Hi Tayler, I would love some advice on how you track your yarn inventory. Do you use Ravelry? How do you store your yarns, by fiber? Color? Size of yarn? Is your yarn in boxes with a list of what is in each box or strand of yarn to identify what's in the box? How do you protect your yarn against moths? I also have the same questions about how you organize your patterns. Thank you for your help with this. PS If it's not too intrusive, can we see Pepper? Do you ever knit for Pepper? XO Gail
Hi Tayler! I am in New Zealand and I am becoming addicted to your podcasts! This one was particularly interesting as I have been making my own project bags recently, as the budget will not stretch to purchases .... I agree with other comments re thrift shops, etc, but the bucket bag you showed, made me really think I could make one very similar from a (clean!) plastic plant pot, covered with fabric and maybe lined as well, incorporating the drawstring top, and so on. One could use recycled clothing for the fabric and use a plant pot sized to suit. Comments welcome!
My go to travel bags are by a company called ZipLock! 🤣 Thanks for some ideas to dream on!
When I do two at a time socks, I usually put one ball in a ziploc within my project bag - then no tangling!
That is my go to as well! My mom has a collection of canvas tote bags that I grab.
Lol i use them if im taking my knitting to an environment that has weird smells
Taylor I really appreciate how keep in mind that people have varying budgets and situations and share with us many different options! One thing I'd like to share is that I have found very nice bags and baskets at my local thrift shop for very little money 🙂
I'm a "recycler", "re-user" and FRUGAL! I find great project bags at thrift shops. Yes, cosmetic bags, "hobo" bags and even VERA BRADLEY vintage purses with pockets!!
I use two Vera Bradley bags as project bags. One I inherited from a relative that passed away. The other I found at a thrift shop.

True about tools and accessories upping the enjoyment of your hobby. Decades ago when yarn bowls were elusive and I was on the hunt, people would say, “I use a teapot.” Or “I use an ice cream bucket.” I don’t want a teapot or a bucket. I don’t want a grocery bag. Accessories matter to me. 😊

Oh my stars 🥰🥰🥰🥰. Thank you for sharing my Round Everyday Knitting tote ☺️. I’m Stoney Lake Textiles and my Round Everyday Project Tote is one of the fave bags I make, and yes, it’s the same fabric Menagerie as your sock sized project bag. It’s ian expensive bag but it’s 100% slow-made by me and made to last for years & years. A friend tagged me to see your post as I was taking g a break from my studio out in the desert this week so missed your post. Thank you again 🧶
This video is very helpful for me as a leathercrafter and sewist who also knits and crochets (yes, I have way too many hobbies). I’ve personally always wanted a project bag that can double as a purse, looks high end and closed by magnets because yarn can get stuck in zipper. Maybe I’ll design one and send you one to review!

These are all lovely and i want them all but honestly, my whole collection of wips live in free or nearly free reusable tote/shopping bags. Those are the ones i choose time and time again. They have handles for carrying or slinging over stroller handles, the sit open on the floor and have plenty of room to stuff everything i need. And i dont worry about setting them down on the ground or floor mat in the car. No zippers to snag my yarn on. The other things i use are draw string sacks from bed sheets and for long term storage i use clear vinyl zipper around thingys from bedding sets. Im not super crazy about upcycling or anything but those are the things i have and use most frequently. Lol who am i kidding i will put yarn in any sort of bag tote or container, repurposed, hand made, whatever
Crocher here. My hubs works at a mattress company. When they make a delivery with a mattress protector, he grabs me the plastic zippered packaging. Works like a dream for small projects.
I’m cackling 😂 i just realized I’m the basket lady! I have so many baskets for all the things - toy baskets, blanket basket, postpartum/baby basket, nesting projects basket etc 😅
I find Vera Bradley bags work very well for storing knitting projects. They come in a variety of sizes and often have lots of pockets for notions. Discontinued styles are often available with quite discounted prices. Gift stores like Hallmark stores often have good deals on them. There may be coordinated small pouches too. I have also seen diaper bags that would work well too with lots of little extra pockets.
Quart size Zip lock bags. I find them to be perfect size for socks. I can see which project I’m picking up. Disposable if they get dirty, holes, etc. I prefer to spend my money on actual knitting items, like yarn and needles.
I also use gallon size zipper bags too for larger projects or if you need space to include instructions - love that I can see into them.

