I will have to give top down a try! I love the magnolia hat💖. Thanks for the great inspiration!
You are so welcome! ❤️
Turkish cast on is my favorite for toe-up socks. No long tails, no guesswork. So easy. Gotta try that Alaska Hat!
Thanks for the bundle. I'll be taking a look. Great video.
This past weekend, I knit the Magnolia Hat by Camilla Vad which is knit from the crown down. It worked up SO quickly and is beautiful.
Oh my gosh, I want to make one! I just love that hat.
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS DO IT!!! Lol. You absolutely won't regret it.
I love the Idea of customizing the hat from the crown down. I think it’s easier to fit this way. Thanks
That's exactly why I love it as well! So much fun to just get going. ❤️

I am literally working on a improv crown down hat right now. I was looking for something to watch as I finish it up. What a fun coincidence!
Love that! ❤️
Thank you for your lovely video! Can’t wait to join for the KAL! Lots of love from Italy ❤
Another great video! I've made quite a few berets, and none of them were top down, actually. Your hat is GREAT!
This is perfect timing! I was just looking for a reason to start a beanie as a maybe-holiday gift if i can finish it in time. I think I'll go with Reykholt by Dianna Walla on ravelry, as I love the idea of a reversible beanie ❤
I think you'll be surprised at how fast they seem to knit up when you work them from the top down. ❤️
I’m also planning to knit Reykholt myself, I love the spiral top and I’m excited to get it on my needles…
None of the several berets I've knit were top down. Now I'll have to try one.
I'm technologically challenged so I'm learning so much on how to use Ravelry. TY!
I'm so glad! ❤️
Such a fantastic bundle!! Thanks for sharing!! And hats can never be boring you have such classy taste!
Game of Crowns...winter is coming, will you be prepared? 😂

That’s a great idea!

Ooo love it! Thank you Carolyn!
Tayler, I think you’re hilarious.😂
Thank you Diane. ☺️☺️
Oooohhhhh lots of fun inspiration! Thank you Tayler! 🌻
I’m knitting up the Alaska hat right now and i really like the pattern! The crown is my favorite part!!
P.S. it is four increases!

These hats are great thank u
The hat is beautiful.
Preferred bind off for top down hat? I’m super tight casting off. Tips plz!
There is this pattern by a French designer with a square crown if you want to try : buruko by le point et la ligne
Almost everything you show is my “cozy up of tea!” That hat is really pretty….good job! Gotta like a great raglan sweatshirt….where from?
Thank you! And this sweatshirt is from Nordstrom Rack. It’s their Abound brand. ☺️

that calvaria hat would be handy if someone wants to cosplay Professor Crinkle from harry potter XD