Although a bit pricey, Pendleton has some lovely bags that somewhat mimic the style of your World Market dopp kit, as well as smaller pouches and larger totes. All really high quality.
For anyone looking for a good sweater bag that grows with the project, I LOVE my hide and hammer roll top bag. It is the perfect bag for me. I also love Joji and co bags because they’re beautiful and leather and durable, but man, the hide and hammer bag is a work horse. They are also a good stand/walk and knit bag.

As a self described bag lady, this was difficult to stay away from! I have purchased 2 bags just for knitting from local crafters - one for socks and a medium 1. I have generally stored projects over the years in just about everything - boxes, laundry baskets, plastic totes, wicker baskets, and large totes/handbags that I no longer use. I have 2 very large wooden salad bowls that I leave for my little projects, notion bags, patterns, and swatches. My latest project is housed in an old tote with a zipper - worst decision ever so it will be headed to a donation bin when project is done.

i LOVED this episode!! Thank you for exploring basketry. In addition to knitting, crochet and weaving, i', a sometime basket maker and appreciate anytime a maker recognizes good basket design. Did you know that EVERY basket is made by hand- there is no machine that can do it.
Thanks for sharing a variety of bags for a variety of budgets!! Garage sales (tag sales) and second hand stores are great places to find project bags and baskets on a budget. Also think outside what they were meant for. I found a sling bag meant to transport a game system. There were pockets everywhere. Made an amazing project bag!
This has given me some good ideas for bags, even if you do say 'paddern' and 'nidding'!!!!
The bags look fun!! I thought the one for over the arm was cool. Totally agree they are nice to have, and not necessary. The hat was very cute and looks great on you!

I'm a big fan of my two Tom Bihn bags. They have one that's specifically for knitting which is medium sized and their makers bag which is larger. I will say they are a bit on the pricey side and I was lucky to get mine as gifts.
The arm knitting bags are also good for bath knitting. Wrap the strap over your tub bar and it will hold your yarn.
I have a fringe bag. Didn’t realize they are no longer available. Lucky, I am, to have acquired while I could.
I make bags similar to these to sell from my quilter cotton fabrics. So good for so many things.
Besides knitting and crochet I also sew and quilt and have loved making my own project bags out of funky fabrics with matching zippers or drawstrings and tailoring the pockets.

For a small bag I mostly use a Japanese knot bag that I wear on my wrist.
For a medium bag I use a nylon back pack or draw string bag. Most of mine were promotional items or purchased at thrift stores. Mostly because I am cheap and want to spend my money on yarn and needles.
When traveling by plane, I use a fly fishing vest (the older canvas style). It can hold a week or more worth of knitting plus what ever I would put in a purse. Because I wear it, I can’t accidentally leave it behind, no matter how tired I am, and I have hands free for whatever I want. Then when I get to my destination I can use a cheap nylon bag if I don’t want to wear a vest where ever I go.
I would use a large belly basket for afghans.
A shop that sells African market baskets just opened by me. I had to buy one and come back to rewatch this.
I have bought a few from thrift stores so I figured I'd be nice to support a local company that prioritizes fair pay.
I travel internationally with my children (of which I have quite a few) and my husband (of which I only have one) more often than I like. (I HATE flying). That travel bag is amazing. I have a problem finding a bag that is both backpack and large enough. So I end up taking the snack/toy/activity bag and then another bag for my knitting/reading/other things on the trip. That backpack might just be the answer. Great find!
I freaking love my baskets - high recommend having some african market baskets if you stay home a lot!
Awesome video! I love beautiful project bags …and have many…but as a hopeless thrifter I love finding beautiful, vintage, and unique bags and totes from thrift stores/antique shops to reuse as project bags. I have to admit one of my most favorite project bags was a lovely hand stamped paper bag I got a local yarn shop when I bought yarn there.

Thanks! I just ordered a bag from Sweet Acorn Creations as a Valentines gift from my husband. He asked what I wanted and I usually have no clue so he just buys me another skein of sock yarn.
Omg had to go right to Barnes and noble and get that camping bag😁currently holding a baby Musselburgh for our new grandbaby due in April making it for her to have a special cap in the hospital it fits magically in my purse!!

I use my market basket for throwing all my "smaller" bags in. So it may have 2-4 projects in it at once. I just carry it around the house as I move to different spots. Love it

That denim bag would be great for hockey practice T! That way you can add a few snacks, even a small thermos as well as knitting. Bonus that you can still bang on the glass as needed too! Win win
My favorite project bags I:
-made myself from some legs I cropped off some pants
-Ikea bags in a variety of sizes
-some drawstring travel bags I got for $5 for a set of three
I especially tend to put my project in a bag that will then be going into my purse or tote bag, so I don't seek structure so much as it being a way to corral my project and move it around the room.
I was a Thirty-One consultant for a few years, so I have a life time supply of project bags in all shapes and sizes! I’ve seen them on swap FB groups, Etsy and at thrift shops.
Love the zipper pouch and the totes for storage or large projects.
I went to a coffee shop's opening and they gave me a free tote bag, and it's been amazing to take my knitting project in. I've knit half a blanket and it hasn't out grown it yet. I'll never overlook the usefulness of a basic tote bag.

Hi the Dropp Kit bag can be sewn if you are a sewist. Incomplete Stitches sells a pattern for the splash pouch which looks just like your dropp kit bag. Your bag inspires me to sew my own.😄
This was a fun video to watch - it also made me give a huge thanks (again & many times over) to my Mom for teaching me how to sew long long ago - I’ve actually made two Fringe bags, they definitely perform! Thanks Taylor.
I sew as well. But being a mom to a toddler, I don’t have the time to commit to it anymore (sadly). So, I will stick to supporting other makers and buy a bag (or three…lol). Oh how I wish I had the time to sew again!!
So I went into this trying to find out if people are using some bags that I use to store my crochet projects. Then I found you. I am not buying any bags anytime soon. I will continue to use my cosmetic bags and some of the Shein plastic ziploc bags.
Love these options!!! I get my project bags from Poshmark to get quality for less money- i particularly love the Kavu bucket bags. Also I realize i need to add some tassels to my bags… too cute!

Thanks for introducing me to JesabelleB! I have been wanting to try walk-knitting and I ordered one of those sweet little sophisticated looking denim wristlet project bags to try it out.
Lots of interesting options! My favorite sock bags are the Sock Box bags made by Star Knits. They might be too small for two-at-a-time knitting, but they're great for those of us who still do one at a time. I love the way baskets look, but we also have three cats, so yarn in baskets is just a recipe for disaster. 😂
I have dogs and cats and would need a basket with a drawstring top to close in order to keep things in and furbabies out! That would something worth buying if anyone is listening!

I'll have to wait for flea market season and keep my eyes open for a few more baskets! For now, I definitely needed a fairly big but shallow basket to hold caked up sock yarn and yarn scraps so I can still see what I have - I ended up buying a rattan dog bed as it was inexpensive and was exactly what I need.
This was fun! I think it is so individual what we find works for us. Once I picked up a couple "waxed canvas storage totes" from an LLBean outlet. I think they are for carrying logs, but I use them for sweater projects. They aren't for travel, but I do throw them in the car or to take a to friend's house for knitting time. I love them, the size is perfect for a sweater. It's a little awkward to carry, but I just pick up by the side handle and go. Such a simple pleasure to have a bag you really like.

Lovely selection of bags! I will warn you re the bags meant to drape around your wrist. I had the small, wool and large project bags and gave away all but the smallest. I wanted them so badly and received them as gifts but I couldn’t use them to walk and knit. The entire weight of the yarn and potentially a portion of the project pulls on your wrist. I found that using the bigger one for a short sleeve fingering weight Tee was so heavy on my wrist if I carried more than one cake of yarn that I couldn’t use it to walk or stand and knit. At that time, my fingering weight Tee was utilizing hand dyed yarn so I was alternating the skeins. I was on the subway and finally just stopped knitting until I could sit down. My wrist and shoulder ached the rest of the day. I had 2 cakes, a row counter and the paper pattern in the bag. I chose the bag because I knew the Tee would grow but I was not even done with the yoke. I switched wrists and the weight was a bit better but the yarn was coming across me so it was catching my jacket buttons and snagged once.

I just found your channel entirely by accident today (lucky me!) and discovered on the *first* video you're recommending a company from my 500 person hometown?! Not sure what I did to get this sort of good luck, but I'll take it!
Agree entirely about the pocket requirements between small and medium bags. Small projects are small by volume but also by virtue of not needing tons of Stuff To Make It Happen. Medium projects need pockets to corral all that.
My knitted sweaters are 5x, so I'll be using all those giant bags! I just finished a cardigan that used 5.5 skeins of fishermen's wool. I also get the paradise fibers monthly fiber club boxes and all the fiber comes in these nice drawstring gift pouches, which I always save and use for projects. Sometimes I just need to wrap a cake up in a smaller pouch to store in a larger bag because, hey bamboo yarn, can you not grab on to everything? Much of my yarn is handspun so it helps keep things from getting too friendly with shedding and getting caught on stuff.
Hi, I really enjoy your videos, mostly how you think about people that have varying budgets. I understand the desire to invest in good tools and accessories for something that you love doing but also the struggle of not thinking it "essential". Thank you for sharing and really love all your videos!
I just purchased a bulk pack of large cotton drawstring bags from amazon because it is important to me that the bag itself take up as little space as possible. My hope is to use washable markers to draw on each bag a representation of the project inside and wash it off when the project is done. Until now I've always just used plastic grocery bags because I'm cheap as hell.
You know those plastic zippered packages that bed sheets come in? In my early knitting days I repurposed those for my projects. I liked that they were see-through. And after some recent experiences where a leaky water ball was packed in the same larger bag with my knitting project bag, I wish I had some waterproof bag options!
This video made me realize I have a bunch of dust bags from my purses over the years that I've been hoarding and not knowing what to do with them.

IKEA has something similar to the belly bag that I bought. It’s for plants, but it actually works great for knitting project bags storage also.
Hide and Hammer has some nice (and pricey) project bags. Love what you shared also. SO tempted by Prickly Owl Co! Love the pom-pom!
I love this video so much! It's so nice that you explore knitting from so many angles and touch on every aspect of the hobby.
I have personally found that lunch sacks (especially drawstring or bento styles) work really well as project bags and are way more affordable. For my sock (and other small item) projects I have found some great makeup travel bags and my absolute favorite are waxed canvas foraging pouches that I found on amazon.

Tayler, you are brilliant! The belly basket is exactly what I have been searching for and didn't realize it. I have many many projects going in small project bags as I make stock for an upcoming spring craft fair and have been frustrated with them being all over and I have been thinking of a way to store but keep close by. This is just what I need to toss them in and have every together but not all over.

What fun! I love my project bags and you're so right that they are not necessities but add a lift to the knitting experience. My first African Market Basket came from the outdoor market in Hobart, Tasmania nearly 20 years ago. It is still a beautiful and useful knitting tool that reminds me of a great trip.

My belly basket holds a 2,7kg ball of yarn (all scraps and leftover yarn) that I'm crocheting into a huge c2c blanket 😅 the ball of yarn is so big that I decided to give it a name, Wilson 😂

I like how you showed different sizes and prices for project bags. It nice to see what's out there. Most of my project bags came from my local yarn store. Also, I love your hat! Do you mind sharing what the pattern and yarn is?
I once saw leftover yarn wound in small balls and displayed in a big glass jar…..it looked so pretty!
I have a MangerCo bag and i LOVE it. I love that you encourage people to purchase what works for them and what is in their budget. My dad was a machinist for over 40 years. One lesson he imparted on me was to start with what you can afford then slowly build your tool collection thinking carefully about price and quality. When he died in 2004 his tool collection was appraised at 50,000$usd. He was an avid supporter of having the right tool for the job wether it be actual tools or tools specific to a persons craft.

Every year my friends and I go to a local apple orchard to celebrate fall and I always come home with a new basket for yarn and crafts lol. It's a very nice way to build a collection. I've seen quite a few people talk about thrifting them too, and that's always a great option!

Amazon has every version of these bags for those needing more affordable options. I have a version of most of them and they are great. The big bucket-style bags are super nice even for storage.
I’m a big fan of Tanneicasey bags. Very sturdy construction and great patterns. My favorite is her craft tote.

Project bags - do I have project bags? Yes indeed - and fyi I really enjoyed seeing yours! I have three Arne and Carlos bags. I also bought a kit with industrial style snaps that you put on with a hammer, and I put three snaps at the top of my canvas tote bags so that I can keep my projects in them without worrying about them escaping. I also have an African basket like yours that I keep small percussion instruments like rattles in for when I go to drum circles (by the way, I have discovered that you can’t knit and drum at the same time lol). I like the idea of using it for a project basket, so today I’m going to move my rattles to another large basket and clean off the African basket to use for my projects. Thanks for the idea!
I want to add that if you crochet, there's an awesome free pattern and tutorial on Ravelry called the Scrap Yarn Basket. You hold several strands of scrap yarn together and crochet it tightly with a large hook. You can even get fancy and make a couple of pom poms on a crochet chain and wrap it around one of the handles.

Nice round up! My fave project bags are the ‘gift with purchase’ pouches and totes that I’ve found in thrift stores and on ebay. Prices on eBay have gone up, and I haven’t seen anything lately that I love enough to replace what I already have. But those Cavallini bags at B&N are really tempting!
I hear ya! I have been using all sorts of things to make them from..old pants legs, I even love these fabric drawstring ones from my vertical pillow, they are epic!

I have one large basket I keep my yarn stash in and three purses I use to keep my knitting in as well as regular everyday stuff. Two of those bags are backpack purses - one medium and one large. Both were found on Amazon so they didn't cost much but are built really well. I don't just use them for knitting projects though, which is why I like them because I tend to not knit during the hotter times of the year when my attention is focused more on gardening.
Great round up! I love the camping themed pouch, it's so cute 😍I have and use all of these or a variation. It helps that I can sew because they are all really easy to make. Aditionally I like the Japanese Azuma bukuro / Tsuno bukuro bags for small projects and you can add a shoulder strap if you want to knit standing in line somwhere. Those are also easy to sew, you could even do it by hand.

I only use a project bag for knitting sock when travelling. My go to bags are the free ones (with purchases)that you get from the beauty counters. For me that is most commonly Clarins!

I do have to plug a small local business from my home state of VA; Lineage makes amazing canvas and leather bags for all sorts of things in a bunch of great sizes. Their bags are handmade in VA, and not only beautiful but amazing quality. Thanks for sharing all of these! I'm sure I'll be rewatching this one.
My favourite project bags are the petite knit get your knit together bags! Super thick and durable quilted cotton so it’s free standing and easy to knit straight from the bag. It has loads of pockets for all your necessities and the smaller of the 2 sizes easily fits a full sweater project. I know they’re pricey but they’re 100% worth the money
